Aah…I see that overfilling even happens to professionals. I thought I was the only one that often overfills my saw’s oil reservoir. So easy to do. 😊
Here’s THE solution to overfilling any oil - bar oil, car oil, whatever. Get one of those valves that screws onto the top of quart-size oil bottles and opens and closes by twisting. These routinely come with several adapters, one of which allows the valve to attach to a Stihl bar oil container. You will never again need a funnel and all the mess that entails. I have used this setup for more than 20 years, and don’t spill a drop of oil. Gas, yes; oil, no.
Use a squirt bottle to fill the oil
For anyone who might be wondering about the tank vent/valve - I cut one apart a month or two ago. Inside is a spring and a ball. The ball is directly behind the hole and the spring presses the ball against the hole. Using air and/or solvent to try and clean the area where the ball seats might fix the leak if a piece of dirt got between the ball and the seat.
Thanks a lot for the tip on that. I also repair my own equipment,
With the oil caps, no need to replace the whole cap, just replace the rubber sealing washer on the cap, A really cheap part. I use genuine stihl ones.
The 026 was one of the best saws Stihl ever made. I had two of them back in the day and ran them with 24" bars.
I so much agree I like the balance of the 026 better than any saw lve ever ran .
Yes I do agree with you fella!! Greetings from Poland 😉
I still run an 026 as my go to saw, mine has the heated handle too quite rare for this option to be on this saw
I have an 026 also love her
I have 3x ms260c. My go to reliable light do everything saw 😊
Very detailed explanation of what to look for and do to fix a leaky saw! Better than ANY other video. They don't show all the steps. They may tell you about them but don't show it. Awesome thanks to you Mr Donny!
Great Video Don , my 1992 026 has cut 25 cord for most of its life I Got a New saw for felling use the 026 for light duty , I have replaced 2 air filters 1 oil cap 1 fuel cap and 1 oiler lines 1 fuel line in the last 10 years . 31 year old saw and it still runs great just used it last week tornado went through my area and two tree limbs come down in my yard .
Great saws!
What a great video! I have the same Stihl chainsaw and this made me an expert in fixing it. A little story about how I got it: I have a relative who said that there is a chainsaw that they would like to sell. They have about 10 Stihls, but they never sell any. They are quite an alcoholic brigade, but nice guys. I was quite sure that they really mean that it is good, but I knew nothing about chainsaws and this one was looking really old. One guy used it that day, and he was absolutely drunk in the evening. He could barley say a word. I asked him if the chainsaw was good, and he just smiled and said: "it is a good chainsaw". At that moment I knew that he was being honest. :)
I've been putting cardboard under my 026 for way too long. I tried troubleshooting it in the past, but I couldn't find decent instructions - until now. I replaced the intake hose yesterday, and no oil leaks today. Great step-by-step explanation!
damn idiot
....I recently restored an old Stihl 026 given to me by a friend who gave up on trying to get it to run again after many years of sitting on the shelf....
I love the saw....it's a real screamer and cuts like a dream....this DIY video is gonna come in handy in the future...thanks for posting Don!.... 🙂
I do the same thing you do concerning ordering parts. I tend to order two of something so I have another, especially on items I know I will run across. Nothing makes a customer happier than saying" I already have that part in stock." Not that I keep a big inventory because I do not. I run across these saws on occasion and love how reliable they are. I have run across the leaking vent issue before and generally most guys refuse to get it fixed or just live with the slight leak. An awesome video this time. I really enjoy your videos.
I had the same problem with the same saw, I tried aftermarket cap as it was 5 times cheaper than OEM and it broke once I tried to screw it. So I replaced the o-ring from the old cap with the o-ring from the new cap and it's working for few years already. No need to change the cap as the OEM is the best. Just need to change the o-ring.
I just bought a new OEM o ring for my 028 WB. Worked perfect and cheap.
that was a superb demonstration. thank you
I like the old school Caps on the gas tank and the oil tank instead of the flip up Caps on chain saw s
11:40 I do this everytime. Thank you for making me feel better. Excellence job!
I’ve overfilled the oiler so many times and I know better It fills up fast near the top I find . Another great video.👍
So easy to do!
Thank you so much for posting this video, Dohn! My friend asked me to look into his leaky saw. His saw is 30 years old. Your photography was excellent. I stopped it and did screen captures at every stage and saved them to my photos. I will have a great permanent record of the entire procedure. Thank you so much. It is also really rewarding to see that you have been so successful that you have upgraded your tools to Snap-on Tools! They are a joy to work with. Have a blessed new year. John.
I have an 026 which is not leaking oil yet. Thanks for a great video and now I know how to stop the oil leak if it does occur.
I do have the exact same 026 saw that I bought new thirty years ago and it still runs great. Mine leaks a little oil but I always drain the gas and the bar oil out after I'm finished using it for the day so it leaves very little oil residue. I always hand tighten my gas and oil caps and never use the screw driver just for that reason to not break them. Great video and Thanks for making it. This is the best video I have found for this saw. Thank you for the part numbers also. I may make these repairs pretty soon.
That saw had almost every possible problem but your persistence paid off. Great job!
Don I appreciate how detailed you are on the repairs.
You are so good to explain , in detail , thank you 😊
I have an 026 with the new style "flip up" cap that used to leak like a sieve. I cleaned the “flip up” cap liberally with brake cleaner and wiped if off with a clean rag - it has been about 3 years since it last leaked a single drop. I would recommend cleaning the "flip up" cap before replacing it.
My Dewalt battery powered saw used to spill almost all its oil overnight - I tried everything including buying a new oil cap - since that saw never gets transported off the property I just store it on its side with the cap pointing up in the air - problem solved - no more overnight leaks - even when I am using it I just lay it down on its side since a single drop of biodegradable bar oil is to expensive to spill. It does not leak when in use - strange!
Oh wow nice how to, I’ve have a saw that just leaks bar oil all the time, going to take a look at that and follow your procedure.
That's Don. I enjoy the step by step during the removal and their parts. Once removed you explained the part# needed to replace the part.
Another fantastic informational video, Thank you Dony for sharing your knowledge with us. You good Sir are an excellent small engine teacher!!!!
Dony your work Is really Amazing and u really help US doing things on ourselves.....greetings from Italy
Greetings from Canada!
Good day Don Interesting. I am glad I am not the only one who over fills Interesting seeing inside of bar lines.
Thanks
Very good tutorial video, and the thing is with chain saws, they all leak oil eventually, if used regularly.
Your videos are so informative! You literally taught me how to fix my own lawnmowers and chainsaws. I still like watching them to keep my skills in tune. God bless you. John.
Thanks for your professional education....
I used to bring my 260 anually to the dealer for maintenance and repair of the oil problems.
I paid €65,- each time and still had oil issues.
Today I took it apart myself: The complete inner side area around the clutch has never been cleaned. Old saw dust mixed with oil residue turned into a layer of dough, hard as concrete, covering the entire inside.
Not able to clean it with compressed air nor brake cleaner.
I'm soaking it with NATO gun oil and now it's weakening and I can peel it off carefully with a small screwdriver....
Took me almost 8 hours, repaired it as shown in the video and now I have a good running chainsaw thanks to you.
That cleaning should have been done by the servicing shop!
@@donyboy73
Thanks to you I am able to do it myself and save money also....
Well that was quite involved but very easy to follow. You have a wonderful ability to teach. Thank you Dony and have a great weekend.
Perfect.... my 026 Arctic has a leak... now I can fix it. Thanks!!
Nice video. Good point on the vent. The gaskets for the caps are cheap from Stihl, and 90 percent of the time, it's all that is needed. The clutch drum on the adjustable oiler version will have a slot for driving a different gear on the pump. Keep up the great work!!!!
Always so professional with every step covered. Great one, Don!
Wow - I admire your perseverance to solve this problem. I am enjoying your videos and learn something every time I watch one.
Great video. Lots to learn here. I have a 30 year old 026 so I'll be saving this video. Thanks!
Thank you Don! I have a MS250 that leaks from the right side, and I am suspecting that vent check valve. Perfect timing! Update: The check valve replacement fixed it. You're a genius Don! Keep posting.
Often the oil line needs replacing
My old Husq' 141 still has a similar nuisance leak even after replacing the pump & line. I've decided to just place paper grocery bags & cardboard under it. Dony, thank you for reminding me of all the troubleshooting I should have done!
Yep was a great vid! I hate oil leaks. They are totally avoidable. I use gas instead of oil to find leaks. It will find the tiniest leaks. And silicone all rubber connections. I’ve had great luck with these tricks. I’ve also used JB weld on a 455. Nothing else worked but that’s held up now for 6yrs. Good luck
thank you Dony. I inherited a 026 and have done a bit of work to get it running but have avoided the leaking oil. no longer. i have learnt a lot from your videos over the years, especially the long format. i appreciate your whole mantra about helping the people who want to be helped and taking money from the ones who would rather pay someone else to do it. thank you for sharing.
A nice repair for a common problem in Chainsaws through many steps you explained it really well😊
This is exactly how all my projects go the 1st time. I end up taking everything apart 10x, but then I know exactly what I'm doing, & I can do it in my sleep now.
Don,
Another good video explanation. Thank you for taking time to film, edit and post this video.
Excellent video! Complete overview of leak repair/parts replacement on a bar oiler mechanism for this model Stihl. Thanks Don!
Awesome Video. I have an o26 still chainsaw.. I appreciate the video
I bought a new Echo that leaked from day one...by leak, I mean leaks like race horse. So disappointed, dealer said they all leak a little. Maybe I will look to see if they assembled the rubber hose properly. Thanks for a good video!
I replaced the oil pickup line without dumping the bar oil in my 026 the other day. Turning the saw on its flywheel side will keep all the oil in the saw. I removed the clutch, sprocket, worm gear and oil pump. I then pulled out the old oil pickup line with a pair of needle nose pliers. Blew the filter out and put it on the new oil line. I pushed it into the hole and then took my 10 mm long nut driver and pushed it down completely into the hole. I put everything together, ranked it up and it oiled, perfectly. I have had no leaks since. I did not replace the discharge line.
Donny Boy fix it videos ae always well explained and recorded in detail. Whenever I need info I look for his direction.
You stated that you are using winter chain oil for your leak test, which I assume is thinner than summer oil.
What is the ambient temperature in your shop? Maybe that is the reason it's seeping thru. I know when I'm out of chain oil, I will use 30 WT. motor oil as a temporary substitute and it will leak like crazy. Good info Donyboy.
I also like the old style cap as well, I've has 2 year old saws that had the flip caps fail.
You can prevent carpal tunnel surgery by not using your palm of your hand to loosen bolts or nuts ! I learned that the hard way! Great job, love your channel! From Nebraska usa🇺🇸
What do you use if you don't use the palm of your hand?
Thanks for the tip Bruce!
@@jamese9283 if you can - use a “ cheater pipe “ over the stem ?
Thanks so much for all the videos, you are a great teacher!!
I have one of those in my collection. It does leak, haven't looked into it but will. Thanks for sharing.
I have an 025 that leaked oil at the cap and the rubber line going into the tank. Replaced the oil line and O ring on the nylon fitting. Then saw that the cap leaked too. Same cap as your 026. I removed the flat gasket and used an Oring. Last I looked it wasn't leaking. I did cut out an oversized flat gasket from an old bicycle tire tube. If the Oring doesn't work out, I'll try the tire tube gasket. Great videos, Dony. Very professional and no BS. Good closeups
Thank you for a very clear and detailed video. It was wonderful se❤eing how much you care and❤ your attention to detail. There should be more folks like you.
I actually had to pause just to agree on those older fuel caps being better. Way over from Australia mate 👍
Great video Donny. My Stihls usually leak sitting around if I leave bar oil in them. I've just got in to the habit of pouring the unused oil back into the container after cutting. That is if I'm through for a few days. Same as fuel, as the alcohol destroys the lines . Thanks again.
the 026 is one verry good saw. I am using it from 30 years, it is stil clean ! and work fine.
Thanks for your video.
Great instructional video! Love to watch your videos! You guide us in a very simple and understanding way! You should be a professor! Keep them coming!
Thank u very much!... I have my trusty old 026 and am about to have some big maintenance done to it. And one of the reasons is the leaking. So I'm gonna make the tech watch your video, and now I have the part numbers. So they can't f-it up...
Love my saw, it was a gift from my manager at an early internship and had it do really good work for over 20 years...
I actually like how they made that valve. It looks to be a good idea.
I'm used to the old Jonsered, and they simply have a small cotter pin. It works really well but it will leak some.
That’s what my Jonsered 49sp uses too

I think your awesome because your the only video to really go into detail on how to fix the leak! Everyone else just says it’s supposed to leak a little from use! Because of this video I will continue to watch your videos!! Thanks for sharing this content with us
Sensational video! Thanks for covering all the steps so thoroughly.
Awesome video and information . I’ve been watching your videos for years and never have I seen you not care about customers chainsaws and never in no hurry to short cuts and that means allot. Thank you Dony👍
A lot of great information. My saw retains pressure unless I rake cap off/on. I’ll check the vent. Thanks and take care.
That little vent valve was a bonus reveal Don. MuTx!
Interesting blowing air on the little valve could be the culprit? Other 2 fixes I was aware of. Another great tip!
Great video. I recently replaced my oil line on my Ms171 and it cured the leak. It was slightly easier to replace than the one you tackled 😉
Good job. Oil leaks are a constant pain.
Do you have a video for a Stihl string trimmer that will idle, but dies when throttling? I’m guessing clogged jet. ??
@@kevinorr6880 it could be the spark arrestor is clogged up with carbon if it is removable take a propane torch and burn the carbon off
@@robertmailhos8159 thank you, sir

Fantastic video for someone learning the trade, i have basically set my whole diagnostic set up and just about everything ive learned from thus channel and the geasy shop rag. Scott also has a fantastic channel and explains things in detail such as you do. Thank you for your help and time brother. Take care
One thing I'll add , as a small engine mechanic , Dony is... if it's a Stihl, Husqvarna or Echo then repair it but let the customer know about the cost. That is not a cheap fix labor wise. If it's any other brand of chainsaw I usually will tell the customer that the labor cost could be well over half the cost of a new lesser expensive chainsaw.
It's just something I tell customers because there are alot of good chainsaws for sale.
Thanks again for the great videos Dony
Yes absolutely, I don't shock my customers with a massive bill! I actually turn away many saws!
@@donyboy73 I do to. First thing I always check on any two stroke, 2 cycle, is the compression.
If it's below 90 then I usually will just say ..buy new
Great job! I need to do the same thing on my old 036. Thanks.
Dad had up to seven Stihl chainsaws in the early seventies and worked part time at a saw shop in Indy in later years. I am a big Stihl fan but not a two cycle user at this time. I have four of the consumer battery devices and the quality, durability and performance of all of them has not dissapointed me.
Keep Kicking!
brilliant vid. so many others take short cuts and leave you wondering sometimes but you were on every small step that makes a good complete job. will keep watching your others for sure.
I also clean the area where the new oil line grommet goes with break cleaner and coat the area with a little 1184 before inserting the new oil line. The 1284 will keep it from leaking around the grommet in the future. A thin coating is all that is needed.
Best video I've found for my 026 chain saw. Keep up with more and ty 😊
Great Instruction Video as always Dony.
Great vid Don. Thanks.
I did the same job on my 20+ year old Husq 371 XP. It's interesting how the two share the same design ideas. Like you, I went with OEM parts. No leaks!
Learned a lot from this one 😊
Oh man, Thanks a lot for the vidéo ! I have this leak from this small air valve, i could not find any vidéo how to fix it, u save my day
So many extra learnings besides the main theme....Rock On!
very educational, thank you
Great content donyboy73...except for replacing the cap, I'll just live with the leak...cleaning up and replacing a tablespoon of bar oil is a whole lot less work and stress.
Don, thank you for making these videos. I'm not afraid of tearing Into my saw to work on it after watching you do it. Besides saving a few bucks, I can get it up and running sooner than a repair shop.
One question though. Will the break cleaner do harm to the tubing or rubber parts? I know it evaporates quickly. Still concerned.
I try and avoid spraying any rubber parts with brake cleaner unless I wipe it off immediately!
I used my 20mm nut driver to push the oil line into the case. I had put a little bar oil on the grommet, pushed it down as far as it would go by hand and then used the nut driver to make sure it was fully seated. You can grab it from the inside with a pair of long hemostats and pull it into position.
Excellent...... I think I'll be doing just the same myself very soon.... My machine leaves a pool wherever I sit it. Not just a leak.
Very thorough video. Thanks!
Great video buddy thanks for sharing very helpful have a great day
grouse work Donny mate love it and cheers from Australia 🐨🐑🦘🌴🌏 to your area in Canada 🍁 and it,s our annual Autumn/Fall season here for sure and yep Chainsaws Leaf Blowers and Hedge Trimmers are in use atm and getting things set for the Wood fire season too etc.
Superinformative video. Thank you Dony!
Outstanding video! Extremely detailed. Thanks for taking the time to show each step and exactly what to do along with all the parts. Great job. Thanks!
Thanks for the awesome video. Can you please tell me if the 024 Stihl model takes the same part numbers that you listed? My dad got a new saw in 2023 and gave me his old one after I was cutting and the brake band locked up. It's a great old saw, and I already have the brake band but want to order the oil parts so I can fix it all at once.
Thank you Donny ! My MS 310 is leaking from that valve ( I think ). Will give it a try tomorrow ! Thanks again, Alex
Good video, Dony! Although other chainsaws may use different oiler setups, the basic system is similar across most makes and models, so this would be a pretty good video as a reference tool - at least for learning what to check when your saw is leaking.
Thanks so much for such a thorough, detailed video. My MS290 is leaking . . .actually, it's leaking more since I got a new Stihl oil cap. Now I know some other things that could be part of the problem. Nice job!
The oil pump and line in those machines are a bear to replace smart to preserve it. Thanks so much for the detail I’ll try the puffs of air first in my old 034.
It worked!
Silicone around the new line and where it attaches to the pump will help immensely👍
Thanks!
wow thanks!
Awesome video (as always) Dony! Your tutorials are the best of the best!
