For those looking to fly in a PBY the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Ontario, Canada offers rides in the Consolidated Canso the Canadian equivalent of the PBY.

Fun fact about the PBY. When I was a kid (in the sixties), I read an article in Flying (I believe) Magazine about a fella who had converted a PBY into a pleasure craft, a flying recreational vehicle, if you will. The one thing that I remembered was that the PBY had this one drawback. Whenever the aircraft had it's wheels down in the water, as in entering the water from a ramp, the brakes would get soaked and would generally not dry out in flight. The fella related that it was not uncommon to come in to land after a six to seven hour flight, and then making 4 or 5 "touch and goes" (while riding the brakes) before the brakes were dry enough to stop the airplane.

That's very interesting and probably a lost item since most of those operators are now gone...

10 hour endurance? Are you stating this only for your plane or all Catalina's? In WWII some flights were far longer. Wing floats don't create lift, they retract to reduce drag. Docile? Black Cats are night bombers. Helicopters didn't replace the Catalina in 1940s.

The aircraft due to the large wing could loiter in an area for up to ten hours. Wing floats in the down position due induce drag, in this case the floats in the wingtips in the retracted position due induce lift. Yes black cats were night flyers, Helicopters ended the career of the flying boats - and yes they were introduced in the late 1940's by the U.S. The Germans which were much further along had functional maritime helicopters during WWII.
