Heat Rusty Bolts RED-HOT in Seconds - Mini-Ductor Venom MDV-777

  • We tested and reviewed the Mini-Ductor Venom MDV-777 on some rusty nuts and bolts in the shop. In less than 30 seconds, the induction heat turned a 1/2" headed bolt to cherry red. We could still hold the other end, even with the head glowing red. Worked great on a broken exhaust manifold bold, suspension bolts and other general fasteners. This is a big safety benefit since no open flame is needed.
    The MDV-777 is a 120V induction heating tool that uses a coil of wire around the fastener to heat the metal. This only works on ferrous metals, so it's not going to heat aluminum, brass, etc. You can pick one up on Amazon for around $450.

    Please note: if you want to save the threads on a nut or bolt, quench it with cold water immediately after you have gotten it hot. This shocks the rust, creating a black oxide powder that will wash away with water as you loosen it. Water is your BEST lubricant! You will nearly always gall and ruin the threads by turning it while hot.

      thank you for the tip. I was actually wondering this exact thing. If it doesn't work, can you reheat it after you've quenched it and do it again?

    • @dirtfarmer3891
      @dirtfarmer3891 10 місяців тому +1

      @@NN-cw9rb yes, you can heat it progressively hotter and quenching it immediately for as many sessions as it takes. Also, try slapping it with a hammer, if you can, just before you heat it again. Remember, you are shocking the rust by heating and quenching.

      Goodness Gracious! that's a nice chunk of change. I just bought a cheapo off Amazon. How well does it work? Mine seems to do alright but if I could go back I probably would spend a little more on one

    I have a 2004 VW GTI and need to remove a bolt linking the control arm to a subframe. The bolt attaches to a captive nut welded to the subframe. There's a very small hole (maybe 3/8") in the control arm that I've been using to spray penetrating oil on the nut, roughly once every 4 months. I'm doing this in preparation for attempting to remove the bolt. My concern is that roughly half the people that attempt this job, end up breaking the weld that holds the captive nut. If this happens, it's impossible to remove the bolt without grinding a hole in the subframe in order to wedge a screwdriver against the nut and hold it in place while removing the bolt. The Mini-Ductor Venom seems like a good tool, but can it be made to fit into a very small 3/8" hole? I'm thinking about using a heat gun instead. The problem with a heat gun is that it blows very hot air and that air spreads. I'm unsure how hazardous the residual hot air would be to other areas above the subframe. What's your opinion? Thanks for making this video. Seems like a good product.

    Looks awesome but hard to justify the cost (around $550 as of this writing) unless it would be needed frequently in a revenue-generating use.

    "If i used a torch i would not be holding the end of this"
    so then does that mean the induction heater will only heat the head of a long bolt?

      Low resistivity metals such as copper, brass and aluminum take longer to heat. Yes, it works, but it may take a little longer. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    I'm not a mechanic. Is this product designed to replace a torch?

    • @Shoptoolreviews
      @Shoptoolreviews  3 роки тому

      Yes, for the most part, it can replace a torch. There will still be times that you need a torch, but this is much safer when you don't. thanks for watching.
