    In 1943-44 my father was a PV-1 pilot with VB-144. When he returned to the states in late 44 through 1945 he was was an instructor flying PV-2 from NAS Hutchinson and later NAS Pensacola and JAX. His first pacific deployment was as an SOC pilot from the USS New Orleans. Coral Sea, Midway and Guadalcanal.

      Cool! My dad was a PV-1 pilot with VB-139 in 1945 as well. After the war he became an engineer with Ford Motor Company, and I happened along in 1949. He saved quite a few pictures of the A/C flying and parked in the snow. Best one showed their small mascot dog lifting his leg against the landing gear just as the official crew picture was taken.

    My father was a radio man/belly gunner. He said the belly guns had such a limited range of horizontal motion as to be basically useless. He said the one time they spotted a zero while patrolling in the Aleutians they immediately dove for cloud cover. When he got back to his gunner position he said he saw the zero also diving for cloud cover because the real enemy was the cold and getting you plan disabled was a death sentence. After the war he had a successful political career in California and in the state Assembly there is a 81st desk permanently covered in black cloth in memoriam to Jesse Unruh.

    I do trust that the tailwheel is retractable. In the visual of the plane flying by, the tailwheel was hanging down, behind that lower gun turret, putting it in danger of being shot off by your own guns!

    The Sprayer N7273C was a PV-2 I flew for Ralco Aerial Applications out of Cheyenne WY. We operated four of them under a Department of the Interior (DoI) contract to kill Grasshoppers. The critters spent their nights on Federal Badlands in the Dakotas, then emerged around dawn crossing into farmers Wheat Fields for their breakfast. So, we had to take off just before dawn, form up while staying under 100 ft. AGL, guided by a Piper overhead. We lined up on flags set by DoI personnel on horseback. Then it was “Booms On” from the lead ship. Malathion was our weapon of choice. Unfortunately, we carried 800 gallons in one huge “UNbaffled” tank which blocked the cabin door. Our only way in and out was through two small hatches over the cockpit. Rule number One: Don’t Ground-loop upside down. It made for a very heart pounding takeoff as the Malathion rushed forward then aft. It literally took both of the crew to first push then pull during those 33,000 GTW departures. After four hours we were Bingo Fuel. Most of us flew back to the airport under 300 feet. Once you’ve flown hours every day at 50 to 100 feet AGL, any higher made us afraid of heights. We had 2850 radials swinging four bladed props. After breakfast, co-pilots refilled the engine oil sumps (took at least five gallons) then hand pumped the next day load of Malathion. It paid really well, hundreds of dollars a mission. A lot of money for a 20 year old youngster as a summer job. Fascinating group of tough skilled pilots, and stories galore from this small niche segment of Aviation. It was worth the risk.

      Just about fell over reading your account. My dad was killed crop dusting in a PV-2 IN 1962 . The company out of Cheyenne Wy. Spraying fire ants in Louisiana. I was just sent the article.

      The aircraft is airworthy but we don't fly it, we currently operate the C-47...

    How does the lockheed Hudson fit into this?

      It's basically a design evolution of the Electra airliner, to the Hudson bomber to the PV one and pv2.
