Back stabbing the infected hollows is a good way to avoid the toxic cloud as well. Love the videos btw, keep up the good work!
+Steve “LuckyGarth” Will do, man! I don't know that I've ever backstabbed those guys, actually. So the toxic just spews out away from you? Or is the invincibility frames from the BS animation that saves you ...
Either way, I'll give it a shot. Thanks!
+Polygoing I haven't tried with every weapon but most backstab animations kick/hurl the opponent away from you. They still spew the toxic cloud unless you're using a fire weapon. Just need to be careful you don't move towards them after backstabbing them.
the resurgence of this series got me back into dark souls, and it felt like a warm bed that i never should've left
+Logan Melius Cozy ... and thanks, man. I'm experiencing the same warm fuzzies with this playthrough.
+Polygoing I started a mage build, and ive actually run into a few people in anor londo and the duke's archives. I wasnt planning on pvp with this character but I might have to if there are still people playing!
Good point about the Painted World. It was the first area that they designed completely if I remember right. They toyed around with having Nito as the boss for it because the original design was different in terms of the colloseum in the middle as well as the one that makes up Priscilla's arena, but obviously they scrapped that idea in the end (it turned out better IMO).
+DIRTEHHARRY Now that you say that, Nito being a boss in Ariamis rings a bell. I vaguely recall something about the Stray Demon, too ... gotta go back and research that. Thanks, man!
+Polygoing Reckon they'll ever "release" the lore as they see it or intended it/ Or will they just leave it vague and head-canon...?
This series is so high quality, puts a smile on my face everytime it shows up on youtube (:
+Brendan groot Awesome to hear and thanks in spades, man! Happy to do my part to bring some joy.
Watching you deflect throwing knives with Forces makes me hope they bring that back in Dark Souls 3 but like, actually useful. I want spell parries that deflect the magic back at the user, and the same with thrown objects and Force. Just some kind of benefit that would actually make the player consider it over rolling out of the way or holding up a shield.
You've been cranking these out pretty regularly, nice work!
+Goo King Heard that. I freakin' LOVE spell parrying in DkS2 because it looks so cool ... right up until you miss one and get popped by a maxed out Soul Spear. Then you're hit with a moment of, "Why didn't I just ... ?" in addition to the spell.
And hell yeah, RE: upload cadence. That 2016 resolution is making good. ... ... ... so far. Thanks, man!
I had no idea about that spider shield trick, g-damn man, thought I'd discovered everything in this game. Thanks for the schooling Poly!
+Legend of Jonny I freakin' _love_ how you can still pick things up in this game, however big or small they might be. I feel like in almost every playthrough I watch I pick up a little something. Thanks a ton, man! And glad to help.
I use the R2 on the black knight sword to send the toxic bag enemies flying so they aren't in range when they explode, very satisfying.
+Kevin McLaughlin Hey man, sorry for the late reply - but awesome tip! I'd never tried it with the BK weapons, but anything to get those guys away from you before they pop makes a ton of sense.
I bet they look like water balloons, soaring through the air and bursting when they hit the ground.
Polygoing No worries man, you must have a lot of replies to get through. Lol, Yeah it looks exactly like that. Obviously you have to pick your moments like below them on a staircase, or the doorway on the balcony that you funnel them into. I like yourself hadn't even thought to use the Spider shield so thanks for that.
I love these, you have great knowledge about the game, great English and amazing commentary. All floats together through perfec, editing to a perfectly well rounded PvE video. As someone who normally doesnt like watching Lets Plays, I do enjoy this series a lot. also, I want to make smough to my waifu since I heard his voice...
+TheKornett Thanks a ton, dude! That's high praise; I've been having a blast rolling through this again and it's awesome to hear you're groovin' on it.
Smough's dreaming of you, too. I'll see if I can hook that up.
Aww man, that intro jingle, click my fingers along every time.
Out of interest Poly, which PvP environment did you prefer, DS1 or 2? Not trying to start a 1 vs 2 fanboy war, just genuinely interested.
And, oh man, did the Painted World have some tight level design. I'm hoping for some areas of this quality in DS3.
+Matt Ell Ditto on level design; Ariamis is a masterpiece. RE: PvP environment, I'll first cop out and then answer ... I like both, if treated as completely different entities.
I liked DkS2's non-instant backstab mechanics and the variety in character movement like being able to turn and run while locked on, running faster when unlocked and ability to strafe with a bow. I liked DkS1's frenetic pace and (in my opinion) tighter momentum system in movement where you could turn a little faster and wouldn't take quite as much time to stop moving.
If I had to pick, I think I'd take DkS1 by a razor-thin margin. The backstab abuse, to me, was a little less unsavory than the playstyles and reliance on baiting/reactiveness that evolved from 2. What about you?
Thanks for the props, man!
Polygoing I think mechanically, Dark Souls 2 did a lot of things right for PvP, like harder backstabs. However, for me it was marred by the fact that Soul Memory ruined a reliable meta, and the arena's became a bit of a hotspot for the "OP build of the week" type builds.
I'd have to agree with you on the adopted unsavoury playstyles and reactive play (parry fishing for dayyyys).
Oh, and the builds. The Havel Mages, the days of Mundane Santier/Avelyn. Whilst not intrinsically a bad thing (its actually a good thing), the variety of weapons in DS2 had the side effect of not all weapons being balanced in PvP. But maybe that's just me not remembering the crystal ring shield and all the other broken stuff back when DS1 released.
I can't decide whether DS2 was two steps forward and one step back, or one step forward and two steps back, in terms of PvP. And whilst I'm very excited for DS3, I'm sure there will be some weird gimmick mechanic involved in PvP that the community will almost unanimously hate.
Wow, that was long winded.
Usually the only time I kill Priscilla is if I want her dagger for my build or if I do painted world before O&S so I can get in those last few levels before taking them on it makes me more confident going into it.
+Codeburst Good call. One of my alternate routes is to get to Anor Londo and use the Dark Ember as an alt, using any chunks I might pick up in the Catacombs to get rolling on the Occult path.
I haven't played around with her tail dagger much as I haven't had a lot of success with Bleed weapons outside of PvE; it works like a freakin' champ against Smough and I always thought it was odd that Ornstein doesn't bleed. Wonder if that has something to do with him being a Knight ... maybe some secret power gained by Gwyn's champions.
Her dagger is really situational in PvP but i feel like most dagger weapons are really hard to use in that sense. It is pretty interesting to know that Ornstein doesn't bleed I guess I've never noticed but it doesn't make any sense because his armor isn't extremely good against bleed if I recall correctly. Maybe it is just something magical Gwyn did to his knights.
While occult weapons do have better scaling, they have lower base damage. In most cases divine and occult are basically the same, or the divine version is better damage wise in PvP. The composite bow is probably the only weapon that's better as occult than divine. The divine/occult modifier is an interesting PvE mechanic, which I think they should have added to PvP too. For example divine weapons could do more damage against darkwraith invaders and occult weapons could be more powerful in the hands of an invader.
Fucking genius.
+Jez My _GOD_, that would be sweet. Or maybe if you had higher faith you'd be more susceptible to Occult weapons. One of my biggest pet peeves is that Magic, Enchanted, Divine and Occult weapons all just normalize out to deal the "magic" type of damage in the split.
Curious to see how/if things are taken further with different damage types from 2 to 3.
+Jez Dude That's brilliant. Not even out of the realms of possibly either considering how care free From is with throwing balance to the wind. My only concern would be nobody using any other kind of enchantment for PvP.
Goo King Hypothetically, that could be remedied if there was a poison path/DeS-style bleed path. Additionally, being an occult/divine/enchanted/magic weapon, you still couldn't buff them. I think it could balance fairly well. Considering that DeS had rings that performed this function makes me think it could happen, if not in DkS3, future installments (whatever those might be).
xTheVisionary I'd love to see it attempted, that's for sure. If we could get all of the enchantment paths viable for PvP in some fashion that would be amazing.
Wow, Spider Shield is awesome for the Painted World...lol. Nice info, man. I knew you had extensive knowledge of the game, but damn, this one was packed full of cool stuff...like Ariamis once being a demo area. It makes a lot of sense, seeing how much they did with such a small space - classic From design.
+ReploidZero Yeah, man ... Ariamis is front of mind when people talk about Souls level design. That scheizze is tight and if not completely, near perfect.
The Spider Shield revelation came before this playthrough, but not long ago. The fact that there are still things out there to discover is cool as hell and I freakin' love that I can still get those, "Holy hell! That _WORKED_!" moments.
"This land is peaceful, its inhabitants kind..." I've only killed Priscilla once, all my other builds I've left her alone for the PvP reasons you mentioned and because she clearly has enough problems, being insane and all...
(Can't believe I've never used the Spider shield here, thanks for the tip!)
As for RSS dueling being frowned upon or even feared by the gods (rather than From neglecting to include it in vanilla)....um, sure, I'll buy that ^^
Great commentary as always.
+riddarhyttan I think when she says "this land is peaceful etc..." that it actually was before the chosen undead turned up. She says something along the lines of "but you do not belong", suggesting that the only reason you're being attacked is because you're character is trespassing somewhere they shouldn't be.
Then again, its not the chosen undead's fault that they got sucked into a Mario painting.
Ah yes, I'm getting forgetful of the lore and how convoluted time is in etc. etc. You're right, of course, including the involuntary art appreciation.
riddarhyttan Ha, I just chuckled to myself imagining the Chosen Undead thinking "what exquisite brushwork" during the painting cutscene.
Maybe the Chosen Undead was an art critic in Astora before they were locked away in the Asylum.
Now there's a thought. Gonna have a bad time in AL, then - 'so pompous and antiquated, dontcherknow'....Actually, that image is stretching my immersion a bit....
+riddarhyttan Gotta love half-cocked theory mongering, man. I hear ya on Priscilla; I always feel guilty as hell walking up to her, listening to her spiel about peaceful inhabitants and just starting to wail away.
I'm sure she wouldn't approve of my using Ariamis as a dueling arena, but at least we'd continue on in a live-and-let-live state with her peeps.
Thanks a ton, and my pleasure!

Dark Souls PvP in a nutshell.
+Jakuzure Nonon Needs more dancing.
Poly, what is your opinion on Dragonslayer spear(DSS)? I would love opinions from the fans as well.
Im curious what made you decide to use the partizan over the Halberd?
Priscilla is not really Seath's daughter. At least, it's just speculation like almost everything that's not set in stone via item descriptions.
Yes, the gods did fear her BUT she might also serve as a barrier for things that want to get out but have to stay in. She may be keeping the shit that the gods are afraid of inside that painting.
Well, I usually try to do some co-opping in the painted world. But whenever they want to kill Priscilla I just stand there not doing anything besides increasing her health. Priscilla best waifu. >.>
+Paladin Leeroy Oh, interesting twist ... so she's the shepherd that keeps the sheep from wandering off, or back out into the world. And you're totally right; I've come to accept "Seath begat Priscilla" as fact, but by the letter of the law that's speculation. _Strongly_ implied, but not backed by descriptions.
That's hilarious RE: Priscilla boss fights; your behavior as a phantom holds true to the persona!
Polygoing Hmm, haven't thought about that xD It IS true
Is valiable to use a divine halberd with this build? Thanks :)
+Alberto Fernández You could totally roll a Divine (or Occult) Halberd with a similar build! Depending on how much endurance you want, you should have plenty of points to spare and still have a huge chunk of Faith and good Vitality.
I have never killed Priscilla, how could I? She's there, being punished for just being born, taking care of those who, like her, havo no place in the Gods' world... how miserable must that be? She really means no harm to anyone! Poor little thing
+Valentina Mauro I'm with ya. I feel legitimately guilty attacking Priscilla. Sieglinde, too. Those are some of the only characters in the entire game that will not attack you at some point unless you start wailing on them first.
Poor little Priscilla, indeed.
