[One on One with Kobe Bryant] Episode 5: Bruce Bowen's Unorthodox Defense in the 2002 Playoffs

  • Episode 6: • [One on One with Kobe ...
Kobe Bryant faced Bruce Bowen in the Playoffs for the first time in 2002. The Spurs enlisted Bowen as a defensive stopper, and with his extremely pesky, sometimes unconventional and controversial style of defense, Bowen's presence on opposing perimeter players was a big reason the Spurs were the #2 defensive team that year.
But fans of non-Spurs teams, Lakers fans especially, found reasons to not respect Bowen's ability as a defender, mostly because of the questionable tactics he used to "stop" opposing scorers. Vince Carter, Ray Allen, Wally Szczerbiak, and more players were victims of his attempts to injure or simply instigate conflicts, and there's plenty of footage to show each.
Vince Carter, after scoring 43 points on Bowen, was thrown out of a game in the 4th quarter because he charged at Bowen for attempting to injure Carter, and the Nets lost with Vince off the floor.
But what stands out about Kobe, during his battles with Bowen, is that he did not give Bowen the satisfaction of showing that he was rattled. Kobe did not complain, fight Bowen, or beg for any sort of punishment from the league. Instead, he dealt his own form of punishment by sending Bowen and the Spurs home on his way to his 3rd straight championship.
Consider this series vs. the Spurs, as well as the shown highlights of Kobe closing out games, as more proof that Shaq was not carrying the second coming of Jordan during their 3-peat.

Kobe's tolerance to pain and to be able to continue to play is one of the most underrated part of his legacy.

That's how stubborn Kobe is 'coz he loved the game so much.
I remembered he accidentally dislocated his finger in a game and then let Vitti popped it back for him and then continued to play. What a monster. Mamba it is.

And this is the bottom line. The stats won't show toughness. It won't show will, heart and the ability to be clutch when most needed. It won't show how Kobe would often take a broken play and turn it into points. We all know how great Kobe was, but those of us that have really paid attention know he was far FAR greater than even his great stats suggest. Magic knows this. And so does MJ, Bird, and even LeBron. And you should know it too. Ask the greats who was truly great and two names will be mentioned.....one of them is Kobe.

Terrance Mann yes... whenever he was asked about Bowen, he never called him dirty nor he complained about Bowen's defense. Kobe even respected him. Kobe's basketball mentality is far greater than most of today's whining superstar. and they all said Lebron is better than Mike. Mike is far crazier than Kobe. Mike is a lunatic assasin. Mike would kill you in a game if you your shadow offended him. Mike and Kobe, two crazy assasins on the hardcourt.

Very true. It just shows how different the NBA is today compared to just 15 years ago. Today any hint of dirty play is replayed 100 times and debated, but back then Kobe who had the biggest right to complain said nothing about it.

And Kobe never complained or said anything bad about Bowen’s defensive tactics. On the contrary, he praised Bruce’s great defense ability and competitiveness. Kobe saw Bruce as a gladiator in his own right and did not allow anything Bruce did to keep him from meeting the objective-trying to win the battle and the war.
