I pulled the plug wire it still would not die!! Finally choked it out with my thumb pulled the rope and it fired up without the plug wire hooked up… the gas was so bad it was running like a diesel.. changed the gas and now it works fine lol..

Greetings Taryl & Fellow Grass Rats:
I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your informative videos on lawn equipment repair. I've always been an imitation reactive repair person. Willing to attempt minor lawn mower routine maintenance procedures & a few simple repairs once something broke, But, since I have been watching your channel, I have found ample tutorials & guidance to give me the confidence to attempt more intricate & involved repairs. Most recently was a Troy Built TB30R 30" Cut small tractor lawn mower that was left for dead by a former renter. I was told the mower deck had a bent spindle shaft from running over something while mowing the yard. The sudden impact of the mower coming in contact with the obstacle was said to have been so traumatic that it not only destroyed the mower deck spindle shaft, but also bent the crankshaft in the Breaks & Scrap 'Em engine. The old shot mower was left sitting in the driveway, exposed to the elements for over 2 years. Later on, as the residents decided to move out, they of course abandoned the old mower in it's resting place, sitting on the driveway. I thought, what the heck, what do I have to lose? I started in on the mower. First removing the mower deck & belt so I could investigate the engine to see if it was salvageable. As it turned out, the engine crank was not damaged & it would turn over. Your favorite, Nikki Six Carbatrator was a mess. Among other things, looked like it had concrete in the float bowl. I was able to clean that thing up & rebuild it. Cleaned out the plastic fuel tank, replaced the inline fuel filter & intake filter, installed a new battery, shot in some dino farts & she fired right up. I couldn't get Elkskins image out of my head!!! The engine ran ok, but got even better with some basic carb adjustments. So then I focused on the mower deck. I discovered a badly bent blade. No surprise there. But after I removed the blade, I found the deck spindle shaft wasn't bent. But, the 6" pulley mounted on the shaft was. I replaced the pulley. Installed a new 30" blade, reinstalled the mower deck & now I have a working riding mower to use on that property while renovating the house, preparing it for sale.
I credit my ability to work through these issues to you & your crew & your "how to" videos that show it can be done, even by me. Thank you for what you do. Keep up the good work. It is much appreciated.
    Sincerely, JGA from Louisville, KY.

Naptha is what they used to call "white gas", used for fuel in camp stoves and the old Coleman lanterns, and is also what cigarette lighter fuel is. Has a very low boiling point. What you're basically doing by adding naptha, is replacing all the volatiles that evaporate out of old gasoline, that creates the combustible fumes, which are what initially combust and ignite the rest of the gasoline.

Seeing is believing. Thanks Taryl! Informative as usual!
At the refinery crude oil is distilled into many different compounds (fractions) that range from asphalt to propane and many others in between.
It helps to understand that gasoline is a cocktail mixture of those different fractions. You’ve heard of summer and winter “blends”?
In winter, especially for you grass rats that live in colder climates, more butane is added to the gasoline cocktail for easier starting.
Many times when gasoline goes stale and begins to smell like varnish, the lighter fractions of the cocktail have evaporated, leaving only the heavier, oilier fractions in the can or fuel tank.
You witness this in summer when your gas can swells up with pressure. When you remove the gas cap, some of the lighter fractions that have evaporated due to heat escape.
Just sharing for those inquiring minds who like to understand how things work.
In this case, fuel from Taryl’s slop (waste) barrel is made more burnable using this product.

We did an experiment with almost a perfect 50/50 ratio of water to gasoline and it would still run on the stuff, not great but it ran period! Because of such a high ratio of water to fuel it was actually producing steam out of the exhaust while it was running! The bonus was steam cleaned the top end of the engine so it's a win win win situation. Though it's not cheap stuff but for people with a boat or hard to access gad tanks? It's priceless! ❤❤❤😊

Ethanol free is all I use in my small engines. It’s well worth the extra money. Fortunately I live in an area with generally low humidity so that helps if you leave gas in your tank or storage. Fuel shutoffs are essential though long term with any fuel or you will be cleaning your carb

My snowblower had a mix of 8 month old gas in it, it hasn't run right the last couple of years from sitting summer over summer, carb wasn't fully gummed up, I added this into a full tank with some fresh REC-90 mixed in. Let the snowblower run for about an 45 minutes and it started running like the day I got it. Waited a week or so, fired it back up and still running smooth and working very well. I don't know, but the PRI-G seemed to have cured what was making it grumpy. Also, my wood chipper sat ethanol gas in it for almost a year, it wouldn't run well choke was all messed up and it just didn't run right, added the PRI-G and ran it for 30 minutes and it sounded better and better, now it's running really nice after a few tanks of gas run through it. I only put REC-90 in my tanks now with PRI-G, worth the extra $$ for no ethanol IMO. Just one mans experience. Also, great channel and videos, thank you for posting and testing everything that you post and test. Love the channel.

If I heard correctly, this fuel he was trying to get the engine to run on was contaminated with oil and who knows what else. A fair evaluation would be to add it to truly stale gasoline. How long does it take for gas to go stale?

@@Watchyn_Yarwood It varies based on temperature, exposure to the atmosphere/humidity, ethanol content and I'm sure other factors. I've seen it start to turn in as little as a month or two here in Florida as the ethanol absorbs humidity and ruins it fairly quickly. That said, I had a family member store their generator in my shed for about 6 years and when we went to prepare for a hurricane, we found it had gas in it all that time (usually drain them and run until all the fuel is out of the system). We opened the cap to find the gas didn't smell bad so we tried it and it fired right up. He also had some gas cans that were full and that gas was also good I think because they were full and sealed tight. The funny part was we opened one and used some, and within a couple of weeks the gas in that can was totally rotten. Once the air touched it it was all over for that old gas. We ran the rest of the sealed cans in our vehicles with no issue.
But yes, it would be more accurate to use old rotten gas rather than gas mixed with oil, but it's still impressive that it ran on that.

As mentioned, it's primarily naphtha. A gas engine will run very well on naphtha (better than most modern gas blends you can buy at the pump); naphtha is less refined than gasoline, but has the interesting characteristic of raising octane and increasing combustibility; but running a high percentage of naphtha also increases emissions (contains Benzene), which is why it is only used as a gasoline additive to increase octane.

@@AtimatikArmyYes I found that out. The point being stale gas loses its volatility, so I was wrong about the octane but right about the important issue that it increased the combustibility. IOW, at some point the stale gas became diluted Naphtha, which runs very well in low compression engines, or engines that run at a constant rate because low octane knocking is primarily an issue during acceleration.

Nice to find a product that actually works. I admit I could be totally wrong on this but as gasoline is exposed to the atmosphere, the lighter fractions of the fuel blend which help the engine to start easily will evaporate off and leave the heavier fractions of the blend behind. If left long enough a sludge deposit is left behind in the carbatrater bowl. Gasoline goes through some chemical changes as it ages and I'm curious how the Pri-G actually works. Saying "chemistry" or "science" isn't an answer. What does the product actually do? Let me guess - they use the best snakes in America. Thanks for the vid.

Hey Taryl, My mom used to wash tough dirt out of cloths with a bar of FELS-NAPHTHA SOAP. It had the actual petroleum produced Naphtha, the stuff that's the claim to fame in your PRI-G, in it up until 1964. As an emissions fuel economy and drivability expert for GM for 36 yrs, I would like to say that what you experienced is exactly why GM went to a system using a microprocessor to change fuel mixture continuously on gasoline engines. There is a system on ALL GASOLINE AUTOMOBILES called "closed loop" that monitors the Oxygen level in the exhaust stream, using an O2 Sensor that creates a small amount of electrical current, proportional to the Oxygen level in the exhaust. The microprocessor takes that small current and uses it in an algorithm to change the amount of fuel the fuel injectors admit into the combustion chambers from rich to lean and back to rich, that process automatically compensates for the differing combustible components in the fuel. (different fuels have differing amounts of combustibles in them) If effect, the car's engine management computer changes the A/F ratio from rich to lean and back to rich 10 times/ second trying to hold the A/F ratio the algorithm is calling for. You do it so automatically with the amount of "choke" you apply when you cold start a gasoline engine. You were going from fully closed choke (full rich) to fully open choke (full lean) to keep it running. I think at one point you eventually applied some % of choke to give the engine the A/F ratio it needed to run smoothly. That is what closed loop does on EVERY GASOLINE POWERED AUTOMOBILE. Oh, and I almost plumb forgot: I use Chevron's TECHRON fuel additive to clean those deposits out of the fuel system you so carefully explained that PRI-G will not do. TECHRON WILL CLEAN IT by dissolving it into small particles and passing them right through with the fuel. I don't know what Naphtha does to stale gasoline, but if it rejuvenates it somehow, I'd suggest putting in some TECHRON to keep things clean while you're a burning the stale fuel. ben/ michigan

This will make the ethanol and water mix and then fall out to the bottom because ethanol has a higher affinity for water than it does with gasoline. I have NEVER used ANY "stabilizer" in the 20yrs that I have owned my MTD Yardman rider "Breaks & Scrapum" powered rider. Never drained the gas at end of season and RARELY use anything but ethanol gas. The engine ALWAYS starts in about 5sec and runs SMOOTHLY immediately after shoving the choke in!! The "electric shutoff valve" in the carburetor probably has a LOT to do with not having any issues!!

You will not get Stabil to run in a small engine after a couple of years. PRI-G will run after 2 years with no problems.

@@jasonbusch3624 That's not true in my experience. I've had no problem using sta-bil. Last year I started using sta-bil diesel for my diesel engines. I've had diesel go bad sitting in my Kubota for 2 years. Fortunately it's simple to drain and prime the system to get it running.

    • @jasonbusch3624

@zetamale7952 I have bought many pieces of equipment that was treated with Stabil. The gas evaporated and left a dark maroon colored syrup in the carburetor. One was so badly corroded I had to drill the fuel inlet out with a drill bit. I got the carburetor clean but ultimately ended up buying a new carburetor because the needle and seat was so pourus from corrosion it would leak all the gas out. I have never seen a problem with diesel except algae growth in the fuel tank and through out the fuel system. I have diesel that is 5 years old that is treated with PRI-D that is currently running in my tractor.

This may have been mentioned already...but when oil is added to gasoline, it results in a leaner mix as the oil takes the place of some of the gas. Depending on how much oil was in the barrel, it might have been running that little engine so lean that it was surging...and pretty sure that was a fairly cheap Chinese engine and those are already jetting pretty lean for emissions purposes. For sure, the gas from the tractor had NO 2-stroke oil in it and there was still some surging...but I wonder if at a high enough dose, the Pri-G also leans out the mix a tad?

    • @kd5byb
      @kd5byb 4 місяці тому

I forgot to mention - looks like to me that Pri-G does some good. The $30 per quart / $100 per gallon (Amazon prices) is a little steep, so I probably won't be buying any. But if I ever need a product that can freshen up gas, I'll buy some.

This additive must be combining with the air on the molecular level if the engine only runs with the choke on .Up in Alberta, 20 years ago we built a plant that combines Oxygen in the gasoline chain. It was built primarily for the California market. MBTB is the acronym I believe. But I think the plant has been mothballed 10 years ago for not producing the targeted market and economic returns results.
    But very interesting video .
I'd be interested in you doing a video on how to tast gasoline for ethanol content and how to remove ethanol from a gas can before you put it into the tank and possibly ruin fuel system parts like what is happening in the automotive industry.

Great video Taryl! A snake oil that may not be so oily!
I have a question though, I’m the final segment with the nasty gas (without oil in it) why was the engine still surging at full brittle but smoothed out under idle? Even with new gas, sometimes engines will do this, can you explain? Is it a bad governor or governor spring? High speed carb jet need cleaning? I’m just trying to save myself (and my neighbors) money by fixing lawn equipment! Thanks to your videos, I’ve saved my neighborhood well over $2000 in the past couple of years! Because of EPA regulations these small engines are required to meet certain pollution standards. In other words they’re tuned lean. Thus the elimination of carburetor adjustments. The carburetor’s are Fixed jet carburetor’s no adjustments. When they break in or have a lot of hours on them they need more fuel to smooth out. In order to get more fuel you sometimes have to drill out the jets. Older engines you would simply just turn a screw. There’s yur dinner.

@2:06 Gas refineries DO NOT buy PRI-G. It would be prohibitively expensive. Instead they buy the raw materials. This is snake oil at it's finest.
Just like Oxiclean, the active ingredient is sodium percarbonate but is only in 40% volume. The rest is fillers. Then they charge for those fillers and fancy packaging.
Just buy sodium percarbonate in bulk and save.

It's time to test this for many months like you did the other fuel additives. With all of the comments about it being "just naphtha" it would be worthwhile doing a test with adding Coleman fuel to the stale gas and see if it has the same effect as Pri-G. If it does, run a head to head test over many months like you did with the other fuel stabilizers. If you run the long term test, store your fuel in a metal container. I've seen naptha evaporate right through a plastic container without softening the plastic.
