Grunbeld’s love for the battlefield, his height in regular form and the fact that he can turn into a freakin dragon makes him that much more intriguing.
Grunbeld's origin story does suit the amount of control he has over himself as an inhuman apostle, along with his protective behavior over Sonja and Mule. He's not some bestial killer like Wyld who was a hedonistic savage. Along with Irvine and Locus and Zodd, Grunbeld is a truly composed and disciplined individual whose strength of will is matched only by his towering stature. I feel like this discipline is what separates him and those I've mentioned from the lower apostles who have completely surrendered to their savagery and impulsive behavior. It feels almost as if their mastery of themselves is what makes them so powerful, as if they are condensing the raw power afforded them by reigning in their instincts as apostles.
No what makes them so powerful is that they have immense damn power, more than the ‘lower’ apostle you call em. Not some bs power of friendship crap that you came up with lmao

The ability to become an apostle and still maintain your humanity is definitely something that sets Grunbeld and his ilk from other apostles. I do have to wonder if it’s tied to their desires or if it is merely their strength of character and will that allows them to wield such massive power. Much like a forge shaping iron into a weapon grunbeld became a great weapon through becoming an apostle. But it makes me wonder how Wyld and he would fare in a battle against each other. I totally understand why Guts gets so annoyed with Grunboy. Like it’s real easy to be a super uppity and “honorable” fighter when you always have the back up of turning into a almost indestructible dragon when you start getting your ass kicked. Same thing with Zod like if you want to actually be challenged then why do you have a super OP transformation??

Finally someone with good sense, also, that nigh-indestructible dragon form was gonna get killed by Guts if Farnese was a little more competent, I think a fully unhinged Guts can kill any of the "honorable" bitch-asses hypocrites and Zod at this point, he just needs to get his shit together again, pick up the Dragon Slayer from the floor, and fuck up Falconia, his boy, or better yet, main man, Rickert, is there, and he was an apprentice of the great Godo, also the fact he bitch slapped the Bitch of Light, seems Rickert's badassery is beyond the physical and astral planes of existence.
Guts isn't human. He wields a 400 pound sword. Sorry - unless humans are much stronger than in real life he is simply something else which is okay with me. Guts is... Human will made manifest.
They only transform for those they see as worthy opponents i.e. Guts, or to save time dealing reckless carnage to hordes of unworthy opponents (everyone else). His hypocrisy is more-so in that he sacrificed his humanity, so he can no longer claim any honor, which is a distinctly human concept and trait.
In hindsight I think Miura regretted making them so young guts looks and acts like a 30-40 year old man. Serpico being a mid 20s guy is believable but guts is way too jaded to be a 22 year old.
I like how grunbeld lectures guts about how dying on the battlefield is the highest honor any warrior can strive for, but when his own time to die on the battlefield came, he cried out to the god hand in despair. Awfully fucking hypocritical for a character usually so sensible and grounded.

After hearing Grunbeld’s backstory, there was nothing about him during his human life that gave me an inkling that he was an evil person or that he had the qualities of a demon. Unlike Wyald, or Griffith, or Rakshas, and of course Ganishka; Grunbeld seemed like a decent person overall. He cared about his friends and his nation; but with him being betrayed by his leaders and best friend, he was put in a crappy situation where he had no choice but to sacrifice his friends to the godhand. I find it very sneaky and manipulative that the god hand requires a person to be in a state of extreme despair and mortally wounded for a person to become a member of demonkind. Because if Grunbeld and his friends weren’t in the situation that they found themselves in, he probably wouldn’t have sacrificed his love interest or his best friends.
