2024 Model 3 Performance Stock Lap / Laguna Seca /

  • We took the new Performance model out for a rip at Laguna Seca while it was still stock and it didn't disappoint! The stock Pirelli P Zero's are awful but even with that crutch it is still a sub1:40 car. All we did was flush the brake fluid to Motul RBF660, everything else is bone stock.
    Observations from the Day:
-The Pirelli P Zero Tire is the weakest link in the lap times. It took a few sessions to get a clean first lap with cool tires. After one lap cornering and braking grip was significantly worse.
-Since the tires were the limiting factor the brakes held up for the most part, but I'd assume with a slightly better tire the brakes would be the next pain point.
-With 100% regen the battery did heat up fairly quickly. 1 hot lap was all we could expect to get. With upgraded brakes we could dial the regen back and I think we could get 2-3 solid laps.
-The new active damper works very well, at least on stock tires. I always felt like I had complete control of the car, the same could not be said of the previous gen car. I believe the new aero package also has something to do with this, especially coming over turn 1 at 120mph.
-We'll be going back in a month with some new mods to see what it can really do.

Really good driving man! I was impressed by seeing this video. Someone finally using these Model 3 Performances for something other than drag racing is nice to see, and with a good driver who really knows how to drive one of these and make full use of its performance.
I feel the 2 main weak points of this car is the weight and battery cooling. The Model 3 family in general are very track capable and I really hope someone makes a breakthrough on battery cooling for these performance EVs because I feel that is their weakest point. Despite the weight though the car seemed fairly nimble but you can tell just by listening to the tires and seeing the steering action that this is a really heavy car. Putting those 2 things aside, this thing doing a 1:39.8 is insane. I'm sure if you put better tires on it, it could probably go well into the 1:37 range.

Everything you said is on the money. The weight is heavy but compared to other modern sports sedans it is basically the same. The cooling is the biggest disappointment though. Maybe the next gen car will be an improvement.

Heavier than a dedicated track car of course but pretty average for a modern road orientated sporting saloon/sedan.

This is great to see, thank you. I have a M3P on order and am researching what I need to do to get it to handle the occasional track day (coming from a Civic Type R.) Any thoughts on the MPP "Page Mill" rotor upgrade ($1K) vs full BBK ($5K?)
Am hoping the rotor improvement, pads, fluid will be enough to handle ~5 laps with regen off, but not sure.

The early cars did have ps4s, but somewhere along the line they switched to p zero's. The p zero's are perfectly fine on the street and most likely have less rolling resistance for efficiency.

It has a lower cost of ownership vs. a 6-figure sports car and only costs $15 to "fill-up".
It is a good daily car that is well rounded and easy on your pockets.
