Brian Blessed OBE is a national treasure, actor, presenter, writer and mountaineer. From Augustus to King Richard IV in the first series of Blackadder. Prince Vultan in Flash Gordon, he was Nass in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace and the voice of Clayton in Disney's Tarzan. The voice of Brian cannot be unheard.. most notable in my youth was his "Gordon's Alive" in the movie Flash Gordon.

@@samhilton4173 In addition to voicing Clayton in Disney's Tarzan, he also did the iconic Tarzan Yell used in the film. Tarzan's voice actor couldn't pull it off and the sound guys at the recording studio mentioned this to Brian, and he sort of put his hand up and said "I can give it a go if you want"... And he killed it :D

Brian Blessed has literally been classified as superhuman by some Scandinavian research center on ageing. He was benching over 400 pounds in his 70s.He climbed Everest in his 60s or 70s.
The Man is a force of nature.
And he played the king of the hawk men in flash Gordon and Boss Nass in Star Wars.
He's a renaissance Man in the truest sense.

Ref the World Eskimo Indian Olympics. This began in Fairbanks, Alaska. The games were staged there for four and a half decades until they moved to Anchorage in 2007. This was the only event held at another venue. Fairbanks the permanent home of the games. Linking them to Alaska is therefore correct, even if participants also come from other communities.

It’s probs been recommended to you before but it’s worth exploring (for your own entertainment) the radio show The Museum of Curiosity. It’s hosted by John Lloyd the creator of QI, each season he’s joined by a different comedian as a cohost. And the guest format is that of another comedian/well known individual and two experts in particular field of study. Each guest talks about a particular subject of interest which is donated to the fictional museum in the title of the show.
Brian Blessed was in the first episode where he talked more about the Yeti and Sean Lock was the comedic co host for the first season.

I used to help at a film festival in London, generally being the host for Q&As with guests. I was also known for having rather a loud voice. One year Brian Blessed was going to be a guest and, obviously, I was desperate to host his Q&A, but unfortunately I had to fly over to California halfway through the festival and wasn't going to be there for Brian's event.
The general consensus was that we could still do the event. With me in LA and Brian in London everyone would still be able to hear us....
Brian really became BRIAN around 1980, with Flash Gordon. It's interesting to look at his acting work before that. I first remember seeing him as Augustus in 'I,Claudius', and he of course became famous for 'Z Cars' in the 60s. When a good director can reel him in he is a very fine and nuanced actor. Generally though we just love it when he's BRIAN!!!

I suspect the 1845 sledload of button polish, handkerchiefs, curtain rods and a writing desk were supposed to be trading goods when they arrived at their destination. I'm not sure how they'd sell in Russia, China and Japan, but these items sound like they were in demand on the west coast of Canada and the USA, which were still in their Frontier stage of Western colonialism, and the people there would probably appreciate those touches of civilisation that were in short supply. I"m quietly confident in my assessment, only because I've been told on QI that curtain *rings* were a very popular trade item in the USA in the 19th C.

Even if derogatory names for people, such as eskimo, fall out of favour, it's often not something people become aware of unless living close enough. QI has referred to the aria in Northern Scandinavia's region where the Sámi live as Lapland, which is considered a derogative term by them (and it is). They call it Sápmi, yet even some Scandinavians haven't become aware of the change and call it what they learned in school (or they purposefully disrespect the request).

maybe it's just a technical thing on my end. but your videos' trend is to differ in audibility. while the videos you are reaction to get quieter, your audio gets louder from vid to vid. i'd like to hear what the good people of QI have to say, but if i turn the volume up, it's like you, Neil, sitting on my shoulder whilst shouting in my ears. Does anyone else have this kind of trauma inducing experience?
other than that i like your commentary, it's so scientifically founded or just black and white general knowledge and not exaggeratingly over the top, i love it. i must have watched hundreds of hours of your vids for years.

Stephen was waaay off with the pronunciation of the volcano. Alan was much closer.
Though he was right about igloo. Among inuits it means any sort of house, not just a snowhouse.
Also, eskimo is perfectly fine. Much like the indian/native american malarkey, this eskimo or inuit "problem" is something made up by outsiders. Some call themselves inuits, some call themselves eskimos. And remember that not all eskimos are inuits, so whichever word you use, you risk offending someone.

In New Zealand we have a candy that used to be called Eskimos, a complaint was made about the name in 2009, they finally renamed them Explorers last year. I won tickets to a Edmonton vs Saskatchewan game when I lived over there in 2014/15 and had no clue what was happening the entire game.

as much as I enjoy QI, I always take everything they say with a grain of salt and treat it as entertainment rather than fact. There was one time they took quotes from a french classic novel and treated that as a source when the novel was actually fictional... And as a student doing my Phd in China, I can tell you they've hardly gotten anything right about any of their China related subjects... One particular gripe I had was about their characterization of the Chinese reforestation projects, basically saying that since a lot of the forests are monocultures, they'll all die and basically be a waste of time. I have a particular issue with this because I'm doing my phd in environmental science... This is a complete misunderstanding of the situation, since the goal is to first stop desertification by locking down the sand, then plant drought resistant drought resistant shrubs and grass, then plant drought resistant monocultures to establish a soil base, and then introduce more diverse flora. You can't just take a barren desert and instantly transform it into a vibrant and diverse ecosystem. The Chinese are actually at the forefront of reforestation technology and techniques, and a lot of these techniques are being copied and brought to places like Israel and other dry areas all across Africa.
