I just ordered one on Amazon. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve needed this. I always have to take a bolt to Home Depot and if you need to know the threads in a bolt hole like say, in an engine or machine you’re screwed unless you want to drag it to the store with you. This will be a huge time saver.

The difference in the sets are the material they are made of. I’m going to get a stainless steel set! 👍 I think the aluminum sets would be more vulnerable to getting nicked up. 🤷‍♂️

Thank you for finding / showing this individual set . A person will certainly have their choice whether to choose the set on the cable or the set individual which may be handier . I’ve come across one example recently . I was almost sure but didn’t want to guess. I needed to confirm the size for a wheel cylinder . While under a car , it would be challenging to use the set on the cable . That would prompt someone to cut the cable and remove , in a pinch . Well , the individual set allows someone to quickly check thread pitch . The set on the cable would probably be useful in a store where fasteners are sold . But again , we would have our choice .
I appreciate that you’ve made this video for our benefit . All your videos are for our benefit and very much appreciate your sharing .
Yes , to confirm that we need to be vigilant when it comes to course and fine thread pitch . This can / will happen with metric and SAE .
I know I’ve made this error and I’ve a feeling that this may be a common mistake if we are not careful .
All in all , it is a good investment to have one of these sets since using a tap and die set to check thread doesn’t always go smooth .
A rethreading or chaser tap and die set works better but is another expense to a diy’er if not used commonly and price justification is an issue . Either of these thread checkers will save money in that fashion and time as well . They would definitely have their place in a lot of tool chests .

I have the cable sets. I also have a good hardware collection. Sometimes to get around the limitation of using the cable set in a threaded hole in close quarters I just try bolts til I find the guy that fits. But you could also cut the cable so the checkers are loose and make a holder for them by drilling holes into some scrap wood. Or if you prefer you can cut the cable and get one of those screw on cable clamps and still store them on the cable.

Great idea, I have the set threaded on a cable. It hasn't been too difficult to use. After all, you're often looking for a bolt to match so you select the correct bolt with the female side of the threaded part, then try the new bolt out on the engine. So, you don't often have to spin the whole threaded cable. Even so, if I was buying it now I'd probably get the case without the cable as you show here.

Them thread set you got of thread ck is cool . But them 120 for a pair of cable cutter. You can get Klein or channel locks for like 30 to 40. Bucks . And harbor freight has some a lot cheaper . Especially if you are going to use them for rope. Or. Hoses etc. On. That's kind of material they will last a long time . For 120 I can buy 6 pr. Of cheaper ones with lifetime warranty.

Excellent tip. Donny. I’ve had one for years. Cable type and yes, if you are checking a thread sticking out of a block or something, the cable is awkward. Might have to get the boxed set now. One thing, that first size is not 8/32nd. It is #8 (diameter) by 32 threads per inch. Not sure where that standard came from.

I think it doesn’t go fractional until after #10. So it is handy to have a drill gauge or a great memory. Just another good reason to use metric.

@@davidduma7615 You are right! I took 4 years of what we called "machine shop" where we used metal lathes, vertical and horizontal milling machines, micrometers, a small forge, etc. in high school between 1973 and 1977. We learned the nomenclature to use taps and dies correctly and cut our own threads. It threw me off that Dony seems to have said "six-thirty secondths" at about the 1:11 mark. The manufacturers should have included the "#" symbol for "#6 diameter, etc.

    It’s not 6/32!!! It’s a number 6 with 32 threads per in!!!

Definitely handy and the price is reasonable. You can kind of get away with using the classic gauge that comes with most tap/die kits most of the time though.
