Ahhhhh Derick and the 956, pure perfection. Love the old 12 cylinder 917 series Porsches and the 956 turbos, the sheer power and speed and 40 years ago without all the new computers, sheer driver skill. Great video thanks for sharing
If you find the videos on here from 1950s & early '60s races you will find the course was much better then. The current course is from a later era where they turned straights into esses & added chicanes to slow them down. They also trimmed off & flattened mounds where the cars once got airborne. And whoever made the decision to do away with the original start/finish/pit area with it's ultra-fast, side by side, opposite direction straightaways, should be locked for life in a mental institution.

Welcome to Porsche! I have worked on them since 1972. See the Evo car on the same track video! The movie is not sped up, the car is fast. Porsche was involved in aviation and military designs in his early career. See his history, from a time when everything was new. No computers or CAD, all slide rule, talent and concept men. There were so many brilliant designers and concept men in his time, too many to list. Each Furman Carrera 4 cam engine, a masterpiece of engineering, took a master mechanic 150 hours to build one engine at the factory. TLC, all by hand. The G50 964/993 transmission was by far a beautiful, functional, high quality brilliant design for the street cars and was my favorite. Porsche patented tortion bar suspension, synchromesh in transmissions. I am a Porsche Master Technician 1995' and also a licensed aviation mechanic. The Hindenberg Zeppelin used Maybach Diesel engines, taking the contract from Mercedes. The engineers designed exhaust gas through an exhaust gas condensation radiator to take on water to exactly balance fuel burned maintaining a weight and balance that was nearly perfect.
I know he said the 956/962 was his favourite racing Porsche; you knew it wouldn't break so you knew basically if you were in the lead at the Le Mans you just had to not be silly and drive it and you would win. By the way; here's it being pushed in a race, still smooth. ua-cam.com/video/yKYj-nZGewk/v-deo.html
Respect to Stefan Bellof. Remembering "In car 956" which gave me a better understanding of what the driver must endure as seen from the cockpit of one of these beasts.
956! Fantastic car. Derek Bell! What an all round top bloke. Nurburgring! Most dramatic track in the world. All three! Heaven. Loved how some of the track seemed to come back to him and he really seemed to be getting into the groove.
Hi Marius, I have just watched this wonderful footage of Derek Bell paying tribute to the much missed Stefan Bellof. Absolutely wonderful, thank you so much. I never had the honour of meeting Stefan but did meet Derek back in the mid 1980s (1984/1985?) at a WSC race at Brands Hatch, attended by my dad and I Had a brief chat with him and got a book signed. Derek is a true gentleman. We also saw both Derek and Stefan racing in the WSC in 1984 and 1985 at Brands Hatch and Silverstone. Stefan was a true star in the making in WSC and F1 (surely a future F1 Champion) and is truly missed. I can still remember hearing the news of Stefan's passing after I had returned from a British race meeting at Snetterton on 1/9/85. Tragic...
What I didn't know is the fact, that at that day where Bellof set this record, the driver Jochen Maas was just 3 or 4 second slower. That car is a legend.
Tristan Theuerkorn well 3-4 sec is still a good 1 sec per lap on a “normal” sized circuit, so Bellof was in the zone during his lap. No disrespect to Mass, Ickx, Bell, or the others, they’re great drivers too. 956 is an absolute legend.
@@jstoli996c4s Bell was sharing the car with Bellof and he only drove a few practice laps in it, including the ones for _"In Car 956"._ Ickx was sharing with Jochen Mass that weekend. Bell Still managed a 6:41 with the camera.
What a treat! Bell seemed to be a home in that car! Great video. Years ago, I saw Bell in Trois-Rivières Grand Prix and it seemed that he was flying on that circuit!Thank you for this great video!
The incredible thing that surprise me every time I watch videos like this is the behavior like scoolboy of the pilots (in this case great pilot like Derek Bell) when engeneers give them instruction about the car and how to manage the ride on track. Legendary racing car Legendary Pilot
AMAZING. So fant astic to see a driver reunited with their car. And driving it how it should be driven. Quite taken at how Derek remembered every curve of the track...brilliant
Between Karussell and the mini Karussell it looks like he starts to get muscle memory back from deep in his brain and it all starts to be more fluid and faster. Kudos Derek and RIP Stefan. 2 great drivers.
It must be difficult for a driver to keep his professionalism while driving. To see all those people at Brunnchen, and know every eye was upon you it would be difficult not to fall prey to the moment and lose concentration. I read a quote from Jackie Stewart where he would recite a sort of mantra to prepare before the race, "No sense of occasion, no sense of occasion." To remind himself to stay professional and concentrate upon the driving and not upon the excitement of the spectacle.
Reading MotorSport magazine once, I will never forget Derek Bell describing what it was like at over 200MPH whilst it was 'Raining Stair-Rods'. I still wonder what this must have been like... but as the driver of a Renault Scenic, I don't suppose I will ever find out!
Such an Honour to have Sir Derek Bell to drive this Legendary PORSCHE 956 #02 to commemorate Stefan Bellof's >>> 6Mins 11Secs + Lap of Nurburgring in 1983! May Stefan Bellof be Blessed to a Better World & Realm!
I have the original video of Derek Bell narrating as he's flying around the track. Unfortunately I haven't updated it to a DVD. It also looks like Bell is just cruising here, I believe because the 956 shown here has just been restored, and it would have been rude to rack it up on one of the turns.
I think this is the best driving I have seen, he makes it look easy and not fast what a driver, I bet he thinks there are other drivers who are faster. I have watched him all through his career,it now seems quite obvious, why sadly so many have died over the years and he’s still this good, I would say another Brian redman? Thanks. John h
For quite a while YT had a 1983 onboard video of Bell in his 956 at the Nordschleife, with his excellent over-dubbed commentary describing the entire circuit: gear changes, speed, racing line strategy, track surface nuances, etc. Though not a flying lap, he's tearing it up. (Bellof's car is seen leaving the pits at video's beginning; I'm pretty sure this is the same qualifying session in which he set the record.) Now, however, I can't find this video. If anyone has seen it recently, please post the link. It's spectacular. Thanks.

Because the track was partially closed. When it's operating in tourist mode, as here, you start and stop at the same point, the middle of Dottingerhohe.
