My Uncle John Walker was at Pearl Harbor..
I believe he saw one of these..or at least an aircraft with two Japanese in it...when he first came on deck..he was on the Pennsylvania..
He was also at Midway...

B5N's had 3 crewmembers (pilot, bombardier, gunner).
So he must have seen a D3A dive bomber.

Though they were replica's ( BT 13 and AT 6 put together ) they were my favorite villain in the Movie " Tora Tora Tora " . A few were based ( replica's ) at LB Airport back in the 70s.

Of the three torpedo carrier aircraft developed in the thirties,, the TBD, Fairey Swordfish and B5N it is the superior type 93 torpedo and the combat experience of the B5N Aircrews along with the relative dysfunction. of the early Mark 15 and inexperience of the TBD Aircrews that put the B5N as the better total weapon system IMO.. the British having ushered in the carrier age at Taranto Harbor not withstanding the lack of prescient assessment of the future of carrier aircraft design by the relevant powers that be..

And IMO yes the total of VT Group attacks preceding the arrival of the SBD Aircrews brought the CAP down from the picket duty altitude . I fail to see how the argument based on the fact that the Zeke could make that altitude in a few minutes has relevance if they never did and the obvious IJN CAP defense against thw total separate VT Group attacks still remains the primary reason for the CAP's lack of adequate high altitude picket in place Target fixation seems to me a subfactor to that. That's the only disagreement I have with the more comprehensively researched contemporary telling of the battle . . . For what it's worth from the cheap seats Waldron's decision to abandon the protection of his escort group under the atmosphere of an insubordination doesn't strike me as responsible to his aircrew, whatever the other faults of CV 8's task group that day might've been.. The coincidental timeline's fortunate effect on the battle's outcome marginally mitigates but doesn't change that carefully weighed opinion.

Ensign George Gay survived. His book is a good read. I had the honor of meeting him way back in the early eighties. His autographed book is a cherished possession.
