If no one buys the first year, there won't be a second. Early adopters help drive innovation and help companies develop even better products, essentially becoming part of the design process. I have no issue buying a first year motorcycle or other product if it appeals to me. Sure, there will be some growing pains, but that's all part of the experience. Good video Colin, sounds like you're enjoying that bike!
So I bought my Pan-Am Special in July, I think I got 7,800 (about) miles on it already, For the first few months it had that starter whine, and some other small electrical issues, but they all seem to have cleared up when it was serviced for 5K miles and got the firmware upgrade, and the onboard clock works. I have had no ride ending mechanical issues. New bike, yes bugs getting worked out, but mechanically sound. I love this bike, I'm so happy that I got it when I did. I love it when stopped in traffic the guy next to me is looking at the bike and asks " IS THAT A HARLEY" everyone has said nice bike. I'll keep my bike.
@@aurictus I now have over 13,000 miles on my PA, and yes I have rode it in rain, yesterday from Gettysburg to Frederick in thunder showers, bike was flawless.
I have a 2021 and am very happy with it. I just rode mine from Southern California to Deadhorse, Alaska (9000 miles). I also did an "Iron Butt" ride (1012 Miles in 18 hours)\. It goes in this week for the 15,000 mile service. I wasn't aware of the clock problem, but noticed mine changed a few times during my trip. I laughed when you mentioned it. The issues are so minor, that they aren't really performance issues. Anyway, keep riding, it is a great bike.
You better inform yourself more. The list if problems are rediculous. Making excuses that it is a first year bike? These things are garbage. Enjoy the resale when you have to unload these lemons.
My only regret with the Pan Am is that I didn't know the accessories would take so long to get. If I had known, I would've waited until 2022 to get one. I looked like Jed Clampet with my top case and two dry bags tied down on the back riding to AZ and back. As for the first year model, if it's a lemon, I'll just trade it in for a new Pan Am. That being said, I wear a big smile every time I ride it. Great bike.
Jed Clampet...nice Most of my accessories have come in with exception of the fog lamps. Most time I've waited several months for parts, but they finally came in. Damn supply issues. Control what we can control.
I bought a 2017 Milwaukee 8 also. I sold it after the warranty ran out. Keep hearing about the oil sumping problems. I bought it used so i did not lose any $$. Happy New Year.
I bought it and I LOVE it. Part of the reason I bought it was due to my comfort level with the H-D dealer network and to a higher degree, my comfort level with my local dealership. I’ve had a couple issues, but my dealership took care of them REALLY quickly. I’m 5K in with some longer trips including one to Sturgis. The PAM provides a great riding experience and it has exceeded my expectations.
Absolutely agree with all that was said..wonderful video. I have only 1500 miles on mine but no major issues at all. Best bike I have ever rode/owned. Every time I’m on it I have fun.
Great honest feedback, I didnt buy 1st because it wasnt released yet and I could not help but scratch my itch so I went from HD roadglide to Triumph Tiger 900 RP. It's an awesome bike but I have been blown away by my recent test rides of the PA. I think I will be getting 2nd year release, hope they tweaked a few of these issues as they havent released any details yet. Appreciate your content, ride safe.
The Tiger is a nice ride. Friend of mine has that and really enjoys it. I've never rode one though. This is my first ADV bike, and I should have gotten one much sooner. Good timing I guess when H-D came out with one.
When the first Milwalkie 8 came out they had bad oil pumps so you are right but Harley corrected the issues and now we are all happy. I hope you bring the Pan America to VAMM this summer and also ride it on vacation. It would be amazing videos of you proving that you can tour with the Pan America. Great video and good thoughts thanks for sharing Ride Safe
Very good explanations of the problems that are showing up on this bike. I am gun shy buying the first year of anything but I have actually in the past. I got burnt with a Ford first year with the Dual Clutch Transmission. I traded in back to them at 30K before the warranty ran out and I was stuck buying a trans. Thanks for sharing all this with us. Happy New Year. Be safe, have fun.
I bought the first-year Harley-Davidson SportsterS, with the same platform as the Pan America. Yes, I too was an early adopter with the tech and the Revolution Max 1252cc 60 V twin. I had many of the same issues (clock, time, 1250 whine, starting, etc). This is NORMAL for a couple of reasons: 1) to bring the product to market in a reasonable time, often the product is puched out the door expecting the bugs will be worked out in the warranty period rather than using production time and dollars (all companies do this), and 2) getting feedback from the purchasing community is necessary often in order to address issues that missed the the R & D or quality control folks. If you don't want to be a part of the R&D feedback process, then don't be an early adopter ! All of the issues on my SportsterS have been corrected; took some time. The same issues have been corrected on the Pan Amnerica as well. I traded my SportsterS (2021) in on a new Pan America (2023). All of the issues from the 21 and 22 have been corrected; seriously, all issues have been corrected. My Pan America is a dream machine. It has NO issues whatever; they listened to their early adopters and they fixed the problems. So yeah, I struggled for a time working the bugs out of my 2021 SportsterS; but its gold now. The guy that just bought it is happy as a clam... its running well, has no issues, and he didn't have to go through the early adopter process. So, it really boils down to understanding what you're doing. If you buy a first year bike, expect to go through the early adopter process... this is normal. If you can't handle that emotionally or for some other reason, don't be an early adopter. marcus
I bought my 2017 Ultra Limited as a first year M8 model and have no regrets at all, In fact I'm glad I did since I've had absolutely zero issues. The one recall for fluid transfer was taken care of and I've had one Boom Box flash but never had any problem with either of them. I got the custom two tone blue color with pinstripe accents on the fairing, bag lids and trunk lid. I haven't seen a color since that would entice me to trade it. It's had a stage one upgrade with Cary Faas Racing mufflers that I love, adjustable Kuryakyn highway pegs with heel rests and and the remote rider backrest with the slip on organizer. I actually believe this one will be with me to the end. (I road my last new bike for twelve years.) I have extensively test rode the Pan Am Special and I'm quite intrigued with it. I did sit this first model year out because it's so different in every way and like you, I follow all the social media pages and read about everyone's experiences. I've seen the Fastback Blue color for it leaked out a few months ago and hope that comes out as an option for the Special. Maybe it's a good thing I waited this time so I can add another two tone blue Harley to my stable this year and have a matching pair.
Indeed, I only had a handful of small recalls on the SGS and that bike will be with me for a while. That blue for 2022 isn’t bad, just wish it was a little darker blue. Maybe we will be surprised when they release them soon and have the small fixes addressed.
I purchased the first year Nightster and yes it had its issues-no start problem and defective handlebar. The online forums helped a lot to diagnose the problems as only one tech knew anything about this bike. I also had to placed numerous calls to Harley Davidson customer service to get help. Now that the bugs are fixed, I love the bike. I purchased a first year bike knowing of potential problems, but the great deal that I got is saving me $175 a month and I got a new bike.
The PA has had many fixes over the last 6 months and most issues have been fixed. The starter clutch upgrade fixed many issues. Buggy for sure, but now it seems to be running just fine.
I haven’t bought a new model motorcycle but I’ve heard year 3 is a good way to go. Congratulations on your new Pan Am and you look like you’re really enjoying it. 👍
Just watching now as I am having a few electronic issues with my 1 year old PA. But, when I ride it (have owned at least one of most brands - 2 Triumphs, all of big 4, BMW, KTM, 3 Buells -which were awesome bikes-, or had friends who have, so lots of experience) I get the smile and reminder that it's worth a few problems. And, I think mine stem from dealer. Was perfect until 1st software update at 1700 miles, added attempts just caused more problems and they said nothing we can do. Talked to other guys who said dealer was helpful and got tech assistance from HD to fix. It's far from right now, unrideable, always warning lights on, sometimes throttle sticks at 2800 or 4000 rpm, lots of codes, and for fun, it's all intermittent. But another dealer said bring it in, we'll try to sort out.
Hope you get it sorted. I’ve had some codes. I just clear them and all good. I agree on the dealers. You have to find one that knows what they are doing. Seems it is hit and miss with this.
Yes I would buy a 1st year bike. I got a Pan America Special.and am approaching 2000 miles since September. Put the A1 Risers, Madstad windshield and Tall Boy seat on it. No problems as of yet and am awaiting the repairs on the safety recall you mention. I agree with all your observations on this bike. I have three other HDs and enjoy them all. But this bike is remarkable and I never fail to grin repeatedly as I ride it. Heck just pushing it around the garage is fun; weighs nearly 400 pounds less than my Road Glide. Things to improve is the seat: still not comfortable on rides over 250 to 300 miles. Need something with less slope towards the tank and a little wider under the butt. And highway pegs: eyeing Adventure Pegs there.
I was looking at that seat. The stock actually isn't bad, but I haven't had a chance to check out the Tall Boy. A1 risers are awesome. Those really made a huge difference with the ride.
I think I’d buy a first year bike…I’ve bought first year cars and regretted it, but manufacturers now have far greater resources and testing to find and fix issues. H-D’s venture into ADV bikes is a huge change from their norm, yes…but I doubt it’s a huge issue. Have a Happy and Safe New Year!
Happy New Year too. I know they did some QC on these bikes, but some issues have still come up. The hose seems like a big miss, but at least they are fixing it.
Colin From my viewpoint I been told that Harley-Davidson when they come out with something new they go through hours and hours of testing before they sell them. My 2017 Road Glide Ultra first year for 107 I have 36,000. have had no issues at all.
I would think first year bikes will have something. That said, it’s a great bike and your ride really made me want to ride one. Good video my friend and HNY
If I want it enough, I'll buy first year. My 2019 RAM 1500 was the first year for the eTorque, new body, all the goodies... and it's been rock solid. My first-year 2015 F-150 was put together by an intern. Same with my 2009 Lincoln MKS. My 2nd year Maxima [2010] was the same way. 2000 Focus? Great car. 2004 Mustang [5 years into the model run] was faulty too. 2011 F-150 with EcoBoost was great, until the warranty ran out, and then all the electronics started going bad. I'll take my chances and use the warranty. It runs out, and so does my patience LOL.
I bought the first year special model last year, and it's my first ADV bike. I've loved it so far. I recently did a trip from Dallas > Denver and back, and had an issue with the battery about 75 miles from home and nearly got stranded. I wasn't aware of the recalls at the time, so I'm taking it in next week for the recall. Still, I love this bike.
I always seem to wait a few years.... not only because the new tech needs to be worked out, but because i don't have the money to jump into a debt so easy. 🤷♂️
great updates. all fair points growing pains it all comes down to your perspective ride on Bronco ! first year model ? never have, but can't say i'm opposed to it either .....
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and challenges with the bike. It seems most new model vehicles in general have some issues that need to be ironed out. Ride safe and Happy New Year. 👍👊🇺🇸
Not sure if or when I will ride one but am glad the Pan American seems to be a success for Harley Davidson. If I wanted to get a new first year model I probably wouldn’t let that stop me. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year Jim. Yes, this bike has done well for H-D. I'm glad to see it, so I understand there will be people focusing on the issues more, than how awesome it is. Totally respect that though.
Can you give me a listing of the forums you use! Thanks man, great post! I love mine, thanks for letting me know about the hose, that would have sucked.
Under facebook, the main ones I’m on are Harley Davidson Pan America Adventure Touring and Harley Davidson Pan America USA. There are others but these are the bigger ones.
I traded my 17 RK in for a new PAS in mid October and put 2k miles on it in 3 weeks before it went into winter storage. No regrets and full speed ahead come April if the weather cooperates. Ask again mid summer and I should have 10k miles.
I guess I tend to wait and see. BUT, men are impulse buyers. Great to see you out and I hope you had a great Christmas and Here's to a great New Year. Be well and safe my friend.
Life’s short, buy the bike! In 2018 I purchased a first year 2018 Goldwing DCT Tour Airbag with a load of tech that wasn’t available on the prior generations. Sometimes you have to ignore all the noise and do what you feel and want. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the manufacturers offers a three year warranty 😂 . All joking aside no issues that weren’t addressed without issue to date. Great video👍🏾
All new bikes have their quirks and issues. As solid as my T7 is, Yamaha made a few design flaws on it (like the pipe hanger) - The cool thing is that once the bike is into like its 3rd year on the market, a ton of companies will start to make fixes and kits for the known issues (like there are 3 companies that now make a high mount pipe kit for the T7). I guarantee in another 6 months there will be insulation kits out for the water hose on the Pan Am.
A lot of the issues you mentioned are fixable throughout the first year. Even the issue with the hose and the backrail. So no major things imo. And about the software: Harley should fix software issues by updates through the app, same way Tesla does, so you can do it yourself by connecting with your phone. And of course making improvements and new items accessible as well. Those services draw customers...
I generally like to wait a year or so with new tech/design models!...when the M8 first came out...we were looking to get a new bike...and glad I did!....there was some issues with the oil pump and sumping!...that being said....not all new tech/designs have issues!...just ones personal opinion on when to buy new products!...great video...stay safe...ride safe!😎🤙👍🤙👍🇨🇦
The ADV moment I had went away... It'll be a least another year before I consider a new bike again. That said, when it comes down to it, I'd probably shy away from a 1st year model.
I bought the first one in Tennessee. I’ve had a couple of minor issues. Nothing major unless you consider the dragging starter issue major(supposed to be fixed now). I do not like the engine noise. Both the VVT and the resonance are annoying as hell. I’m hoping a tune and an exhaust change will remedy that issue. I hate the stock seat and am uncomfortable after an hour or so in the saddle. Love the power, handling, braking, performance and the tech. I’ll keep it a few more months and see if I can make it the way I want it. It may be a keeper. Not sure yet.
The seat isn’t bad for me. Usually, that’s always a complaint on a bike, but maybe it’s the upright seating position. Agree on the sound. I love this ride though.
Hey Colin, buying a first-year bike to me is not an issue as long as they fix the problems in a timely manner as they have with you. Enjoy the ride, Cheers Dave
Well. I have two first-year models, the Daytona and the Yamaha (which my brother likes to tell me was called "one of the worst bikes of the 70's", though he's never told me who said that, nor do I particularly care). No real issues with the Daytona, though when you mentioned the warranty it reminded me I did actually have the cases replaced under warranty when they started to leak oil, nearly forgot about that (it was over 20 years ago now). Issues with the Yamaha were definite design flaws, which were fixed in later models (and which I incorporated into mine when rebuilding it, it was cheaper than buying a new bike). That bike has 124,000 miles on it, and made it across the country both ways with no real trouble. Your issues do seem pretty minor, except for that hose issue, that really should have been caught early!
I think you told me before when we rode together about your rebuilding it the right way on the Yamaha. End of the day, they are minor. The hose is a miss, but it's getting fixed, so all good.
First year models are always interesting. When I got my 2018 Goldwing wondered if I would have problems, luckily not a single recall. To Hondas credit they did make upgrade to 2020 model. I’m sure HD will continue to have teething issues, I bet in 2 years it will have all those minor and major issues fixed.
I bought 1st yr heritage when they came out with the new frame and for the most part no regrets. They had one recall of the rocker box leaking which mine did but it was covered under warranty. They haven't made any real changes other than colors and tank badging over the last few yrs and I like mine better so its a win for me.
I do advise people to not but a first year model, but someone has to buy one. As for the firmware update, I would argue that they're all QC issues. Harley just hasn't integrated a while lot of IT guys into bike production/design yet. I'm looking forward to seeing this engine and the Arrow drivetrain in more platforms.
I have to be honest, I do have a rule that I will not buy the first year bike, car or whatever. However, I broke my rule. I ended up purchasing the Pan America Special in October. When I went in to pick up the bike they had rolled the bike out for its test ride. The tech had taken it around the parking lot when I had gone inside to sign the papers. After signing all of the papers, I came out to ride the bike home and they took me into the shop and showed me the bike on the lift. Beneath the bike was a puddle of oil and the skid plate was removed. When I asked what's going on, they had said that they were preparing to take the bike out on the road for the road test and when they parked it in the parking lot, the tech had noticed a very large puddle of oil under the bike. They were on the phone with Harley to troubleshoot the issue. I ended up getting a ride home and later that day the dealer called and said the bike was ready. When I returned to the dealer and asked what the issue was, they had mentioned that it was a hex plug on the motor that was loose and that's where the oil was spewing from. They tightened up that hex plug and I rode the bike home and have been riding it since. I have over 1000 miles on it. I'm waiting on that handhold recall kit to come in and I was going to bring it in for my first service as well as the recall. I will say that the bike has been flawless from the first day I actually rode it home. With regard to the time, when you mentioned that, I went into my garage and checked the time and it was only two minutes off. When I had picked up the bike in October, they had flashed upgraded the firmware so I think a lot of the things that people have been complaining about were certainly taken care of in the firmware upgrades. I also checked my radiator hose and my radiator hose is inches away from the header pipe so I don't have that issue that you have. So corporate went ahead and made sure the radiator hose was not going to be rubbed but they forgot to tighten up the hex plug lol. The only thing that I dislike is having to wait for all of the accessories I had ordered for the bike. They are coming in slowly but surely however, I still have two accessory's that are yet to come in. I will say that this is becoming my favorite bike and I have a few. One of the biggest reasons is because it's 300 pounds lighter than my other bikes.
That hex plug would have worried me, but I’m glad they got it fixed. Odd, how your hose is a couple inches away. Mine seems about a 1/2 inch away. No kidding on the accessories but hard to control that. I’m still waiting on my fog lights, otherwise everything has come in. Thanks for the great comment.
I had electrical issues where it wouldnt start. Once i was on a trail in backwoods. It wouldnt start really sucked seeing as i only had it 3 days. I did get it started after like an hour . Took it directly to dealer . Havent had an issue again. I did get notice of a recall for brakes. Will probably take it in feb or mar. I have only had a fatboy before this. But so far id say this bike is more comfortable long distances and more fun. Id definatly buy again.no regrets. Will probably look at coolant lines now. Ive had issues with the clock but didnt really care cause i had a phone.
Haven’t seen anything about the brake recall. I’ll check that out. The starter issue should get fixed with the firmware fix. I had it happen to me, but nothing since after they did firmware. The clock is working too, but that never bothered me either.
Got good news today panniers/with brackets ,top box, foot pegs and gear lever are finally in and will be installed on the 10th 😎👍😀😀😀 Next question is I have 3000 miles on these tires in may going on a 3000 mile road trip … how many mile should I be able to get on tire s?🤔
Electrical glitches normal. Pipe routing definitely poor final quality control. Nothing major. See you are loving it. Are you thinking of the 2022 BMW1250GSA?? LOL
I totally agree as this is the best bike I’ve ever had and I went from several Adventure bikes as the Yamaha Tenerè or the Honda Africa Twin. I then went to a Triumph Bonneville T120 that I still have. The Pan America covers the features of all these bikes in one model. I also have people telling me I was crazy to get a first year model and even more cos it was a whole new project from a company that always did a different kind of bike. But I could not be more satisfied about the choice I made. And yes I also had issues as you describe and also I now need to change the fuel pump that is making a weird noise. But…I’d go back and rebuy it, no doubts.
Tire was awful to change, codes constantly, and the dealerships don't have a clue lol. Heat shield fall off around 5k. C port will melt if it gets wet. Kick stand bolt will snap. Passenger grip snapped off. Up to 13 codes at a time. Took 4 hrs to check back tire, extra lip on the wheel to be tubeless is a pain to get over.
I have bought a few first year bikes, and I have had no regrets. If it is what I want then I just go for it. However a brand new line first time introduction model, ummm not so much, not sure I would, I think that would make me wait.
6000 miles on mine. Already issues with ECU, some O2 sensor and suspension. I´ve had it for 4.5 months of which has been taken at the dealers 5 times and a total of 1.5 months for the harley people to try to figure out whats going on.
That sucks man. It is a buggy bike for sure. Besides the recalls and radiator hose, it’s been an awesome bike. Hope you get yours worked out. Glad I got the warranty.
I absolutely regret buying my 2021 PAS😡 Left me stranded several times. Electrical was unbelievable and around 20,000 fuel pump went out. Dealer swapped it out for a 2022 and it’s been better even though the fuel pump went out around 20,000 like the 21 did. The Start Clutch Update fixed 90% of the issues with the 21.
Hi Colin Mine is going in the in January to be checked under warranty as I have noticed putting on the rear brake disc and the spokes on the wheels especially the back one have a mottled finish now despite being washed with HD recommended items and having only covered 1400 miles here in the UK. Is this a deal breaker no it’s just sub con parts that have not been checked by the suppliers. HD will iron this out and yes my click is wrong also if the app isn’t on 😂 but I don’t care 🤷🏻♂️ PS my Sportster 1200C had spoked wheels rode all year round for 2.5 years still looked like new!
Haven't heard about any brake issues, but like you said, sub parts from the suppliers. I'm like you with the clock. It is something very minor, and I didn't want to have to use the app every time, but they did say it is fixed now. Had it back for about a week, and the time is staying correct.
I would buy a first year model IF: 1. I knew the dealer well and trusted them. 2. I lived close to the dealer. 3. The brand had a good warranty program. My Fastback Blue 2022 PAS should arrive next week. Those rules still work on a second model year buy.
Have a Street Glide Special and a Softail Fat Bob both 114. I’m seriously considering the Pan America and if it’s as fun on the road as you (and others) suggest it is, it may replace them both.
I would ask dealer for a longer demo ride. It’s a little hard to get used to the ride in 5 miles. It’s completely different from the SGS. Once you get used to the higher revs, oh man…..
Well the weather is dropping below 30 degrees. Time to breakout the Johnson’s Baby Shampoo and clean the gear so I don’t have to worry about it in the spring.
@@Broncoride I hear you. I just cleaned the pads in my lid. I’m going to start on the shell and rest of the gear tomorrow. I misplaced my leather cleaner…
Being 60 years old the luxury of waiting a few years for a bike I want doesn't make sense. I'll run my 2021 a few years, then maybe get the 2023/2024 model. As of right now this bike tics all the boxes in what I want in a motorcycle, with minimal problems @ 4,000 miles. One of the problems is face pain from grining like a fool while riding.
Yeah I would buy a first year bike. Hell 2nd year bike have problems too. Most people that didn't get the first year of the next gen Gold Wing because they were concerned about kinks in the bike. The Pan America is Harley's first attempt at that "type" of bike. The only reason I didn't get the 2018 Wing is because I not in the market for a bike yet. Hell, if I would get a 2nd bike...Trust me it would be the Pan America, and its all your fault lol.
I generally avoid first year models (apart from Apple products) but I went ahead and bought a very early '21 Pan Am. Firstly because the engine/architecture is so important to Harley they have to support it and second my dealership is superb. I did take the precaution of buying the extended warranty though... Love the bike, I haven't had any serious issues, just the heat shield bracket breaking, but that's pretty trivial. QC-wise how did they not find the heat shield problem, grab rail problem, quick shift not on '21? That's pretty basic engineering/production testing. Plus there seems to have been a batch of bad batteries, cam tensioners/cam issues, oh and fuel pumps. Not so impressive, but thankfully seems to only affect a small(ish) number of bikes. The US made bikes dont seem as well put together as the Thai made ones, which is sad...
I agree that certain bikes didn’t meet QC and it’s disappointing for sure. I bought the warranty too because of the unknown engine. I haven’t had the heat shield bracket fail on me, but I’ll probably add a couple clamps to be safe.
It is a beautiful bike. I've got a test ride coming up. I own a first year BMW R1250GSA that I love more than any bike I've ever had. It'll be interesting to rid this one. Not sure about the very high compression and little things like the weak grab handles but I'm interested.
Just before I sold my PAS I had all the updates done, and it did not fix the clock SW issue. The sidestand is way too far forward. I have no idea why they thought that was a great idea. The layout of the controls on the hand controls especially on the right side are not really laid out well, the mode (probably the most important to get to) is hard to get to. The screen layout with widgets is pitiful, very hard to read. The seat is never fully 'locked' into place and has play. Not bad mind you, but in the high position it always moves a bit (with both stock and sundowner seats). On my $5K Royal Enfield Himalayan I can overlook things, you kind of expect it at that price, but not at well over $22K. I went back to a GSA and have zero regrets. It was a great six month experiment, and the HD loyalist love the bike, but I think the key to this bike is not selling to the HD crowd, but selling to those outside that normal circle. That's where they may struggle in the coming years.
Hi Wayne, !'ve bought, after driving several HD tourings , a brand new GS1250R in the beginning of 2021 but i going to sell it because it's a piece of cold "German" machinery, there 's no "soul" in a GS. BMW have also some minor problems with but they don't (want ?) fix it. ( awfull connectivity with TFT/headset connectivity / no working handcontrols ). Also the price here in Europe is now +/- 25.000€ if you want the same options like the PA. So i think a PA will be a better buy for to the money. Probably is a GS the best bike in the world ( it's the 40th anniversary of the GS, so it's normal that the bike is getting perfect ) but a Harley Davidson is like a girlfriend. Maybe she isn't a topmodel but if she got it "all, ", you love her...😉 So i trade my GS in for a Pan America this year !
From my perspective there are too simply too many identified design flaws or short-comings that make me forgo thinking about buying the HD PA. Heat from engine, voltage regulator and battery vulnerability just behind front wheel where the road dirt, water, rocks, or mud flies. Similar vulnerability for radiator that should come standard with protective guard or better fender. Side stand positioning and being bolted to aluminum engine case cover with three smallish bolts. Flimsy plastic grab handles (on a $20K+ bike). The small text on the screen that is not legible for older eyes. No quick shifter. Inadequate headlight illumination and goofy look of that rectangular headlight and shroud that I find looks like mouth of a whale shark. Absurd coil pack with exposed plug wires on left side of bike. Most of all yet unproven reliabilty on very expensive bike. I'm leaning towards new Tiger 1200 or Africa Twin. I think both offer more value for the dollar with a more proven track record of reliability.
Hey somebody has to buy the first year models! I have over 11,000 miles on mine. I had a alert light the triangle light coming on mine. It happened after my 1,000 mile service. They could not figure it out. I finally went to the IMS show in Fort Worth and saw the Harley factory people at the show they ran the code and figured it out. Come to find out I had a wire to my rear shock that controlled the adaptive ride height and it had gotten against the exhaust and melted it. I really think they busted a zip tie to the wires on the 1,000 mile service. They fixed it but Harley Davidson is going to put a new shock on it. Still waiting on that part!? But other than that I absolutely love this bike! Ride Safe!
I have a 2022 Pan America S and I can tell you that I more than regret buying the bike, it has been a nightmare. There is not a week that I don't have to go to the dealership, I have electronic issues, motor issues even my gear selector fell off from the bike.
Bro the PaN Am sold out its first year!......of course people buy the first year! I had mine a month after it was released. Had a couple minor things, but the fun factor of this bike outweighs any issue 10 fold.
I bought a 2017 Ultra Classic, 1st year M8. I also bought a 2021 Pan America Special 1st year. My non adjustable ride height Special will sometimes lower. At 5'8"... I just wish it did it ll the time. lol I don't regret either bikes. Are there issues, sure, nothing to make me regret them. Sales is the name of the game.
It’s a nice feature but I really don’t need it with my height. I’ve seen several people that don’t have it and under 6’ and they are good. I keep mine off when off-road.
@@Broncoride I make do but it is much easier to get on or off the bike when it’s lower and when I fatigued it would be nice when I have to stop. I’m thinking that all they would have to do is some kind of programming to get mine to adjust. It was strange how Harley did the first batch of bikes. Two bikes per dealer, both specials, one with ARH, one without. Unfortunately I was third on the list. Fortunately the second guy turned it down. lol
Did you test ride pan-Am special 2022? I won't to see 2023 model. Were you afraid to ride it? I'll be afraid to drive it. I have a Yamaha YZF R3 2015. I was little bet afraid. I went on a demo ride I was driven it. Taking my time nice and slow get the feel of it. I get to do lot more practicing on it before I get a bigger bike.
Not afraid at all. 22 models are same with exception of optional quick shifter. The other differences have been fixed with firmware updates. It doesn’t feel like a mid 500lb bike at all. I’m also coming from a much heavier ride, so the difference in weight really stood out for me.
I own 3 tourings (2 cvo) and since I got the PA1250S with Side and top cases, Riser and Full Led, so I have to say that it has become my Favorite one, Love to ride it and never had an ADV Bike before but this one is the real deal Guys... it rides fast, hard and it`s so damm funny, actually Im going Daytona Riding her all the way from Durango Mex (6-7 K mile ride) and I can´t wait to leave.
Of course I'd buy a first year bike if I wanted one. Would I buy a 2017 M8? Yes. Would I buy a 1999 Twin Cam? Yes. The 2021 Pan America has been a success. It's a great bike with a great motor. I want one.. I'm just too cheap to make the leap. That's not the bike's fault. ha ha
Love mine but new motor with 40 miles on the odometer wasn't the most confident start... New motor only took two weeks to ship and install though. Other then codes every ride its a great bike.
Got 9300 fairly trouble free miles until armageddon happened. All electrical. Starting issues, now screen isn't working, dying while riding it. It just stops while on the freeway! Since August I have not trusted the bike and bought another while hopefully these issues get fixed or I sue HD for Lemon Law. Sad as this HD was the best Harley I have owned since getting back into riding since 2009.
Damn Manny, you fall into that category of the ones that have nothing but problems. I hope you get it squared away with the lemon law. I’ve been good with mine, but I would be livid if I had your issues.
I'm still waiting for my local dealer to get and keep one for more than a day. Seriously, they are selling so fast that I can't get one. It's fine. I'll just wait. I have a kTm 790 adventure, but as soon as my dealer gets a pan america, I will be trading in my kTm.
I agree with pretty much everything you said, and yes I had two Ultra Limited's prior to switching to the Pan America Special, and the reason I had two in a relatively short space of time was that I wanted the M* power unit. There are times when I look at some of the design features of my PAS like wires everywhere and sensors for literally everything, the battery slung down where it can't help but get wet, and for a split second I do question if I should have waited for the next iteration, but as soon as I climb on and start rolling, I forget any doubt that may have creed into my thoughts.
I’d buy a first year model, provided they either replaced the bike if it was plagued with issues that they couldn’t resolve, or give me a full refund and I walk away.My choice.
Do I regret it no I guess not since I Recently bought a second one for my wife. We love riding the bikes yes I am a little disappointed in Harley Davidson Quality and support with their dealerships yes I did have problems with one dealership not not knowing at all how to work on the bike I've also had both bikes updated Flash still Both bikes clocks will not work correctly and it's amazing when you go into a Harley Davidson dealership after almost a year you still can't find a pan america T-shirt let alone parts and accessories Do I love the bike yes disappointed and Harley yes
Not sure I follow why someone would buy an inferior product attempting to copy a true and tried product already on the shelf? And to the point that the consumer has to do the R&D at their expense? I have a Harley Davidson that I wouldn’t trade for what it does… a pavement burning wide glide, however, I would not expect to purchase a serious adventure bike from Milwaukee, like I would not expect to buy a serious cruiser from Berlin. Go figure
I’m all about companies evolving and not staying complacent. Wether it’s a success or bust, they are innovating. Imagine if Steve Jobs said, the Walkman is already around, so I won’t pursue the Ipod.
The base model doesn't have a locking gas cap. Only the U.S. version did they do this on.You have to buy one from Harley for 112.00 bucks and assemble and install the lock yourself. Unbelievable,no other manufacturer is this cheap and stupid. By the way, if you get the Harley sport cases you have to assemble and install the locks on those too. Major pain in the ass. Also the base model doesn't have the ability to install heated grips. Even my old Suzuki v-strom had a factory option to put them on yourself. The early models have a starter gear design problem that needs replacement also. I'm waiting on the parts now. So far,3,000 miles, the rest of the bike is good. Motor, handling, etc. Time will tell.
I don’t have a locking gas cap on the special. I don’t believe they are on the 22’s either. Agree with you on the sport cases. I ended up doing soft Mosko bags as my main ones and they are great.
My 2022 Pan America has only 2100 miles and it lives at the dealer! Everytime I get it back it barely makes it 200 miles before it has problems, no starts, suspension glitches, most recently it stalled in a second gear downshift and locked up the rear tire in a curve, such a mediocre pile of crap at a premium price, I 100% regret buying this pos, good luck getting rid of it, it has depreciated like a stone! 6months old and 2100 miles, all HD accessories and its worth 1/3 of what I paid (msrp) be warned!
Well put my friend. Yes, I really am enjoying.
I own a first year.
Randi, it's funny how I get asked that a lot. Hear, no way is that a Harley. I just tell them it doesn't sound like one, but it definitely is.
Did you ride it in rain 🌧? You will see additional issues!
@@aurictus I now have over 13,000 miles on my PA, and yes I have rode it in rain, yesterday from Gettysburg to Frederick in thunder showers, bike was flawless.
@@randiwallace4895 Lucky you! My bike has big issues and I don't ride it anymore. Actually I sold it. Maybe model 2023 or 2024 again...
Yes, rode in rain many times and no issues.
Great job on those accomplishments. I truly enjoy this bike. Most issues can easily be fixed.
You better inform yourself more. The list if problems are rediculous. Making excuses that it is a first year bike? These things are garbage. Enjoy the resale when you have to unload these lemons.
Just did 2000 miles on it. Rode great.
Well Said Collin, I have no regrets. Looking forward to riding the Smokies this summer on mine.
Cool, I'm heading there too this summer. Maybe we will cross paths.
I bought a 2017 Milwaukee 8 also. I sold it after the warranty ran out. Keep hearing about the oil sumping problems. I bought it used so i did not lose any $$. Happy New Year.
Thought they had a recall for that or they fixed mine when they did a service. Think it was around 5-10% of the bikes had that issue.
Plan to get the Pan Am in 3 months’ time. Your video helped me to anticipate pontential problems. Thanks a lot, mate.
No worries mate
I bought it and I LOVE it. Part of the reason I bought it was due to my comfort level with the H-D dealer network and to a higher degree, my comfort level with my local dealership. I’ve had a couple issues, but my dealership took care of them REALLY quickly. I’m 5K in with some longer trips including one to Sturgis. The PAM provides a great riding experience and it has exceeded my expectations.
That’s awesome. I’m happy with my dealership too. They are addressing quickly and it’s a learning curve for them too.
Absolutely agree with all that was said..wonderful video. I have only 1500 miles on mine but no major issues at all. Best bike I have ever rode/owned. Every time I’m on it I have fun.
Paul, this bike is a blast. I'm always smiling when I ride it.
Actually thought about riding it to VAMM and Tennessee. I might make you guys go down some gravel roads with me.
@@Broncoride We will ride to the other side on the blacktop and meet you. Can't wait to see the bike in person.
Happy New Year my friend. These aren't huge issues, but there are some. I have a warranty, so if stuff happens, at least I'm covered for a bit.
Absolutely would. I purchased the new Ford Bronco and love it. And would love to have that Pan Am back in my garage again soon. 🙌
You need the PA back in your garage!
If you can't handle that emotionally or for some other reason, don't be an early adopter.
marcus
Glad you're loving it my friend.
I love it Rocky. Such a fun bike to ride.
(I road my last new bike for twelve years.)
I have extensively test rode the Pan Am Special and I'm quite intrigued with it.
I really am enjoying it. Great ride for sure.
Those really made a huge difference with the ride.
yes I will, in fact I just purchased the Pan America. It gets delivered this weekend. Great honest review. Thank you sir
Congrats Paul. You’ll love it.
They probably do. Probably didn’t realize how much heat would generate and how it’s so close to hose. Easy fix though. I love both my H-D’s
I would think first year bikes will have something. That said, it’s a great bike and your ride really made me want to ride one. Good video my friend and HNY
Happy New Year my friend. Maybe I'll bring it to Tennessee.
Haha, put together by an intern. Classic. I’m the same way with the warranty.
I’ve bought first year bikes and only had a few minor recalls. Happy new year bro.
Happy new year to you as well. I haven't had many issues when I buy first year, but some are passionately against it.
@@Broncoride thanks bro
I bought the first year special model last year, and it's my first ADV bike. I've loved it so far. I recently did a trip from Dallas > Denver and back, and had an issue with the battery about 75 miles from home and nearly got stranded. I wasn't aware of the recalls at the time, so I'm taking it in next week for the recall. Still, I love this bike.
It’s had some minor glitches but I agree, I love mine too.
I always seem to wait a few years.... not only because the new tech needs to be worked out, but because i don't have the money to jump into a debt so easy. 🤷♂️
Debt is evil!
great updates. all fair points growing pains
it all comes down to your perspective
ride on Bronco ! first year model ? never have, but can't say i'm opposed to it either .....
Hey AB, hope all is well my friend. Growing pains for sure, but not deal breakers.
@@Broncoride it's a great bike !
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and challenges with the bike. It seems most new model vehicles in general have some issues that need to be ironed out. Ride safe and Happy New Year. 👍👊🇺🇸
Thanks my friend. I need your studio like you have for your bike.
That's very cool Jay.
I guess I tend to wait and see. BUT, men are impulse buyers. Great to see you out and I hope you had a great Christmas and Here's to a great New Year. Be well and safe my friend.
True on being impulse buyers. We see something we want, we buy. Happy New Year my friend.
You're at a whole different level with the airbag. Ha. Agree on life is short. I live by those words.
Good point on the aftermarket. Several companies are now just starting to pop-up for the PA. In the beginning, there were zero.
That would be awesome if we could do firmware upgrades through the app. Great call.
First time for first year for me, I'd do it again in a heart beat with this bike! I love this bike!
I agree Dan. Overall, it’s an awesome ride.
I never had the sumping issue on mine. I know they did a recall for it to handle it, but I remember everyone was up in arms back that first year.
The ADV moment I had went away... It'll be a least another year before I consider a new bike again. That said, when it comes down to it, I'd probably shy away from a 1st year model.
You'd beat the crap out of it anyway. Lol
I’ll would buy something for the first year and I did with my Sportster S. Great video and that Pan Am is sweet!
I was in a chat on FB with the GM of your local dealer. He said he knows you and talked about your Sportster S. Small world.
Hey Colin, buying a first-year bike to me is not an issue as long as they fix the problems in a timely manner as they have with you. Enjoy the ride, Cheers Dave
Exactly Dave. There will always be little annoyances, but they got fixed or getting fixed.
You still thinking about getting one?
@@Broncoride Yes. Going to see if they fix some of the known issues for the 2022.
I bought 1st yr heritage when they came out with the new frame and for the most part no regrets. They had one recall of the rocker box leaking which mine did but it was covered under warranty. They haven't made any real changes other than colors and tank badging over the last few yrs and I like mine better so its a win for me.
Win win for you my friend.
True on the IT. There will be a learning curve with HQ and the dealers with new tech.
Got good news today panniers/with brackets ,top box, foot pegs and gear lever are finally in and will be installed on the 10th 😎👍😀😀😀
Next question is I have 3000 miles on these tires in may going on a 3000 mile road trip … how many mile should I be able to get on tire s?🤔
I like the panniers for touring, but I will pick up some soft bags for off-road. I need to order some highway pegs too.
Electrical glitches normal. Pipe routing definitely poor final quality control. Nothing major. See you are loving it. Are you thinking of the 2022 BMW1250GSA?? LOL
Exactly, nothing major. I really am enjoying this ride. Nope, not thinking about the BMW at all. Lol
@@Broncoride 🤣
Off-topic. How do you like that Tourmaster Trek Jacket? Thanks for the Video new Sub.
Hey, thank you. I really like it. I have all the links in description. Reasonable on price and has a ton of features.
Right on. Glad you love it. Sure, some minor things, but overall solid ride.
I’m dreading changing the tires. Need to find a decent 50/50
I have bought a few first year bikes, and I have had no regrets. If it is what I want then I just go for it. However a brand new line first time introduction model, ummm not so much, not sure I would, I think that would make me wait.
Thanks Gloria. So far, so good with a couple of inconveniences. Solid bike.
I'm in the same boat, my 22 PAS has only 2100 miles and it lives at the dealer! I regret this purchase 100%
I absolutely regret buying my 2021 PAS😡
Left me stranded several times. Electrical was unbelievable and around 20,000 fuel pump went out.
Dealer swapped it out for a 2022 and it’s been better even though the fuel pump went out around 20,000 like the 21 did.
The Start Clutch Update fixed 90% of the issues with the 21.
Bought mine yesterday wish me luck. Planning a trip from Miami to Montreal (Canada) I hope she can do whole trip and back Without issues
Congratulations on that.
Hi Colin
Mine is going in the in January to be checked under warranty as I have noticed putting on the rear brake disc and the spokes on the wheels especially the back one have a mottled finish now despite being washed with HD recommended items and having only covered 1400 miles here in the UK.
Is this a deal breaker no it’s just sub con parts that have not been checked by the suppliers.
HD will iron this out and yes my click is wrong also if the app isn’t on 😂 but I don’t care 🤷🏻♂️
PS my Sportster 1200C had spoked wheels rode all year round for 2.5 years still looked like new!
Haven't heard about any brake issues, but like you said, sub parts from the suppliers. I'm like you with the clock. It is something very minor, and I didn't want to have to use the app every time, but they did say it is fixed now. Had it back for about a week, and the time is staying correct.
I would buy a first year model IF:
1. I knew the dealer well and trusted them.
2. I lived close to the dealer.
3. The brand had a good warranty program.
My Fastback Blue 2022 PAS should arrive next week. Those rules still work on a second model year buy.
I fall into all three of those. Congrats on the 2022. Enjoy the hell out of it.
Happy new year. At lease you know what time it is in Zimbabwe. Lol
See, that’s important, right?
Brought pan America no problems so done 7000 km great bike enjoy every time go out on it
Awesome Laurie. Well done.
Agreed, love mine.
Cool!
Dude, it’s super cold. How I look forward to March.
That’s so cool to hear. I’m really enjoying mine.
I 100% regret buying my PAS. It has been in the shop more than my garage.
Dude, that totally sucks. Not good.
I have no regrets, love the bike had no issues, don’t read the codes, don’t care about clock and just have a lot of fun riding it.
I love mine too. This bike is outstanding. So I have to deal with a couple glitches. I’m still happy with it.
@@Broncoride yes we were lucky but some did have pretty bad issues. Lemon laws are there for that reason and it’s a dice throw.
Hey, I didn't force you to ride it when we met up, Lol. Blame me, it's ok, I'm here to help you spend money.
13 to 1 compression is definitely high, but I enjoy the ride. Just took getting used to it Vs my Street Glide.
Good take and valid points on several of the things you mentioned. I still enjoy mine, but they need to tighten up on some things.
The Sportster S is having some similar growing pains. Hopefully everything “pans” out for you though.
Hopefully it’s not a flash in the Pan and instead, I get many miles out of it.
Ride Safe!
That’s something I definitely haven’t heard of. Very unique but it’s going to get fixed. Problem solved.
I have a 2022 Pan America S and I can tell you that I more than regret buying the bike, it has been a nightmare. There is not a week that I don't have to go to the dealership, I have electronic issues, motor issues even my gear selector fell off from the bike.
I hate to hear this. Unreal
Bro the PaN Am sold out its first year!......of course people buy the first year! I had mine a month after it was released. Had a couple minor things, but the fun factor of this bike outweighs any issue 10 fold.
Yeah man, can’t believe how much fun this bike is.
I bought a 2017 Ultra Classic, 1st year M8.
I also bought a 2021 Pan America Special 1st year. My non adjustable ride height Special will sometimes lower. At 5'8"... I just wish it did it ll the time. lol
I don't regret either bikes.
That’s one hell of a ride. I have to agree this is a great touring bike.
That's not the bike's fault. ha ha
Haha, well I fell into the first year on both of mine.
Does HD have a fix for my microwave that keeps losing time?
Bring it in to dealer
Love mine but new motor with 40 miles on the odometer wasn't the most confident start... New motor only took two weeks to ship and install though. Other then codes every ride its a great bike.
New motor after 40 miles. That’s not good at all. Glad they got it replaced.
Just got pegs from “Adventure Bike Pegs”. AWESOME!!!
Very cool.
I do not regret it at all. 12.5k miles in 3 months and never let me down.
Cool. Lots of miles
Yes
Sorry to hear that.
I'm still waiting for my local dealer to get and keep one for more than a day. Seriously, they are selling so fast that I can't get one. It's fine. I'll just wait. I have a kTm 790 adventure, but as soon as my dealer gets a pan america, I will be trading in my kTm.
I almost bought a KTM last year, but I held off. They are awesome machines but the PA is better suited for me.
@Broncoride kTm is cool but for me they lack in the long distance highway department
Thinking of purchasing a pan American or a Honda Africa twin. Wish someone would do a comparison video
AT is a nice ride. I've heard good things about that bike. Both are solid.
@@Broncoride cheers Colin
I got one and love it
Sweet.
If I want it bad enough Yes
Absolutely!
New starter New fuel pump new clutch And a buttload of codes got 11000 miles on the bike since July If I had it to do Over I would buy a BMW
Damn man. You have had nothing but issues. That sucks you’ve had so many. Hope H-D fixed everything.
I’m having heaps of code issues- very disappointed- hopefully dealer will solve issues 😪
So true. There will always be little annoyances but at the end of the day, this bike is awesome.
I’d buy a first year model, provided they either replaced the bike if it was plagued with issues that they couldn’t resolve, or give me a full refund and I walk away.My choice.
Mine has had some minor issues. Had many great miles so far. Computer is a little buggy though. Firmware fixed it.
@@Broncoride
Glad you were able to get it fixed. Thanks for your feedback.👍🏻👍🏻
My dealer has been pretty solid on trying to address the issues. It is new to them too. The techs there want to get better and I appreciate that.
Only when it's broke down at the shop
Haha. Very true.
No because you got the best paint scheme ever.
I do like this paint!
@@Broncoride it is why i bought this model.
Someone please steal mine
Haha
My 2022 Pan America has only 2100 miles and it lives at the dealer! Everytime I get it back it barely makes it 200 miles before it has problems, no starts, suspension glitches, most recently it stalled in a second gear downshift and locked up the rear tire in a curve, such a mediocre pile of crap at a premium price, I 100% regret buying this pos, good luck getting rid of it, it has depreciated like a stone! 6months old and 2100 miles, all HD accessories and its worth 1/3 of what I paid (msrp) be warned!
Thanks D Mac for the info even though it’s all bad news. It’s blows you have a lemon one.
Your is as well just give it time, they are all turds and impossible to get rid of.
