As a mathematician the uncertainty of certain other science branches gives me a bit of anxiety 😅 I am by no means a collector but I have a bunch of common hoyas, and even those arrived to me with dubious if not 100% wrong names. It annoys me so much!
Serves them right for questioning Linnaeus, introducing DNA research and looking more into these species 😂 But my goodness, how difficult it must be to keep yourself updated all the time on what is published and what isn't? No wonder they published the same species over and over in 1800s and 1900s. And looking just at black and white photos, blurry and unclear sketches... It's good we know these are hoyas at all 😂 I also have some that I am desperately waiting to bloom to confirm their IDs.
Sure, they are humans too, but luckily nobody needs to collect a mathematical proof in the jungle and wait years to have it "bloom" before calling somebody out on a bad paper :)
I counted my hoyas today. I have 83. And I learned from this video that 5 of them are verticillata even though they were sold under different names. I like to know the accurate scientific names of the plants I have, but it doesn't bother me that other people use common or trade names. I also don't always look up the scientific info for plants I buy. Especially if it means I have to go down a rabbit hole of research.
Verticillatas are fun :D Nevertheless, I bet they still are different somehow - different leaf shape, maybe variegated margins or something else? I think for those who do want to trade, especially with collectors, they should know the true name.
Oh my , what an informative and entertaining video you have made . Your channel has been shared on my favourite Hoya group . I am not a collector , but it is extremely important to have the correct name , for the accuracy of knowledge for real hobbyists . ( lol, not me ). I believe there will be judged Hoya species shows , maybe right here in Canada , in the not distant future . Correct names will be a prerequisite to competing and showing and propagating . In my Hoya group there are some serious hobbyists , growing lovely specimens . Thank you again for sharing what you have studied in this fun and informative way .

The more I think about the names, the more I am uncertain if the names I have are correct 😂 I have at least 4 suspicious ones. Haha, that is kind. I am not sure if I would be a good teacher, unless I can talk about plants all the time 😂
Awesome video, the nerd inside me is really, really,, really happy 😊 I find natural morphogenesis extremely interesting, in spite of making everything much more complicated. Another database I use for all of my nerdy info is tropicos, in case you've never came across it, but I think Kew/IPNI are a bit more reliable. I agree! I have some plants that I got from a seller that I later found out doesn't have all the names right (not their fault, they import them like that) but now I wonder if I buy from them again if I will get what I actually want.
I'm no botanist or serious collector of hoyas, I get them because I enjoy them and also because the person I'm living with does too. I enjoy knowing the correct namne of my hoyas so I can look at photos and learn about where they are from and how they like to be cared for. It's no disaster if I don't though. Usually time will tell 🌿
Yes, I think it's not a big issue if you are not looking to trade or sell, and if you just want to have a nice looking plant :) And time will definitely tell! At least, if it has been published.
I care about the names for science purposes but to me personally I dont care in my home. I guess I care a little because if im buying online without seeing the plant in person I would like to know what im getting isnt something completely different. I want certain things or I dont want to duplicate. So I guess I care. I do wish sellers cared way more in educating than just flipping the imports for a profit. I question if some sellers have actual growing experience with some plants because they can not offer purposeful advice or answer basic questions. Thank you again for a wonderful informative video!
Yes, I also don't want duplicates. So I am often concerned if the name is right or wrong. I stopped buying pubicalyxes after buying 2 because they all look the same anyways, so I will wait for it to flower, confirm the ID and see if I actually like the flower that much to get more of them. I also wish more growers would share tips when you buy a plant from them.

Hello Miro 👋 that was so good I had to pause the video and go make a lovely hot cup of coffee to go with the rest of the video. For me, I would rather there be accuracy and consistency with the names. To be taken seriously we must be consistent, but it’s also not our fault as things unraveled so long ago. Thank you so much for having this discussion. What about “fun” names like “Jodie’s Silver” or “Royal Hawaiian Purple?” Are these name unauthorized? I recognize these names but I wonder now if these are just commercialized names, rather than the real issued plant name? Just modern day branding and marketing. Can you share your thought on those two please?

I'm a collector with no plans to share/sell cuttings, yet! Correct naming is important to me, regardless, partly because I'm curious! partly because I want to be accurate so I know what I have, and partly because I don't want to add to the confusion. If I don't know the name of a plant, I will say so, although, I must say that the change from villosa to globulosa was a serious shock and disappointment to me, and I continue to resist that one! lol! but only for my own amusement. Officially, they are now globulosa (ew!).
Great video! I like to know what my plants are because I'm a nerd like that lol. It's so frustrating when I buy a plant and it is obviously mislabeled. Especially problematic when buying from a greenhouse. I also gate common names for the same reason.
I really dislike common names, especially here, they can get a bit creepy or misleading! They call hoyas crown-of-thorns (well actually, Jesus' crown-of-thorns) but that is a name used for Euphorbia. And they call Euphorbia the same o.O Also, they call hoya, Virgin's tears - I assume because of the sap? Can we just call them by their names, please? 😂

Great vid! Really love your voice though! :D BUT: What is the "actual" latifolia then? When I search for the latifolia its always "the diner plate hoya" and not the "macrophylla"-one.
Well, the one they call macrophylla (albomarginated) is latifolia. :) The true question is what is Hoya macrophylla (Blume) and where do I find one? It seems more difficult than I thought! The dinner plate one? Could be loyceandrewsiana. Flowers can tell. What I want to know is what is the plant that was sold to me as H. latifolia? 😂 Google search can't be trusted. There is a page on Facebook - Hoya Study Corner by SC Plants. This is a guy who lives in Thailand and does hoya spreadsheets that are approved by Michele Rodda himself. So you can see there some info and this latifolia/ macrophylla thing. It also seems that there are more mistakes about verticillatas that I found out after the video. Kew needs to update its database! And verticillata needs to stop being a hoya monster 😂
I think it's fun to learn new things about my plants and if the name gets updated I guess I'd try to use the new one...however if I buy a plant under a certain ID and I, with my very limited knowledge, can't see it is clearly got mixed up with something else, I write the name which the plant was bought as. Right now I have one that's bought without an id ( just written "Hoja") but since it was in a chain store and they get their plants from the same suppliers as other garden centres, I use the name of the plant sold by the other garden centres for this one too."Hoya Australis"...if it turns out I'm wrong when it blooms, well thats okay too. I do need to tag my plants because I'm really bad with names in general. If it were for me, every human being I interact with should also have a semi-permanent name tag, so I don't have to guess any more if thats greg or susi (and NO, similar to plants, looks can be deceiving)....don't get me started on people that have the audacity to marry.
Haha, tags for people 😂 I love that! Homo sapiens 'Greg' 😂 I keep the name under which I got it (in my head), who I got it from, the month when I got it, the price. I even remember how long it was in transit for xD Sickness. I will create tags, as I think it would be useful to pinpoint the exact date and maybe write additional info.

Haha 😂 You offended her! Nooo, what else is the issue? I love that plant! For me it's very easy-going. You can keep the name 'macrophylla' on the tag until it blooms and you confirm it's not that :) And the chances are super high it is not.

It seems macrophylla (Blume) will be more difficult to locate than I thought! I already reached out to some people, but it seems not many know what the 'true' on is. It will be very exciting though when they do to get one!
well... last year i fell deep,deep,deep into that hoya hole and my last addition before I went broke was a Wilbur graves. To me now a carnosa with a very expensive name, it looks like any other carnosa I have, don't know if it will ever bloom for me or even grow. The hunter in me had a list and made check, check, check every time I was lucky but suddenly I started to wipe out names because alot of my preys didn't make it. I stopped running, took away all the nametags and started appriciating. I very much contributed to the fact that prices skyrocket insanly, ridiculously and feel almost ashamed. I know its hard to resist but I already do have a jungle...
I don't have any expensive carnosas, but I can tell you, they take a while to bloom I am not sure if it's even worth it - some say the smell is too much, they have to take the plant out of the room. In my opinion, there are many hoyas that look lovely, smell lovely and are also easy to grow like carnosa. I agree, prices have gone insane with hoyas. Unfortunately, I think we are just starting.

I don't even dare to call myself a plant collector, mostly because I collect them basing my choice on their needs and my taste. I do enjoy to read and educate myself about plants, their habitat, their characteristics, but that's about it. In the same time I do think it's important to know your plants name, of course in my little living room where I just love to enjoy them it doesn't matter much, my melanochrysum sits beside sansevieria trifasciata and I love them equally despite their name, commercial worth or others opinion, but like you pointed out in the video, misinformation can do damage in long run, especially to those whose passion is to collecting and maybe even conservation. I think if you don't plan to trade, sell cuttings it's not that big of a deal. But some people go to great lengths on groups to convince someone the (mis)information they have is right and confuse newer growers. I know people who don't believe that Epipremnums in photos with large leaves are actually Epipremnums - reason? They had Epiprepnum in their homes for 10 years and it only grew smaller leaves so the plant in photo must be a different species :D Oh well, can't convince them all!
Omg if they are the same plant whoever named it first that's the name it should be. I have the H. macrophylla albomarginata or that's what it says on the pot. But mine has not bloomed yet it's still pretty little and no sign of flowering yet
I have a Hoya labeled Hoya Latifolia bought from Gardinos in Florida 3 years ago that looks nothing like the "new" Latifolia that people are calling Latifolia. If I'm not mistaken, the Macrophylla is also supposed to be called Latifolia now but I guarantee the original Latifolia I have is not the same Hoya as the other verigated Macrophylla (now Latifolia?) that I have. I also have a Hoya Verticillata sp Bogar but I'm told its actually Hoya Pallida? I can't keep up sometimes 😳 After watching your video my Hoya Latifolia might be Blume's Macrophylla ? I'm not sure anymore 🤣
It drives me crazy! I bought a hoya and there are a million and one names under it. I spent hours yesterday surfing web and could not come up with the correct type. I say now that it is hoya pubicalyx (hopefully spelled correctly) with more variegation to it. I am over it. I already have a larger one with less spotting. Also the nursery I purchased from just had the name hoya on it. They were not sure what it was. I may keep it or give to a friend. 😳
That’s fascinating. Of course the correct scientific names matter to me. Classification and names and species are important. Cultivars also important information. At the moment I see all the chaos with names this name that. I would never buy anything obscure anyway. Hehehe I have never heard about Hoya while living in vn. Dad usually took me to the jungle near home and collected orchid & stag horn and grow them on living tree trunks in our home. Oh yeh he climbed big tree and get them hahaha I was too young to clime. It was always exciting. Grandpa and dad were very knowledgeable about plants & flowers & animals. Some of their knowledge pass on to me. No Hoya that I have seen it know off where we live, which is near Saigon.
@@BasiePlants hahaha would be amazing. Grandpa really loves plants . He had quite a few rare ones. After the communist came in 75. Things fall apart. I look up the Vietnamese name for Hoya. It doesn’t sound like a plant. Maybe it ain’t what they call there. I love orchid . I might try to get one or something. They are notorious hard to care for in Vietnam. There is only one species where I live. It is like a fan shape leaves thin and long. I don’t think I’ve seen them here . Not yet anyway. My sister loves orchid. She has heaps. She usually drives down from Queensland to visit me and visit the nursery. Sydney has more variety. That was a really long time ago. I don’t think indoor plants exist back then.
Awesome video, nice work!! It’s a great reminder that human names and classifications are just our own attempt to describe what’s going on in nature, and sometimes it’s way more complicated than we can handle, and human errors are going to happen. As a mathematician (lol i see another mathematician left a comment about this) it’s a little unnerving to not have everything neatly classified, but embracing some natural chaos is healthy. I like that you brought up PS The Hoyan because it’s SUCH a good read. A lot of shade thrown in Kloppenburg’s direction 😂 and frequent mentions of his eagerness to declare new species when it might not have merit. When I found out that some of my Hoya (acuta, parasitical) were verticillata, I wasn’t like “oh no these are all the same” just because they’re the same species - different varieties within a species can exist and that’s a-ok. When we talk about a Hoya, we are allowed to say more about it than just its official scientific genus+species name, too. I’m not going to get arrested for including that my latifolia has white margins when I talk about it 😂 And I think with collectors there can be a bit too much focus on trying to collect different species, like they’re Pokémon, when it can still be interesting to look at variations within a species. There’s only one species of Venus flytrap (and that’s the only species in its genus) but people still find purpose in collecting cultivars. Definitely hate people using descriptors to mark up prices though, especially when it’s something infamously unstable.
Peggy 💚 The only reason I hate albomarginata is because people confuse it with being part of a name (same with variegata) as it comes from Latin. So I prefer to say white margins (though in my hoya they are anywhere from cream to light green). I love C.M.Burton. Yes, she was shady, and she also did make mistake herself, but she also knew a lot. A LOT. And when I read how once they removed all her labels when she hosted a hoya meeting, I was livid. I am surprised those people were able to walk away with their heads still attached to their bodies. I agree that sometimes people focus too much on collecting as many species as possible when there are so many varieations in a species. I am actually planning on getting more verticillatas xD Especially the one that was called wibergiae. But I also want the one called pallida. So I am definitely going to have more than one verticillata and I am here for it 😂

I’m trying to get out of the habit of using the “unofficial” Latin. Omg that story is outrageous. That’s basically violence. Would be amazing to find her book “Hoyas I know and love.”
I think scientific names are important (much more useful than common names) but I also know they can quickly change when more information is made available e.g. Sansevieria and Dracaena. I’m now convinced most of my Hoyas are misidentified. I guess I have a latifolia (not macrophylla) and a verticillata (not parasitica) - I love them all nonetheless. I am a biologist and I can attest that since the use of genetic testing, most taxa are undergoing renaming and reclassifications. Plants are challenging but reptiles are a big mess too!
If you got it under the name parasitica, that has been moved to verticillata for sure :) The only issue with latifolia and macrophylla is that you can't ID until it blooms, but from what I read and heard from other collectors there is a big chance all are latifolias. I know of a grower who does supposedly offer macrophylla but it is very expensive for me. I have a hoya that I got under the name latifolia, but it doesn't look like the one I know to be latifolia (the one everyone calls macrophylla). So I will have to wait for the flowers too. Oh, I bet this happens everywhere in science haha :D

Oh, I can't imagine what's up with other hoya names xD Some things have been sorted out, some not. Hoya carnosa is more straightforward, sometimes they will sell carnosa under the name pubicalyx and other way around, but that is usually easier to sort out.

If he were to leaf (ha - get it? leaf) his shelf and be arrested he'd appear on a wanted poster as hoya George, AKA Macrophylla, AKA Latifolia, AKA Clandestina, AKA .... It's so much easier walking into his room and saying "hi George, how we doing this morning?" and he'll say "I'm fine Bill, I just need a little drink this morning, can you get me a little water please?" "Sure George, be right back", "oh, and Bill, can you scratch me right under my third leaf up, there's a little mealy hiding there and he's driving me nuts!". I don't have either of those Hoya. Hoya panchoi, as far as I can see, is not an accepted name. Hoya bilobata is, and is often confused with sp. aff. burtoniae (but bilobata doesn't have pubescent leaves). IML228 is just an accession number, IML standing for Iris Marie Liddle, late David Liddle's wife. According to C.M. Burton though, from 1998-2007, David Liddle sold IML228 as Hoya bilobata, but after that, in 2008, IML228 was refered as Hoya panchoi. There seems to be a big confusion about panchoi, and name diversifolia is mentioned too - in face, Kew lists panchoi as synonym for diversifolia, but that plant is much different than bilobata in terms of the leaves and the flowers. Honestly I don't know if this was resolved. Since I have neither, I never really looked into them. A good person to ask would be Torill Nyhuus though. In any case, I would keep the labels under which you got these plants and wait for them to bloom. There should be a significan difference in flower if one of them turns out to be diversifolia :)

Human errors are bound to happen and most are not meant to mislead. Being said that, Ted Green may have made mistakes but I’m quite sure it wasn’t his intention. I personally know him and happen to like him. I enjoy visiting him and looking at all his Hoyas in his beautiful property.
I pretty much said the same :) Unless you don't want to talk about hoya (or any other plants for that matter) mistakes are bound to happen. Information changes all the time. Also, botanists (and hobbyists) disagree on what some plant is, but I think it is good to know all of this information and hear different opinions. I think there may have been a misunderstanding here - I have nothing against Ted Green, Dale Kloppenburg nor Christine Burton. :) As I said, they all have made mistakes and so have many other people who have researched hoyas, and even now mistakes are being made all the time, not on purpose. There are many accounts on how one side experienced others, as we can read in P.S. The Hoyan, but I personaly don't pay too much attention to that, as I was not there and I don't find it relevant in growing hoyas and learning about them. :) Plant community can be very cut-throat but I prefer to focus on the positive and more beautiful side.
I was surprised when I tried to convince people not use the name Hoya Hindu Rope, because it is offensive, but the hoya community on Facebook wouldn't hear it. And it's not even like Hindu Rope is a real Hoya name.
I got last year small cutting of Hoya Clandestina, I understand now why I couldn’t find a similar photo, all these names are confusing. Does it mean I no longer call it H.Clandestina? I want to use the correct names but I know this happens often with plants. Over time the names are corrected or simply updated.
It is my understanding 'clandestina' is simply a synonym. Still I would wait for the flower to confirm the identity. You can leave the name on the tag, in parenthesis? H.clandestina is a synonym for Hoya macrophylla (Blume) and I can't find anyone who was true Hoya macrophylla (Blume) except for one grow in Thailand that might have it.
I think I have accidentally found out what it is after looking at some Hoyas. It looks like Hoya Neoebudica. This will be confirmed once it blooms, fingers crossed!
How can you live without labels. I have 60 and I have label and an excel sheet with the species name and the person I got it from. :) It matters to me to know and not to forget. I have some hoyas where I doubt the ID I have but I need to make them flower first. Hoyas are definitely not plants for impatient growers.
I somehow am still able to rememeber the names (even the accession numbers), who I got them from, and when (I know the month, not the exact date, but I do have it on record, haha). I do intent to write the labels but I am wondering if I should just number them and then have a file with the number and additional information... I even know the price 😂 (when the price was known to me, some I got in a batch, so the price was for the entire package, and a very good deal :) ) Oh, yes, I have at least 4 that I am not sure if the ID is correct. In videos I try to say it is the ID it was sold to me under. Those are less than a year old (except one) so I have to wait a bit more to see the flowers. Some want to flower in less than 6 months and for some it's a waiting game. But I agree, definitely not for impatient people.

I think scientific names are sometimes better than common names. Especially when talking about a specific plant (one that might not have a common name). It's a lot harder to compare a speices of plant to other collector's species of the same plant if they don't have the same scientific name but are in fact genetically the same plant. Seems like some DNA testing is needed. And it's low key wild that plants aren't "allowed" to have different looks within it's population, meanwhile there's wild animals with variations and no one is going to give them a new scientific name.
I definitely think proper names are very useful when talking about plants. Sometimes I hate common names as some of them really sound ridiculous. And also, a lot of people use one common name for multiple plants, which is not very helpful at all. But it gets really complex sometimes, especially with accession numbers.
@@BasiePlants My biggest pet pevee is the common names that are the scientific name for another plant. How confusing is that on a scale from yes to yes? I actually prefer using the scientific name in many cases (and many of my plants doesn't have a common name anyway). The common names are (sometimes) different in different countries (even within the English speaking countries) to confuse it even further. I'm definately on team official name x)
Haha :D They will have a name when they bloom xD You can call it Hoya sp., or Hoya sp.cf. (name of the species you think it could be, or is most comparable to) :) But that's like, a working name :D

I am by no means a collector but I have a bunch of common hoyas, and even those arrived to me with dubious if not 100% wrong names. It annoys me so much!
Serves them right for questioning Linnaeus, introducing DNA research and looking more into these species 😂 But my goodness, how difficult it must be to keep yourself updated all the time on what is published and what isn't? No wonder they published the same species over and over in 1800s and 1900s. And looking just at black and white photos, blurry and unclear sketches... It's good we know these are hoyas at all 😂 I also have some that I am desperately waiting to bloom to confirm their IDs.
Mathematicians make mistakes too.
Sure, they are humans too, but luckily nobody needs to collect a mathematical proof in the jungle and wait years to have it "bloom" before calling somebody out on a bad paper :)

I counted my hoyas today. I have 83. And I learned from this video that 5 of them are verticillata even though they were sold under different names. I like to know the accurate scientific names of the plants I have, but it doesn't bother me that other people use common or trade names. I also don't always look up the scientific info for plants I buy. Especially if it means I have to go down a rabbit hole of research.
Verticillatas are fun :D Nevertheless, I bet they still are different somehow - different leaf shape, maybe variegated margins or something else? I think for those who do want to trade, especially with collectors, they should know the true name.
Oh my , what an informative and entertaining video you have made . Your channel has been shared on my favourite Hoya group . I am not a collector , but it is extremely important to have the correct name , for the accuracy of knowledge for real hobbyists . ( lol, not me ). I believe there will be judged Hoya species shows , maybe right here in Canada , in the not distant future . Correct names will be a prerequisite to competing and showing and propagating . In my Hoya group there are some serious hobbyists , growing lovely specimens .

I find natural morphogenesis extremely interesting, in spite of making everything much more complicated.
Another database I use for all of my nerdy info is tropicos, in case you've never came across it, but I think Kew/IPNI are a bit more reliable. With the never ending DNA studies, a lot of names will change and I'll definitely be keeping my eyes open. 🤓

I agree! I have some plants that I got from a seller that I later found out doesn't have all the names right (not their fault, they import them like that) but now I wonder if I buy from them again if I will get what I actually want.
I'm no botanist or serious collector of hoyas, I get them because I enjoy them and also because the person I'm living with does too. I enjoy knowing the correct namne of my hoyas so I can look at photos and learn about where they are from and how they like to be cared for. It's no disaster if I don't though. Usually time will tell 🌿
Yes, I think it's not a big issue if you are not looking to trade or sell, and if you just want to have a nice looking plant :) And time will definitely tell! At least, if it has been published.
I care about the names for science purposes but to me personally I dont care in my home. I guess I care a little because if im buying online without seeing the plant in person I would like to know what im getting isnt something completely different. I want certain things or I dont want to duplicate. So I guess I care. I do wish sellers cared way more in educating than just flipping the imports for a profit. I question if some sellers have actual growing experience with some plants because they can not offer purposeful advice or answer basic questions. Thank you again for a wonderful informative video!
Yes, I also don't want duplicates. So I am often concerned if the name is right or wrong. I stopped buying pubicalyxes after buying 2 because they all look the same anyways, so I will wait for it to flower, confirm the ID and see if I actually like the flower that much to get more of them. I also wish more growers would share tips when you buy a plant from them.

For me, I would rather there be accuracy and consistency with the names. To be taken seriously we must be consistent, but it’s also not our fault as things unraveled so long ago. Thank you so much for having this discussion. What about “fun” names like “Jodie’s Silver” or “Royal Hawaiian Purple?” Are these name unauthorized? I recognize these names but I wonder now if these are just commercialized names, rather than the real issued plant name? Just modern day branding and marketing. Can you share your thought on those two please?

I'm a collector with no plans to share/sell cuttings, yet! Correct naming is important to me, regardless, partly because I'm curious! partly because I want to be accurate so I know what I have, and partly because I don't want to add to the confusion. If I don't know the name of a plant, I will say so, although, I must say that the change from villosa to globulosa was a serious shock and disappointment to me, and I continue to resist that one! lol! but only for my own amusement. Officially, they are now globulosa (ew!).
Great video! I like to know what my plants are because I'm a nerd like that lol. It's so frustrating when I buy a plant and it is obviously mislabeled. Especially problematic when buying from a greenhouse. I also gate common names for the same reason.
I really dislike common names, especially here, they can get a bit creepy or misleading! They call hoyas crown-of-thorns (well actually, Jesus' crown-of-thorns) but that is a name used for Euphorbia. And they call Euphorbia the same o.O Also, they call hoya, Virgin's tears - I assume because of the sap? Can we just call them by their names, please? 😂

BUT: What is the "actual" latifolia then? When I search for the latifolia its always "the diner plate hoya" and not the "macrophylla"-one.
Well, the one they call macrophylla (albomarginated) is latifolia. :) The true question is what is Hoya macrophylla (Blume) and where do I find one? It seems more difficult than I thought! The dinner plate one? Could be loyceandrewsiana. Flowers can tell. What I want to know is what is the plant that was sold to me as H. latifolia? 😂 Google search can't be trusted. There is a page on Facebook - Hoya Study Corner by SC Plants. This is a guy who lives in Thailand and does hoya spreadsheets that are approved by Michele Rodda himself. So you can see there some info and this latifolia/ macrophylla thing. It also seems that there are more mistakes about verticillatas that I found out after the video. Kew needs to update its database! And verticillata needs to stop being a hoya monster 😂
I think it's fun to learn new things about my plants and if the name gets updated I guess I'd try to use the new one...however if I buy a plant under a certain ID and I, with my very limited knowledge, can't see it is clearly got mixed up with something else, I write the name which the plant was bought as. Right now I have one that's bought without an id ( just written "Hoja") but since it was in a chain store and they get their plants from the same suppliers as other garden centres, I use the name of the plant sold by the other garden centres for this one too."Hoya Australis"...if it turns out I'm wrong when it blooms, well thats okay too.
I do need to tag my plants because I'm really bad with names in general. If it were for me, every human being I interact with should also have a semi-permanent name tag, so I don't have to guess any more if thats greg or susi (and NO, similar to plants, looks can be deceiving)....don't get me started on people that have the audacity to marry.
Haha, tags for people 😂 I love that! Homo sapiens 'Greg' 😂 I keep the name under which I got it (in my head), who I got it from, the month when I got it, the price. I even remember how long it was in transit for xD Sickness. I will create tags, as I think it would be useful to pinpoint the exact date and maybe write additional info.

It seems macrophylla (Blume) will be more difficult to locate than I thought! I already reached out to some people, but it seems not many know what the 'true' on is. It will be very exciting though when they do to get one!
well... last year i fell deep,deep,deep into that hoya hole and my last addition before I went broke was a Wilbur graves. To me now a carnosa with a very expensive name, it looks like any other carnosa I have, don't know if it will ever bloom for me or even grow. The hunter in me had a list and made check, check, check every time I was lucky but suddenly I started to wipe out names because alot of my preys didn't make it. I stopped running, took away all the nametags and started appriciating. I very much contributed to the fact that prices skyrocket insanly, ridiculously and feel almost ashamed. I know its hard to resist but I already do have a jungle...
I don't have any expensive carnosas, but I can tell you, they take a while to bloom I am not sure if it's even worth it - some say the smell is too much, they have to take the plant out of the room. In my opinion, there are many hoyas that look lovely, smell lovely and are also easy to grow like carnosa. I agree, prices have gone insane with hoyas. Unfortunately, I think we are just starting.

I don't even dare to call myself a plant collector, mostly because I collect them basing my choice on their needs and my taste. I do enjoy to read and educate myself about plants, their habitat, their characteristics, but that's about it. In the same time I do think it's important to know your plants name, of course in my little living room where I just love to enjoy them it doesn't matter much, my melanochrysum sits beside sansevieria trifasciata and I love them equally despite their name, commercial worth or others opinion, but like you pointed out in the video, misinformation can do damage in long run, especially to those whose passion is to collecting and maybe even conservation. I think if you don't plan to trade, sell cuttings it's not that big of a deal. But some people go to great lengths on groups to convince someone the (mis)information they have is right and confuse newer growers. I know people who don't believe that Epipremnums in photos with large leaves are actually Epipremnums - reason? They had Epiprepnum in their homes for 10 years and it only grew smaller leaves so the plant in photo must be a different species :D Oh well, can't convince them all!

Omg if they are the same plant whoever named it first that's the name it should be. I have the H. macrophylla albomarginata or that's what it says on the pot. But mine has not bloomed yet it's still pretty little and no sign of flowering yet
I have a Hoya labeled Hoya Latifolia bought from Gardinos in Florida 3 years ago that looks nothing like the "new" Latifolia that people are calling Latifolia. If I'm not mistaken, the Macrophylla is also supposed to be called Latifolia now but I guarantee the original Latifolia I have is not the same Hoya as the other verigated Macrophylla (now Latifolia?) that I have. I also have a Hoya Verticillata sp Bogar but I'm told its actually Hoya Pallida? I can't keep up sometimes 😳

It drives me crazy! I bought a hoya and there are a million and one names under it. I spent hours yesterday surfing web and could not come up with the correct type. I say now that it is hoya pubicalyx (hopefully spelled correctly) with more variegation to it. I am over it. I already have a larger one with less spotting. Also the nursery I purchased from just had the name hoya on it. They were not sure what it was. I may keep it or give to a friend. 😳
That’s fascinating. Of course the correct scientific names matter to me. Classification and names and species are important. Cultivars also important information. At the moment I see all the chaos with names this name that. I would never buy anything obscure anyway. Hehehe I have never heard about Hoya while living in vn. Dad usually took me to the jungle near home and collected orchid & stag horn and grow them on living tree trunks in our home. Oh yeh he climbed big tree and get them hahaha I was too young to clime. It was always exciting. Grandpa and dad were very knowledgeable about plants & flowers & animals. Some of their knowledge pass on to me. No Hoya that I have seen it know off where we live, which is near Saigon.
Oh, I bet you could find some hoyas though! They are hiding 😂 But orchids are lovely too. They are perhaps my 2nd favorite. Such a wide variety!
@@BasiePlants hahaha would be amazing. Grandpa really loves plants . He had quite a few rare ones. After the communist came in 75. Things fall apart. I look up the Vietnamese name for Hoya. It doesn’t sound like a plant. Maybe it ain’t what they call there. I love orchid . I might try to get one or something. They are notorious hard to care for in Vietnam. There is only one species where I live. It is like a fan shape leaves thin and long. I don’t think I’ve seen them here . Not yet anyway. My sister loves orchid. She has heaps. She usually drives down from Queensland to visit me and visit the nursery. Sydney has more variety. That was a really long time ago. I don’t think indoor plants exist back then.

It’s a great reminder that human names and classifications are just our own attempt to describe what’s going on in nature, and sometimes it’s way more complicated than we can handle, and human errors are going to happen. As a mathematician (lol i see another mathematician left a comment about this) it’s a little unnerving to not have everything neatly classified, but embracing some natural chaos is healthy. I like that you brought up PS The Hoyan because it’s SUCH a good read. A lot of shade thrown in Kloppenburg’s direction 😂 and frequent mentions of his eagerness to declare new species when it might not have merit.
When I found out that some of my Hoya (acuta, parasitical) were verticillata, I wasn’t like “oh no these are all the same” just because they’re the same species - different varieties within a species can exist and that’s a-ok. When we talk about a Hoya, we are allowed to say more about it than just its official scientific genus+species name, too. I’m not going to get arrested for including that my latifolia has white margins when I talk about it 😂 And I think with collectors there can be a bit too much focus on trying to collect different species, like they’re Pokémon, when it can still be interesting to look at variations within a species. There’s only one species of Venus flytrap (and that’s the only species in its genus) but people still find purpose in collecting cultivars. Definitely hate people using descriptors to mark up prices though, especially when it’s something infamously unstable.
Peggy 💚 The only reason I hate albomarginata is because people confuse it with being part of a name (same with variegata) as it comes from Latin. So I prefer to say white margins (though in my hoya they are anywhere from cream to light green). I love C.M.Burton. Yes, she was shady, and she also did make mistake herself, but she also knew a lot. A LOT. And when I read how once they removed all her labels when she hosted a hoya meeting, I was livid. I am surprised those people were able to walk away with their heads still attached to their bodies. I agree that sometimes people focus too much on collecting as many species as possible when there are so many varieations in a species. I am actually planning on getting more verticillatas xD Especially the one that was called wibergiae. But I also want the one called pallida. So I am definitely going to have more than one verticillata and I am here for it 😂

I think scientific names are important (much more useful than common names) but I also know they can quickly change when more information is made available e.g. Sansevieria and Dracaena. I’m now convinced most of my Hoyas are misidentified. I guess I have a latifolia (not macrophylla) and a verticillata (not parasitica) - I love them all nonetheless.
I am a biologist and I can attest that since the use of genetic testing, most taxa are undergoing renaming and reclassifications. Plants are challenging but reptiles are a big mess too!
If you got it under the name parasitica, that has been moved to verticillata for sure :) The only issue with latifolia and macrophylla is that you can't ID until it blooms, but from what I read and heard from other collectors there is a big chance all are latifolias. I know of a grower who does supposedly offer macrophylla but it is very expensive for me. I have a hoya that I got under the name latifolia, but it doesn't look like the one I know to be latifolia (the one everyone calls macrophylla). So I will have to wait for the flowers too. Oh, I bet this happens everywhere in science haha :D

Oh, I can't imagine what's up with other hoya names xD Some things have been sorted out, some not. Hoya carnosa is more straightforward, sometimes they will sell carnosa under the name pubicalyx and other way around, but that is usually easier to sort out.

WOW! Good thing my plant, named George, is a law abiding plant and not a criminal. If he were to leaf (ha - get it? leaf) his shelf and be arrested he'd appear on a wanted poster as hoya George, AKA Macrophylla, AKA Latifolia, AKA Clandestina, AKA .... It's so much easier walking into his room and saying "hi George, how we doing this morning?" and he'll say "I'm fine Bill, I just need a little drink this morning, can you get me a little water please?" "Sure George, be right back", "oh, and Bill, can you scratch me right under my third leaf up, there's a little mealy hiding there and he's driving me nuts!". "No problem George, here, hold on (squish), there, how's that?" "ahhhh, you're the best".

I don't have either of those Hoya. Hoya panchoi, as far as I can see, is not an accepted name. Hoya bilobata is, and is often confused with sp. aff. burtoniae (but bilobata doesn't have pubescent leaves). IML228 is just an accession number, IML standing for Iris Marie Liddle, late David Liddle's wife. According to C.M. Burton though, from 1998-2007, David Liddle sold IML228 as Hoya bilobata, but after that, in 2008, IML228 was refered as Hoya panchoi. There seems to be a big confusion about panchoi, and name diversifolia is mentioned too - in face, Kew lists panchoi as synonym for diversifolia, but that plant is much different than bilobata in terms of the leaves and the flowers. Honestly I don't know if this was resolved. Since I have neither, I never really looked into them. A good person to ask would be Torill Nyhuus though. In any case, I would keep the labels under which you got these plants and wait for them to bloom. There should be a significan difference in flower if one of them turns out to be diversifolia :)

Human errors are bound to happen and most are not meant to mislead. Being said that, Ted Green may have made mistakes but I’m quite sure it wasn’t his intention. I personally know him and happen to like him. I enjoy visiting him and looking at all his Hoyas in his beautiful property.
I pretty much said the same :) Unless you don't want to talk about hoya (or any other plants for that matter) mistakes are bound to happen. Information changes all the time. Also, botanists (and hobbyists) disagree on what some plant is, but I think it is good to know all of this information and hear different opinions. I think there may have been a misunderstanding here - I have nothing against Ted Green, Dale Kloppenburg nor Christine Burton. :) As I said, they all have made mistakes and so have many other people who have researched hoyas, and even now mistakes are being made all the time, not on purpose. There are many accounts on how one side experienced others, as we can read in P.S. The Hoyan, but I personaly don't pay too much attention to that, as I was not there and I don't find it relevant in growing hoyas and learning about them. :) Plant community can be very cut-throat but I prefer to focus on the positive and more beautiful side.
I was surprised when I tried to convince people not use the name Hoya Hindu Rope, because it is offensive, but the hoya community on Facebook wouldn't hear it. And it's not even like Hindu Rope is a real Hoya name.

Is it ok to call this plant latifolia albo marginata?
I got last year small cutting of Hoya Clandestina, I understand now why I couldn’t find a similar photo, all these names are confusing. Does it mean I no longer call it H.Clandestina? I want to use the correct names but I know this happens often with plants. Over time the names are corrected or simply updated.
It is my understanding 'clandestina' is simply a synonym. Still I would wait for the flower to confirm the identity. You can leave the name on the tag, in parenthesis? H.clandestina is a synonym for Hoya macrophylla (Blume) and I can't find anyone who was true Hoya macrophylla (Blume) except for one grow in Thailand that might have it.
I think I have accidentally found out what it is after looking at some Hoyas. It looks like Hoya Neoebudica. This will be confirmed once it blooms, fingers crossed!
How can you live without labels. I have 60 and I have label and an excel sheet with the species name and the person I got it from. :) It matters to me to know and not to forget.
I have some hoyas where I doubt the ID I have but I need to make them flower first. Hoyas are definitely not plants for impatient growers.
I somehow am still able to rememeber the names (even the accession numbers), who I got them from, and when (I know the month, not the exact date, but I do have it on record, haha). I do intent to write the labels but I am wondering if I should just number them and then have a file with the number and additional information... I even know the price 😂 (when the price was known to me, some I got in a batch, so the price was for the entire package, and a very good deal :) ) Oh, yes, I have at least 4 that I am not sure if the ID is correct. In videos I try to say it is the ID it was sold to me under. Those are less than a year old (except one) so I have to wait a bit more to see the flowers. Some want to flower in less than 6 months and for some it's a waiting game. But I agree, definitely not for impatient people.
@@BasiePlants maybe next time someone asks you about your superpower on a job interview, you can say you remember latin botanical names of all your hoyas :D I remember all of them, even the price but I would mess up the spelling I think (susuela? sussuela? blashernasomethingii ssp. valmayoriana) I can always look up the spelling but no way I can remember it.

I think scientific names are sometimes better than common names. Especially when talking about a specific plant (one that might not have a common name). It's a lot harder to compare a speices of plant to other collector's species of the same plant if they don't have the same scientific name but are in fact genetically the same plant. Seems like some DNA testing is needed. And it's low key wild that plants aren't "allowed" to have different looks within it's population, meanwhile there's wild animals with variations and no one is going to give them a new scientific name.
I definitely think proper names are very useful when talking about plants. Sometimes I hate common names as some of them really sound ridiculous. And also, a lot of people use one common name for multiple plants, which is not very helpful at all. But it gets really complex sometimes, especially with accession numbers.
@@BasiePlants My biggest pet pevee is the common names that are the scientific name for another plant. How confusing is that on a scale from yes to yes? I actually prefer using the scientific name in many cases (and many of my plants doesn't have a common name anyway). The common names are (sometimes) different in different countries (even within the English speaking countries) to confuse it even further. I'm definately on team official name x)
Yes I think it's important to know the correct name. I give away a lot of cuttings to friends. I would feel bad if my misinformation was passed on .
Me too! I always try to mention though, 'This is the name under which I got it.' and I would let them know if that changed.

Haha :D They will have a name when they bloom xD You can call it Hoya sp., or Hoya sp.cf. (name of the species you think it could be, or is most comparable to) :) But that's like, a working name :D
