First came across Otis in my very young blues phase in the early 1960s - I (from a remote part of the north of Scotland . . .) went to university in Glasgow in 1964 . . . and explored all the second hand shops in the harbour area . . . . soo I managed to acquire a couple of ancient LPs from Otis of Otis from there - I still have them!!!
Oh my goodness, Mr Spann where have you been all my life? That gentle touch on the piano just makes me want to dance and I love your blues. Hope you're happy, where ever you are.
Sweet Jesus, this man was brilliant! Gave me goosebumps! Mr. Spann really knew how to speak to the soul. I'm sure he is entertaining the good Lord with his incredible talent. God bless.
He blended a blues shouter style with incredible warmth, feel and sensitive harmony in his singing. No mean feat. To my mind he's up there with Muddy as a singer. Loved him from the first time I heard him, mid eighties.
I saw him with the full Muddy Waters band at Ronnie Scott’s, once American musicians were allowed to accompany the band leader. Listen to the sensitivity of his singing & playing, just beautiful.
this is possibly the best blues track ever to my mind, and I know that's a really stooped thing to say. This whole session is amazing, just pure Otis, I prefer this to his 'band' his silky voice and beautiful right hand............
++Teucer Wilso A tremendously plaintive blues number is Mamie's Blues by Jelly Roll Morton, simple quite different from his usual jazz band-based playing. There're are also two hugely emotion-charged blues piano solos by Jimmy Yancey, How Long Blues (slow take and without his wife singing) and Mournful Blues. Not the technical virtuosity of Spann, but so beautiful nevertheless. Give them a whirl. As a Blues fan, I'm sure you'd appreciate them as well.
@@nevillegriffiths4395 Memphis Slim is a beautiful player too, Champion Jack Dupree worth a listen...... Just in terms of piano that is. Don't get me started on guitar!
A true genius : it's so fair that many blues fans did put some money in his grave marker subscription in Aslip, ILL cemetery. He deserved SO MUCH that modest acknowledgment, for all he brought to us....
I used to have a subscription to Keyboard Magazine. They used to celebrate artists like this. Then one day they put John Legend on the cover. I cancelled my subscription. They have since going out of business.

Jesus-Christ, not Jesus.
If you only use Jesus- you are talking only to the material, but not to the Spiritual.
Otis Spann, who else could play better blues piano than him. I still wonder, after all these years.
He blended a blues shouter style with incredible warmth, feel and sensitive harmony in his singing. No mean feat. To my mind he's up there with Muddy as a singer. Loved him from the first time I heard him, mid eighties.
Glad to see that others enjoyed and still do the magic of Otis Spann.
I shall never forget seeing him in London We were both born in 1930
John Whitehead So did I with Muddy at American Blues Festival.
Lucky you
I saw him with the full Muddy Waters band at Ronnie Scott’s, once American musicians were allowed to accompany the band leader. Listen to the sensitivity of his singing & playing, just beautiful.
After all these years Otis plays like the best Scottish single malt. Others are good but he is the very best for.

if you want to leave here, you gotta sing the blues
recorded in denmark in the early 60s after a decade spent playing on some of chess's greatest recordings by muddy waters and others.
