  • This was my first time on an ADV bike and off road...and I was on a 1250cc 560lb beast...the Harley Davidson Pan America! Here's what a short rider and ADV noob learned while riding out in the Mojave desert with a bunch of other motovloggers.

Awesome video Lali and mad props for getting on such a heavy (and tall) bike in/ON THE DESERT!!!👍
We just weighed my friend's ZX14R w/Turbo (510 Lb. at World Finals race this past weekend) and even though it's lowered for drag racing (you would easily sit flat footed on it👌) it still needs to be "respected" when pushing/moving from the side vs sitting/straddled...

I am impressed by both you and Doddle for how you continue to challenge yourselves in the world of motorcycles. I have a street bike as well as a dirt bike that is also street legal. The differences are *many* from road to street as you now know well. Your enthusiasm makes me smile and the fact that you are promoting the sport is fantastic! Keep up the great work and stay safe out there.

I've been riding 48 years, I took up vintage motocross after riding road bikes for 15 years, and I agree the biggest transition was learning how to corner, as it is different and opposite to road riding, and I came from riding dirt bikes on the farm when I was 10. Learning how to let the bike move under and with you was the key, and I love riding my 1988 Lowrider in dirt roads.

Very genuine, that is why I watch, besides your humor. I hope you enjoyed Calif Mojave and Red Rock Canyon, which is where I learned to dirt bike. Just recently bought a new (1st for me) street bike, and the skills from dirt help. Very courageous of you to ride such a big bike in the dirt. The smell in the desert in the morning is so refreshing. One time dirt riding (late 70's early 80's), east of Palmdale CA, where we had been riding for years, a helicopter had blasted at us on PA that we had to move and was a restricted area (south of Edwards Air Force Base). We had seen previously flying around this huge plane, it was actually the space shuttle. Be safe and look forward to more videos.

Hey @lali I've noticed a few things that might appeal to your sciency brain!
First, when you showed the last clip, where you were about to opt out of a climb because you were upset until you started singing, I think the singing helped because of your breathing. In the clip where you were near tears your breath sounds short and shallow which likely had you near hyperventilating, but you can't sing Highway to Hell without a few deep breaths so that panicky feeling went away when you began to sing. If you don't already have a breathing practice with a couple exercises for recovery/panic/relaxation breaths you might look into that. It's nothing fancy, just a few breathing techniques that can really help calm you when you're getting stressed.
Bonus theory, the reason your sweat was particularly foul day one is likely because you were very nervous and nervous sweat has different chemicals in it that smell much worse. The longer you're in that nervous sweat the more bacteria builds up and the worse it gets (Many folks think this is why dogs can sense a person who's not trustworthy; they smell the anxiousness in the sweat). As soon as you get comfortable riding ADV you would still sweat a lot but it's unlikely to smell quite the same. Always take spray deodorant (different than antiperspirant) to these things and spray the armpits of the riding gear when you take it off as the deodorant will kill the bacteria causing the odor (anti perspirant prevents you from sweating, deodorant tries to nullify the smell of the sweat). The really extreme, foulest of foul sweat odors occur when you have that nervous sweat and then it dries and then you sweat on it again and it reactivates that bacteria and it's gawd-awful, the deodorant spray as soon as you take the gear off and before you put it on the next morning really helps with that.
And you're right, sailers sing shanties because it keeps them rowing all in rhythm and it keeps them breathing in rhythm. Same thing with military singing cadences while marching.
You're awesome. I just found your videos through your Revzilla video with Doodle and have binged vids from you and @Shadetree Surgeon this weekend!

Man the mental exhaustion thing is legit. I'm a newer rider and I did my first bigger ride (curvy roads, highways, the whole bit, was a blast!) this weekend and when my buddy and I were coming back into town he said, he was tired and going home to take a nap.
I felt perfectly fine. Until I got into my apartment and sat on the couch, then I almost passed out. The ride had been really scary at times (first time cruising on a highway, going down hill on a windy road with no runoff?) and while I was physically fine I was mentally completely gone.
Just chilled the rest of the day.

I wear a compression shirt everyday and use a T shirt made with synthetic materials for those long day in the saddle days. On long trips I shower as soon as I get to the hotel, wash my compression shirt, t shirt, shorts, underwear and socks, and by the morning they are usually dry. I take two sets so I have a fresh set for the morning.

This is my first time seeing one of your videos. I heard about you through Shadetree. I really enjoyed this video. And not to be rude, but you are beautiful.

I ride my ktm 690 far into the mountains alone....I ride more carefully the further I get from people. Trust me nobody wants to be dragged out or air lifted. That's if you can contact help.
