    It’s not marketed as a fuel saving hybrid system, rather as an additional performance boost. Plus having that instant torque in theory will make it better off road compared to even a diesel. The soft suspension is a trade off for improved wheel articulation in tough off road conditions. Just replace the rubbish tyres it comes with. Even compared to the newly upgraded Prado it’s still a decade ahead in terms of technology and comfort with significantly less noise than that prehistoric 2.8 litre diesel engine. A tweak to the suspension, with dual purpose tyres and it rides significantly better. Yes it isn’t proved over time in Australia, yet China have been making cars domestically for decades now. Even in the naughties I was impressed with driving in China. I’ve also owned a couple of Landcruisers over the years including the last generation. Plus you also need to factor into the fuel economy that this doesn’t require premium fuel so that’s a 15-20% saving to also consider.

      I don't believe he did his research on how this system is designed. It's designed to have v6 performance from a 4 cylinder without killing it with boost. And it does it well.

    I’d be interested in your opinion on the best of the “cheap” SUVs - would it be the Chery Tiggo Pro 8, the Haval H6, or something else? No car reviewers ever seem to compare them against each other. Also which ones do you think will last in Australia and which ones will most likely fail after a couple of years.

    This hybrid tank 500 is only for Australian market because of that emission thing . In Chinese domestic market, I believe only the 3.0 v6 TT version, because it is initially designed to have larger engine, not that pity 2L petrol with a battery. And not a even PHEV. So it is almost pointless to chase up fuel economy as well as performance. The hybrid version of tank 500 is just a ram without balls, because Labour Party stopped the larger engine vehicle. The average fuel economy for the v6 TT tank 500 tested in China is about 15L per 100, which is not bad compared to my previous v6 Kluger(14.6) and RX350(13L per 100), btw the RX350 is a shit, you can’t do anything with it, only tows 1600kgs. Can’t even tow a small caravan.

Both offer better resale value, a more reliable powertrain package, bigger dealer network, and superior driving dynamics. The Mitsubishi even comes with a 10-year warranty. I recently purchased an Everest Trend 4WD (MY23.50), I did look at the Prado (price and yeah price was the issue, well that and the lame duck engine and the fact its being superseded soon), Fotruner (um, yeah was tempted on price but overall function let it down and that lame duck engine), Pajero Sport (was tempted and almost bought it, but none in stock anywhere in trim and colour I wanted) and also the Rexton (just wanted to test drive it was never serious) and did look Tank 300 (lol) and Tank 500 (even bigger lol) as both are petrol turbo (with the 500 having hybrid tech).
    Seriously the Tank 500 is nice however you would be throwing good money at bad vehicle and the resale would kill you alone (reports are the wholesalers are only going to give 30% retained value after 5 years ... YEESH), unless you can justify throwing away your money then you cant seriously think about this vehicle from GWM, that said should the Tank 500 hold up well in service they will make for an excellent 2nd or 3rd hand purchase in 3 to 5 years time.

    Why does the car move in launch control mode before the brake pedal is released? Isn't the whole point of a launch control program to prevent wheel slip from brake boosting?

    • @drivingenthusiastaustralia
      @drivingenthusiastaustralia  3 місяці тому +4

      Good question. In my opinion these systems are not true launch control. Proper launch control is really only possible with automated-clutch automatics, including DCTs. This is like many other carmakers, like BMW, that offer 'launch control' but really it's just brake-loading with some tweaks to the ECU and transmission mapping to optimise acceleration. Long story short, even with the brake pedal pushed hard the engine is still engaged with the gearbox and wants to move the vehicle forward. I tried harder during actual Vbox timing - the external shots are purely video. Hope that helps.

    I've heard landcruiser Lane keeper assist is rubbish. In fact most people that I know that have lane keeper and blind spot monitoring in their cars turn it off as it is to intrusive in city.

      LC300 isn't as long but track widths are 30mm wider (46mm wider overall), also 45mm taller. But mainly I'm referencing VFACTS vehicle classification. Tank 500 is in the same "SUV Large < $80K" segment as Prado etc. LandCruiser is in "SUV Upper Large < $120K" class. Hope that makes sense.
      Yep, lane keeping aids are annoying in all cars in my opinion, and I often criticise other cars just the same. However, the lane keep setup and in particular the driver monitoring camera in this seems to be poorly calibrated compared with other (also annoying) systems out there.
      As for the weight, the top-spec Prado Kakadu weighs 2455kg and the top-spec Tank 500 is 2605kg (kerb, according to Redbook). That's 150kg more. And yes, the LandCruiser is heavy as well - that's not good either. If it was lighter it would get even further off road.

Even in F1 racing, hybrid tech is only there to meet FIA regulations and to help with the development of such tech for the road cars for the respective brands.

      Because ANCAP doesn't actually test things like driver monitoring cameras. It's just a tick-box. If it has it, the car is eligible for 5 stars. It doesn't matter how well (or not) it works. As long as it has it. There are a few technology prerequisites like this.
      Also, ANCAP does not test braking performance, at all.

    Definitely don’t buy the Chinese car version that not been sold in China. I don’t want to say that but Chinese mandate iteration is very fast sometimes clients are test drivers and they will update the bugs and issue afterwards. For instance Tank300 has sold 30k cars in China (mainly in petrol) and it updates the gearbox software for several times ( to improve the smooth between 2nd and 3rd) gear. Those issue we have seen in AU versions are mainly new issues for those cars. ( 17inch ATT tyres are main choices in China with no break issue; no compulsory emergency line keeping). HEV are not sold in Chinese market so u would better not buy this.

    Yes, the braking is even worse than the last gen Prado, but mainly due to the Giti tyres, as most of Chinese reviews got under 40m results with Continental tyres…
    Even with the worst situation, the acceleration is still much better than most or all of the competitors…and it gives torque when off-road.
    It’s petrol, it’s certainly using more fuel than diesels…but yes, PHEV is the way to get much better fuel efficiency which GWM sell in China.
    The interior space is not worse than the Pardo 7seats, if it is not better…
    The thing I cannot comment is the reliability…

      Thanks for your comment. It's never a good idea to compared results from different channels/tests because the surface, temp, timing equipment is all going to be different. Even the vehicle is likely different. I also notice Car Expert has a GWM ad campaign running next to their review on the website...
      When you say: "The interior space is not worse than the Pardo 7seats, if it is not better…"
      Are you referring to boot space?
      Boot space is listed at 98L with three rows up in the Tank 500 and 120L in the Prado.

      Regarding on the 255kw, it’s the simple combination of the maximum output numbers of the engine and P2 elec motor. As it’s a system with a quite large motor and a small 1.7kwh battery, the discharge rate of the battery is not enough to support the motor all the time. PHEV is the way to get constant power output. Anyway, I don’t think 7.7 to 8.5s are a huge difference.

    • @jeremyyang9895
      @jeremyyang9895 3 місяці тому

      The stats I referring are all their tested results.
      For the boots, I could barely see the difference with the third row up, but the official numbers should be right.

    Not certain I would want be an early adopter of one of these. I think you find a Prado VX will be significantly more especially the new model when released which will likely be over $90k driveway for a VX.

    • @drivingenthusiastaustralia
      @drivingenthusiastaustralia  3 місяці тому +3

      Yep, new Prado prices have gone up (excluding on-roads):
      GX: $72,500
      GXL: $79,990
      VX: $87,400
      Altitude: $92,700
      Kakadu: $99,990
      Keen to test the new model. If it is much better than the predecessor then I guess some of that extra cost is justified. But even as it is, the outgoing Prado, in my opinion, is a superior product to this Tank 500 in terms of long-term reliability, efficiency, real-world safety, resale value, and driving dynamics. I'd be happy to pay extra for that.

    For only a few grand less than a Prado you'd have to have rocks in your head to buy one of those. And even aside from having to live with a shitbox for however long you tolerated it, the resale will be woeful.
    Fuel consumption over 14l/100 by the time you got to the offroad section too.
    It's genuinely amazing to me that people even consider it - and it's shameful that none of the other fawning reviews of the vehicle have noted the soggy suspension and appalling braking performance.
    Thankyou for being one of very few honest reviewers. Keep it up, if there's one thing the world needs it's people telling it how it is.

      Thanks a lot. Yes I agree - it's bad enough with politicians.
      I think there are some advertising deals going around with GWW. That might be why others aren't reporting this stuff. A good way to tell is check out the written reviews and if there is some kind of campaign going within the review, that isn't an automated Google ad but a custom GWM ad (or whatever the respective brand is), it's probably some kind of paid deal.

      @@drivingenthusiastaustralia yes, sometimes you see a review of a car you're familiar with and think there simply has to be something going on because it's so detached from reality. I've got a huge collection of older car mags and it's really notable how the tone has changed. If something was crap in the 80s or 90s it was called out.
      There should be rules around graft, at least it should have to be declared like it is with other types of media.
      You're as close to the Peter Wherrett ethos as I've seen in years and I mean that as a big compliment. I always had the utmost respect for his style - you've probably seen that the ABC has uploaded some old Torque episodes and it's really stark to see the contrast between someone saying what they really think about a car without being scared and some of the reviews you see now where the worst thing people will say is "it uses a little more fuel than I expected" or "I don't like this colour".
