Could Ukraine Have Made The 300km Tu-22 Kill With US AIM-260 Missile? (WarGames 217) | DCS

- Опубліковано 15 тра 2024
- Today we look at Ukraine's claim shoot down of a Russian Tu-22M3 Backfire last Friday. Most likely they used a modified S-200 surface to air missile. But we investigate whether it could have been done by a the US covertly supplying next generation AIM-260 air to air missiles to Ukraine.

@@Zoddom In vid description a few lines down.
@@grimreaperslove the videos, they make my week!
Will you guys be at fairford again this year??
Super Cap, et al. HELP. Not just myself, but the West. There are videos pertaining to things I have been working on that need to become reality. I saw the link to the CH site and have no response yet. I know he is busy, but I don't have a proper computer to play DCS now, let alone know how to mod it, and this is urgent. Real-life possibilities and the saving of lives. Some videos are out there, which are close to stumbling on my thoughts. I do not want to give it all away in public, but let me say that everything involved is already in your inventory, and it just needs a little cut here and there, and we will have something that will not only draw new and old fans with awe, but possibly influence the movers and shakers to make it happen. Reloading missiles at sea? Capacity? Worry no more. Imagine a machine that can defend a fleet with AT least 1,600 various instruments of defense and offense. About 2/3 defense and 1/3 in strike packages? Something impenetrable and lethal. A predator worth over a dozen Aegis class vessels.
How can I reach one of you? Any of you? I tried to reach Hollings to make an animation, but I think it would come to life better in DCS. Let's do something that can make a difference in real life!
@@grimreapers ^
Get ready for a visit from another US Intelligence Agency. They’ll be wondering where you got your information again.
It's DCS, all Russian models are inaccurate, otherwise the DCS developers would wake up one morning in a Russian interrogation room.
Also, its DCS, where everything is just bits on data, all their missiles, systems and aircrafts are in top condition.
It's just a S-200 with updated S-300 radars and guidance.
Why look elsewhere? If it was remotely US made russia would have gone ballistics on the news.
Did that happen previously?
The US Intelligence agencies would not waste their time on a bunch of amateurs who have no grasp on weapon systems or their correct applications.
So the usa intelligence agencies thibk they are the owner of intelligence? As human beings we are intelligent...they can kick rocks
No way. The AIM 260 is still not available for general use even within the USAF. I guess the Ukrainian AF will get some AIM-120C7 in the best case but not even the AIM120D.
why not give it a test in a real theatre?
some F15s flew with 260s in the 10s
@@oliverlee1998f22’s getting mechanical internal Bay upgrades for those 260s then it’s planned for 35s and planned for f15 cause they can hold them on wing points
It's not a recreation, they were having some fun and trying to see if the concept is legit
This is though how you would introduce a new weapon
Fun speculation but US would never risk the AIM 260 falling into Russian hands
Or gaining performance info from being shot at with it given the limited gain of a single plane possibly shot down
Only the most trusted and capable allies are getting the AIM-120D. So the Ukraine AF getting the AIM 260 is - with due respect - less realistic.
Btw initially planed launching platforms of the 260 are the F-22, F-35A/B/C and the,F-18E/F. The F-15EX will get certified later. Thus currently no word on the F-16C, F-15C/D/E yet.
And surely not any Mig29 or SU27 or SU24 etc.
the only way AIM 260 is used this fight is some secret squirrel F-22 launch over the sea of Azov where there's a very high confidence that the target will get killed and the debris will be in the drink
One suspects a Meteor would be more likely than an AIM-260. Firstly it is fully operational and secondly the UK have been known to give missiles to Ukraine and not announce them. The range is only listed as significantly more than 200km so potentially a possible shot. Though I feel modified S200 is far more likely.
It was likely a Patriot. They still have a few of them and they do have the range to hit it. Unfortunately people still don't understand Ukraine would need 10 times their inventory of every weapon system to have a real chance to beat Russia back. US simply doesn't produce enough weapons or munitions anymore. Big mistake killing the arms industry
I see Drop has read my comments and taken it upon himself to increase explosions on takeoff and landings. Good man!!
Seen! 😂
strider needed his own cockpit scene at the end, where he looks over to his radar screen then at a picture of someone back home, then back to the radar then back at the picture...then up at the HUD as he takes a deep breath muttering "i love you" then vectors on the SU35 ...2 missiles miss and he shouts "im too close, switching to guns" BOOM... TOTAL HERO!
16:51 I agree. I think 4th gen is still something to be reckoned with, especially if fielded in numbers and supported by advanced radars.
Yes, the data and sensor links from AWACS and F-35s will guide the missiles that gen 4 will launch. They will probably hang back just a little and go defensive right after launch.
The US and European 4 gen Jets are still better than anything china or russia has except maybe the J20 and Su35
Another great experiment! Awesome flying boys!
Finally! Someone that's not me crashing from road takeoffs! haha Love you Drop!

Personally, i think it was an accidental friendly fire incident. When I first saw a drawing of mig 29 in a warplanes book as a kid in the late 80s, I thought it just looked mean and sexy and fast. Its been my fav soviet era plane forever.
1980's F14D's AN/APG-71 upgraded AWG-9 radar was designed for 300+km bomber detection. Limited by retrofitting the limited nose antenna to the otherwise 700+km capable radar system.
That is detection, could it actually track a target at that range?
As cap said detection is one thing. A missile that can be guided that far against a moving target is a much more modern thing.
I am loving the random air to air anti-ship missiles. Very grim reaper esque lol.
Getting closer to getting up into the DCS air! Fun mission as always, especially with the take-off drills LOL! Video Valued by Valued Viewer - Fly Army! 🚁
Liked for that flawless take off sequence. Thank you for making it look so very, very easy. 💟
Flawless as ever.
Thank you Cap, excellent episode. I really enjoy your scenarios that are topical to the current news cycle.
Another great video Cap
I Love the inclusion of outtakes, its endearing.
Plenty of blooper material to work with in GR.
@@grimreapers team effort, right? 😉
Very impressive flying, chaps. Plenty of suspense and a lot of fun.
The APG-77 has an incredibly fast scan time across its 120 degree field of view and could detect aircraft from over 320 mi (515 km) away. The AN/APG-77 system itself exhibits a very low radar cross-section, supporting the F-22's stealthy design. The upgraded APG-77(V)1 may have an even greater range.
Agreed BUT could it Track targets at those ranges.
@grimreapers look like if it's non stealth, then yes
That battle at the end was great!
They probably used modified s-200 with extended range. There is no way they use aım-260.
Is it so unthinkable that the US might send one or two as "an equipment test" while congress was slow walking the aid package?
@@hanrockabrand95not unthinkable but very troubling politically and technologically if it lands and is identified/captured
@GlitchNectar Captured intact? 💯 agreed. That would be awful. But I'm imagining some CIA spook doing something off-book with just one or two missiles, and it would be something where they keep track of it every step of the way. I know missiles have the ability to self-destruct if they lose lock, so a remote kill switch in case of suspected compromise sounds plausible. But the risk/reward ratio for the whole operation is questionable.
Could a manpad reach it?
Probably more likely a drunken/scared ruskie AA operator. They've got form
The bomber is 500km from the line of the front. Even the s500 couldn't have reach out the bomber, and if it was a missile the bomber wouldn't have had a enigine fire
I'd love to see what would really happen to a jet if, on takeoff, the guy in front lit their afterburner that close.
oh pain would melt radomes would probably suffer some weakening. and possible ground stall the engines of the jets behind in line.
@@simba1113 simba talkin like he SEEN it before 😮😂

Ukraine hit it with a Photon Torpedo 🤣
Dunno what point you're trying to make, but the plane clearly got hit from the video.
So it's either Russian incompetence or Ukrainian competence. Your choice!
🤡
@RazorsharpLT I think his point is Romulan time travelers gave them the tech and that's gonna be a problem for the temporal prime directive.
most likely it was hit by a bout of bad maintenance, these big variable geometry supersonic bombers are mechanically unreliable at the best of times.
@@RazorsharpLT Bird strike caused an engine fire, pilots ejected which sent the plane into a spin

I have seen/heard various sources that some AIM260s have already been used. As well as some F-117s are still flying missions!
Seems like the F-117s might be being used to introduce pilots to how stealth tech screws with radar in practice, during training.
The f-117 is crazy. Still remember flying it in the sim in the 90ies, back when Russia was free and noone sane would ever believe if I told them it would turn into Mordor...

Bruh, stu moron, it was literally one of the worst times for Russia
6:30 just today I aknowledged, that the S-200 "Vega" ( the version UA has ) was able to to guide the missile at even 450km, but the missile itself is 250km range, officialy, 300km max., by other sources 285km... so yeah, if we are talking about the older radars that are known, they could see it coming. Not to mention they have now new modern radars which parameters are classified, so... Yeah, I wouldnt wonder if they are pretty comfortable to see these kind of "cows with wings" how they are joking about everything bigger than Flanker, at about 500km.

I do have to say what a amazing video, and absolutely GREAT FLYING!!! Big time! And it is not as shocking to me. You guys have gotten Really Really good at working together all as a team. You all know what each other are thinking, so you anticipate a lot! And that is the Sign as GREAT TEAM WORK, WITH A GREAT LEADER! The leader of any team or unit doesn't have to be the best at everything or anything for that matter! But the TEAM LEADER needs to know how to put the best team together, and be able to get each team member to work together! As One! Like a WOLF PACK! And then you have your Alfa! The Alfa puts the team together and keeps them together, all working together! And I just shared this video on my Public Platforms and SAID BEST DCS TEAM IN DCS!!! I started watching about 1.5 years ago, and in the last year I have seen the Improvement, but not like the last 3-6 Months! You CAP and THE TEAM OF GR have grown as a Team faster and become able to Work together as a TEAM like I have really never seen before. The TEAM has been on Fire! And I hate singling anyone out, but I have to give some good Credit to SIMBA! Guy is what I think one of the Best Pilots in DCS, if not THE BEST?!?!? But not only that he has help you get this TEAM to work as ONE TEAM! Not just everyone out for themselves and do what they want. You have the best TEAM on DCS! And to the TEAM, I 100% Believe you are very close to becoming the Best DCS TEAM out there. So congrats to the entire TEAM for acting like one!
Then while I was writing this I was wondering if there was any way you guys could get some kinda Team Tournament Game going like I watched you be the Moderator to one. They were Team BVR fights both having the exact same Jets with the Same weapons on the F-16. I would love to see you guys compete in some. Or even some competitions here and there between just the GR TEAM. I know you have done that, but I don't think with the same exact equal jets! So I just figured I would throw it out there, I would find it interesting. Plus it's always good Practice! THANKS TEAM GR FOR A GREAT VIDEO!!!!
I’m fairly certain that the Aim 54C Phoenix missile that used to be carried on F-14 Tomcats in the 1980s could do that too.
I believe the official longest verified shot was only 117 miles if memory serves.
54c only rated to 184km not 300
@@TabTa6 What its rated for and its max distance are two different things, no?
@@TabTa6 Ok I did some research and 100nm is the publicly stated range, while the actual range for the missile is still classified, which says to me that the actual max range is much greater than the stated range. And as a side-note, I find it ironic in the extreme that the official max range for this missile has remained classified to this day, despite the fact that Iran is the only country that is still employing the use of the F-14 Tomcat and the Phoenix missile! You would think they would release that information now since it is already in the hands of our enemies.
@@BrentLeVasseur sure but 50% farther?
I wonder if they have assets closer in or maybe some kind of drone sub carrying AA? They seem to be achieving some odd kills.
That was GREAT!!!!!
Cap, how do you manage to set the FARP up so that you and your wonderful humans are able to take off from a road in that area of the map? I don't know if I have an outdated map version (running most up to date version of DCS), but all I have in that part of the map is an open empty field. You're a wizard! Love the video, keep up the excellent work
Very cool👌
How on earth did you manage to lose a RN ship? the King will not be amused!
This! Justice for the HMS Ariadne!
Yes, can confirm that it was a US made AIM-260 missile. My personal psychic on retainer saw it in her crystal ball.
Cap and crew. Have you ever considered doing a dynamic campaign with D&D DM? Like create your character in the 90s world, and the D20 rolls would ascertain armaments fuel and even jet allocation. Then, load into DCS where the DM has created a scenario for you to survive?
some how I would end up with the flying boat.
I'd love that kind of things, but who is going to want to watch it?
It could be a side channel for the D&D section. Main channel for the flight?
I'm happy to brainstorm with any of your leaders
i think meteor against a large bomber could reach out a similar distance under perfect launch chacteristics
also modern radars are likley to be able to detect a bomber sized target at those kind of ranges
Good point on 4th Gen tech as a "world standard", and still applies, especially if they continue to upgrade them anywhere they can. 5th gen is great in their role, but 4th gen still kicks ass too.
they did it presumably with S200 linked to Patriot and/ or Iris T System so called FrankenSAM
It was not even a "shot down" it was a technical malfunction..and the Tu-22 crashed 600km from the black sea away... also there were no shrapnel damage at the crashed wreck
stop saying real facts!,!
Is that what Russian media told you?
Coping hard I see
The US always has an AWACS over the Black Sea. The AIM 120 is data link capable (an aircraft can lock and fire on a target provided by the AWACS without the launching aircraft having radar active). The AIM 260 would also have that capability. There would need to be some cockpit addon to integrate the data link and missile targeting system. Not impossible.
They could probably whip up a data link capability between patriot radar or command vehicle and the AIM 260. It would make sense since AIM 260 might eventually be used in a ground to air system, like the NASAM using AIM 120
Bro it aint even in service
@@darkassassin4166 Bro, things get tested before they enter service. Ukraine has basically been a war college and equipment testing ground.
@@Texas240 oh yes because the americans would want to risk the aim-260 falling into russian hands and getting reverse engineered
@@darkassassin4166 - So, by your logic, neither the Americans nor any US weapons customers would ever fire an AIM 260 at a Russian jet...

@@Texas240 If it ain't in service it can't be fired it was most likely an upgraded S200 site that downed the TU-22
The clouds- "The Simpsons." lol
Poland deliver quite number of different AA system Including Modernised S-200C Wega that theoretically can reach this target
I would think no way USA would risk the technology of that missile getting stolen
some awacs models have a radar that can range to more than 300km
The 2 main theories are that it was hit and was leaping to a air base before it went down and the other which has more credibility is that russia shot its own bomber which there is a track record of them doing friendly fire with trigger happy low experience AA operators
There is absolutely 0 chance for friendly fire, there is no way to mistake it for something else on radar and friend or foe must have been on.
UA took out multiple radars in crimea to bait the A-50 closer to the frontline for RU to retain full radar coverage, it was in range and got shot out of the sky, end of the story.
I will add that there is no such thing as an inexperienced AA operator in russia, it is considered one of the most vital role and they suffer very low attrition.
The other one is that the Tu-22 is an old airframe and had many issues. As these old planes get more flight hours some will not make it back.
Есть много видео о том что ту-22м3 летел с пожаром двигателя, без внешних повреждений.
Ukraine took a few oil rigs in the black sea a few months ago. No clue where though!. I wonder if they were used as a platform or something - who knows, clearly least of all me!. Fantastic content as always gr!
Eagle dynamics should add Arma three and drones into the game.
If we sre doing weird missile stuff then you should do the air launched Patriot.
Why didn't you go after the cruise missiles? Where did they hit? Did they achieve their objective? As always a nice video. Thank you and keep up the good work.
It was a fake cruise missile, actually hit a hidden ship in the Sea. Wasn't really part of the roleplay todaty.
Aerial combat is somehow turning into a game of American Football/Rugby now
I come for the flying, I stay for the banter and
Media stated it was a s300
Hey cap’ with the news about Argentina getting those 26 F16s, you should do a video about how the flight of typhoons based in the falklands would fair against them if attacked.
They already did it: look back through the uploads to 23 November 2023
Trying to think of something new to do with that, that we havn't done before.
@@harryspeakup8452 i get they did the Falklands but now they can do it as if real, the real amount of F16s and typhoons also weapons.
Cap: we are to good at this...
Me: taking off in this mission...landing on Jersey in the last 😂😂
awkward...
Hi Cap big fan here, wargame idea what if the US withdrew into isolationism, could the Japanese self denfense force defend mainland Japan from a full scale Chinese naval attack using only their air assets and sam network without any help from the US
Literally doing this now :)
They claimed it was an SA-5, S200 the US wasnt providing them with anything fancy at the time.
It might have been hit closer and just limped back quite a bit.
i suppose friendly fire or a simple malfunction....the backfireS are very very old planes
6000 mtrs is near as damn it, 20000 ft
That flat spin on the vid was cruel.
Isn't it crazy how bad the Russian military is actually performing in Ukraine? The Ruskies thought it would be a walk in the park.
Lol nazi had thought they were in Crimea summer 23
@@glovemaker2 that english is so bad i can't figure out whether ur pro ukraine or pro russia
All the western support of ukraine and you expect Russia would easily crush ukronazis ?
@@MH-je3htI see trust argument made constant and I don’t understand it, because the Russians had at least a month, if not more, of delayed NATO and other allied reactions. A nation such as Russia, which presents its self as a first rate power should have at least regional dominance in Eastern Europe, especially with a nation literally on their boarder, but they were unable to successfully subdue Ukraine in the timespan before NATO support arrived. Hell it was even more time before significant contributions of weapons arrived. Would Ukraine have lasted this long without western support, no, but is Russias inability to successfully invade a nation on their doorstep (when they claim to be a first rate military power with at least European dominance) in the timespan before significant western support arrived an embarrassment, most definitely.
@@MH-je3hti mean, yeah? They couldn’t even take air superiority at the start of the war lmao
I see many possibilities.
Submarine launched surface to air missile.
Stealth aircraft launched and then guided by AWACS or even satellite.
I would think the more likely reality is Friendly fire from the SA or bad IFF.
f-14 tomcat maximum stand off interception is 314km
Wanna see a Hybrid of the 260 with meteor for the second stage.
I think its HIGHLY unlikely that US sent AIM-260. For the most part, the only stuff US has been willing to part with is borderline obsolete (by US standards) equipment. And the cases that break that, they send last Gen variants. PAC-3MSE is the only modern high end thing US has sent. But the core of the system(the radar & fire control suite) are a few gens back. What's more, they wouldn't want AIM-260 fired into Russian territory for fear of it being recovered & studied.
China and Russia probably already have something better to reverse-engineer (Meteor) after idiot Biden pushed Saudi Arabia into the arms of China.
Aoa rolls are wild
sometimes its good to not explain every single move we make
That's literally the worst nightmare for any enemy, give Su-27 with AIM-260 imagine a meteor AAM
oh no thats just the J16 with 4 PL17s.
Currently Australian RAAF E-7 (Boeing 737) AWACs are flying the currant NATO Ukraine perimeters and the E-7 are one of the worlds best AWACs far surpassing the current NATO E-3 that even the US is purchasing this aircraft in the future.
With AESA Phased Array and a very modern Network centric capability into the US command structure I wonder if it was used in the targeting node.
The 7 is a brilliant platform, incredible technology. I definitely think it’s giving info and potentially guiding weapons as you said it absolutely has the fidelity to do so
i mean this would be perfect for testing a new missle lol
A drone carrying ManPads could do the damage. But getting it in place for long enough is another matter.
They actually said the kill was made via a modified S200
SU-34 rains FAB-1500 on the front line but what gets shot down is 300+ km ( said to be 450+ km) bomber ?? doesn't make sense tbh
Su-34s are also getting shot down tbf.
and those Tu-22Ms do launch cruise missiles against cities inUkraine. whenever you see a russian missile attack onto cities west of the front, they come from Tu-95s, Tu-160s MiG 31s and, of course, Tu-22Ms
They come in just above treetops and only get up to necessary altitude to drop the FAB's the very last moment. Hard to detect them
@@cockatoo010 Since the russians started targeting SAM sites with Tornado-S MLRS and Iskanders, any su34 or 24 has been shoot down in a month
Possibly Su-34 is not considered a High Value Target? Reserved for AWACS and Strategic bombers?
@@roli4040 Are you high? Even is yes, Su-34s fly even higher than you. You've obviously not even seen 1 of the dozens of Russian clips featuring Su-34 pairs releasing quadruplets of UMPK fitted FAB-500 and FAB-1500 from above the clouds.
They could have launched a S-200 from an aircraft and used the ground based radar for targeting
Why your mig is beeping?
More likely they used an old Phoenix with upgraded avionics.
Here is an idea for GR:
While we wait for the Kola Peninsula map, could you do a wargame involving Russian, Norway, and potentially Finland and Sweden using the South Atlantic map? We could have the southern tip of Chile be Northern Norway, with the Southwestern coast of Chile being the west coast of Norway and the Southeasternmost point of Argentina being Russia
As an add on: the mouth of Kola bay where Severomorsk is can be roughly equated to the location of "Cmte. Portillo" in Argentina
my question is how would a cutting edge missile which nobody has an unclassified photo of be compatible with obsolete soviet era airframes or at best some F16s from the 1980s.
How would ukraine even be able to track a bomber 300km out with their ancient FCR on their fighters.
Could it be an AIM-54?
This may sound crazy, but what about a HARMS?
@grimreapers Holy moly that constant double beeping tone is obnoxious. I had to fast forward during the non-combat section. If possible, would you please turn it off during ferry/non combat next time?
Ukraine said the Tu 22 was on its way back to base after launching his missiles when they got him, so an even more extreme shot than the one simulated there
It must be something launched on top of S-200 missile. Judging by the fact that it doesn't do much damage to the target this "something" have a small warhead and judging by AWACS downing video this warhead have IR-guidance.
So... sounds like some regular A2A missiles riding on top of S-200 with combined guidance system (radar-guided initially, IR-guided on terminal phase).
Which is exactly what Ukrainians said: new weapon made of parts of old weapons.
PAC-4 Skyceptor has range of 350km
Ukraine don't have a launch platform for AIM-s, Soviet fighters are incompatible with US air-to-air missiles,
but they can use a AGM-88 from a Su-27 or Mig-29 , TU-22 have radar so in theory AGM-88 can kill anything with a working radar .
Successful on the first try!!
I highly doubt the AIM-260 scenario. Classification would not allow the missiles to be transferred.
I remind that Zelinsky claims to have a Sea Baby drone that carries and fires a SAM. Could that have killed the Backfire?
maybe but idk if a little boat is a good launch pad
How can you remove the radar without changing the CG?
By taking some other piece of equipment off the back end
you would change the CG but also you would place weight in the aircraft to give it a control able CG,
Very entertaining. I might have to eat a pizza; I planned to eat that pizza in advance.
23:00 Who fired the Sea Cat??? lol Whats a Royal Navy Leander HMS Ariadne doing there?...she was sunk in 2004 as a hulk by Chile lol I suspect its how Cap got the TU-22 to fire its missiles lol
I did wonder what that was all about...
lol yeh I had to hide a blue ship in there to get the Tu-22 missiles to fire. You weren't supposed to see that.
Cap loves the grass
Did you not put the protagonist missile on a Mig31 because Ukraine don't have them?
Correct, Ukraine does not have the Mig-31
So the MiG 29 was up and intercepted the TU-22 before it reached its target and fired?
No the Tu 22 crashed in russia 600km from the claimed "shot down" are in the black sea
