FACT; Modern 450 has 20% LESS tourqe and 1 hp less than any 80"s stock cr 500. Truth bought to you by the heartbreaker the DYNO. all others are liars living in a dreamworld.
If you've never ridden one, you will never realize the balls it takes to stay wide open throttle on a CR500 for more than three seconds in that situation.
While racing in the Northeast with ACR I’ve had (2) 85 CR500s, an 86 CR500, a 91 CR500, a 99 CR500 supermoto street legal and also an aluminum frame 05 450 chassis with my 91 engine that Mickey Kessler built me. With all the free riding I did not one other bike beat them in a drag race. Wasn’t even close. My #1 85 CR500 was the fastest and most violent power delivery out of them all. That one was modded by Joel Macdonald in south Jersey, fully ported, head modded, DG pipe and silencer, RAD Valve and a 42mm carb. Had that one the longest out of them all till I got back into more modern 2-strokes. Got a 06 CR250 with a Chad Watts modded / rebuilt engine that has holeshotted 450s on the regular. 2-strokes for life!!!
I'm 2 stroke for life that's for sure but I'm happy with 200 cc's. I've never rode anything bigger than a 250. I had an RM 250 and I've ridden other people's CR 250's, YZ 250's and KX 250's. I have been on the back of a YZ 490 and once I rode a CRF 450 4 stroke. Maybe I would own something like that out in the dessert but my KTM 200 is plenty for me. I tucked a 200 SX engine into a 150 SX frame to get linkage rear suspension. If I ever went for another 250 it would be a YZ 250 because of the KYB SSS suspension or maybe a Beta 250 dual sport. I can't even imagine the power that a 500 cc 2 stroke has.
I remember the days of swapping out of the dome in the head and using a thin copper head gasket to raise compression. Then spending hours trying to tune the volume of the expansion pipe.... Good times!
Love watching these 500’s come back to life. My dad had an 87 CR 500 and watching videos like this brings back great memories….something about the sound of a 500 at start up and launching off the gate can be compared to the effect one gets from hearing the cannon run on an A-10. Brrrrrrrraaaaapppppppp
I had an '85. Fast AF...especially with the 6" Nankang rear tire i had on it. What a bitch to start though... usually just bump-started it, to save my ankle.
@@shreader327 Thats what I mostly rode...trails in northern Michigan. I was big strong rider back then. 6'3" 225. I rode a 250 RM Suzuki. I jumped on a buddies '85 CR500 and hit some big sandy berms. That 500 wanted to stretch my arms out pulling thru those berms . Thats when I really noticed the power. The 250 would bog down just a bit and just wouldnt pull nowhere near that 500. I wanted a CR500 since then!
You sir are a dying breed of talent. That bike will definitely separate the boys from the men. And you are riding it like it should be ridden. Too bad they don’t have a 500 class like back in the day.

For the record the 98 is not stock. It has an after market pipe. Lol just saying. I wish you guys would race the 500's you do have against the new 450 4pukes.
I remember getting roosted by Michael Byrne in the late 90’s, he was on one of those, was like getting shot in the chest with a shot gun. He as immediately a long way in front.
A friend had an 85 with the drum brake, I had the 91 250. That 500 was a beast and nearly put me in the hospital. Now his is gone and so is mine but I picked up a stock 90 500 for free. It runs perfectly, my friend just wasnt into it anymore and asked if I wanted it. I have thought of doing a gasgas or one from BVC offroad. I always hated the white frame. What to do?
I wonder how much faster and easier they are to ride with new suspension, I noticed they both have inverted forks, im sure it’s light years better than original right side up forks but how much better?
Actually, in '89 they were a huge leap backwards! Honda didnt really get the forks right untill '96, followed by a shock to match in '97. I went the Race Tech Gold Valve route with my '96, and its even better still, allmost on par with anything else out there, at least for me.
I watched Jeff Stanton, Jeff Ward and Ricky Johnson ride 500's at Budds Creek in 1990. Most of them would upshift as they rolled into tight corners then fan the clutch just a tad coming out and they were gone!
IIRC Honda and Kawasaki basically stopped developing their 500's after the 80's. The only things they'd change were the plastics and suspension settings. Still, they sound GREAT and I wish they were still making them.

None of these "500 two stroke" videos are truly representative of how people rode them back in the day. The tracks weren't balls to the walls, and if anything, we would lug the motor and be a gear or two too high in the corners :) There was a time when riders tried to conserve energy and not ride like maniacs.
Yeah it's kind of insane that it's the norm to ride a dirt bike like a maniac now. It started with Carmichael, Reed, and Stewart when a lot of people rode for fun and they made it next level competitive. I can't even fathom trying to ride in a race with the way things are, so instead I just ride by myself for fun in the mountains and desert where it's okay to suck at dirt biking.
