I raced and trail rode an 86 CR500 for quite a few years. Torque ported with a 2 lb flywheel weight on it made it docile on the trails as long as I kept it out of the main jet. However if cracked WFO one better be pointing where you want to go, the thing was a beast! Someone once asked me when it hit the powerband. I told him if you could hear it running it WAS in the powerband..

You can build a 4 stroke that will match its power all through the rpm range. Not just wide open. You just need deep pockets. And a competent builder who understands flow and valve float issues. Not stock tho!! 😂🤣😂
I started racing in about "74" to "81ish" and wasn't around anything but four strokes until I started racing. Elsinore was my first bike. GFB The guy that I bought my 500 from put on a freaking 46 tooth Renthal sprocket on it. It’s a tiny little thing. I’m eventually going to take it off and put on a 48 tooth steel one from Dirt Tricks which will still have a ridiculous top speed that I will never hit.

I have a lot of kids and so people look at me like im immature and never grew up because I still ride bikes....well it's the only thing that has ever calmed me down since I was four years old....don't know how to live without riding....My old man used to pick me up when I was three years old for the weekends on his Honda 754 with a four in one Kerker exhaust and I would sit in front of him and we rode all weekend....I would fall asleep on the gas tank to the sound of that engine....to this day riding is about the only time I am calm and worry free! Those were the good ole days....try to take your kid for a ride like that today on your motorcycle and they will put you in prison lol....whole new world and I'm saying this at only 38! Times are changing at a faster pace than ever and not all for the better!
you are right, i was going to say the same thing, he should have had them following him on that 500. but like you said, wrong lines and gear. and before anyone says shit about what do in know, i raced a 92 and 94 and a 96 cr 500 and i won my share. also lost my share. but i will say ive never lived like i did when i was on my 500. im 50 years old now a nd if dared by a friend i would buy another one tomorrow and get back into shape. (my kids are grown and ive put them through school so the time i have left, i can trow caution back into the wind.)
They were a blast to ride, we use to wear 2 chest protectors because of the roost. I race mx, grand prix, and a few desert races. You could always go into corners a gear high and feather the clutch and pulverize the guys behind you. Having the ports all cleaned and matched by Harry Klium, along with rework the cylinder head to get rid of the design issues Honda had. It
Clearly out powered the other bike on every hill. Just rode bad lines on a heavier bike. Awesome ride though I can feel the Adrenaline of the chase. Nothing like it
Hes out powering the other bikes because i think hes running an old 500 in a 450 class, and theres not a big weight difference between the two, but motor size does make a difference
Awesome, love it. I'm running a 07 450r and people think that is old but I'm still winning races on it. Just twist the thing on the right. Lol. Great job i love it!
I think that rider has balls of steel ripping that monster. You know that rider in the lead could feel that 500 breathing down his back.i wanted to see him take the lead and punish that boy. 2stroke madness.☠💪
Ricky Carmichael stayed on that POWERBAND like mf-er Kawasaki had very narrow powerband I raced 125cc and 250 YZ Brad Lackey rode Kawasaki way back when.
Awesome. The CR 500 still has a lot of power. You could see the rider making up some ground on ascents. I wonder how hard it was to ride this bike, given its older suspension design and less travel versus the newer bikes' designs and travel?
ua-cam.com/video/EzXZwqIkynw/v-deo.html check out the second half of this dude, Nev talks about racing the big 500 and how hard it was to keep pace with the rest of the guys! :D
it's a beast, the power is brutal, and suspension is lacking of course, but make no mistake, it's a motocross racer. must have skills to pilot these big boys.
It may be the wrong track for that bike, there wasn't enough space to open it up. I had an 86 CR500R and that bike really came alive in the power band. Most of the time it sounded like he needed to be geared down.
I was practicing at my local track a few weeks back and got behind a late 90's CR 500 on a big uphill leading into a step up. I took roost along way and it felt like someone was throwing baseballs at my chest.
Patrick Steinmark my dad growing up had an 86 cr500 and tells me stories of running from cops and his bike would pick up boulders in the ground and blow out their windshields. I never really believed it till I started watching cr500 videos and reading comments.
I raced 2 cr 500s. Third gear is the gear u ride all the time. Every blue moon....4th. I could tell the bike wore this guy down and probably gave him arm pump.
He is riding the bike off the bottom of the power ban and that will tire you out faster to uncontrollable power, I always would over rev to keep it on the backside of the power ban and back off the throttle and let it get into the torque less tiring ....you understand what I'm saying if you have ever rode the CR 500
Danny "Magoo" Chandler would frequently hole shot Trans USA races on his 1982 LOP Racing Honda CR480 starting in 3rd gear... and that was when they only had a 4 speed gear box! And I mean hole shot by 50' to 75' ever time!! First time I saw him do it was at Mid Ohio, one click up into 2nd then one more click up into 3rd and bam, blew away the pack by 75' into turn one. I about died watching that, what balls, har!! Those were the days:)
A CR500 (or RM, KX, YZ) with a paddle tire in the dunes is untouchable! It takes a bit to get used to the bike wiggling all the time in the sand (unnerving at first), but you you can move through the dunes faster than anything else because you have a ton of power and a single track. Friends on banshees or a quadzilla would try to keep up, but not even close.
Man, I can't believe this clip, thank you! Took me right back to my racing days in the 80s. So nice to hear the bikes without effin soundtrack. Full on, full off, just do it.
CRAZY to see the bike my cousin raced professionally keep up with today's bikes. They were BADASS!! If I remember right they went through clutches like crazy!
Thank you for sharing your ride!!! A truly iconic machine that we'll never see the likes of again. Great to see it holding it's own against modern machinery. Ride safe 😎
I just sold my 94 cr500 I have had since 97! Man I loved it everywhere. Dunes, track ,woods. These younger guys I talk too now say oh man those are crazy. And they vibrate. Yeah well they also will cost you your teeth if you get behind one. Few machines come on like a 500 2stroke. We competitive hill climbed with ours for a number of years. Want a hard take off. Put a 10 steel paddle on a 36 inch extended 500 and hold it wide!! It's awesome!!!
I remember going to watch the GPs here in the mid 90s!! Place was like a massive stadium with thousands of spectators and cheers roaring around the valley!! Such an awesome track!! Can’t believe they got rid of the jump before the drop off and the huge step up! Great to watch though!!
I remember those days, I raced amateur motocross in the late 70s thru early 90s. You had to respect big bores they would eat you up and spit you out. Sure miss that rush!. Great video.
had a 450 Husqvarna in the late 70s early 80s .the sound brought back sweet memories . like it's not even breaking a sweat .to run one of those full out for more than 30 mins. will test a persons fitness and endurance . most fun , scary (earned respect) bike I ever owned . man I miss that thing .
Fox hill What a track . Have happy memories from the 90's Everts..Albertine ....smitt..Nicol... Herring ...malin....smets...merv "the swerve " Anstie... To name but a few . Total hooligan top boys on absolutely fettled to the hilt moto cross bikes ... That fantastic smell of 2 stroke racing oil / fuel .... And 4 stroke thumper cross .. Forgot also .. Pit Biere..Marniq Bevoerts. Mark Eastwood . Total blasts from the past . The crowd of 30 thousand people Air horns and chainsaw motors (no blade ) with metal funnels for extra noisy exhaust ... The foriegn fans with their viking helmets on ..flags and banners . The smell of the burgers and onions cooking . The sound of generators.. Absolutely fantastic mayhem
I laughed so hard reading that!! I would ride one everyday if I didn't have to kick that pig. And it's so buzzy in the bars. Spoiled I guess. I did my best Superman impression on a cr500. Not cause I was jumping like it was an xgames event, but because every time you get cocky on thee ol Kickstarter (kick back)..... she reminds you that go gotta put your purse down.
Lemme try-er. Video b different. I've owned xr 100, Yz80, cr125, cr250, then 4 cr500 steelies or AF's. Completely different animal than 250cc n under. You grunt them ...... pretty much impossible to bog them out.....you can't put the gears as fast as a 500 will take them.......don't be a DUMBASS like this guy and run around the track at 8 grand. THE POWER IS AT 3,000 TO 4,500.....RELAX GRUNT THE MOTOR AND GEAR GEAR GEAR.....AND GRIN LIKE A CHRSHIRE CAT & THINK JOHN DEERE TRACTOR. TORQUE RULES.....IF you get it
Oh the memories..nearly getting knocked of my 83 Elsinore 250 with the crap this bike was digging up after he passed me..I will never forget the shiny metal tank with (2) orange staggered upper case T's on it..it went over the woops like a deer jumping a fence..
looks like the 500 was able to make up some time on those steep uphills...that track was crazy! Id be white knuckled in second gear at some of those elevation changes.....LOL~!!
I’m 60 years old next birthday and I fell off 3 times watching that👍😂 I’ve got a KTM 300, after 25 years of Harley’s..got back into dirt bikes a couple of years ago..in my mind I still think I’m 25 but the body says different..whist most of my mojo came back I can still hang with most riders I tend to fall a bit more 😂🙀👍🤣 That was an awesome video and I rode every corner with him, the CR 500 is a classic and he rode it well..
I'm 62 now and and if I try real hard I think I can still smell the Bel-Ray hanging in air down in the the valley on those early Sunday mornings arriving at the track. Man I use to love racing, I think a part of me died when I quit, I was about 30 yrs. old with 2 small girls and wife to take care of. That video sure brought back a lot of memories!
I've ridden for close to 45 yrs. Am 61 yo, slowed down a bunch, but there's still know body having any more fun than I am.I can't handle a CR5 to it's limits. The bike demands a pro level rider to use it for all it's worth. I could be wrong, but it sounds like you are being a bit of a braggart.
Foxhills in the 90's. British GP's with Rob Malin and Stefan Everts. Seeing Ricky Carmicheal struggle in the mud at the Motocross Des Nations, all on 2 strokes. Great track, great times and great memories :)

Despite the lousy lines and wrong gear most of the time----nice video
Moron , you think you can criticise a gp level rider ? What qualifies you ?
you are right, i was going to say the same thing, he should have had them following him on that 500. but like you said, wrong lines and gear.
and before anyone says shit about what do in know, i raced a 92 and 94 and a 96 cr 500 and i won my share. also lost my share. but i will say ive never lived like i did when i was on my 500. im 50 years old now a nd if dared by a friend i would buy another one tomorrow and get back into shape. (my kids are grown and ive put them through school so the time i have left, i can trow caution back into the wind.)
Dudes afraid to put it on the pipe....but love it...got my respect!
Lion Bear do it! And while you’re at it document it on UA-cam and share your journey. That’s something I would love to watch!
Yea good vid but I do agree with the bad choice in lines he could of won that race
Nothing like it
Gonna try my 01 cr500 at madoc track this weekened in madoc Ontario for the first time aha gonna send it.. Gonna say 2nd and 3rd most this race
Hes out powering the other bikes because i think hes running an old 500 in a 450 class, and theres not a big weight difference between the two, but motor size does make a difference
Yeah the suspension is clearly not as good but when they hit the big uphill it just flies up
Dylan McGuire I would say a new 450 is faster than a 500 twostroke.
We testet it with Enduros. And a KTM EXC 450 2018 is faster (race bike).
E D get someone that knows how to ride the 500 properly, and then try again
Awesome, love it. I'm running a 07 450r and people think that is old but I'm still winning races on it. Just twist the thing on the right. Lol. Great job i love it!
it's about how far you wanna twist that grip man! ;-D
999lazer yes sir!!!!
Fitness and ability count,s as much as the bike in this sport.
I think that rider has balls of steel ripping that monster. You know that rider in the lead could feel that 500 breathing down his back.i wanted to see him take the lead and punish that boy. 2stroke madness.☠💪
Nice riding and great control on that 500. Keep it up bud, very entertaining!
I raced a 1982 KTM 495 in about 1988 and the Hondas totally cleaned my clock. It seemed like they got 14 seconds a lap on me. It was amazing.
These 2 stroke vids got me thinking of NGK's, skimpy trophy girls, and broken bones- My youth ;)
I still have mine I will never get rid of it
A 500cc two stroke engine on a lightweight vehicle.
Monster dude monster
Ricky Carmichael stayed on that POWERBAND like mf-er Kawasaki had very narrow powerband I raced 125cc and 250 YZ Brad Lackey rode Kawasaki way back when.
Plot twist : He was in 2nd gear the whole time
threefiddyone yea 2nd maybe hit third once or twice but mostly 2nd
threefiddyone plot twist he got out rode than a bitch
Southern Renegade 4x4 Queen. is that your new title southern man.
threefiddyone Priceless
😂😂😂😂😂😂💯💯💯
That is the greatest track I have ever seen. It's great just watching the race from the video on the bike.
One of the best races I've ever seen on the cr500r amazing
It isn't the golf clubs, it's the golfer!
Bruin Doc stock cr500s make one a few more whp than ktm 250... It has a fatter powerband... We're talking 47 vs 50whp
Firestarter Not even fucking close.
M8 they had around 67-70hp
Didn't even hear him open it up , the others were pinging hard .... hahahaha
Have you ever ridden a 500? You don't rev them like a 250...
It may be the wrong track for that bike, there wasn't enough space to open it up. I had an 86 CR500R and that bike really came alive in the power band. Most of the time it sounded like he needed to be geared down.
Should have changed out a sprocket so he could have stayed in it.
This is one of my favorite videos on UA-cam.
I feel the rest maybe 60% of the engine was taking a nap
I was practicing at my local track a few weeks back and got behind a late 90's CR 500 on a big uphill leading into a step up. I took roost along way and it felt like someone was throwing baseballs at my chest.
Patrick Steinmark my dad growing up had an 86 cr500 and tells me stories of running from cops and his bike would pick up boulders in the ground and blow out their windshields. I never really believed it till I started watching cr500 videos and reading comments.
I has an 88' CR500 & yes this ones engine is barely being tapped lol
Well done that's a beast
Oke speed
Nothing like the feeling and the sound of braaaaaapppp 2 stoke all day!!!!!
2 strokes forever!
now that takes skill!
Especially a big bore 2 stroke bike
Big bore!
Indeed...those ruts are evil.
The engine and the power are easy. The frame geometry is just terrible. ;-)
Simo
One of the best POV's I've seen!
Raced Foxhill many times in the 80's & 90's great track, great times, great 2 strokes
👊🏼✊🏼💥💨
I raced 2 cr 500s. Third gear is the gear u ride all the time. Every blue moon....4th. I could tell the bike wore this guy down and probably gave him arm pump.
Yup, all my big bores were pretty much 3rd gear for just about everything, trailriding included.
How els you gonna stay in shape
this is a 250 rider on a 500, honestly i think for the first time...no torque control.
He is riding the bike off the bottom of the power ban and that will tire you out faster to uncontrollable power, I always would over rev to keep it on the backside of the power ban and back off the throttle and let it get into the torque less tiring ....you understand what I'm saying if you have ever rode the CR 500
j bird ... right you are!
Rip magoo!

I've owned '88 '89 '91 and '97 CR500's. I'm 59 yrs old and am taking my '97 out to Jawbone this weekend. A great machine.
Great job riding that CR500. Super Sweet ride..
The CR 500 is a red rocket. This bike was fun, I had one equipped as a supermoto in France.
This man is an outstanding rider with an ability to use that motor, I have a 500 and you would require both and I only wish.
It's cool they're still using the 1998 layout including those 3 legendary uphill straights.
Oooofskfcaa
خالطل متل البي توك متل
I remember going to watch the GPs here in the mid 90s!! Place was like a massive stadium with thousands of spectators and cheers roaring around the valley!!
Such an awesome track!! Can’t believe they got rid of the jump before the drop off and the huge step up!
Great to watch though!!
I remember those days, I raced amateur motocross in the late 70s thru early 90s. You had to respect big bores they would eat you up and spit you out. Sure miss that rush!. Great video.
I just turned 60 and still prefer my 1985 CR250R 2 stroke to my new YZF450. These old 2 strokes are timeless. Race on baby!
'OLD IS GOLD' not only applies to great music!
Nice motoring Sir !!!!!
All hail the desert king
"Crusty Demon of Track"
Minus the paddle tire 🤘
That was one bad ass track and fun riding along, thanks.
had a 450 Husqvarna in the late 70s early 80s .the sound brought back sweet memories . like it's not even breaking a sweat .to run one of those full out for more than 30 mins. will test a persons fitness and endurance . most fun , scary (earned respect) bike I ever owned . man I miss that thing .
Kicking ass on the ol Honda man your great !
I love my '96 CR500 to pieces. And back together again. 😁
Dr. Hugo G. Hackenbush 0
Omg this track is something
No words to express, I see heaven and 2 stroke engines are heavenly motors....
Just seems impossible for me to imagine this level of riding. I've Biden mostly road cruisers little off road. AMAZING
I love watching dirt bikes and love the smell of gas hahaha I use to watch my dad race when I was a kid in California. 😍
Fox hill
What a track .
Have happy memories from the 90's
Everts..Albertine ....smitt..Nicol...
The crowd of 30 thousand people
Air horns and chainsaw motors (no blade ) with metal funnels for extra noisy exhaust ...
The foriegn fans with their viking helmets on ..flags and banners .
The smell of the burgers and onions cooking .
The sound of generators..
Absolutely fantastic mayhem
They only have two gears, 1st and “ holy f..k”.
Hell yea!!!
That made me bust out laughing!
Imagine a modern 450!! They have even MORE power than the CR500

Great demonstration... Much respect for you.. thank you for sharing.
Id be white knuckled in second gear at some of those elevation changes.....LOL~!!
you and me both my friend!
Good job Nev wasn't afraid to hang loose!
I’m 60 years old next birthday and I fell off 3 times watching that👍😂
I’ve got a KTM 300, after 25 years of Harley’s..got back into dirt bikes a couple of years ago..in my mind I still think I’m 25 but the body says different..whist most of my mojo came back I can still hang with most riders I tend to fall a bit more 😂🙀👍🤣
That was an awesome video and I rode every corner with him, the CR 500 is a classic and he rode it well..
Dave keep riding you will get that mojo back
FC
IMPRESSIVE compare a 28 year old street bike to todays street bikes. not nearly that close
unfortunately roads and tracks are not only straight :P
Gadi ka naam kya hai bhai Kitni price
I raced a 88 cr500,open class in Greece,very nice time!
Best Bike on the world!!!
Nothing beats the sound of a 2 stroke. Those guys r good, that looked like a fun but challenging course.
If you ever seen the greats (ward, Johnson, lechein, Stanton), ride these at the LA coliseum, what a show..
2-stroke 500's back in the 80s was the best racing ever.
Nothing like the smell of premix in mourning 4strokes have killed mx too expensive too loud no soul
Apart from xr's King of 4 strokes.
How did he pay 15000 for a 125 that is double the price that they actually sell for now. He got scammed or something
@@isaiahwilson6225 Australian price, it also wouldn't be a 125. The adventure bikes sell at around that price or more
Jay Blanton That makes sense then
I'm 62 now and and if I try real hard I think I can still smell the Bel-Ray hanging in air down in the the valley on those early Sunday mornings arriving at the track. Man I use to love racing, I think a part of me died when I quit, I was about 30 yrs. old with 2 small girls and wife to take care of. That video sure brought back a lot of memories!
52 dislike from chicken ass riders that can't handle the heat of a 500...
A bunch of punk pussies.
Post a video of you riding yours. Would be badass...
Tinman Bigfoot Tracker nobody really can...
+BB gun Spo Wa. He's probably a little boy that's only ridden MX bikes on video games. They are a different breed these days.
Foxhills in the 90's. British GP's with Rob Malin and Stefan Everts. Seeing Ricky Carmicheal struggle in the mud at the Motocross Des Nations, all on 2 strokes.
Great track, great times and great memories :)
