71 Ariens, 51 years old and still running. Oil change and maintenance is the key. Not like the disposable products today. Ethanol free is used in all my equipment, and like you said, starts right up. A little pricey but as a fellow upstate New Yorker, it's a life saver in my generator.
I know this is an old video. When I do a service I always clean the friction disk shaft with old gas. Wipe it clean and then put a thin layer of grease and super lube on it. What a difference when swapping gears. I also use a rag with old gas on it and clean the friction disk. Wipe all the black streaks off. Customer’s tell me they can’t believe it shifts so easy. Great videos!! I’ve watched a lot of them. Just like to see how other shops do things.. keep up the great videos! Thank you!!
Very well covered video JB only two things i suggest: 1. Check oil before running the engine you should see all the equipment we get in with engine damage or seized due to low or no oil 2. Check the electric starter to see if the mounting bolts are loose and use your electric starter regularly to keep it from rusting up on the threaded shaft we always lubricate this point annually. Grease is the most important thing we use a 00 grease in the gearbox and low temperature grease on the hex shaft and gear drives, spray lithium on chain drives. Well done sir!
Thanks a lot Wayne! LOADS OF GREAT TIPS HERE! Always know that I can count on you guys for great additional advice! Thank you for sharing! Thanks always for being cool fans! 👍
@@GarageGear Hey JB - would you be able to do a video (or maybe even a brief UA-cam short) regarding preventative maintenance on the electric starter that Wayne is talking about here on one of your newer Ariens? UA-cam seems to be lacking content for this very important item that should be regularly lubricated, especially on the Ariens AX motor. I found a few older videos on Techumseh engines but nothing for the Ariens AX. Thank you!
Hey JB! To be honest I have never used ethanol free gas in any of my small engines, ever. I treat my gas with Seafoam for the past 30 some years and never had running problems or dirty carburetors. I may just fill my gas can with some non-alcoholic gas to see if it makes a difference like people claim it does. The gas I left in my snowblowers was treated with Seafoam about 8 months ago and they both started up a couple days ago like they were just shut off! That's why I never bothered with the non-alcoholic gas. I treat my motorcycles, chainsaws and lawn mowers, etc. all the same. Keep up the great videos!
So stoked to make the "tribe" list in this video! As an East Coaster (Newfoundlander) that sees plenty of wet nasty snow, I can attest that all these pre-season maintenance checks are critical! We don't have E free gas here, and I know you have said you don't invest much in the gas stabilizer method. But, I can tell you from experience, Sta-bil is a solid product and will help with easy startup every season! We deal with a lot of temp fluctuations throughout the year. This Jan. alone we have had everything from +12c to -15c. With those fluctuations you never know when you might need a piece of equipment, so I keep it all ready to go! Nothing gets officially winterized. So I love stabil to keep my fuel toped up and ready to go at all times, in my bikes, snowblowers, and all my gas powered equipment! Thanks for all the tips and tricks man, love the channel!
Great list, and efficient presentation. Thanks for sharing this video. I was checking my Craftsman 1350 series blower for loose bolts on the handles and frame. It seemed "squidgy", but all the bolts were tight. That's when I discovered the crack in the auger housing, where you split the case to change belts. I am so glad I found this now, and not during the first blizzard. It was a decent day, so I just rolled my 110v flux core welder outside, fixed the crack, and bolted everything back together. Now I wait for Old Man Winter to show up!
Thanks Bob for the positive feedback! I appreciate it! Crazy that you found a crack in the housing and nice work fixing it yourself! 👍 thanks for sharing!
I’m enjoying your videos and have learned a lot about snowblowers! Never had one before, but I picked up a 1978 Gilson for free. Noticed after getting it running that the tunnel had a couple cracks in it. Little bit of welding, $30 carb, a little shave of the valve stems (flat head Briggs) and she works like a champ.
If you already have ‘grease’ in your gear box, is it ok to ADD 75W90 gear oil to the box or do you have to take it apart and clean all the grease out first? If anyone reading this knows the definitive answer too, please let me know as this video is a couple of years old and he likely may not see my question. Cheers. 👍👍
Great video JB, I took the advice and the advantage of the nice weather yesterday and changed the oil. I would like to check the belts but I bought this snowblower second hand and a bit worried if I start to remove things I might have a broken snowblower. I replaced the scrapper as well.
Hey Nick! Thanks for the positive feedback! I wouldn’t worry about taking the belt cover off to check the belts. It’s only two bolts usually. Once off you can get a good look at them! Do you know if the previous owner replaced them? Thanks for watching bud!
Question for you please. I don’t have fluid film but I have Blaster surface shield, not sure if it was a good idea or not but any exposed bolt, nut, screw I hit with some of the surface shield. Even the nuts that hold the wheels on I hit them with and then sprayed on the painted wheels. Does it make a difference if spray it on then wipe it around or just spray it on and just leave it? It’s not globbed on there or anything like that. I just did it like you do with wd-40 in the auger bucket, just spray it all around and just leave it. Would wd-40 be better than the surface shield on the painted surfaces or is neither needed since they are painted?
Great tips JB, any way you can do a checklist for getting a 2stroke snowblower ready for the winter season? You probably don't have one but I just picked up an Atlas 322 that I just fully restored. It's a awesome runner now since fixing it. Anyway just thought it would be a good video for us with single stage blowers
It's so much easier going over a machine in a nice clean well lit shop with a clean machine to work on. I run my machines thru my pressure washer and let them dry good before tearing into them. It's so much nicer to replace parts now then to have to do it in the dead of winter when you should be using it, not fixing it.
Thanks for the review. Yes, those Armer skid are great to have compared to the plastic ones that came with my snowblower. Great tips for the gas and battery fuel snowblower except my battery fuel unit has no engine maintenance requirements and just need to pop the batteries in and ready to go.
Late to the game here, but your thoughts on "alkylate gasoline"? At least here in Sweden we're recommended to use that instead of anything from the pumps. I think we can't even buy ethanol free gasoline here.. But maybe your ethanol free is the "same" as our alkylate?
Hey Chris I don’t believe they are the same. They don’t sell that here and I honestly don’t know much about it. I assume they sell higher octane or premium fuel by you. Many subscribers here use that.
Great vid, JB. Unfortunately, I'd have to travel over 3 hours to buy ethanol-free gas. Long Island (all of it) is considered the "Greater New York (City) Area" and well, you know how that goes....... So I have developed a system to deal with the ridiculous corn gas. I'll buy 93 octane and treat it with a mixture of Sea-Foam and Stabil 360. The treated fuel will last a month easy, but after that, the treated fuel gets drained from the machine and dumped into my truck. And it's back to the gas station for some fresh gas. It's a pain in the ass, but it's better than dealing with carb problems. After the season, the blower gets drained and filled with engineered fuel (TrueFuel) and I let it run on that for 5-10 minutes. It can then go to sleep for the summer. Anyone can overcome the ethanol problem, it's just a little more work....
3 hours holy cow!!! I can’t believe there’s nothing closer to you bud! I would think that in a populated area that you’re in there would be a pump somewhere. That’s crazy! Your smart for taking all those steps. Carb issues are a real pain. What kind of blower do you have my friend?
@@GarageGear Yeah. It sucks. I’m running a Troy-Bilt 3090. 357cc with an impeller kit. It’s a monster for the snow we get out here on the tip of LI. I had an old Craftsman II Trak-Drive with a 5hp Tecumseh that I ran for years. Hence my hatred for those engines. Lol
@@paulmysliborski4832 that Troy bilt sounds like a tank! That’s a lot of engine! I’ve worked on a few of those craftsman blowers before 😒 you’re in good company. 👍
I get ethanol free gas for my snow blower from Lowes....True-Fuel for four strokes....it is more expensive, but I believe a higher octane...They also have 2 stroke premix ready to pour I use in my weed wacker.
Those gear boxes won't last long using grease in them. Like you said, once it gets pushed off the gears (first 5 minutes of use) it's worthless. Run 80/90 weight gear lube (used in car differentials) which is what you are supposed to use in a gear case. I use synthetic which is even better.
JB I have an Ariens Deluxe 24 snowblower model #921024. I need a replacement friction disc. The Amazon link that you have provided links to A friction wheel that replaces old P/N 0170800 (now superceded by P/N 09475300) which is listed in Ariens parts diagrams for my machine. The Amazon description lists all the model numbers this disc fits, but mine is not on that list. I'm confused to say the least. Can you confirm that this friction disc will work on my machine? I enjoy your videos, and I have learned a lot about snowblowers that I should’ve known. I have a question about when removing the belly pan and tipping the snowblower on its auger. Did you drain the oil and the fuel out of the machine first or did you leave the gas and oil in the machine?
Hey Jeff when tipping these oil should be fine. Depending on where your gas spout is you’ll want to probably only have less than half a tank of gas inside before you tip it or some will leak out. 👍
@@GarageGear perfect, I just bought the Toro PowerMax 826 OHAE. I'm going to lube it up and use the rust inhibitor on it. Keep up the good work on the videos.

Hey JB. Doing my pre-season on my Ariens 8526. Sticker say model 932105. I had a shear pin break last year. Bought new ariens pins not aftermarket. The pin is the model # listed in the manual but will not fit because just past the threads, there's a tiny "flare" that steps up to the shaft size. Virtually every shear pin has this. The shear pin in my blower now does not have this "flare" and it will fit in either hole so there's not an obstruction or something. I'm really at a loss for what to do. I'm a subscriber, I've watched your channel for a long time, and I'm a local WNYer and I have to get this done before winter. Any suggestions?
Thanks for being a cool fan from WNY, Scott. I wonder if you could take a dremel and carve off that flare. I would say the sheer pin should be fine. See how that goes and let me know. Feel free to shoot me an email with updates.
Some of the Ariens are experiencing the spring breaking on the auger engagement controls. Check with a dealer/service to see if you should get a replacement.
I needed to see this video. I have several snow blowers and had many breakdowns during last winter. Shop cost added up. This video will help me lower repairs this coming winter
This video is awesome! Super in depth BUT you made it crystal clear. I’ve been following your advice on my snow blowers and I notice a HUGE difference in how much better they run off your advice!

@@GarageGear one question I have!! With in regards to the gear oil, how often should that be changed if ever? Should you change it every year or just top it off as needed if it’s ever low?
@@tannerc900 that’s a great question. I don’t have a specific time frame but I would say once a year if you use your machine a lot. Most people could get away with every couple of years but checking it is never a bad idea. I’ll be doing a video on this at some point soon. If you have a non serviceable gear box like I do on my newer ariens then all you do is add when needed on the top. Thanks for watching another my friend!
I’m new homeowner and really getting out on my own finally, dumb question how do i get rid out carb cleaner and break cleaner/part cleaner after using? Do i dump the liquid with used oil or what?

Yeah you never know what's around the corner weather wise. I also frequent that gas station as it's much closer actually to both of us. Enjoy the rest of the weekend buddy!
I have found the machines run the same on FRESH 87 to 91 octane gas whether it's ethanol free or not. The secret is using ethanol free on your last runs of the season therefore storing it with ethanol free gas.But to use ethanol free gas all winter is much more expensive
Great tips. I learned the hard way that lubricating the axle is necessary. My wheels are seized in so, hopefully i dont get a flat tire or the friction gear does not wear down. So far so good. This tlc saves a lot of money and peace of mind.
Hey Tom! Great question! Tilting the snowblower up like that is actually called the service position. Most snowblowers should not have an issue with leaks. Only seen one snowblower slowly drip oil from its spout when tipped up like that. If your concerned about it leaking. Drain the oil out and make sure there is little to no gas in the tank then tip it up. Should definitely not have an issue then. Thanks for watching!
Noob question. 3:38 Why are you greasing the shaft to the left of the friction disc? It doesn't look like it contacts anything. Really enjoying your videos! I got rid of a 2-stroke snowblower that clogged up with any wet/heavy snow. Just bought a new Ariens and I'm learning so much! I literally had to watch video on how to start it, just to make sure. Also! I've switched over to ethanol-free gas for all my machines! Heading to Home Depot now to pick up some grease and anti-seize!
Hey mountain, the friction disc slides left and right on that shaft. If there is no lubricant on it the disc can stick and make shifting difficult. Thanks for being a cool fan!

My hubby just died (didnt know much mechanics) and I was always the Quote-enquote mechanic But new to fuel and oil. How to fix this, in Alaska! Thanks for any help.... Karen Thought I'd put good stuff in to help the
Hey Karen! I believe what needs to be done is the following. Flush out the gas tank with regular gas to get all gas/oil mix out. Then take the carb off and give it a quick cleaning with carb cleaner. My guess is this should take care of it but I’ve never seen this before. Hopefully this is all that is needed and there is no permanent damage done to the engine itself. My guess is if you did this and got it running it would smoke for a little bit as it burns off the oil. If this seems a bit out of hand have a shop give it a look. Thanks for watching Karen!
Great video! I have the same machine. I am having problems with the drive spring. It wore out. I replaced getting read for winter and it broke again while testing it. It seems the disc by it is grinding through it. Have you had this problem?
hey JB when you turn the snow blower all the way on the front shoot (like you did in this video) do you have to make sure the gas & oil is empty so nothing runs out?
All great tips, especially the greasing of the axle shafts. So many people never think of that. If you can't get the wheels off easily that can make a simple repair a giant hassle. Looking forward to seeing that old Ariens blow some snow this winter!
Hey Smallblock! Thanks my friend! Got some new tires to put on that old monster! Video coming soon. Can’t wait to blast it with that thing! 👍 tons of content coming on it!
Just bought a used Ariens 28 deluxe SHO AX 306cc and it leaks gas from the carburetor when in service position. What can I do to fix this. Love the videos super helpful
Hey Anthony! I would start by checking your bowl seal. Could be deteriorating or out of place. I would also make sure your gas is shut off to your carb before tipping it. Let me know what you find. Thanks for watching.
Mine will puke out part of what's in the float bowl out of the overflow, so I usually shut the fuel off and run the engine until it dies before tipping it up. If you still lose fuel when you tip it up, it's worth looking at the bowl seal (there's still a little fuel left in the bowl after running it out) and at your fuel shutoff.

That's why I never bothered with the non-alcoholic gas. I treat my motorcycles, chainsaws and lawn mowers, etc. all the same. Keep up the great videos!
@@PainterD54 thanks for sharing your experience painter! Appreciate you my friend
ROCK ON DAN! Thanks for sharing how you maintain your equipment! Thanks for being a cool fan!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing my friend! 👍
If you already have ‘grease’ in your gear box, is it ok to ADD 75W90 gear oil to the box or do you have to take it apart and clean all the grease out first?
If anyone reading this knows the definitive answer too, please let me know as this video is a couple of years old and he likely may not see my question.
Cheers. 👍👍
I would try to add 00 grease

Blaster surface shield is very similar to fluid film and works great! I would say that surface shield would hold up longer! 👍
Hey Gary love the idea! My father has one I could maybe steal for it. I’ll see what I can do for this. Thanks for sharing the idea my friend!
It's so much easier going over a machine in a nice clean well lit shop with a clean machine to work on. I run my machines thru my pressure washer and let them dry good before tearing into them. It's so much nicer to replace parts now then to have to do it in the dead of winter when you should be using it, not fixing it.
Totally agree David! Thanks for sharing!

Calling for ALOTTA snow thiz winter. Thankz 4 the tipz!!!
You got it Mike!
The best thing is putting rubber wipes on the paddles. You will double the distance the snow will shoot.
Yep done many videos on that here on the channel! Works extremely well! Thanks for sharing!
It sucks.

Awesome Louie! You know how to roll! Get the good stuff! Enjoy your weekend my friend! 👍
Those gear boxes won't last long using grease in them. Like you said, once it gets pushed off the gears (first 5 minutes of use) it's worthless. Run 80/90 weight gear lube (used in car differentials) which is what you are supposed to use in a gear case. I use synthetic which is even better.
Thanks for sharing David! 👍

I have an Ariens Deluxe 24 snowblower model #921024. I need a replacement friction disc. The Amazon link that you have provided links to A friction wheel that replaces old P/N 0170800 (now superceded by P/N 09475300) which is listed in Ariens parts diagrams for my machine.

Is it a problem to tilt the unit up like you did to remove the belly pan? Will the oil drain out?

@@GarageGear Good. I’m going to place an order then. I read something about the possibility of needed spacers but I guess I will find out.
@@fingerlakeslawn depending on certain models you may need them but my guess is you probably won’t!
Great video as usual. Great way to start the weekend!
Thanks for the positive feedback Michael! Enjoy your weekend! 👍
Can you do the same video with a Ariens Rapidtrack platinum ?
Thank’s
Would love to! Want to send me a rapid track to work on? Lol
I got two Hondas. If one breaks I got another lol. Easy enough😊
Lucky you my friend! I would love to have a Honda! How old are they?
@@GarageGear 35. I traded my ariens deluxe 28 inch sho after 6 years of use for a nearly new Honda hss928 wheeled model. Paid $1200 for it 6 years ago. Kept it in mint shape and sold it for $1200. Used the remaining cash towards a Honda 928 wheels. Than I got a 1332 track Honda for $895 at a Honda dealer in near mint condition. Made in Japan
@@appleztooranges WOW! Outstanding my friend! Very cool!
@@GarageGear you think Honda is better than ariens? Quality wise?
@@appleztooranges that’s a great question! In terms of the engine Honda wins hands down! I’d say in terms of the frames they’re probably neck and neck. Both models are built to last! Your thoughts?
Fuel treatments are crap. Just check out Taryl's 2 year experiment. Most didn't do anything differently than reg gas w/o treatment.
Hey Tundra Guy! Good to hear from you again! I’ll have to check this out! Thanks for sharing!
Just bagged an old craftsman 11hp tecumseh 30inch from a scrapyard for free👌 new carb and belts, got er running and functioning perfect, now its time for paint
Awesome Jakk! You’ll have her all pretty before the season starts! Thanks for watching!
your videos will save me $1000s in the long run thanks so much!
You got it my friend! 👍
Me watching this with an Ego 24 electric knowing that I wont have to deal with any of this except for lubing the auger☺
@@KevinGonzalezBautista did you watch this video yet Kevin? ARE BATTERY POWERED SNOWBLOWERS MAINTENANCE-FREE?

what Engine did you put on that old Iron Ariens Snow Blower? It looks different from the one that was on there in previous videos.
Hey Northernflyer! I installed a predator 212cc engine on it! Here is a link to that video! BEFORE YOU INSTALL A PREDATOR 212CC ENGINE ON A SNOWBLOWER, WATCH THIS!

Hi JB, I see you’re holding up a set of 2390 Gates Belt's, are they the replacement belts for Ariens Pro OEM#-07200608 belts?
Those belts are for an ariens deluxe model.
Let's convert that cable chute to a crank handle
On which model?
I prefer sea Foam vs. Sta-Bl
Thanks for sharing Mike!
I went OCD on mine the last two days.
@@Tanner6-tp8nx your snowblower thanks you!
Good day. how would you lube the augers if they have no grease zerk fittings? Remove the shear bolt and try to just spray wd40 or white lithium grease in behind?
Hey Billy! I’ll be doing a video on this in the coming weeks. Yes you could remove the shear pins and spray some white lithium grease behind them. Wd40 will work too but not last as long. Thanks for watching!
How do you feel about transmission fluid in he gear box
@@bryansteen2219 that’s too thin. You’ll want something a little thicker like 00 grease
