Sweet! I've been wanting to get this game for years, ever since I found out about the Japan-only console release. I first encountered Shadows of Mystara(didn't find out about Tower till years later) in Las Vegas at Circus, Circus during a bowling Tournament at one of the other casinos. Been a favorite ever since. :)
The only thing I've ever known about D&D was my brothers and their friends making their own spin on the campaigns, such as a Skyrim campaign. It was entertaining to hear bits and pieces of it from my brothers.
Such a difficult game, but so satisfyingly put together. As a kid, I played it in the arcade every chance I got, and I was ecstatic when they finally released it on PSN.
3 things that bug me about this game. : 1- You can't change character when you continue. 2- Sometimes you don't have enough time to pick up treasures and the game automatically moves your character to the next stage, especially after a boss fight. 3- Flying or ground level enemies that your character attacks only when it feels like it. Also, I find the first game better because it's more streamlined. The second game has 3 menus for spells and items to cycle thru, it's a mess in a game where a second of inattention can get you killed.
I thought I was super lucky that my local arcade had both Tower of Doom and Knights of the Round growing up. I loved both. Although, I didn't play any DnD as a kid so I definitely remember being more of a Knights fan. I would always get so excited every time I found a rideable horse, and a new armor set every rank up.
So glad you did this one, Jared. My friends and I liked pretending we weren't total nerds til we saw SoM at Mr. Arcade. After that day, we hardly played anything else.
Fun and interesting fact: same guy and part of team, which did Tower of Doom and Shadow of Mistara, also did Princess Crown and years after that, controversial (but awesome) Dragon's Crown, spiritual successor of these Capcom D&D games. And they formed Vanillaware, creator of Odin Sphere and Muramasa.
+PAPYRUS THE COOL DUDE It's on sale on Wii U too, I just got it myself, it went from 15 bucks to 5.99. not a bad deal if you don't mind it not being on your PC.
"Every D&D game starts with murdering these little bastards." Except... except Baldur's Gate. The designers of that one didn't get that memo. Which is probably why the beginning of that game is HARD AS BALLS if you actually make a beeline to the Friendly Arm Inn like the game instructs you to. I've had Chronicles of Mystara on my PS3 for a while but it's only after watching this review that I was motivated to play through the game. It's a really fun one--head and shoulders above Golden Axe in my book.
Alexander's Pizza had one of the best arcades around. I haven't been in years, but i'm going to have to go back to see if they've still got games. Good on you for mentioning that place!
Watching this video all these years later, now that I know how D&D works… that Dwarf’s stats are literally worse than the average mindless, shambling zombie. Hell, they’re worse than the Kobolds you fight at the start of this game.
This is hands down my pick for best arcade game of all time. It seriously had enough content for a full console title, and it’s continued rereleases on consoles throughout the years proves that it has serious staying power. Definitely get this game.
I love when games warn you multiple times to not do something dangerous. The degression of text is always funny because it starts all proper and polite like "We highly advise you rethink your decision" to "Listen, numbnuts. This is our last warning."
To the D&D expecialists, can any of you guys explain to me why the Dragons in D&D can't make multiple uses of their breath attacks like any other Dragon in other fictional medias?
Gabriel Perrella Most likely fairness issues, if they could use their breath weapons unlimitedly then fighting them would be impossible, any dragon fairly intelligent would just stay to the air raining death on the party, killing the low con. characters on one hit probably and heavily wounding everyone else.
cause it's not natural phenomena but rather an act of magic and magic rules are established by the Goddess of magic, not by the nature of things or dragons themselves. This ability surely can be obtained through DNA but it still stays a magic ability, not biological one.
the roll to recharge mechanic is cool though. I feel if you made the DC higher then you could get away with having an unlimited dragon breath. Or boost it above 3 at least.
I actually remember playing this game around 10 years ago at a nickle-nickle arcade when those places were still somewhat relevant. It was tucked away in the free play section. My favorite class was the male wizard. I was one of those spell spammers too. I spammed ice storm almost constantly...until I ran out of points for it.
Oh my, finally found this game. I used to play this everyday at my high school's cafeteria during lunch break. Me and two buddies of my play together, we get pretty good at it and able to reach all the way till the tower part with just 1 quarter, but we always ran out of time because our lunch break is just 45 mins.
I played the German version. The translation is amazing, because it's so bad.
Nothing beats an attack by very polite goblins.
Alright, here's what you do. Get the funniest lines from the German Version, and make a compilation! DO IT DO IT DO IT!
Sounds like the translators didn't know how to translators!
Wait, what? Oh no, now I have to get the game just to see this.
We need more German translations. We need them. noe..
I have bad news for you.
Most german dubs are bad.
Y'know, for only having a Strength score of 12, the fighter is JACKED.
Rachel the Seeker Wow, bad priorities.... honestly I probably could bench more than him!

Elf is Jared's waifu.
10:08 actualy it's on sale now.
+Márk Blahó and we could buy it if it weren't for the MAJOR cache issues steam is having right now
it was in playstation plus some time ago
+PAPYRUS THE COOL DUDE It's on sale on Wii U too, I just got it myself, it went from 15 bucks to 5.99. not a bad deal if you don't mind it not being on your PC.
+Márk Blahó I can't find it on Steam, is it gone?
I think I'll grab the Wii U version if it's good on it.
Now if only we get a Final Fantasy game in the same style as this.
EAGLE RIVER, WISCONSIN!??! I WAS THERE ALL SUMMER!!
Hearing Projared talk about something so passionately is very entertaining.
I purchased and played this game (and its sequel) recently on the PS3 - talk about a throwback! It aged rather well!
"Every D&D game starts with murdering these little bastards."
Except... except Baldur's Gate.
It's a really fun one--head and shoulders above Golden Axe in my book.
...what?
D&D, welcome to the Capcom World. HADOKEN! :D
and since it's the Steam Holiday Sale, It's currently 7 bucks :D
+SnowSpriteCele it's the winter sale, not the holiday sale
right. ah well, a steam sale's a steam sale :3
I already bought it awhile back for my WiiU.
Yes, it's available for it.
+SnowSpriteCele It's $5
Jared, I don’t think people say it enough, but you have an amazing speaking voice and I could listen to you talk all day.
Alexander's Pizza had one of the best arcades around. I haven't been in years, but i'm going to have to go back to see if they've still got games. Good on you for mentioning that place!
1:28 Dexteriti.
Dexteriti.
Dexteriti
Try not to laugh at 6:48.
For me, it's completely impossible.
2:57 The music kinda sounds like Megaman X4's stage select theme
Watching this video all these years later, now that I know how D&D works… that Dwarf’s stats are literally worse than the average mindless, shambling zombie. Hell, they’re worse than the Kobolds you fight at the start of this game.
Jesus Christ how I've never heard of this, you can tell a lot of love was put in making this game
You and your brothers spent 60 to 80 coins on D&D?
Luckily we get D&December this year.
I heard Steam! OFF I GO!
This and the sequel are two of my favorite games ever! I always love turning people on to them!
These games are awesome! It's been several years since I've played them but they are excellent.
Do a review on the Dragon Age series, they've been my favorites since the Xbox360 days. I'd love to see it.
Great video. Excellent creator.
I like Dragon's Crown
Or boost it above 3 at least.
it's on winter sale right now on steam only 4-5 bucks
The game is on sale on the eShop! XD
