I did a hybrid black/red Strat - black Jimmie Vaughan Strat, single-ply black guard, EMG DG20 electronics. I went with Hipshot locking tuners, and I ordered a custom short trem arm. Aged white plastics to match the ivory EMG pickups.

For Gilmour's red Strat you're gonna want a nitro candy apple red body. The color on the classic bodies isn't anywhere near close to to the nitro body. The nitro body has a gold undercoat and a transparent red overcoat that makes the candy apple red. The poly candy apple red is just a one stage color. It's doable with the poly, but if you see it next to a real AVRI candy apple red body you'll be disappointed. I'd advise anyone wanting to make a parts red Strat look for a used nitro candy apple red body. In the long run you'll be happy you did. Oh, and for the neck. You defiantly want a 50's Nitro neck. The 50's necks have the truss rod adjustment at the heel of the neck instead of at the headstock. That's the way Gilmour is, and it's the way it should be. If your'e going to all the trouble it's only a few hundred dollars to make it correctly, You can get all the correct nitro parts aftermarket. Just get a Fender water slide spaghetti head stock logo and you'll be good to go. A Callahan vintage tremolo is also a great upgrade that doesn't cost much more than a use spec fender Trem if you don't mind not having fender stamped on the string saddles. You could easily replace the Callahan string saddles if your a stickler for authenticity. The Callahan saddles are definitely better than the fenders though. Anyway, good luck if you're making a red strat. To me its the definitive Gilmour Guitar. If you're looking for pretty much spot on Gilmour tones on a budget get a Mooer Ge-200, and check out gilmoursdigital.com. You can purchase packs of all the studio tones and well as the live tones up to Pompeii. The mooer ge-200 will get you the all the tones from the PULSE album. There is a bigger selection of tones for Helix and the Fractal systems that are phenomenal. But for the price the little Mooer GE-200 is very good for the PULSE tones. I'm in no way affiliated with gilmoursdigital.com, but I think all Gilmour tone chasers should know about the amazing tone packs offered there. You won't be disappointed.

Building your own is a great way to learn what you like. Light bodies are important and Warmoth is great for necks and bodies. Check out Callaham bridges and I like Fralin pickups. Fender offers the Eric Johnson pickups at a good price also. I've learned soooo much and finishing build #7 a 6.5 lb hardtail Strat now. My guitars ring like pianos thank you Angel Guitars !

Good job. I think the Red Strat was an '84 American, though probably built in late '83. He ordered it in Britain and it had to be shipped from the Land of the Big PX, IIRC. That was back when I was playing an '83 Made in Japan Squire sunburst with a maple neck that RAWKED, and that I bought at the Navy Exchange in Sigonella, Sicily along with a sweet Fender reverb tube amp. The sound of those two together was killer. Traded the pair in at Alpha Music in Norfolk, VA several years later for a new Strat and amp combo.
Eh, people should remember that CBS still owned Fender until 1985, and that Gilmour's guitar techs probably had to do a little work on the axe to get his sound right (though CBS had fixed the quality control issues by then, so no slam on the company). Still, this is why I personally consider the MIJ Squires of that same era to be at least equal to the Fender CBS stuff, but that's just me.
Anyway... the point of all this is that the guitar you window-shopped is GREAT. You could do "nitro" this and "aftermarket" that, but this axe EVOKES Gilmour, and with a modern sensibility and reliability that the Red Strat probably didn't start out with, given the technology back then. ;-)

  • @Barbarapape
    @Barbarapape Рік тому +1

This is one way of building a Gilmour Red Strat, i took the safer option and asked a highly respected
luthier to build one for me using the best Fender Licensed parts available with a birds eye maple neck
and the preloaded EMG pickguard, he also routed out the back to take a battery holder to make fitting
    new batteries easier.
The end result was stunning, it wasn't cheap but it is easily as good as Fenders Black Custom Shop one.
Now i have both to pick from.
Good luck to anyone building their own, getting the setup right is the hardest part.

Great video ... still I don't get it 100%. 😀 If I would like Gilmour's kind of red strat on a budget, I would buy any decent kind of Strat for around 500 / 700 box (there are plenty of option in different brands) and would just replace the mics and pickguard by the all in one EMG DG20 David Gilmour set that you can find online for 275 box. That will then give me a Gilmour Strat for under a thousand box and even under 800 box ... or I missed something ?

    A few comments:
    - You chose the wrong tuners for that neck. Those vintage tuners require a different hole size and mounting than the neck you chose. There is a version of that neck that accomodates those vintage style tuners.
    - There is a Mexican made body that uses the 6-hole mount for the vintage tremolo bridge & it also has the regular 4-bolt heel, so no need for a custom heel plate.
    - You need to make sure the neck is compatible with that body, otherwise you will need to drill out a hole in the neck for the correct position of one of the mounting screws (be careful not to drill through the fretboard!!)
    - May need to buy pickguard mounting screws
    - Also one might want to get a single ply white pickguard to be accurate if making a Gilmour replica.
    - Also need a white tremolo back cover plate.

@@landonbailey agreed, however the contour on the heel of the ultra neck will follow the altered contour of the body. The way i think that you have it, the flat part of the neck heel will extend far past the neck pocket and one of the holes on the neck will be exposed. It would work but would look amateurish and, i feel, would bother you in the long run.

Just remember, You're going to put $1400 dollars into this parts list and build a very good Strat. But when it's all said and done, you wind up with a partscaster that you could sell for $200 - $400. Or you could buy a MIM Strat or around $850, and have an $850 Strat. Or you can buy a top of Squier's line Vintage Strat for $500. In all of the online blind comparisons I seen, there's hardly any differnce in tone. With a little effort, or a few dollars, you can inprove the playability of any Strat. Your Choice!
