- 60fps upscaled clip of the 1973 Targa Florio (please watch in 1080p60 / 720p60). Original footage is from Archivio Nazionale Cinema d'Impresa (CIAN). I added sounds to the video as the original film was silent.

This footage is stunning. Like it was shot yesterday..
That's why film is still superior than digital. It stands the test of time and can always be remastered to the latest video resolution.
@@SkylineGTRB26 this particular one was resized from a digital copy
Especially when compared with those shity footages from the 1980s
@@user-zv8qg1co4z easy to fix, but no one here is wiling to pay for the hours in post-production needed to tweak those colours, but believe me, in the hands of colourist, this footage will become stunning!
@@ReelLifeCanada tbh once it's digital it'll cost you a minute to do it yourself, then render it
No terrible music, no awful voice over, no stupid editing. Just amazing cars and fabulous sounds. A great snapshot of a special event. Kudos to you.
Lol. The sound isn't origonal
@@nige5572 real? I think so
@@mistytires3346 When the cars drive by where the camera is you notice the sound doesn't fit.
Still who edited this video did a fantastic work

Incredible to see sports prototypes mixing it with GT and sportscars: the Targa was a seminal event and the World is a poorer place for its absence.
Massive credit to you for posting this. Love
Start sequence is amazing.. high quality for 1970's Italy. But is gets out of sync in the later part, which is sad. Would be nice to match the brutal noise to a car.. thumbs up for the upload tho
im just happy i get to see something from a time where my dad wasnt born yet
Yeah, I would have put more effort into this video if only i had known this video would get so many views... Sadly now there's nothing I can do to improve the quality.
It's still good.. not many like it
@@formula6033 You can still do an enhanced version and link it in the description. This video seems to be taking off, and the time is ripe. A year from now may be too late. :-) Thank you, regardless. This is a classic.

Amazing, I’ve always been on the search for good Targa footage. Thanks!
Bellissimo! Grazie infinite per questo straordinario documento da guardare a bocca aperta dall'inizio alla fine!
The word "epic' is over used, but , ya.......whoever had this footage, you are a god.
Hard to believe you added the sound. Awesome job!
Incredible footage!! thanks for posting!
Amazing Work.....!!!

Wow this quality is unreal.
La più bella è sempre la Stratos! Grazie per averlo pubblicato
60fps is a gift to video recording
You did an amazing job on the sound! You totally had me fooled!
I am speachless once again. How do you get such quality? I have lots of VHS that I captures onto the computer using various methods, never got that quality and smoothness. Wow.
have you tried motion interpolation
I dunno about the topic but in this case i think they have remastered starting from the original film
Looks to me this isn't tape but film....big difference in quality between those two.
Yes, this is definitely film (probably 8mm). It was re-scanned using modern technology. You can't do something like that with VHS since it's a magnetic support. Tom Scott did a very very informative video about this, look it up!
Film would actually make sense. I've started back in early 2000s to record TV and VHS on computer using Hauppauge PVR-350, which costed quite some money, with relatively good result. I've moved then to those USB "boxes" with less success, before moving to another box whom I forgot the name, which gave me reasonable results, but no way near what I see here. Surely as it was written, it must have been captured from actual film. Amazing
That PB just sounds so glorious! Flat-12 ftw!
Dude this is awesome
Nice job done regarding audio mate!
A purity and beauty lost to health and safety, the spirit lives on in the Isle of Man TT

You have to have driven on Italian streets yourself, to really get the grasp of how fast these cars are going. This is really good.
I would have loved to have been there.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! Fantastico!
Oh my ..... nothing more needed...
Purely phenomenal
Autos viejos pero que maravillosos que son , el sonido de los Alfa una sinfonia

Is this smoothened with modern day tech? or did they record it at 60 fps?
Racing fans loved being close to the action like that because there was always that remote possibility that you could become part of the action! Or see a spectacle up close! Yeah, Baby!

I wonder how Lewis and co. would have dealt with this ... or, rather, not have dealt with it.
Ok boomer
Where do we stop? Let's include Schumacher and Senna. Both from at least a generation later than this footage. The current Lewis would probably not be willing to drive in these conditions because of safety concerns. As for driver quality. He would probably annihilate the field. The mental and physical prowess of current drivers is much higher than those of the past.
@@PjotrStroganov : How does one determine, objectively, "mental and physical prowess"? I agree that it is amazing to behold modern F1 drivers' abilities to multi-task ... adjust brake balance, engine mapping etc., mainly because the cars are so much easier to drive. Those early F1 cars were dogs to drive ... even by the admission of Lewis he would not be able to race those cars. While Lewis is certainly highly talented, I would not assume him to be able to "annihilate the field". In my opinion, you can only determine true ability if all competitors are in equal equipment, in the same environment. That, for obvious reasons, is not possible.
I chuckle every time when I hear the radio footage of a driver complaining that "the car won't grip", or something similar. They simply have no clue. The likes of Lauda, Senna, Hill, Stewart would actually advise the mechanics on how to rectify what they are feeling. Those guys could make ordinary cars go very fast and be able to drive beyond the limit. That I consider to be "mental and physical prowess".
@@PjotrStroganov HAHAHA!
That is helmut marko right, in the alfa? Nice job at remastering!
I think that's Rolf Stommelen. Thank you for watching my video!
@@formula6033 Yep, Stommelen.

When racing was still dangerous. For spectators in the first place ;-)
Sorry to be technical but that red things a beast make a car that sounds like that tesla

This is in the days when motor racing was dangerous. They were great times when you could get up close to the action, if you were happy to take the risk.
wow.
Purtroppo troppo pericolosa
Al Gore would not approve (unless he was somehow profitting by it...) :-)
This is so cool yet its kinda disturbing to me
I loved the video but the audio editing left me underwhelmed. Sad since that’s one of the main attractions to this video.
Minchia.. Questo video ha la mia eta.. Bei tempi, poche leggi e poca tecnologia..
To the uploader: I recommend getting this sent in to a 4K enhancement expert. They probably won’t even charge you to do it. They’d colour correct it, shadow/highlight/contrast correct it and make it look like it was filmed today. I don’t think I’ve ever seen better, more crisp footage of the TF, so it would be extremely historically relevant to have that done.
OP sourced this from an already digitalized source and an UA-cam upload (see description). It is not like he has access to the actual physical film reel so what can be done is pretty limited.
Looks like it has already been pushed pretty hard with color correction tbh
@@deggis4 in this UA-cam comment section; people who don't read descriptions
Looks , and sounds fabulous.
AI upscaling is a better option
This is amazing footage that truly documents the end of an era. It seems somehow symbolic that the Alfas and Ferraris all failed and it was the modified Porsche Carrera RS that ran out the winner.
The Ferraris with big wings and low ground clearance just looked so out of place on a track with bumpy surfaces and tight corners.
The winged track cars were faster, but unfit to the bumpy roads, and retired in the first laps. The Stratos that arrived second had no problems, but it had at least 25hp power gap (not required in rally races) in respect to the Porsche.
Nothing else was like the Targa, or ever will be again.
thanks to God...
I hope it never does especially with modern machinery at least 30 people won't make it
@@jcoast1 why
I see it every year in Italy, even better cars than in this video.
@@carlosmpsenyorcapitacollon6977 Because it's incredibly dangerous to have races like these. Even in those days.

RattleSnake Well the vacuum cleaners are faster.🤗
The vacuum cleaner sound pretty good imo
Not that these cars sounded like that anyway, since the original film was silent!
@@davidgoodchildcouk Maybe the film was silent, but the sounds added are very close to what they actually sounded like. There are lots of videos of most of these cars being driven around nowadays with sounds
@@davidgoodchildcouk yes its dubbed
An event like this could only have been held in Italy and it was the last gasp of the spirit of the Mille Miglia that drove it.
IOM TT.
@@timboness1 Yeah but I was thinking of cars with spectators crossing the track etc.
In Italy ordinary folks drive like that as a matter of course. I’m personally convinced that the lines on the road are actually no more than “ trend” information...
@@shiekyerbooti4068 "trend information" - LOL - I like it.
At the same time they were still racing the Tour de France, a very similar race through narrow country roads and small towns.
The mix of cars all racing together on a road track is what racing is all about. Never to be seen again.

You can see it at Goodwood, or Monterey historics but it's not quite the same.
Can only be compared with the Isle of Man TT.
But people still have balls to run in TT, but not for the targa florio
@@MrGembelo the problem with targa florio is because the fans were dying and not just the pilots(like group B), in TT most of the time only the pilots get hurt or die

@@user-zv8qg1co4z The whole point of this is that it's NOT safe. If you're going to remove the danger from something dangerous then it just becomes another procession....which is pretty much what all Motorsports is today.
@Elon Musk the entire Irish Road Racing series does. But they are mass start events on public roads rather than the TTs time trial format. The North West 200 is allegedly the fastest motorbike race there is with speeds exceeding 200mph (190mph if it rains).
That little Alfa grille is absolutely adorable
WOW WOW WOW!!!!!!!! Amazing footage. When you remember what the average family car was in those days it would have been incredible to see some of those cars at speed. Remember also that practice in the days leading up to the race was with local traffic. The roads only closed for the actual race.
Frame rate is the best ive ever seen
@@dancearoundtheworld5360 True i didnt even think of that. 50 fps perhaps. They knew what they were doing. My LEICINA super 8 will do 50 but you run out of film in 3 min. This looks like 16mm
