I was in VP-17, 1965 - 1968 late. I went on three deployments to the Vietnam conflict, and was air crew for the last two deployments for myself. I was radio operator / avionics. Lots of stories and moments with blown engines, massive hydraulic failures, and a couple of enemy attacks. I enjoyed the radio stuff, as I do to this day. Additionally I saw some special and experimental P2's, the US Army had some at Cam Ranh Bay, USN had a few AP2E's at Cam Ranh Bay ( VAH-21 ), and VO-67 had some OP2E, special surveillance/sensor dropping planes. VO-67 had some bad times there.

I used to fuel some of Clays jets back in the 1980s when I was a fueler at FBO Oasis Petroleum a few buildings down from Lacy Aviation. When a 23 would take off, the entire airport would stop to watch. These monsters were loud, shrill screaming polluting missiles. Before the days of EPA, hush kits and noise regulations. They were outrageous little jets.

The real Belle sits in Wright Patterson Airforce Base Museum. When the final mission happened for the Belle, she flew with 35 other 17's.

I met a Surgeon at the Phx Country Club in 1989 that flew this airplane during the WW-2, I asked him about landing the plane in the rough ocean waves, he told me that the ship would drag a raft behind the ship to smooth out the swells and it made a suitably flat surface, I had built a model of this plane years before meeting him, I wish I could remember his name,,, he was quite a guy,

Back in 2014 the Liberty Foundation was loaned this “Movie” Memphis Belle B17 (Their “Liberty Belle” B17 was down for repairs.); they took the plane on tour for airport open houses. In April of 2014 they were at the local airport, in Hayward, CA. I was able to walk through, and later took a 30 minute flight in, that plane! An experience that I’ll never forget; I sat in the bombardier’s seat as we flew over the Golden Gate Bridge. During WWII; a cousin was stationed stateside working on perfecting the bomb site for the B17; a neighbor flew as a bombardier in one that flew along the south eastern coast of the United States; and my mother’s uncle was a waist gunner, flying missions over Germany.

I was an Ocean Systems Tech shore based SOSUS passive sonar analyst in the 80s on both coasts We used to plot the P3 sorties and submarine bearing boxes and sometimes tell the P3s where to drop the sonar buoys When they had the pizza dish on the top we joked they were pizza delivery I don’t recall any jokes about dropping ‘contraband’ but I wouldn’t put it past us-we were all jokesters

When he retired from the Air Force in 1964, he was hired on at Douglas in Long Beach as a C-133 pilot to fly the Apollo capsule parachute tests out in El Centro for NASA. I took him to Travis AFB to watch the last air worthy C-133 land in 2008.

B25 "Mitchell" a bomber mainly used in the Pacific theatre, this bomber was used to raid tokyo to avenge the pear harbor bombings known as the doolittle raid led by Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle, they tookoff at the USS hornet.

The B-25J “Mitchell” A plane used for short-medium range bombing runs, normally in squadrons of 8-12. These are the same bomber types that were launched off of the USS-Hornet(CV-8), for the Doolittle raids on Tokyo, led by the legend himself James Doolittle.
