- Frode Barth playing some of David Gilmour's (Pink Floyd) iconic guitars in New York 2019.
Barth was invited to try out the most unique guitars from Gilmour's huge collection.
well, we really can say now that the guitar doesnt matter... what really matters is the skill and handle of the player...
man! you won!
What because another good player played one of Gilmours guitars and sounded good?
You forgot the pedals and amp :)
If you search for videos of Gilmour playing his guitar in clean signal, you'll know what i'm talking about, he plays infinitely better than this guy... and without pedals and amp
@@pablotapia702 I agree. His phrasing and timing is unique.
Love the cherry red he used on delicate sound of thunder.
he played Wish You Were Here with a bit of attitude...oh how I would have loved to play these guitars...I was there on 6/19/19..was amazing to be surrounded by these instruments that have been used on such magnificent works and performances
Ironically the red Strat was the one used to create the most iconic "Comfortably Numb" solo during 1994 Pulse concert in London, yet it was much cheaper than the Black Strat. 🎸 🤔
welll indeed .. to my taste the red strat is superior over the black strat....but taste is hard to discuss of course 🙂
@@yves-zv5ey
I think it's because black Strat is more iconic to Gilmour as he has been constantly portrayed with it in his heyday. I'd still choose black Strat over red one for that very reason, and I think it looks cooler, but I understand it's rather subjective.
Given the fact I cannot buy the black Strat for more reasons than one I'll be making my very own Gilmour Strat, as I have a fair degree of experience at relicing guitars. Should be something. 🤔
The most iconic Comfortably Numb solo is the original one on The Wall. Recorded with the black strat.
@@martindale1680
Yet the 1994 Pulse version of it is the most played on TV/radio/UA-cam. 🎸 🤔
@@Phoenix_cataclysm_in_2040 I seriously doubt that
His guitar has no differences with other guitars, the magic lies on Gilmour's fingers and soul. Only Gilmour produces gilmourish tones 😁
There is truth to it. When other people sample his guitars, it sounds like some guy at Guitar Center
Nonsense.
@@ramencurry6672 Probably because they're not playing through his ridiculous rig.
It's not the guitar that is iconic it's the player, always is the player (meaning David).
People are crying like David didnt donate these himself
Nice seeing someone play some different but very good styles on these guitars!
The Black Strat, Frankie and the Red Special may be the most iconic instruments ever
i would replace red special with double neck used by mr. page
@@ewefturkey yeah, that one's also very iconic, but it wasn't used in the records if I'm not mistaken
I couldn't believe how much the Black Strat went for.
I rarely see people with Red Special replicas in their collection. I have seen a couple with Frankenstrats. Almost no one has a double neck. But Black Strats? There is no end to them. Almost everyone has a Black Strat in their collection.
The red sounded best I think
That one surprised me, I wasn’t sure about the EMG single coils.
I own emg single coils and they sound great
@@Coopersboy7 I think I might look into them.
Set them pretty low. It’ll make them sound more vintage than if you set them to the emg recommended height.
Also, your vintage strat amp settings will need to be changed some for the EMGs. Treble up higher, less midrange less bass slightly. Set your amp up to make it sound like a strat should basically
Love the candy apple strat with the emg pickups
the bending, how do you bend?
Just....push
Or pull
"You pull the wires".
Without the hand of david gilmour those guitars don't worth a penny. Without him those guitars don't sound the same. A 100$ dollars Squier Strat sounds same like the famous black Strat under Gilmour's fingers.
his amps and effects play a much more important part in forming his sound
quite right
@@mrbowlingcrazy not really. He still has the exact same, instantly recognisable Gilmour sound when he’s playing an acoustic. Whereas anyone else could plug a strat into a big muff through a 100 watt HiWatt and sound nothing like Gilmour.
the red strat sounds the best. 🎸
I went there to see the collection before it went up for sale. It was awesome!! But i knew looking at the prices that the folks at christies had no idea what David Gilmours guitars were worth cuz they were all way under priced. Even a broke acoustic i thought i might be able to get went bonkers the day of the auction. Beautiful guitars
I didn't realize that a potential buyer could touch those guitars let alone play them. Must be nice to have lots of money. 🎶 It's a gas.
I remember the backstory on the white #1. Why didn’t they show selling price on that? It’s definitely the most rare of all the guitars on display.
I can’t believe he sold some of those
Amazing lucky you
I think he should have hit the stringer harder when playing Wish You Were Here ....😐
I am glad these guitars made so much money so thank's David Gilmour. You will go on for many more years I hope making more of some of the best music on the planet and your old gear will gather dust in wealthy people show cases never to be played again as you had them set up to do. The fingers and heart make the sound £s and $s have neither. Shine On.
That candy apple red strat sounds SO late 80s/early 90s
Such sad, to see those guitars in other strange hands is soul breaking really.
nah, just a tool in the eyes of the creator.. they are also pieces of art/history to others, so good for him to sell them for charity. Hopefully he will play Desert Trip II and he can show off something new
They're going to end up strange hands eventually. Why not under David's direction while he is living, and for a cause that he believes in.
@@ericbell6405 I like that
@@liminal27 He donated the money raised to ClientEarth which is a cause for the climate change crisis which is something he is partial too. Though I don't believe he will reap the results of his donation while he's alive. To each their own. For him a guitar is nothing more than a tool as Eric indicated. It's a chunk of wood in his lap. He's said in past interviews that it really doesn't matter what he plays since it always sounds like himself.
IMO, Gilmour could play a $200 Squire and sound better than 99% of the players out there so in reality it doesn't matter when someone is as skilled as himself.
@@ericbell6405 Well said!
"Money..it's a hit...Don't give me that goody good bullshit.."
I have a fender Stratocaster HSS with a hum bucker pick up. I paid $700 for it. Sounds just as good
Yep, but You can't Say "Another Break in the wall was recorded with My guitar haha!
yes , it's the same for me ...
Really, his guitars are nothing special. They're old and made of wood like every other guitar out there. No magic fairy dust or unicorns inside. Gilmour bought his strat for retail prices back in 1970 too. Only difference is that you need to record 40 years worth of hits and maybe yours will be worth 3 million dollars one day too. Until then....
He’s right about the red guitar lol.
Wow!
wth is Frode Barth?
Kjøpte du gitaren ?
Nej.
cool
I really don’t understand why they sell their guitars.. atleast the black strat
He got $4 Million for charity. I'd say that's a pretty good reason.
This guitarist is a master
Yeah its the player...
its like when voldemort tries to use the elder wand....and it doesn't work properly
Is the black guitar a relic or just heavily loved?
It's the original guitar from 1969. It's beat to shit.
Just tools of his trade old guitars like any other, its his spirit and mastership in his playing and craft and thats where the magic occurs
He could play a MIM Fender strat and make it sound good
These Cork sniffers will never emulate these sounds again
If that were true he wouldn't have spent so much time swapping out parts and necks until he found the right combination. People saying tone is all in the fingers and not in the instrument or gear are full of shit. It's both.
It doesn't matter what amp guitar ur going through if ur shite at playing
Ur argument is that if u give someone good gear they will play and sound as unique as him
Cop on u dope 😅
@@TheGazz74 That's not the same argument at all. A person's style is one element of their sound, as is tone, which is not the same thing. People confuse tone with sound. They're not interchangeable.
I agree the vetter the instrument and gear the sweeter and better the tone obviously
But the sound that comes out the speaker really has a lot to do with the player 🤔
@@TheGazz74 I would say it has more to do with the speaker. Not all speakers are equal and if the speaker can't reproduce it, you're not hearing it. Doesn't matter how you sound.
"Tone is in the fingers" is utter bullshit. It's everything combined.
All for a good cause too, but Gilmour will never part with the Lewis guitar on which he played his greatest solos
Greatest solos? You mean some of Echoes, and some of Money?
He barely used that guitar, only when he needed 24 frets.
Tone is all in the face…
So are bowel movements
How any musician can give you their life long instruments is beyond me. You'd have to hire a special cutting company just to cut my guitars out of my dead arms. No way I'm not very letting anyone have my strat and Les Paul, idc what the payout is
Agreed i have this guitar for not only 2 months and its already very sentimental and feel like i shouldn't lose her forever
@@swiar_d7057 neve,don't ever
I guess he just wanted some choice in what happened to them, he’s sadly in the last years of his life now.
I do wish they had gone to guitarists though, rather than rich twats who wouldn’t even know what to do with them. Sadly we’ll never be seeing those guitars or hearing another note from them ever again.
@@martindale1680 exactly. Give it to a kid that's a musician at heart but doesn't have a proper axe. Don't sell it to snob ah holes
Almost $4 million for the Black Strat...SOLD!!
So sad for these mythic instruments to be played with no soul...
If played at all. Sitting in the vaults for the rest of their lives, 95% of the time. Caged birds.
DACCORDISSIMO!!! SENZA ANIMA
Dude wtf are you talking about Frode Barths playing was fantastic in this
@@CEbding1996 Frode Barths knows how to play a guitar but he is no David Gilmour and If I didn't see who was playing I would still say that. The time wasn't even close.
you can make any face you want .
Gilmore could take a squire and make it sing!
😂 even I could to that !! Think he needed the toilet...
Buying Gilmour's guitar doesn't make you David Gilmour..
Nothing to do with Gilmour
Freeze dried Barf??
This what does my head in with English bands all there memorabilia is in America wtf what happend to ur roots
His guitar face is annoying.
fuck yes, jazz guitar face haha
I laugh at people that overpay for instruments.
but its for charity???
Ahh wood and money wonder if the trees know this is going on lol
Without effects many of them sound kind weak
They sound "weak" because the player is "weak", not the guitars or amp
@@conan5885 Nah it's the gear, dude is right.
why listen to frodrick when you can listen to the real thing
Tanta tristezza ......
Wish Gilmour & Co created a Pink Floyd museum in Cambridge, England, where black & red Strats and 12 string guitar would eternally reside together with them two heads from their Division Bell album cover and the rest of PF paraphernalia, to inspire young and not so young generations by letting them see those axes and items. Now nobody will see these guitars, and even when people would see them they would just look odd seen not in Gilmour's hands, like orphaned kids. So bizzare. And for what, the made-up "climate change" cause? Maybe they could stop chemtrailing us to oblivion, how's that for starters?
Some people have too much $$$$$
Who is this guy, he sounds dreadful
his expressions r wannabe type so r his accuricieses..... B ware !!
Bah… it’s soo embarassing
Can you play guitar without pulling stupid faces?
Has he been sent by North Korea?
He is so cringe
Oh this guy is annoying, made me stop watching
Never knew that was a Les Paul on the solo for the Wall. I’ll be damned!
