I am a japanese businessman 58 years old . I like this kind of music very much, but in the past my father destroyed my plates I had many originals, he only allowed japanese music and not from the black man. But now I can listen to what I want!!
Otis gave me a free 8 hour piano lesson when I was 19 yrs. old. Nicest person you'd ever want to meet. His wife was a character and great singer too. In my opinion, his piano colorations are unsurpassed.
Depressing, I own hundreds of blues and jazz albums, and I am still finding really incredibly great musicians I didn't have before. How many will I miss before I die.
hey man, lets help each other out.... Lets be friends online and send each other artists. Maybe this will help make sure we hear all the good ones atleast.
This song actually made me cry once, no kidding. Not because its a sad song or anything, but once it was just going round my mind, I went to listen to it and just that earnest, heartfelt human honesty made me tear up. I guess there are times when we all need to tell the world that it ain't nobody's business.
I have to admit....no way will I ever play like Otis Spann, but I reckon given a bit of rhythm backing I could give it a good shot. Harrogate England ain't exactly the home of the blues but I still try to carry the flame. He was a terrific inspiration to me all those years ago, and it's great to be remoinded of him.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, African Americans have always blown me away with their god given talent. The emotion here combined with amazing piano skills and those heart wrenching vocals is just simply brilliant. I would love to see a resurgence in this wonderful music. It would make the world all the better for it. Mr. Spann really knew how to lay it down!
It's taken 43 years of my life to find Otis Spann. No one has never played the blues as deep as Otis. A gifted legend we lost too soon. Thank you Otis. Your passion, musicianship, and intellect will be forever cherished.
The guitar is 'The Hoss', Muddy's guitar. My ideal blues band would be Muddy, Otis, Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers, Willie Dixon and Fred Below which was Muddy's studio band for some of his 1950s definitive Chicago Blues recordings. I've not heard anything better in the 55 years that I have been listening to the blues. Spann could play with anyone. Here he is with B.B. King ua-cam.com/video/t84AfeSPSHY/v-deo.html
I'll be 23 soon, i first listened this when i was about 15, and even after all this time this still the greatest thing i have ever heard. The amount of emotion and feeling a listener can capitalize from this is huge. anyway, thank you
Youre lucky u got this at 15, i didnt get to discover this till 30s (basically this last year)....this should be on the radio, im sure the demand is there
I was really pleased to hear this. In 1957 in Harrogate England I was playing piano in a hotel and my girlfriend at the time asked him what he thought of my piano playing. He "He's nice!" a remark which has kept me going all these years. He did more with his left hand than I could do with two, though maybe now I could match the way he played . What a great blues player and sin!
What a wonderful comment in respect to this great artist! His left hand abilities were phenomenal, especially for a nonclassically trained pianist. Actually, his training/formative years were in COGIC and BAPTIST churches where the best R&B/jazz/blues artist ever seen, recorded or heard, seem to emanate from. I put him up there with Avery Parrish ( of 'After Hours'), fame with Erskin Hawkins, and Art Tatum, and man, that's really sayin' something. This goes to Derry8867, one year ago.
I remember being familiar with a few other versions of this and thinking "something about this song would sound great with Otis Spann's voice". Look what I've found!
The best....... you know you cant just up and play blues you have to really feel it you cant buy it nor learn it ....it has to happen to ya! have mercy lord!!!! Yah!
You heard 'em. Please do feel free to move on up the road if you cannot embrace this heartfelt master singin' a heartfelt tune. I discovered Otis almost 50 years ago, turned my axe into a blues tool and even learned to copy best I can, Mr. Jellyroll Baker on piano. So, respect.
I already thought Otis Spann was a genius in his playing, but now that I'm really learning to play this song, I am shocked by the brilliance of the guy. Rest in peace, Otis. You'll be playing forever in our hearts.
Really wish I had this version on CD or spotify. I really love his voice, and the only recoeding I have where it's got this level of gravel and sadness have a lot of electric guitar and harmonica on it, which is nice but gives it a real different feel
CLASSIC, This is how you do it, not loud guitars playing at a million miles an hour or shouting singers etc its all about time and the feel, watch and learn, watch and learn.
I am a japanese businessman 58 years old . I like this kind of music very much, but in the past my father destroyed my plates I had many originals, he only allowed japanese music and not from the black man. But now I can listen to what I want!!
Hirohiko Nishikawa Freedom is a good thing. Take it anyway you can get it.
Hirohiko Nishikawa you have missed out on soooo much blues! I’m sorry. Keep listening...it only gets better!
Ohhh.. So sad to hear that Hirohiko Nishikawa. Love d blues!
That’s horrible and so messed up and racist😡 everyone deserves freedom I’m so sorry
Love it Hirohiko! Thanks for sharing- rock on brother!

I agree, he was the best. Tragic that he died so young. Lucky, lucky you to have known him and had him teach you.
Wow that as a memory :)
You are very lucky!
He was a genius. How fortunate for you to get a lesson from a true master of the craft!
Wow really that’s so cool!
"Let me tell ya somethin.." **goes off on the piano** damn I love this
I'm 41. My dad used to play Otis Spann daily. He was the reason I have played piano for 32 years. This is it. Good stuff!
🙂
Depressing, I own hundreds of blues and jazz albums, and I am still finding really incredibly great musicians I didn't have before. How many will I miss before I die.
Jake Nelwood
Another of looking at things, Jake, is that the road to your end is paved with endless musical delights.
hey man, lets help each other out.... Lets be friends online and send each other artists. Maybe this will help make sure we hear all the good ones atleast.
Jake Nelwood a lot. You won’t have the chance to listen to all the great artists and tracks...and I’m just talking about the blues!
HARD TO BE BLUE WHEN YOU HEARD THE MAN HIMSELF WORK THE IVORIES
Just one more…
Everything he played was pure gold! The king of blues piano.
Wonderful
The man,
Why doesn't this Otis Spann video have millions upon millions of views?
Racism! Pure, And Simple...
Cause people are stupid.
@@shaserv and ignorant as well . . . .!!!
Thanks Kenneth via Otis Spann 💖 🎹
Our mother promoted Otis in Scotland in the 60s along with Howlin Wolf
.We remember her Blues Junction with ❤ R and I.🎉

You know that's when you really appreciate the blues ..

Wow I’m so glad I found this video!
Otis Spann, possibly the best bluespianist ever. Great inspiration for me. Fantastic music.
One of the great masters of this truly American artform.
It's taken 43 years of my life to find Otis Spann. No one has never played the blues as deep as Otis. A gifted legend we lost too soon. Thank you Otis. Your passion, musicianship, and intellect will be forever cherished.
Christoph S it took 16 years of my life and i already felt it's like a loss
This is so bluesy. He's got two ashtrayes, one drink and one guitar on the piano. How blue can it get
Do think he was smoking pot by any chance?

Who's counting, probably forgotten and pilled up between breaks. But yes, it's not completely orderly and muffled.
I'll be 23 soon, i first listened this when i was about 15, and even after all this time this still the greatest thing i have ever heard.

GREAT --only way to say it!
God makes a connection with music and your soul. No matter what's going on in my life listening to good music like this takes me to a better place.
A true gem,,he was incredible..died too young.
I was really pleased to hear this. In 1957 in Harrogate England I was playing piano in a hotel and my girlfriend at the time asked him what he thought of my piano playing. Blues doesn't get much better than this!

wow, I thought I loved all the great divas who've sung this, but his version just left me feeling -wow!!
I'm so grateful this exits
Even on Mt Blues Olympus this incredible version is revered. Otis is The Blues Personified.Tell me what I'm talkin' about !!
I just listened to Jimmy Witherspoon’s version. Unfortunately, those people who don’t know have not heard the best version.
Just wonderful
Otis will live forever in our hearts. 22 thumb-downs?? If you don't like this music then move on! YT makes it too easy to show disrespect anonymously.
amen
You heard 'em. Please do feel free to move on up the road if you cannot embrace this heartfelt master singin' a heartfelt tune. I discovered Otis almost 50 years ago, turned my axe into a blues tool and even learned to copy best I can, Mr. Jellyroll Baker on piano. So, respect.
We can only assume they didn't like the guy introducing Otis.
Wonderful string bass playing.
A deep woody sound as a foundation. And those driving but understated brushes.
We don't see the upright bass player in the video - wonder if it could be Willie Dixon?
what a fantastic track! just heard this for the first time, the word talent doesnt do him justice.
I already thought Otis Spann was a genius in his playing, but now that I'm really learning to play this song, I am shocked by the brilliance of the guy. Rest in peace, Otis. You'll be playing forever in our hearts.
I love this.....this is food for my soul
Best lovesong ever

It is too bad that we have none of characters like Otis now, that we have to live on the past.
I love to listen to this big artist.
