  • Check out this awesome 1984 In-car action from Sandown Park in Australia as Rothmans Porsche 956 driver Johnny Dumfries winces under under the incredible G-forces acting upon him through the tight and twisty bends of Sandown Raceway!

    The 1984 Sandown 1000km was Australia's first ever FIA World Championship event; An endurance motor race staged at the Sandown Raceway in Victoria, Australia on 2 December 1984.
    It was the eleventh and final round of the 1984 FIA World Endurance Championship and was the first FIA World Championship race to be held in Australia.
    The race included Australia's only two World Drivers' Champions. Sir Jack Brabham (1959, 1960 & 1966) and Alan Jones (1980) both participated as part of the factory backed Rothmans Porsche team. The race was Sir Jack's first and only World Championship race since the 1970 Mexican Grand Prix, though between 1970 and 1984 he had been a semi-regular competitor in Australian touring car racing.

    People generally don't understand that driving cars like this was/is physically demanding.
    It's more than just turning the wheel and pressing pedals.
    Of one of many physical demands, brake pedals required hundreds of pounds of foot pressure.

      F1 drivers from 1986 lost the same amount of weight after the race as today (3 kg), purely from the lack of power steering, extremely bumpy tracks, manual gearbox, severe acceleration and ofcourse the 5 ish Gs of force

    This is quite a rare and curious occurrence?
    The wearying thing is that these cars didn’t have the luxury of today’s data acquisition solutions and strategies. No doubt these cars were physically exhausting and equally a mental drain, but to be able to capture the maneuvers of the car relative to driver input against a heart rate monitor would have given some perspective.

    It is the G forces causing his wincing. You just can’t tell from the video, because they’re using a wide angle lense on the camera, which widens out the appearance of the turns. However, it’s also the amount of braking force he is having to apply to the brake pedal that is causing his wincing. Race cars typically do not have power brakes. This is because you have more “feel” and control of the brakes without power brakes. And if you use the correct braking technique, you can literally stand on the brakes with all your might, and the front wheels will not lock up. This is actually how you are supposed to brake, but it is extremely physically demanding.

  • @MigluGamer
    @MigluGamer 5 років тому +31

    That groaning is not from the G's, it's from the heavy steering. Notice that he groans way before the highest G's and stops groaning at the apex even though the G's are highest there. It's just that the he has to steer hard before the apex and efter that he's just letting the wheel center slowly. Also no racing car makes that high G's and in such a direction that you'd groan. They're no fighter jets.

    • @TheInsaiyan
      @TheInsaiyan 5 років тому +13

      modern formula one cars tho. I bet they dont groan but push breathe occasionally under hard braking and long corners like you do when you work out, to stabilize the neck.

      I raced F2000 a couple years, and I caught myself “groaning/wincing” on several occasions. Particularly on high G turns where the elevation change in the turn, or at the APEX, caused momentary high G’s (I.e. Turns 16a/16b at VIR, Turns 1, 5 and 12 at Road Atlanta, the “UpHill” and “DownHill” at Lime Rock... etc.). And I wasn’t pulling anywhere near the G’s that these Ground Effects cars, or F1 cars were pulling. I assure you, it’s more physical than you think! The “groaning/wincing” is a lack of physical conditioning. This, my friend, is precisely why they call Motor Racing a “Sport.”

    • @justinlafever5653
      @justinlafever5653 3 роки тому +2

      Just for context: F1 cars can *snap* 9 lateral G’s, and sustain 3-3.5 lateral G’s. The car in this video, which had “Ground Effects,” was capable of very similar lateral G’s. Also keep in mind the wide angle camera lense in this video also “widens” the appearance of the turns. In reality, these turns are much sharper.

  • @youtubemodsaresnowflakelef7692

    These cars were something else to ride in. The heat alone would make most of you quit. So basically you're sitting in a sauna while wearing a racing suit and helmet, gloves, etc.
    Then you have to wrestle this beast around the track and try to be fast while still keep track of cars around you. Race car driving is extremely physically demanding. Especially in those cars.
    You need real strenght in your arms & shoulders to steer the car. You need a strong leg to brake properly. You need a strong neck (and the stamina to keep doing it) to keep your head straight when going into corners fast, to keep your head level when you're braking hard, so you can see what's going on and when to turn the car in (because I shit you not, it will try to force your head down towards your lap).

    Thank goodness for the fitness regimes that race car drivers do today. You need alot of arm strength with no power steering, especially with the large contact slick tire patch that adds more resistance on the surface. I driven some race machinery, everytime you turn the steering its like having a workout with
    "Arnold ". It's all in the name of saving weight by removing power steering.

    He is fighting the steering wheel so hard that he is groaning. It is a hot day and when drivers in the late 70´s and around the 80´s where saying they where fighting for there lifes here is what they ment. There wasn´t that much fitness program as there is today. They had to fight all the weight of the G-forces that was penetrating the front axis of the car with just that steering wheel. Go to your local race track, or whereever you could drive very fast and smash the car as quick into the corners as possible. Mind you that you have power steering and all that kind of stuff. Than imagine that 4 times stromger without power steering and doing this all over a weekend.

      Yes, no power steering. The G forces can be quite high in these machines although it wasn't G forces alone that were causing him to groan like that. I wager he was probably nursing some injuries before he got into the driver seat of that vehicle. Moderately high G forces coupled with back,rib or neck injuries can be quite painful. I'm not if you've ever seen the video of Jeremy Clarkson injuring his neck while driving the Nissan GT-R around Motegi. He didn't crash or anything, he went around a corner while at high speeds and when he exited the corner, his neck suddenly "went out".
