Great question! I had always thought of GrimDark being a narrative device, as a way of creating a setting that is grim and oppressive so that games have some verisimilitude on the table. It creates the bridge between the exaggerated art style and the world building of the setting. It explains why people live in this way, how and why servitors exist, why technology is not as advanced as you would expect 28,000 to 38,000 years in the future. Basically how and why the whole galaxy looks like heavy metal album cover art. I think in painting and modelling GrimDark is generally something that is exaggerated in ways that tell a story (skulls, purity seals, candles, iconography, etc) but then muted colours to make it look like it belongs in a horror film. Lots of brown washes. I use a bit of Khorne red in with the blood red and a bit of bone in with the white when painting my Dark Angels (30K and 40K) to make them look a bit more GrimDark, rather than using only the brighter colours. I feel that pulls them back towards that classic art style.
Always great to catch your shows, guys, and this was a great one, as always! Agree on the Sovereigns. I think Leviathans are okay as it's a steep cost to put them in pods, and if they're not, they're painfully slow. Also, assuming typical Chinese pronunciation, "Qin Xa" would be pronounced "Chin Shah"... I'm not sure if that's the intended way to say it, but it's how I do!
I actually really enjoy the Heresy Thursdays with Heraldries/Painting schemes. They even put little blurbs of fluff about the factions depicted. It builds the world further and is better than just a ''here is a new toy available for sale''.
GW welcomes everyone to the return of Heresy Thursday!!! Tune in every fourteenth Thursday for our next Imperial Fists release!!!!
If we're lucky we might get a sons of Horus consul!
We're excited to announce the pre-order for Chadus Fistion, VII Legion Praetor with Solarite Power Guantlet and Expression of Superiority.
Loving seeing Chris's list being shared! I face him quite regularly and he uses them very well. Top bloke as well.
Cheers for the shoutout lads. (Bringing the Falcion along on Saturday 🎉)

Thanks for reviewing my scars list. I'm only based in Bournemouth so can travel for a game
For the spindly dark mech legions stuff, in the designers interview it was stated that those will NOT be released for the foreseeable future😢
The new Whatsapp community is great. Still have to catch up on 5.235 unread messages though.... 🙃
Best fetch yourself a huge coffee..
Time spent sitting on the shitter has increased exponentially
Blanchitsu and Grim Dark are separate to me. Blanchitsu is a palette, Grim Dark is a setting and atmosphere.

The problem with that is that is info that could be in the books, instead of articles that may not be available years from now
