  • It's been a while! My apologies. It seems all my electronic devices completely SUCK ... but I digress! Here we'll decide to start filming halfway through a job (I've got too many irons in the fire!). I'll go over the battles I fought to disassemble another piece of 21st Century engineering to replace a completely blown impeller bearing, and replace the auger bushings and belts as a pre-emptive strike. We'll also install the "Impeller Mod", where strips of thick rubber are bolted to the impeller to close up the clearance between the impeller and the snowblower housing (should add to throwing performance, especially in heavy snow and slush).
    -Enjoy!

Excellent informative video! Totally in a agreement with the- “All Junk Today “, thought. Nice to see an Old School type put out a top quality video. I have to mention-I’ve learned that finishing a task ASAP, is the smartest way. At my age, especially, I tend to forget how I took things apart, real quick like. From one Mass. Guy, to another-Two Thumbs Up, to you!

Thanks buddy! That kit is great - I always find a perfect size for the job in there. Fills in the gaps left by my older kits. Found the perfect one for that bushing there. 👍
Thanks for the support, Chris! 👍🍻 You and the family have yourselves a Merry Christmas, and a Happy, Prosperous New Year.

Great video and work on the blower Smitty! And Merry Christmas also! I
I have a early 90's Ariens 8-24 blower. It does a great job. I ran a hot water spigot outside next to the cold one so I could wash the snow blower ( and cars ) in the winter. Works great.
Glad to hear you are staying busy with work, too bad about all of the 21st century crap breaking down on you. Hang in there!
    TakeCare,
    Bill

Hey Bill! Thanks - I appreciate that! Thanks for watching, and hope you all have a Merry Christmas as well!
That's a great unit, and a great idea you have there. When my parents remodeled their house, my dad had them put a hot water spigot in for that same reason. I bet your machine looks damn good for a quarter-century of hard labor! And I bet your vehicles are in above average condition, too. Sadly it seems to be rare today to see equipment that people actually care for. Everyone likes to throw money at the problem! I don't like throwing money at ANYTHING, lol. I want to keep the stuff going for decades.
Yeah, been a rough week for electronics over here, but the storm clouds seem to be clearing. We're gaining on 'em! Thanks for watching, Bill - I appreciate the support! 👍🍻

Merry Christmas, Scuba! Thanks for watching! I just got a '71 Ariens in here for work - thing will still be working, once I fix the belt and free up the bone dry drive engagement.

Ahh, it was your message I was in the middle of and had to run outside! Didn't get a chance to say, Merry Christmas, Scuba, and thanks for you continued support here. Much appreciated! Glad you got to work on the good stuff - that's a somewhat stress-free career there. 👍 🍻

    Hey Smitty!
Merry Christmas buddy, glad to see a video in the midst of your technology crisis. Hope you get the camera and computer sorted out.....
Nice repair/mod on the Ariens, should beat the bag out of the New England snow we get hopefully. Work safe, stay warm, enjoy your weekend!

Merry Christmas, Doug! Always something around here! First the TV, then my ancient flip phone, now the iMac - when it rains, it pours! Waiting on an external hard drive - once that comes in, I can get back with Apple support and get this thing straightened out. I want to back up everything before I do, since I have a feeling this one needs to be wiped and restarted again.
Anyway, the snowblower worked amazing during that first big storm we had. Got 2 feet out of that one. Threw the stuff like nothing. Good thing, since the plow truck blew a clutch line - that'll be the next vid! Take care, buddy! Stay warm!

I share your contempt for the way things are built these days and what seems to be planned obsolescence (designed to fail and/or milk the wallet). Good video.

    Good Job Here!
Another case of older, many times, is better.
Ariens at one point switched to aluminum gears for the auger and now they are back to steel, I wonder why...
    Great Video!

I found using those pressed rubber doormats don't work because they break apart really easy, the best is a sidewall of a tire and cut it above the thick wire cord that goes around the circumference of a tire that goes onto the rim. Cut out a big piece of that rubber and then I just run it through the table saw with a plywood blade and it cuts it like butter. I put those rubber pieces on a dozen snow blowers and they all get an extra 10-12 feet of distance. The shute never clogs with ice, it keeps it shaved off. It seems like they all take about three eighths of an inch of rubber extended beyond the auger blade, and running it for a while will wear down the rubber so it fits the shute perfectly. Trying to get the impeller off the shaft is a nightmare and it's never easy. It's just easier to take the Chute assembly off and do it from the top with quarter inch stainless nuts and bolts with Loctite.

Yeah this one was a total nightmare. Took a TON of heat and severe BEATING to get that impeller to even move. Crazy!
The rubber piece I used was a mudflap off a heavy commercial truck. So far, so good after over 2 years. It did crack up high, since I cut the ends way too long, but the thing will throw pure slush right across the street with no effort. Been working great since the overhaul. Super happy with it. Thanks for watching. 🍻

hey, you dont know the proper technique to remove the impeller pulley hub. Next time, you turn it face up, PB Blaster or similar, two pry bars opposite, MAP or acetylene heat on hub, then, MOST importantly, have tow people hold tension on pry bars, then hit the end of the shaft with either a hammer drill set to hammer only, or an air chisel, with an adapter or socket one size smaller than the shaft. The vibrations with tension slide these parts loose easier than you can imagine. Pounding on the end of the shaft is wrong. You can end up spreading the very end of the shaft and never get the hub off.

Michael Weene - Would be nice if I had the luxury of another body here to help me out, but I don’t. Got to do what you gotta do. Bottom line is, it came off and it’s fixed, right or wrong. With the amount of rust that was on this pulley, I don’t think another body would’ve made any difference whatsoever. This thing was frozen beyond frozen. It was a miracle it came off at all. Appreciate the tip, though.

late to the party, I use a pulley puller. easy peasy.

a pulley puller will take that hub off in 30 seconds. work smarter not harder.
