  • Episode 8: • [One on One with Kobe ...
Kobe Bryant faced Shane Battier dozens of times throughout his career, and while Kobe usually got the best of him, Shane knew how to make Kobe work harder on many of his shots.
Shane Battier was a 3-time Defensive Player of the Year in college, and as a rookie he tested his strength and defensive ability against the best player in the NBA at the time. Without Shaq, perhaps Kobe would have to work harder, and the Grizzlies would be able to contain him easier, right...?
Not on this night. The Grizzlies tried Shane on Kobe, they tried doubling, tripling at times, and even put Pau on Kobe to attempt to use the extra length to bother his jumpers. But Kobe was too fast, too skilled, and too motivated on this night.
Unfortunately for any good defender, doing a good job on Kobe sometimes made no difference, because a lot of his misses were unrelated to the defense. Kobe unleashed 56 points on Battier in 3 quarters, and set a new career high at the time. This was one of the 4 or 5 times in Kobe's career that he could have easily reached 70 points (not including the one time he did).
Now that both players have retired, they would likely show each other a lot of respect for their efforts in their many battles. Shane has given props to Kobe on many occasions, calling him the greatest competitor he ever faced, and his favorite player to go against. Battier reminisced about the 56 point game and said Kobe would have easily scored 70 that game, and possibly set his future career high on that night.
Shane later said he was happy Kobe's 81-point game came later in his career and not against him.
I know some of you have been asking for longer episodes, so I made this one a little longer. This was one of my favorite performances by Kobe, and I believe it is really underrated. Kobe finished 21/34 from the field with 56 points, putting up 18, 18, and 20 for each quarter. It's hard to say that he wouldn't have easily dropped another 18-20 in the 4th, and the only question would be whether or not he would have gotten to 80.
    Music by Joseph Jacobs.

Only true Kobe/Laker fans realize how many times Kobe could have really broken 81 points. 56 vs Memphis, 55 vs Jordan, 52 in 34 minutes vs Utah, 51 in 31 vs nuggets, 61 in 37 minutes vs New York. countless 40 point games in 30 minutes.

Like 9 times. But that mavs game when he got 62 he could of ended with 90+ points and this is why he could of ended with 90 Josh Howard fouled him hard and Dale Harris his ex coach was an assistant for Avery Johnson that year. And kobe hated that coach for treating kobe badly. He was focused and pist off. And a mad mamba is a god mamba.

That 01 kobe was on another universe. That's the year he also should of gotten dpyo but didnt get. That kobe was magical man I remember watching that game and just throwing the pillows from my couch and screaming because he did this at 22 YEARS OF AGE!! The NBA was still tough those years as well.

The most robbed athlete I have ever seen in my life. Kobe should of had more season MVPs and at least 3 more titles. Chris Paul and Kobe matched because both of them where killers in there own way. That was kobes Scottie Pippen. That man would of ended as the greatest player of all time hands down no debate.

The only players that come close to bringing people joy like kobe does when he plays are jordan probably AI and Steph Curry(last regular season). Kobe is always sensational....he has a bag of tricks and skills like no other had.

You can feel it in their game..there's players and then there's artists. Kobe, Jordan were artists. Every game you would see something exciting.

exactly....with kobe and jordan you were always on the edge of your seat waiting for the next moment of magic....as efficient as lebron is and with the stats he puts up he has never been the most box office guy in the league which is probably the first time we can say that about the current best player in the league....nice vids...bringing back great memories and feelings

My dude Rahul at it again! Thx again for another trip down memory lane! Love these vids. Keep em' coming! What makes your vids great is that you not only show footage but you combine it with excellent background music and narration that provide context. Quality work.
How quickly they forget... Let these young bucks know how truly special Kobe was!
Once he was in the zone, defense just became a formality at that point. It really didn't matter who was guarding him.
Imo, the only player currently in the NBA that has the same fire as Kobe is Westbrook. Although he's not as skilled as The Mamba, he is more athletic and explosive.
Kobe was a beast. He really was the total package. Refined skills, technique and finesse, inhuman stamina, low-key strength, basketball IQ, relentless drive, heart and toughness combined with superior athleticism.
Btw, never realized the young Ron Artest was on that squad when that Shaq-Brad Miller incident went down. Makes one wonder lol... I remember thinking that Brad and Shaq were both so lucky that he missed that punch lol

Kobe my favorite player of all time. Man, he could play like nobody's business. The greatest player of all time. Lord, we miss Kobe down here! Thank you for allowing him to be the Greatest player of all time, for being the GOAT, the Legendary Visionary player of all times. Kobe King of the Court, we love him so very much and miss him. Thank you, God, for allowing Kobe to be the amazing gifted talented player you created him to be. Thank you, but he was more than that, he was an amazing Father, Husband who loves his family as much as he did basketball, in the business world Kobe was destiny to be even bigger than he was in basketball, because of you Lord, your love, grace, and mercy, carried him threw. Thank you.

Met Battier at a bar in Houston around 2010. He was a good dude, and brutally honest. I asked who the hardest dude to guard was and before I could even finish my question he said "KOBE". I asked about Lebron, McGrady, etc... and Battier said "Dude, it's not even close" and went on to explain how and why Kobe was hands down the best player he'd ever played against. It was a really cool moment.

You should do a Raja Bell episode next. I absolute love this series, brother. Keep it going as long as you're still enjoying creating content in this particular vein. A Ray Allen or Rip Hamilton entry wouldn't be a bad one either, considering the long-standing rivalries that he had with both of them going back to AAU ball.

Could you imagine how much more of a great Kobe would've been without the injuries he had? It's the one thing Lebron and Jordan will have over Kobe, they both managed to avoid major injuries and/or surgeries.

      TheGGMan
Nah forget that kobe would of played through any Injuries. There was something both Michael and lebron never had and that was getting a trade vetoed. With cp3 I bet you everything in my life that kobe at the end of the day would of been the undisputed greatest of all time hands down no debate. He would of ended with 8 chips.

    • @bettyjeanstokes360
      @bettyjeanstokes360 3 роки тому +1

To TheGGMan, the injuries did not define who Kobe was as a player. Kobe players threw most of them, he was a dynamic, a hell of a player. He gave the fans what they came for and then some. Kobe never stops, he was always on top of his game. Just so amazing, Lord so many players wished they had the skills, the footwork like Kobe. No one can ever, ever comprise to Kobe. He's Black Mamba at his finest, now eat Kobe's dust! Man, I'm loving this, just loving it. Please keep those Kobe's babies coming, because the heat is on! I mean really it's on. Thank you, man, we appreciate it, and thank you God for blessing this talented young man to achieve all the things that he did in his lifetime. What an amazing Father, son, uncle, brother, and storyteller he was in the 2nd half of his career. Kobe, thank you God for blessing his parents, thank you because without them there would not have been Kobe, thank you.
