Brilliant. How raw did Le Mans used to be. Group C, Mercs v Jags, boiling weather, no chicanes, the humps still there and the old Dunlop bridge. Fantastic
? Mercedes and Jaguar only directly competed for like a grand total of 2 years in Group C. Group C's a lot more about Porsche vs Jag than it is mercedes lol
The night at the le mans is where the spirits of these cars shine, is when the drivers are really tested both in skill and mind, such a breath-taking sight of seeing these cars fly at such high speeds in the dark with nothing but the headlights to see... I feel like the night is when these beasts can be heard even more since the town is asleep, giving these beautiful creations a time to shine along with the stars.. God Bless Group C
Wow, massive respect sir. Honestly I wish I was alive back in the Group C era, I want how did it feel driving those cars especially cars like the Jaguars? It must have been a totally different kind of experience compared to what Senna and Prost were driving in F1.
Brilliant - that was the second year I ever went, '88 was a Jaguar flag waving event - '89 the glorious return of Mercedes-Benz after 40 years away. Classic Le Mans for me next year.
I was lucky enough that 1989 was my first visit. It was an incredible era; it's easy to say that in hindsight but I think we knew at the time we were watching something special.
1989 was my first year at Le Mans: how lucky was I? The late 80s and early 90s was truly the golden era of modern sportscar racing. I will be forever grateful that I was there to witness it.
I missed this years race, but was down there the next year for the Jag win in 90 and the last year of the old pit lane. I loved sitting on the edge of the old terrace hanging my legs on the windows of the suites. The blue/white and the green/oranges Mazda’s would just hurt your ears as the sound bounced between the start straight grandstands, but the Sauber Merc’s V8 were awesome along with the Jags V12 scream. The funfair was a bit different too back then, there was the big wheel and fair ground rides but the was a freak show, female strippers and ladies of the night.
haha i was live at this race my father took me with 4 jears to this race and i can still remember how fucking loud that mazda was ( after 1 round i need to plug ear pins because it was to loud) amazin ! grettings from germany ! Edit: that Jaguar sound dude still makes me goosebumps :D Le Mans is a very unik experience as a visitor and for little boys its heaven ^^
Yes - I was there too. The Mazda was loud, but the loudest of all had to be the Aston Martin Nimrod. We had a few hours sleep and we could hear the Aston in our camper van a mile away! I seem to remember it eventually retired tho.... Great race.
@@chrispenn715 Yeah that Aston was just crazy. you could litterally feel the ground shake when that thing passed by. The only other car i've felt like that was the panoz in 98/99.
Thanks so much for posting this - great work - love the music too :) I remember fragments of this race but mostly I remember fainting on the ferry coming home after it was all over. We'd been up for over 50 hours by that time :) After seeing Jaguar's win in '88 I tried to support the new Aston Group C team in '89, but when they wheeled the Silk Cut Jags onto the grid - right in front of us, well there was no way I could be for anybody except them. What a sight - those cars were simply beautiful and so much more spectacular in reality than old grainy video can portray. This was one of the best fields of Group C cars ever - what an era it was. The last few hours of this race were painful though .. and just went on forever. The lead Jag was hopelessly far back, and the Mercedes team was just perfect that day. I didn't go again until '92 - missed the second Jaguar win - that was a mistake !
Amazing stuff thanks for sharing.Strange back then we had no cars "take off" unless they'd had a blow out or crash. Then in later years with so say better aero dynamics we had a couple of cars go air bourne??
Siddharth Nandi yes..enjoyable all the same, unlike so many contemporary films/footage where the cacophony of modern media drowns out the sounds we want to hear.. Even the music used in this is good!
I'm so glad there was no music for much of this. At the beginning, the sounds of the cars taking the kink are amazing. So many classics. C9's, XJRs, 962s, 767s, AMR1s, Nissan R89Cs, Toyota 89Cs and (i think) 88Cs, Spices, Cougars, Tigas. Im sure there are also a couple i don't recognise, i would guess at some small(er) French manufacturers or maybe a Lola, or both? (11:49) I know that some of us look back with 'rose tinted specs' and I am guilty of that while watching this! For me, compared to recent Le Mans races, the 80s were incredible. That said, from the late 60s thru to the early 90s, I believe Le Mans really was the most interesting single race in the world. I hope the new rules/formula bring back some magic. 12:09 - we don't need no water let the M. F. 'er burn...? No rush boys. Maybe see what else explodes before you do anything about it?
I have some of these cars as models. Cars like the Sauber C9 Mercedes, Jaguar XJR 9, Nissan R89C, Aston Martin AMR1 and the Toyota 88C. Big fan favourites for sure along with a load of others.
The cars present here are the later 89C-V (Minolta and Taka-Q livery) and I believe an 88C in the Denso livery (older version which competed in the 88’ Le Mans. Different to the 88C-V) Very similar to the 88C-V but slightly updated. Hope this helps
@@thethirdman225Kindofa shit opinion when as I said they can just capture the race a bit differently with a few cinematic shots. The Bathhurst coverage is already like this…

Hey Nobelsin, I'm Zed, founder of Kaido Allstars, I actually made this film by mashing up many other footages of this race as it wasn't really made into a proper film before. I focused on making it as atmospheric as possible, as close to being at the track as I could in some ways, minimal commentary, and focused almost purely on the cars, sights, sounds and surroundings.
Zed R-P i know it was something like a documentary (I used to watch a whole playlist with parts of this) so, I was looking for the entire footage, do you have those parts?
Hello Zed. I am also interested in purchasing this film. What can we do to have it? Have you still got the source footage? Sound quality is fantastic, and the shots at Mulsanne straight are wonderful. Thank you.
Brilliant. How raw did Le Mans used to be. Group C, Mercs v Jags, boiling weather, no chicanes, the humps still there and the old Dunlop bridge. Fantastic
I dont personally have any track experience, but watching this footage makes me think that these drivers epitomize racing as a discipline. Its insane
? Mercedes and Jaguar only directly competed for like a grand total of 2 years in Group C. Group C's a lot more about Porsche vs Jag than it is mercedes lol
Greatest era ever imo.
One reason why cars have tire pressure sensors might be due to the Mulsanne Straight and the tires that delaminated there.
Was either jaguar or Mercedes who didn't want to race Lemans in 1987 because they didn't think their tires could withstand the high speed punishment
Best Le Mans footage I've ever seen since 1970 "Le Mans" film

Mercedes C9, Aston Martin AMR1, Jaguar XJR9 on the Mulsanne straight without chicanes. Good lord, that was eargasmic paradise!
My first Le Mans event in 1989. Epic does not do it justice.
I was driving #3 jag. My first time down the straight at 246mph was an eye opener and ass pucker. This was great, I've never seen any footage. Thanks
WOW !! Sorry for the DNF Jeff, but what an experience it must have been. I was trackside rooting for the Jags but it turned out to be a long day :(
You raced in that era.. What a titan. Knowing this is an honor I must say. I solute any who braved the lemans of that era.
So you were teammates with Derek darly and Davy Jones?

@@karelpipa The Aston's sound pretty good too in the moment or two you get to hear them.
I was there that year and can confirm the Mercs sounded great. However, I could still hear the Aston Martin on the Monday afternoon!

You still can, once every 2 years there are events called Classics where old cars compete, like the Spa Classic from last year so beautiful

That Mazda 767 can literally destroy anything in a 10 km radius just by the sheer noise it makes. It’s louder than a Hydrogen Bomb!

Why does everyone say the Toyota 88cv never raced at Le mans when you can clearly see it here a bunch of times. Or is this an older model?

Race coverage needs to always capture the sounds like this. So much of it nowadays relies on fixed camera views and poor capturing of sound.
Who is going to pay for it?
