My Mother got Dementia and I believe it's because her doctor insisted that she NOT eat ANY fat due to her cholesterol. She spent 60 years without fat and was the first in our family who got Dementia in her 80s. I took care of her until she died and it was so sad and lonely.

That makes sense because my MIL didn't have to take cholesterol medicine but she hardly touched fat all and got Kidney disease where she had to have dialysis every week and then developed dementia not long afterwards! Then my husband developed T2D and then got cancer he also avoided fat trimedvit all off his meat and took off the chicken skins got cancer. But I avoided as much as I possibly could too but I ate my chicken skin mostly but fortunately haven't got any of those things they did but I do have a weight problem a BMI problem and a slightly underative elevated thyroid and slightly elevated cholesterol and some inflammation issues, hypothalamus stress, etc but working on trying to fix it all now. Unfortunately for my MIL in 2007 and husband in 2019 they are no longer here. My mom too with T2D and many others issues gone in February this year.

About 8 years ago I participated in a low carb ketogenic diet group. There were 30 of us and every single person was healed of their ailments. We all lost about 30 to 70 pounds each. One woman was even cured of multiple sclerosis. I have ankylosing spondylitis and I was cured of that. What I noticed first was the brain fog I always had just disappear after about 15 days on the diet. I had ketosis sticks to check the ketones in my urine and when I was in deep ketosis my brain and body felt great. I was quite hungry though. We ate any type of meat, some vegetables, and a bit of fruit. No bread…..no cookies…..no pasta…..no rice….. Everyone’s high blood pressure went down to quite low and any one who was diabetic came off their meds.

My grandfather lived until a couple of months before his 100th birthday and was mentally sharp and active until just before he passed away when his heart finally gave out. He never followed a special diet but he did not smoke or drink, he practiced moderation with what he ate although he did eat carbs and processed food. He loved his Little Debbie’s snacks and Snickers bars. What I believe kept him alive so long was staying active mentally and physically. He played shuffleboard and had a part time job until he was well into his eighties, he maintained social contacts, he followed the news. He took some meds later in life but much later than most people start gobbling up
pharmaceuticals because they see it as a normal part of aging. Brain fog and physical deterioration are also caused by lack of activity. Often people with poor diets also don’t look after their bodies or minds in other ways and some of their problems may not be the food alone but their lifestyle in general. Keto eliminates a lot of healthy foods as well as processed ones. and there are now a lot of processed keto-friendly foods that are probably not any healthier than any other processed snacks. For me, moderation in my diet and an awareness that staying healthy involves more than restricting what I eat is what I hope will give me a long life!

A LOT of people get Lyme disease that goes undiagnosed. The bacteria can hide in different parts of the body, lay dormant for years & then create havoc. Alzheimer's & Dementia are some of the side effects. I think this could easily be a pandemic. Most drs label it as different types of Arthritis or Dementia or Alzheimer's, and prescribe medication forever.

In my 40's I was diagnosed with White Matter Disease, which in my case amounts to scarring or lesions in the brain. I think it's from blood vessels "dying." It affects my memory and I get easily confused and have a hard time following conversation or instructions. My IQ was in the upper 130's but now I daily, all day, forget how to spell, use or even pronounce simple one syllable words, even if I used them correctly just a moment earlier. They told me it can't be stopped or cured and will have to be in a nursing home in a few years. They don't know which of the potential causes pertain to me, mainly because I experience most of the possibilities: Head trauma (I've had a few concussions, beginning when I was a kid), bad cholesterol (runs in the family), sleep apnea, and a couple more that also apply to me that I don't recall right now. But you pointed out Lyme disease which is something the neurologist didn't consider. About twenty years ago I was diagnosed with it, my primary doctor believing I had been infected as a kid so by my 30's a lot of damage had been done. I did two courses of antibiotics and two rounds of Cat's Claw. It wasn't for at least another fifteen years that I was sent to a neurologist due to memory and confusion. We don't have a neurologist in town anymore and the clinics in Tulsa can't keep them on staff, but your comment on about Lyme Disease has me wondering. I don't remember being retested so maybe I still have it, or something. I will try to look into it more. Thank you.

Extremely unlikely she wasn't advised of the dangers, as this is a common and widely used treatment. Sadly the problem with helping people with dementia is trying to get them and their family to NOT listen to their doctors who only want to give them useless medication and tell the family they can eat whatever they want because it doesn't matter. My brother died from dementia at 67 and only wanted to eat sodas, cookies, candy, ice cream. I took two weeks off work drove 30 minutes one way twice a day to feed him real home made cooked food with butter and coconut oil. I gave him a lot of B vitamins and other supplements like D3, magnesium, zinc multivitamin and minerals. I took him off his medication. During week two his walking was improved and he was able to tell me he didn't want to take all those vitamins. I asked him why not and he said he just didn't. Because I wasn't his POA I wasn't the person in charge of his health care. His son had the home nurse return and give him the useless medicine and soon after stopping the supplements he fell and hit his head and his son put him in a nursing home. When covid hit he died from neglect because we weren't able to make sure he was getting proper care.

Doing this diet will be new to me. I am 57 years old. In my early 50's a CT scan showed I have 4 lesions/scars in the brain. It's in the area that affect memory, confusion/understanding and anxiety, and is diagnosed as White Matter Disease. The neurologist predicted that, because it's progressive, by 70 I will have to live in a nursing home; I don't accept it, even though both of my parents passed away within this past year, each with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's.
I'm disabled and all but totally alone, now. I want to learn about this diet, yet it is difficult for me to understand and follow directions, especially if it's new. Everyone keeps this diet in a context too complicated for me. I don't know where to turn to be able to learn more. if only there were a simplified context.
Going further back, I have other diagnosis's too. CFS, IBS, food allergies to almost everything ( nearly all fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds, etc), other allergies and asthma, ADHD, Fibromyalgia, Myofascial Pain Syndrome, etc. I wonder if this diet might offer some relief from these things.

Dr Boz: This is your best story ever. My brother-in-law had an older brother named Monfred who had a bad case of flu at 4 years old and all the language he had learned up until then he had lost. We owned a farm at that time and I was very young at the time and Monfred came to live with us. He could sit at the dinner table and eat with us. Herman, my brother-in-law told me stories about when Monfred was little he could speak and act normal till the flu burned out his brain. So I understand Susie maybe too well. Her recovery is nothing short of miraculous. However, do not expect this recovery to extend for too long a period of time. I would expect her recovery to transform into another fall from stability very soon. Maybe with mct oil and ketogenic esters it could extend for a while but it is just the nature of the illness to fall into helplessness very soon. Sorry to say this Dr but reprieve is short. I just wish we could have done this for Monfred.

Don’t forget that much of the genetic data we have is about correlation and not causation. In other words, we’re treating it like a bit of a black box in which we don’t look inside. We just poke it and see what happens. A black box, by definition, cannot be understood. It can only be observed and the outcomes logged.

Some of that improvement might be a discontinuation of medications that come with side effects. Sleeping pills and benzodiazepines might increase the risk of dementia, especially when taken long term. Lamictal most certainly can increase the risk. Doubt that she has any say in what food to eat or drugs to take. She's at the mercy of the clinicians who prescribe her pills and the people who care for her.

I currently work as an RD in a Geriatric setting for over 12 years. All of my residents in the dementia wing have dementia and many on other parts of the nursing home also have dementia. The classic Alzheimer's patients are aplenty as well as those with vascular dementia and some have the disease secondary to other diseases such as Parkinson's. Only some of them have diabetes and the rest don't have an issue with glucose metabolism. I'd bet if ALL with Alzheimer's went ketogenic that they all wouldn't reverse their condition. I also wouldn't recommend it because weight loss, illness and falls become an issue in the elderly. They are frail and don't have an appetite and for many, sweets tend to be their comfort foods. However I agree that for Susie, a relatively young woman with Down's syndrome and early dementia, a ketogenic diet saved her life, But I don't think it's safe to copy and paste the ketogenic diet for all geriatric patients with Alzheimer's disease. More studies need to be done in the future, but I am hopeful that Alzheimer's will see an end to its reign.

I have no medical expertise, but I have to think these types of diseases are from exposure to our environment be it chemicals, pollution, and a lot to our food-like products. Also we are sedentary and our food "pyramid" changed drastically around 1980.
