[One on One with Kobe Bryant] Episode 5: Bruce Bowen's Unorthodox Defense in the 2002 Playoffs

- Episode 6: • [One on One with Kobe ...
Kobe Bryant faced Bruce Bowen in the Playoffs for the first time in 2002. The Spurs enlisted Bowen as a defensive stopper, and with his extremely pesky, sometimes unconventional and controversial style of defense, Bowen's presence on opposing perimeter players was a big reason the Spurs were the #2 defensive team that year.
But fans of non-Spurs teams, Lakers fans especially, found reasons to not respect Bowen's ability as a defender, mostly because of the questionable tactics he used to "stop" opposing scorers. Vince Carter, Ray Allen, Wally Szczerbiak, and more players were victims of his attempts to injure or simply instigate conflicts, and there's plenty of footage to show each.
Vince Carter, after scoring 43 points on Bowen, was thrown out of a game in the 4th quarter because he charged at Bowen for attempting to injure Carter, and the Nets lost with Vince off the floor.
But what stands out about Kobe, during his battles with Bowen, is that he did not give Bowen the satisfaction of showing that he was rattled. Kobe did not complain, fight Bowen, or beg for any sort of punishment from the league. Instead, he dealt his own form of punishment by sending Bowen and the Spurs home on his way to his 3rd straight championship.
Consider this series vs. the Spurs, as well as the shown highlights of Kobe closing out games, as more proof that Shaq was not carrying the second coming of Jordan during their 3-peat. - Спорт
Kobe's tolerance to pain and to be able to continue to play is one of the most underrated part of his legacy.
Jagk Jagk too bad there was no comin back from that Achilles smh he had a good 2-3 yrs in em
Jay Diop idk after the Achilles injury and when he came back he looked good and had a pep in his step. The shoulder injury and mostly age just screwed him up after that
Kobe Bryant was still good after the Achilles injury he just wasn't athletic enough to be the number one option and to consistently beat double teams
Yeah he was still good enough to put up decent numbers I just mean he wasn't as good as he should've been.
Jagk Jagk when kobe injured his achilles he begged to play next game but they denied him.
That's how stubborn Kobe is 'coz he loved the game so much.
I remembered he accidentally dislocated his finger in a game and then let Vitti popped it back for him and then continued to play. What a monster. Mamba it is.
Kobe never gets the credit he deserves, great series you have going on. AS a kobe fan I really enjoy them, sadly haters are gonna still hate.
nice bro
Same here
because he cheated on Vanessa and did not care his about Gigi and killing her with his selfish acts of his what a loser and ball hog!!! i am glad he is gone from the NBA the world is much better without his selfishness!!
kobe have gone through bowen, battier, artest, kirilenko, iguodala, allen.... and so many elite perimeter defenders... no one stopped him...
Don't forget Tyshawn Prince and Hamiliton
Don't forget Ruben Patterson, the self-proclaimed "Kobe Stopper".
Johnas Dela Cruz what? I STOPPED HIM in 2K until he started making contested clutch shots and made me rage quit...
Hamze Ahmed that was total team defense they gave my boy hell in that finals smh but one on one nobody on Detroit could hold him either...
@Hamze Ahmed prince yes, not as much Hamilton but Hamilton would be one of the better defenders nowadays lol
2 rings back to back with a broken index finger on your shooting hand....Players nowadays would have sat out. Kobe use to put on a show in the early 2000's. One a kind
Mike J l
O
Like Rondo...
kobe is the most underappreciated player of all time
cityu english are you serious?
this headass right here
That's a lie, you're being very overdramatic and not sincere
Right after MJ and Lebron
And this is the bottom line. The stats won't show toughness. It won't show will, heart and the ability to be clutch when most needed. It won't show how Kobe would often take a broken play and turn it into points. We all know how great Kobe was, but those of us that have really paid attention know he was far FAR greater than even his great stats suggest. Magic knows this. And so does MJ, Bird, and even LeBron. And you should know it too. Ask the greats who was truly great and two names will be mentioned.....one of them is Kobe.
facts
And this is why KOBE BRYANT IS THE G.O.A.T.
the thing is.. it wasn't dirty defense to kobe. he just considered it good defense
Terrance Mann yes... whenever he was asked about Bowen, he never called him dirty nor he complained about Bowen's defense. Kobe even respected him. Kobe's basketball mentality is far greater than most of today's whining superstar. and they all said Lebron is better than Mike. Mike is far crazier than Kobe. Mike is a lunatic assasin. Mike would kill you in a game if you your shadow offended him. Mike and Kobe, two crazy assasins on the hardcourt.
Very true. It just shows how different the NBA is today compared to just 15 years ago. Today any hint of dirty play is replayed 100 times and debated, but back then Kobe who had the biggest right to complain said nothing about it.
Lol Draymonds mentor xD
Defense was played like that regularly. Only reason Bowen is known because the Spurs won.
Are you a Bronsexual? Have you ever thought of becoming a Bronsexual? Now is your chance..
Kobes mentality was on another level. Few have ever had that type of mentality in the nba.
Bowen tried...but Kobe prevailed.
This should not be overlooked in regards to the GOAT conversation. Period.
Imagine if 02 Kobe played during this era of basketball. The dude still put up 26 5.4 4 8 in that series with all the injuries he had alongside dirty plays with defenders all over your space. Take all those away and he would have a field day.
Bruce himself who is a reporter now will happily acknowledge that he was the leagues dirtiest player but also one of the best 2 guard defender ever.
lebron would rushed to the hospital, be on life alert eating through a straw if his ankle was stepped on.
Brandon Caron and then come back from a 3-1 series
Eder Mora with the help of refs
and zaza ban in the league
comeback for what?
@@UncleJay27 dont forget about that stupid lebron puppet NICK WRIGHT.
Wow! This video proves me that Kobe is better than I thought he was.
lol @ last clip of Bowen, "How do I stop this guy?" My god I miss the Mamba. You just don't see that type of passion, intensity, toughness and skill in the Association anymore. What a Legend, Kobe is. Thx again for another great upload, Rahul! Keep 'em coming!
Great video series, also lets keep in mind there wasn't constant social media attention on every single play in 2002. That's why nobody payed it much attention.
It’s sad that some people have to play dirty and try to hurt another player to win. But you know what Kobe still persisted and won. 😢
And now Greg Popovic got what he deserved, his Spurs got swept and he lost one hell of a year
TestChannel8855 yep and he was crying lol
Greatest 1 on 1 player ever
love this series, thanks for the great work
man,,,, this is so dirty.....
Man, i love this series, simply amazing. We want more!!!
And people say lebron over kobe LMAO
I knew Bruce Bowen was dirty but dang man. He needed Metta World Peace on the squad then. It would not went down like that. Exactly why he is top 5. No complaining just getting buckets and getting back to work. Kobe G.O.A.T
You need to send this video to the herd
For all tv personalities that doesn't have idea what kobe play trough
When all of them assume lebron is better than Kobe playing in the weak east conference all his life
And they argue he went to the finals 7 straight? Ofcourse he will wonder if kobe is in that weak conference he prolly be in the finals 10 straight lol
moral of the series- dont go 1 on 1 with kobe
You can one on one kyrie and loss but not kobe haha hell destroy you haha
@@malandaytv7553 confused
One on one with Kobe Bryant is such a hidden gem.
Kobe was the baddest player of all time no one had more heart guts grit then kobe
Rahul, this series is fantastic. Keep up the good work
Thanks! I will do what I do
Bruce plays dirty and that is a fact ask Vince Carter i remember the time he want to kill Bowen in tje spot lol. Kobe is a kind of player that doesnt exist in the modern NBA HE DOESNT WHINE OR FLOP .
did you not watch the video... pretty clear cut stuff
see that's how kobe haters are. they see what they wanna see. the can see bowen cheap shot kobe a whole series and because they hate kobe, say "he was just playing hard"
MrShehateme12288 yes,fuck those haters
True.bnever saw kobe flop tho. I agree
No one can beat him, neither physically or mentally
Its crazy how kobe never complained about dirty players
He needed World Peace then, Bowen would not have gotten away with it.
Takes notes Lebron....
That's y tony Allen is the best defender In Kobe's option
Tony Allen never played dirty. Great guy and competitor
People really be out here calling the Warriors the dirtiest team of all time when guys like this single handedly have more dirty plays than the entire Warriors team combined. Smh.
And Kobe never complained or said anything bad about Bowen’s defensive tactics. On the contrary, he praised Bruce’s great defense ability and competitiveness. Kobe saw Bruce as a gladiator in his own right and did not allow anything Bruce did to keep him from meeting the objective-trying to win the battle and the war.
subbed
kobe is amazing like always.
Nuff thanks
Great video man. What's the track used at the end? Great beat and melody
Joseph Jacobs - Secret Place
There are way more instances that show Bruce Bowen is being more blatant. These plays are just physical defense. With the rules today, Bowen would get called for more fouls.
Bruce Bowen just like Pepe in basketball :)
the reason why og's keep saying the league went soft.
Kobe "8"......Unstoppable!
Kobe 🐐
i was waiting for a vid like this...there are countless times when bowen was just dirty and tried to injured other players. point blanc period. I like pop a lot but he shouldnt have said a word when he had a player doing that for almost a decade.
do we see the same thing? so he didnt put his foot under players? so why are there countless videos on youtube of him doing that ? as for rodman i agree.
The NBA changed their rules to allow the shooter to have their space coming down from a shot
Yes they did make it official recently, but they did call it once in a while in the past if there was body contact.
this vid is really just a reaction to coach pop saying that what zaza did was unsportsmanly. in light of how he coached bowen, he comes off as really hippocritical
Actually I wasn't trying to say anything about Popovich's comments to be honest. It's surprising that he defended Bowen but I respect him too much to think less of him for it
If kobe flop bowen would be given a flagrant but that not kobe's business
i'm surprised kobe didn't retaliate. probably bec its the playoffs. i remember that forearm to the neck he gave mike miller for smacking him in the face.
It's Bruce "Lee" Bowen, baby!
Now i see why Kobe was so relentless when he gave Jalen 81 just imagine if we still had players in the league like Bruce Bowen in this soft leaque today I'll be a lot of fines and suspensions
bruce bowen would easily be ending up in jail on today's nba.
Mamba Forever
LeCramp LEFT THE GROUP
Kobe had on some Concord 11's in the thumbnail
just old school basketball
player from nba now need to watch this video.. lol
Mamba got levels.▄█▀█●
Today nba is soft
Do a video on how the east guarded Jordan if you want to see crimes of abuse.... Specifically Knicks.. You don't even have to do the Pistons. Peep the Cavs too..
If this were to happen to lebron the nba would have the entire spur roster and their momma suspended.
Career high in scoring was 8.2 points per game! Is the 0.2 like a fifth of a free throw? 1:40
Lol that's his points per game
Is lebump lefloop lequeen stay the game? Lol! His egg crack!
Zaza the biggest dirt to ever play.
LeBron is a good human being outside the court
This is just a double standard did everybody forget that when Bowen was playing you were able to actually physically defend your opponent then you are right now. I have to say this Zaza hit J.R. Smith in the face and no one said anything actually the Warriors in game 3 was abusing J.R. throughout the game so I'm still wondering why think of someone that plays literal physical defense to what Zaza did to Kawhi.
if it was lebron he wwoudlve been out for 4 seasons.
Kobe had 5. Tim Duncan had 5!
Seems regular thinhs in NBA in rhe 2000s nothinh wrong with that
You couldnt Jordan because it would be a foul. Just saying...
This is who Zaza got his footwork from, Spurs fans! Stop complaining about 2017. The Warriors were coming back while Kawhi was in the game and you would've lost in 6 had he stayed in the series anyways. Leave me your tears so I can enjoy them along with your salt so I can put it on my fries. Thanks! Have an amazing day!
dont know if Zaza did it intentionally but karma is a bitch
Hello po Grant Giba
12th
man...
of course, the league was anti kobe, nothing new
And They Were All Replayed And You Can Clearly See It’s All Intentional And Dirty
most Legend players thought the way kobe did bruh he isnt super special to that regard
Jamie Horman but that's what makes legends what they are
lebron dont.. how would he have acted in those situations?? not as mature as kobe, thats for sure
Dude, Bowen was just a soild all around defender. Yeah he played tough but you're lying to your self if you think the NBA wouldn't protect Kobe and would just let Bowen get away with "dirty plays".
I'm not lying to myself, the NBA did not protect him at all during this series.. nor did they protect anyone during these situations in those years unless it was very obvious to everyone (like Bowen kicking Wally in the face). He is a solid defender, but also a dirty one.
Are you blind?.. crazy
You cant compare one of the elite defenders in spurs history to the foul made by Zaza pachulia. There is a diference between be a dirty player and be an amazing defender and bother the player u are guarding. Its a fact that bowen has a reccord of dirty plays but compare him to pachulia. Come on guys seriously?
This video is definitely a bit bias here. Sure Bowen had many illegal defensive plays but he has many more great and legal defensive techniques. I know that's not the topic of the video here but I just want to make this fact known
No argument there. He was a great defender. It's just that he was dirty as well, which made people not like him.
The host is such a cry baby and doesn’t know basketball. Guys like this is why the NBA is so soft today.
So Kobe getting his wrist stepped on is the host complaining?????
Yeah this was dirty af but Kobe wasn't the cleanest player ever either, how about all the elbows he used to shove players, the off hands he used to drive etc are all dirty illegal plays.
