I wear hard lense in my left eye but my eye is getting heavier and I can’t bear after wearing three four hours but in my right soft lense is working cool. Please suggest what to do for my left eye?
Recently started wearing hard contact lenses for keratoconus and have had mine for almost two months now. Really didn't have a hard time adjusting to them at all, loving the eyesight. Thanks for your videos, they're really helpful. I do want to ask if you have a video (or can make one) with suggestions for which contact lens solution is best for cleaning & caring for hard contact lenses.
I have had the same rgp lenses for several years now. I would always rip my soft lenses. The only thing I don't like is sometimes my eyes get really red later in the day.
I'm in the process of getting used to hard contact lenses. Honestly speaking it's not easy, but since I'm not able to wear glasses without getting headaches and I have to look at the computer screen for 8 hours a day, it's worth it. With hard lenses my eyes don't get irritated and dry like they did with soft lenses and my doctor told me, in the long term they would be better for my eyes.
No way! I got soft lenses one time because I was curious as to how they would feel but i can co-sign Anna alot of irritation especially when putting them on and dry out very fast.

I tried soft ones for a couple weeks, but as I am quite young and I have to look at a screen for many hours a day, I wanted to choose the healthiest version for me. My eye doctor recommended me hard contacts because they support the oxigen supply for the eyes and prevent dryness. Although I had a quite hard time getting used to the feeling of hard ones, I would choose them again because I want to do what‘s best for my eyes.
Yes no doubt you can feel them in the beginning but we'll fitting RGP lenses desensitizes quite quickly. It only took 2 weeks for me and I have dry se sitive eyes. I don't even feel them now and are super comfortable.
I tried semi hard lenses the first time, and my eyes just would not stop tearing up. I would like to use hard lens, but some how my eyes never got used to it.
I developed an "allergy" to my soft contacts once and had to wear RGPs. My eye doc did NOT measure them properly and I spent a year wearing hard contacts that did not sit properly on my eye. I couldn't see, since the edge of the lense sat on my pupil- and when they didn't? They sat in my eyelids. 😭 Luckily, I switched doctors and he re-measured and gave me a new pair. Ended up trying soft lenses again (allergy vanished???) since the RGPs were still uncomfortable. I'm honestly too scared to ever go back to RGPs! 😵
I started wearing hard contact lenses in the late 1960's. I loved them! I had severe stigmatatizium . I had Lasix done about 10 years ago. Monovision. I wasn't satisfied because my vision wasn't as clear as with the hard lenses. I am glad to hear I can get the hard lenses again. I am 69 years old now. Very healthy and thankful 🙏
I'm 68 and have been wearing hard lenses since 1967, I'm very happy with them. The optician is trying to persuade me to try Lasix but I'm not keen. Glad to hear your views on this.

When I needed to switch to RGP lenses after wearing soft lenses for years, I tried to get fitted for them. I saw three eye docs and they were not able to fit me correctly. Either they were too loose or tight and uncomfortable.This was an expensive 3yr process of lenses not fitting right. I discovered with this experience that not alot of eye docs are savvy in fitting this modality nor know how. Finally saw an eye doc that specializes in RGP fits. That was 10 yrs ago.I now wear multifocal RGP lenses in perfect comfort.Proper fit is extremely important with RGP lenses for comfort and long term health. Proper fitting RGP lenses become super comfortable after about 15-20min. Once adapted they are comfortable like soft lenses.
@@matthewmiller5457 it took a few weeks slowly adding an hour each day. Boston XO2 is a ultra breathable lens so I now wear them comfortably 16+hrs a day.
Today is my first time wearing hard contact lenses and it's a bit uncomfortable, but it really improved my vision. I've been wearing this for almost 5 hours now.
I've worn Boston XO2 RGP lenses since day one, it became avail. This hyper breathable material allows me to wear em for long periods morning to night.huge fan👍!
I have worn hard, soft and gas perm lenses. I had a hard time till I found the right eye doctor. I have horrible allergies all year. I get bad build up on the lenses. Finally got the right soft lens and solutions then guess what at 33 I needed progressive lenses. So I just wear glasses I'm 64. So I could write a book now. Love watching your videos. Yes I have the same eye doctor been 30 years.
I have been using RGP lenses for a few months now, I have also tried soft lenses . TBH I prefer the sharp vision I get from the RGP lenses, yes there's some initial discomfort but I was able to get over it within 3 days !
i wear ortho k lenses and they are simply amazing. this process however took a lot of trial and error, the first 3 pairs were not up to par in some way or another (halo effect, uncomfortable etc.) my dr helped me thru the process and i couldn’t be happier
I binged watched many of your videos today. Not sure if you’ve mentioned it in a past video that I hadn’t seen yet, but this would’ve been a perfect video to discuss hybrid contact lens options such as the Synergeye brand. I’ve tried them, and I really like them. They offer the clarity of RPG’s but the comfort of soft contacts. For my fit, prescription and location, the were about $90 for each eye and last 6 months
I’m wearing RGP for years. I have a multi focal hard lenses and high myopia and astigmatism. I found them to be the best lenses ever!! Once I got used to them my life changed for good.
I have keratoconus. I also have a damaged nerve on my left eye blocking some of my vision. I have high myopia & astigmatism so I thought contacts were out of the question but my doctor found some soft contacts & after watching your channel to learn. I am loving them so thank you.
Thanks for covering this. I started with the rigid lens when I was 15. Then got the soft lenses when you could sleep in them. I admit the sharpness was always better with the rigid lenses but I hated to remove and clean at night
@@DoctorEyeHealth I prefer the soft only so I don’t have to deal daily with them. The rigid lenses are sharper consistently but also hate that line eyelash crawling underneath.
I've worn soft lenses for about 5 years now. I was previously a RGP lens wearer for many years, (daily wear)but switched to soft lenses from optician recommendation. I found RGP lenses were okay but I was always aware of them being there and got real discomfort when any dust or eyelash would get in-between them. To the point were the eye would stream of tears. I wear monthly Toric now, and they are not stock ones as I have quite a high level of Astigmatism and the right eye is an XR.
@@geraldl1401 You wear RGP lenses? I've spoken to a number of people including an optician who used to wear them who had the same discomfort when dust/debris, eyelash got in-between it.
@@Robert_W7 yes I am wearing them now. I wear BOSTON XO2 multifocal. No reading glasses for this gen x'er. They are ultra permeable class of the newer materials.super comfortable.
I've worn hard lenses since 1970. Actually my very first lenses weren't RGP, but some type of polycarbonate plastic without the ability of gas transfer through the lens. Never an issue with these. I think around 1978 my Dr. Recommended the new RGP saying these are healthier for the eye so I started wearing RGP's. I couldn't tell the difference in terms of vision correction. I still have these lenses to this day. As long as you're careful, don't drop them too many times, have clean hands etc. They last forever. I don't recall a getting used to period. My doctor told me to increase wearing time by one hour per day I recall that Removing the hard lenses was a problem. I couldn't seem to get the hang of it. Finally , I was able to insert and remove them easily. Like removing training wheels from a bike it all fell into place. Present day. My last pair of RGP's I purchased was about 15 years ago. This pair was prescribed for my middle aged reading issues. Called monovision. My dominate eye being my dominate eye is prescribed for distance while the other eye was given a bit weaker prescription. I was told it's like a brain dominate thing where going from distance to close up the brain chooses which eye for reading then goes to the other eye for distance. It took me about 1day to get used to that. I need something stronger because I noticed my vision changing where the mono vision isn't as good. Doctor warned Me that monovision has limits, seems I exploited these limits. Last 18 months or so I experienced floaters in my dominate eye, then 18 months later the other. I just focus past the floaters and I hardly notice them. Floaters is a subject for another day. As I had said, 1970 I started wearing hard lenses until present day I still wear them some of these are the earliest ones from the 1970's . I'm in my 6th decade of life. And love my RGP. I never had an interest I'm soft lenses. I see these as an ongoing expense where as my RGP lenses with minimal care or at times, less than minimal are very forgiving. That's my 2 cents worth.
Well, the 1970's were not "the first" by any means.. Hard lenses had been totally perfected by then. I stated wearing them in 1962, and my late mother had them in 1947...
I don't think rgp is minimal care. You're also supposed to be constantly and thoroughly cleaning them if you actively use them. As opposed to soft dailies, that you trash after use and then open a new one.
Since having Lasik for my far vision, I have had a difficult time finding multi focal contacts that work for me. My reg doc suggested I see a specialist and was fitted for GP lenses today. They were definitely a bit irritating but I'm really hoping they work for me and I'm looking forward to my next appointment when they come in!

@@SiaanLala You bet! I guess after lasik it's tough to get any contacts right. I require multi focal and they just didn't work anymore due to the change in cornea shape. I had my distance corrected with lasik so I still need glasses for reading. I tried SEVERAL things with my eye doc after lasik and finally ended up with ONE contact for my dominant eye. It was pretty expensive going through all the testing and seeing specialists. I"m still glad i did it since my distance is perfect and and the time of surgery both close and distance were messed up. Also, it depend on your diagnosis-mine was age related so I could only have EITHER distance or close up corrected.
Boston XO2 just ordered them so I’ll update you when I get them in, hopefully they work better for my astigmatism because none of the soft lenses work for me
Been wearing gas permeable (hard) lenses for 54 years (not the same pair!). They changed my life. I have severe astigmatism but, even if I could, I wouldn’t wear soft ones because of the higher infection rate in soft lenses.
We’re in the same boat! I have somewhat steep corneas and high myopia. I remember wearing the hard lenses in the 70’s which just covered the pupil and then moved to gas permeable lenses in the 90’s. They are a lifesaver! I am now in mono-vision and wear glasses only for reading. Without my contacts, I can still read without readers!
If it's okay, what's the grade of your astigmatism? Mine is 475 or -4.75 both and currently in the process of soft contacts fitting. I'm just annoyed how the soft lenses move and it's just so blurry. Kinda scared driving with them.
Talked to an ophthalmologist for a LASEK surgery, but he said that I could wear hard lenses as long as 30yrs or 40 yrs for its advantages. And I wear my first hard lenses that were bought almost 10 years ago, (on and off use). Still in good conditions, better comfort on the eyes, no dryness like soft ones. After adaptation process, it gets real comfortable on the eyes. Except dust coming in sometimes, 99% satisfied.
I had wore toric contacts many years ago and had no problem. A few years ago I started wearing a soft contact for my right eye only. I wore them for a few months but had all kinds of trouble getting the contact out of my eye. It would take me 15 minutes or more and I always felt like I was digging my eye out. To make a long story short I stopped using the contract as I felt I was damaging my eye.
I've been wearing high power glasses since I was 2 years old. I'm now 30. 6 months ago I started looking into contacts thanks to this channel. After 5 attempts, I finally got signed off yesterday. Initially tried soft lenses, then went to hard lenses which needed tweaking a few times. I have high astigmatism and require +10.75 power in my left eye. These lenses are great, and being glasses free is amazing.

@@DoctorEyeHealth Thank you. My eye doctor is actually very newly qualified, and I was his first ever RGP patient. It felt like we accomplished something together. Definitely worth the time, effort and perseverance. 6 months ago I didn't even think contacts were viable for high prescriptions. To anyone unsure, try it.
Great video. I used glasses for 45 years until I changed to soft contact lenses. I didn't know that hard contacts still existed until a year ago I met someone who uses them. She can't use soft lenses because her correction is a bit out of the ordinary. Besides what you point out, there are a few more differences: * In Europe, you don't need a prescription for soft lenses. You can just buy them over the counter or online. But you do need a prescription for hard contacts. * You did not say that for hard contacts, you have to repeat that period of getting used to the lenses if you stop and restart using them --- your eyes have to get used to them again. That does not happen with soft lenses, no need to get used to them. * I was surprised you did not mention the oxygenation levels. I understand that hard lens have about 1/2 oxygen permeability of the soft lenses. The Utras I use claim 163Dk/t, and I think the best hard go around 70 or 80. But I have not seen proper technical specs for them, this is just hearsay. * For me, the soft lenses are much harder to put on. It took me months to be able to put them on at first try. Now, after a few years of using them, I changed from single focus to presbyopia and they are sooo soft that I have to re-learn everything again. On my worst days it takes me 30 min trying to put them on. Today it was just 10 min, so not bad. My problem is that somehow the perimeter of the lenses always touches some part of my eye without me being aware, and so they don't stick properly. Grrr, frustrating. For me, changing from glasses to contacts was an amazing experience. And now (just a couple of months ago) the change to presbyopia lenses is another incredible experience. I can read in low light and see well far in the distance without glasses! Amazing. But I prefer to pay the extra price of the soft lenses and the inconvenience of struggling to put them on, than to have to get used to the hard lenses and the risk of lower oxygenation levels.
My first pair was RGP. I still remembered how they glided on my cornea. And no, I will never go back. Although, I do thank them for maintaining my teenage eyes at the same power. My eye power deteriorated in one semester so I was given RGP. After I changed go Dailies total 1, my whole life changed. They feel like non-existent on my eyes.
I have a strong prescription and astigmatism and have been wearing hard contact lenses for about 50 years. I tried soft lenses a few years ago but they simply did not give me the quality vision that I had with hard lenses - and I sometimes found it very difficult to get the soft lenses out of my eyes. So the soft lenses were simply not as convenient as hard lenses for me.

I wore rigid lenses for 40 years. Getting used to them was a 3 month ordeal but after that, I loved them. I could see so much better with the lenses as compared to eyeglasses. Also, my eyes stabilized and I rarely needed a new prescription. They lasted for years before needing replacement. Downsides were that any foreign object caused extreme discomfort and falling asleep with them was not allowed. Sadly, with my chronic blepharitis, I eventually started developing a corneal ulcer and had to stop wearing them. Now I am back to eyeglasses. My eyes took about a year to stabilize requiring 2-3 new prescriptions during that time.
About 22 years ago I used gas permeable lenses. They caused a lot of redness. I ended up getting lasik but now used soft lenses for distance. Despite the cost of the soft lenses I prefer them because of the comfort and convenience factors.
I used to wear Accuvue soft contacts but never achieved great vision with them. Reading and focusing was off with them. I've since changed to biofinity and while they are much better then the acuvue I still struggle reading in dim lighting with them. Any tips doc?
I'm using hard lenses.. they have been pretty tough to get used to.. and this is from using them for over a year of good use.. keep up the great work.. I thoroughly enjoy your videos..
Nice video, but you didn’t mention one of the most common cons of soft CL which is Dry Eye! Comparing it with the hard CL or RGP CL, which are gas permeable and helps the cornea to breath and thus almost no Dry Eye problems!
I have dry and sensitive eyes, rgp's for me are the most comfortable. They dont dry out and sticks like a soft lens. I'm wearing them now and dont feel a thing 👍

i have recently just started wearing soft contact lenses they were comfortable and it felt like magic that i can now see without glasses. However i do have astigmatism and im not sure the current brand im using now is suitable
I had cataract surgery (both eyes) at age 16 and have been wearing hard contact lenses ever since. I am now age 82. I sometimes have difficulty removing my lenses and found your videos very helpful. Thanks.
I wear hard contacts and i love them omg... i have grape shaped eyes so my vision will always be horrible but these help me see sharpe and my night driving is clear and Pristine! I paid about 200 for them!! My last lenses lasted for five years until my daughter broke them lol 😂
I started with soft toric XR soft lenses. I went from Frequency 55s to Pro-Clears. The Pro-Clears were a lot more stable than the Frequency 55s. They weren't great for driving at night though. Was experiencing ghosting of the road reflectors and signs. Then I decided to try RGPs. It took the eye doctor a few tries to get the prescription and shape just right before I was able to see fairly sharply with them. The disadvantages of them such as how vulnerable they were to getting debris between them and my eye and how my vision would shift after a couple days of not wearing them made me go back to soft toric lenses. RGPs have reduced my astigmatism by a lot, but made it impossible to take, like, a week off from wearing them. I usually only wear my contacts when at work. When I'm at home and on my days off, they come right out. In fact, I don't even bother bringing my contacts when I travel now. I've been using Biofinity Toric XRs and switched to Biofinity Toric Multi-Focals and they've given me the best, stable, vision yet. I also went with progressive lenses for my glasses and I've been pretty happy with them.
I wear both its called piggybacking, I am post graft kc, the soft is like a sock to protect the graft, the hard hydrogel contact is to correct the vision and help with dry eye.
@@DoctorEyeHealthI also do piggybacking. It's wonderful, not much irritation like the hard lens. Been on it for more than 9 years. I had C3R in my left eye 7 years ago. Probably may have to do it again to slow down the progression.
I tried hybrids for 6 months. I couldn't get used to them. They were very uncomfortable on me. I had around 8 refittings after the initial fitting. The last refitting I was told they were sitting perfectly on my eyes. Yet I just wanted to rip them out of my eyes after about 10 minutes of wear time. I have issues with contacts in general because of severe allergies, but can somewhat tolerate soft contacts. But soft contacts don't fully correct my extreme myopia. I can see better with my contacts than I can my glasses, though, so I continue to wear contacts.
Love the ortho-k lenses. Been doing it now for about 6 years or so and really enjoy the freedom of no eye drops or cleaners being lugged around. And I now have almost 20/10 vision.
Could you do a video about monovision contacts and multifocals? I used to be happy with my monovision prescription, but with the increased use of computers it's not ideal. My distance prescription has to be lower and my reading higher, so I basically can't see anything clearly! Glasses with progressive lenses prove to be a similar challenge for me.
The thing is I literally just put in the soft lenses the first time ever and I was like *OMG AM I DREAMING?,I CAN SEE NOW*like yea but I didn’t try the hard ones yet but still I’m excited for todays appointment even tho I was shaking really hard!
Hard contacts were awful for me, they were uncomfortable, scraped my eyelids when I blinked, even a speck of dust on them resulted in intense pain, I was always crying, and at one point one of my eyes started to blink uncontrollably do to them. I was recommended hard lenses because my high prescription but honestly I’d sacrifice a little vision not to deal with wearing them again.
I used soft ones for four years, but I had allergies twice a year so I change them to gp ones. With the hard ones eyesight is impeccable, and it costs wayyyy less. And after the initial irritations of wearing them, after about a month, I was used to them, I don't even feel them right now.
I wear hybrid lenses on both eyes, due to my very bad keractonus. This way the hardlense flatterns my cornea and gives me 20/20 vision but the soft outskirt means it sits comfortably on my eye. If i wear glasses im a - 10 and can barely read driving standards. But contacts allow me to reach 20/20. So if you have keractonus i highly recommend hybrids, best of both worlds. Plus you get a plunger to help take them out, so if your iffy with fingers, its so easy. 😊
Doc! you are the real MVP I've learn so much from watching your videos, most optometrists around my area wouldn't even answer my questions or entertain exploring options for contacts. I got soft lenses but I feel they tend to move around alot more than I would like & sometimes I feel like they are sticking to my eye lids or they randomly pop out. Considering the information provided would I be able to benefit from hard lenses or the hybrid ones because those sound like very interesting options to have acquired.
Hi doc, I have high astigmatism (-4cyl and -3cyl). I tried soft contact lenses (Biofinity XR Toric) but it didn't give me 6/6 vision. I also felt some dryness in my eyes while wearing them. So now I will be going for hard lenses, but I am concerned about the comfort. Can you list the top brands and types in hard contacts lenses? A video on this will be great.
I've worn hard contact lenses since I had congenital cataract surgery back in the mid-1960s. I switched to RGPs around 1980. I just recently switched to a new type of RGPs although Its only been a few weeks,. and I don't know the name. They are significantly more comfortable though.
Can you do a video on eye make up and/or moisturizers and cleaning the eye when using these products. Also how this may affect the eye. I just saw a TED talk about diagnosing diseases using the eye. The researcher's area of interest was using the eye to diagnose dementia.
Dear Thank you so much for the information. I did my Lasik treatment 14 years back. Now I got spectacles again with -1.00, if I contact lens the vision is little blur. I want to go back to my contact lens what is the option ? Doctor informed me I dont have other option I need to wear spectacles now. Once in a while I can wear contact lens. Yet they are uncomfortable now.
I asked my optician why our sight deteriorates and they said it was due to hardening of the lens. If true, how can you 'un-harden' or treat this? surely there is a liquid based treatment to keep it from hardening or something you can eat to help keep it in shape ? But also this would make the need for glasses almost redundant and kill off your industry. Would love to see a video on this.
I don't think you would kill the industry since there are many other concerns pertaining to eye health besides vision correction. Even if you can 'unharden' the lens, there are always a small percentage of people that don't react to this cure, probably idiopathic. So I doubt that this will make the eye industry an inactcroism .
Wearing glasses for almost 20yrs of my life because I was born with weak eyesight. And my eyesight is now up to -15 I finally agreed to try the lenses because the shape of my face is kinda ruin because the glasses are a bit heavy. I chose the hard lenses for the first time because I wanted my sight to get better with it, it is hard to get use to it but eventually I will definitely get use to it. It is worth it and also I get weird faces because no one has ever seen me without my glasses lol. But it is worth it and it is amazing.
I have hard contacts as I have keratoconus and as long as the lenses are on my eye correctly everything is fine and have done since 2003 and they last for about 2 years unless I loose them. However I can still feel them when they are not in my eye correctly
I started wearing contacts for the first time on Thursday. Mine for now are trial soft lenses. I wasn’t thrilled when I heard in the office that they need to be changed monthly and I’m considering the hard lenses from what I learned on this video, but I’m scared 😅 At least, when they gave me application & removal instructions, I probably didn’t take more than 5 minutes the first time taking them out. I saw your video of moving the lenses to the white area to ease the removal and that was super helpful, thank you!!! Want to try the hard ones, but I’m stressing over it 🥴

@@jasonm7095 I never did. If I recall correctly, my doctor said I didn’t need them, so she only gave soft lenses. Soft lenses I’m very used to them, but they aren’t meant to be worn for a extended period of time, so after the 12-14 hour remark it’s starts bothering me. Not that it’s unbearable, but enough to make me take them off if I’m home. And the price, the boxes (one for L eye and one for R eye) comes with 6 packs on lenses each, that is about $100-$115 where I get them
Had no idea that multifocal tech was avail until I upgraded to them a few yrs ago. It's totally awesome what 2 little pieces of breathable plastic can do. I don't do reading glasses as it's not a good look for me. Love love love my multifocal RGP lenses. Let's hear more about them. I can see at all distances from reading small print to distance. Multifocal rgp's, simply amazing technology combined with an ultra breathable material is what I wear.❤️
I've tried hard contacts in back in early 1990's. I have vision that was half clear and half blurry. I had not good experience with hard contacts. I had good results in soft contact.
I wear Ortho K lenses!! I broke my glasses like two years ago and my dad (who wears soft lenses) decided to get me my own. The doctor recommended the lenses that can be slept with and so we got those. I put them on every night and they have helped so much with my vision.
I had hard lenses for a month and I hated them! Always felt like I had a hair in my eye and I had tunnel vision, because only a circle in the middle of my sight was sharp. Soft lenses work very well for me, but they are so expensive with my -4 cyl.
I use to wear hard lenses but could not get comfortable with them. My eye lids kept rubbing on the edge of the lens and kept squinting and could not look left or right without turning my head. I got hybrid lenses and feels much more comfortable. Can you do how to clean hybrid lenses?
I live in the UK and have had hard contact lenses since I was 18, I am now 64. I have always got on with hard contact lens (apart from the initial getting use to them). On occasions where I have lost one I keep a spare pack of soft lenses to fall back on while the new hard lens is being made. My Question is, what is the difference between makes of hard contact lens. looking at some websites there are numerous different makes including ones made by the same manufactrer with varies different prices. Obviously if they are all pretty much the same then the cheapest option would be a no brainer. My prescription is a standard type so I don't need any specialist type of lens which I guess would make them more expensive?
The plastics used vary in gas permeability. I prefer a lens that is more robust and wettable, so I use the Boston ES material. The "fit" from your Doctor is the crucial issue. If you are near London, go to Moorfields Eye hospital..
I was wearing Soft lenses for more than 6 year , But unfortunately I had Infection in one of my eye and i was luckily survived my eye. the bacterial infection just near my pupil . I was lucky it was not on pupil . I had to use my glasses for about 5 + months. After checkup , Doctor again suggest me to try Semi soft lenses to reduce the risk of infection. In semi soft lenses , Infection rate is almost negligible. I will try now and then i will decide.. lets see
Can I still wear RGPs after LASIK to correct astigmatism? Or is it much more difficult to achieve a good fit now on the reshaped cornea? (I had high myopia and astigmatism before)
Oh god I need to go to the eye doctor soon. I haven’t been in a little over 5 years and my glasses are scratched to oblivion. Haven’t noticed a significant change in my script, but it’s definitely possible I’ve slowly acclimated over the 5 years lol. Used soft contacts for about a year, but just gradually moved to glasses only because I prefer waking up at the last possible moment. Not a morning person at all. Before that I just never wore glasses and went blind
I have tried both, soft and hard. I never did get used to hard lenses, but then again I wasn't encouraged to keep trying them, I remember they really felt like sand in my eyes which was not easy to get used to. I stopped wearing contact lenses altogether because I found my vision was never good enough since I need multi-focals, and in my opinion they are not there yet for me and I have tried many brands of multi-focal lenses. I am one those people that like to take my progressive glasses off to see close up well, I love doing this, I get to see the details when do this even at age 50+ and do a lot of handwork like embroidery, knitting etc. Hybrid lens sound really cool, and so do the ones that you sleep in and wake up to good vision for the day, I look forward to learning more about these lenses.
I've got quite bad eyes-7,50 and -6 on 21 years of age and its kinda freaking me out cause I get scared I'll go blind, any tips on how to deal with this?

Plenty of people your age are worse than you and in my 40 years experience I would tell you that once you are in your 20’s there will NOT be much worsening to your eyes. Most nearsightedness comes on as YOU GET TALLER...I’m not kidding. If your are not a diabetic then you have VERY little to worry about
I wore RGP lenses for a few years and I loved them. I remember that it took some time to get used to them. I had to go back to glasses because I need prisms in my glasses. One in left eye and two in the right. I could not find contact lenses with prisms.
I have a rare genetic condition called Ocular Albinism along with Kerataconus. I wear Scleral RGP lenses which are about the same size as a soft lens. They have a tear reservoir that you fill with a non-buffered saline. They are a life changer (especially if you have dry eyes) and have improved my vision significantly. I did wear the regular RGP lenses for some time, but due to the shape of my cornea they would not seat properly. The Scleral lenses attach firmly and do not move around (which causes discomfort). They did take a while to get used to, but now I can wear them for at least 8-10 hours before I HAVE to clean them and give my eyes a rest. I try to clean them at least every 4-6 hours just because I have dry eyes as well, but they are fantastic. I use a hydrogen peroxide cleaning system to clean them, but you do need to use a protein remover every now and then. For anyone who has tried contacts or regular RGP lenses, I would highly recommend finding an optometrist who can explore this option with you. Just be aware that you will definitely need to acclimate to the lenses for a week or two. Usually 30 minutes of wear on the first day, then 2 hours the next, and then an additional hour every day until you hit the max of around 8 hours. The cost was high, around $600... but they've lasted at least 5 years. So I estimate that I've saved quite a bit over soft lenses.

I used to have 6 month soft lenses. So comfy, loved them. Then my country or EU or something banned them and I could not switch to 1 month lenses since those always irritated my eyes somewhy. They seemed a bit thinner and flimsier but no clue why my eyes would always go red with the 1 month ones. Dailies are really expensive here. So I am getting Smartsurface PRK in a week now, since I have been unable to wear lenses for a year and can not tolerate wearing glasses. Are the 6-month soft lenses really that detrimental that they had to ban them? And I have heard no one using them in US so maybe already banned there?
@@icdlight9284 Hi! Its almost a year after my PRK now. The first week my vision was so off, tons of blurriness, double vision, ghosting, everything. The second week I still experienced blurriness and ghosting and was a bit anxious as I expected the recovery to be quicker (young person, -3.5 vision, was an easy fix). But then by the end of the second week, everything went to full clarity rather suddenly over 2-3 days. And I have gone to regular checkups ever since, my vision is perfect. Most of the times I don't even remember having to ever wear glasses. At other times I think I have to remove lenses before falling asleep, only to realise this is my actual vision. Only downside is that it seems to me that I see a bit smudging of the lettrs while reading from a screen in a dark environment. So I put on a light when working with a computer in a dark room or sometimes when bingewatching a series with subtitles at night. Or I have always had that and only now realise it? Either way, was so worth it :) would not want to go back to contacts or glasses anymore.

I have had the same rgp lenses for several years now. I would always rip my soft lenses. The only thing I don't like is sometimes my eyes get really red later in the day.
I'm in the process of getting used to hard contact lenses. Honestly speaking it's not easy, but since I'm not able to wear glasses without getting headaches and I have to look at the computer screen for 8 hours a day, it's worth it. With hard lenses my eyes don't get irritated and dry like they did with soft lenses and my doctor told me, in the long term they would be better for my eyes.

I tried soft ones for a couple weeks, but as I am quite young and I have to look at a screen for many hours a day, I wanted to choose the healthiest version for me. My eye doctor recommended me hard contacts because they support the oxigen supply for the eyes and prevent dryness. Although I had a quite hard time getting used to the feeling of hard ones, I would choose them again because I want to do what‘s best for my eyes.
Yes no doubt you can feel them in the beginning but we'll fitting RGP lenses desensitizes quite quickly. It only took 2 weeks for me and I have dry se sitive eyes. I don't even feel them now and are super comfortable.
Love the fact you don't get that dry leechy feel like when soft lenses dry out.

I developed an "allergy" to my soft contacts once and had to wear RGPs. My eye doc did NOT measure them properly and I spent a year wearing hard contacts that did not sit properly on my eye. I couldn't see, since the edge of the lense sat on my pupil- and when they didn't? They sat in my eyelids. 😭
Luckily, I switched doctors and he re-measured and gave me a new pair. Ended up trying soft lenses again (allergy vanished???) since the RGPs were still uncomfortable. I'm honestly too scared to ever go back to RGPs! 😵
I started wearing hard contact lenses in the late 1960's. I loved them! I had severe stigmatatizium . I had Lasix done about 10 years ago. Monovision. I wasn't satisfied because my vision wasn't as clear as with the hard lenses. I am glad to hear I can get the hard lenses again. I am 69 years old now. Very healthy and thankful 🙏

When I needed to switch to RGP lenses after wearing soft lenses for years, I tried to get fitted for them. I saw three eye docs and they were not able to fit me correctly. Either they were too loose or tight and uncomfortable.This was an expensive 3yr process of lenses not fitting right. I discovered with this experience that not alot of eye docs are savvy in fitting this modality nor know how. Finally saw an eye doc that specializes in RGP fits. That was 10 yrs ago.I now wear multifocal RGP lenses in perfect comfort.Proper fit is extremely important with RGP lenses for comfort and long term health. Proper fitting RGP lenses become super comfortable after about 15-20min. Once adapted they are comfortable like soft lenses.

Finally got the right soft lens and solutions then guess what at 33 I needed progressive lenses. So I just wear glasses I'm 64. So I could write a book now. Love watching your videos. Yes I have the same eye doctor been 30 years.

Not sure if you’ve mentioned it in a past video that I hadn’t seen yet, but this would’ve been a perfect video to discuss hybrid contact lens options such as the Synergeye brand. I’ve tried them, and I really like them. They offer the clarity of RPG’s but the comfort of soft contacts. For my fit, prescription and location, the were about $90 for each eye and last 6 months

Thanks for covering this. I started with the rigid lens when I was 15. Then got the soft lenses when you could sleep in them. I admit the sharpness was always better with the rigid lenses but I hated to remove and clean at night

I've worn soft lenses for about 5 years now. I was previously a RGP lens wearer for many years, (daily wear)but switched to soft lenses from optician recommendation. I found RGP lenses were okay but I was always aware of them being there and got real discomfort when any dust or eyelash would get in-between them. To the point were the eye would stream of tears. I wear monthly Toric now, and they are not stock ones as I have quite a high level of Astigmatism and the right eye is an XR.
I have mine on now and I don't feel anything,.......r u sure they were fitting properly?🙏🏻👍

I've worn hard lenses since 1970. Actually my very first lenses weren't RGP, but some type of polycarbonate plastic without the ability of gas transfer through the lens. Never an issue with these. I think around 1978 my Dr. Recommended the new RGP saying these are healthier for the eye so I started wearing RGP's. I couldn't tell the difference in terms of vision correction. I still have these lenses to this day. As long as you're careful, don't drop them too many times, have clean hands etc. They last forever. I don't recall a getting used to period. My doctor told me to increase wearing time by one hour per day I recall that Removing the hard lenses was a problem. I couldn't seem to get the hang of it. Finally , I was able to insert and remove them easily. Like removing training wheels from a bike it all fell into place. Present day. My last pair of RGP's I purchased was about 15 years ago. This pair was prescribed for my middle aged reading issues. Called monovision. My dominate eye being my dominate eye is prescribed for distance while the other eye was given a bit weaker prescription. I was told it's like a brain dominate thing where going from distance to close up the brain chooses which eye for reading then goes to the other eye for distance. It took me about 1day to get used to that. I need something stronger because I noticed my vision changing where the mono vision isn't as good. Doctor warned Me that monovision has limits, seems I exploited these limits. Last 18 months or so I experienced floaters in my dominate eye, then 18 months later the other. I just focus past the floaters and I hardly notice them. Floaters is a subject for another day.
As I had said, 1970 I started wearing hard lenses until present day I still wear them some of these are the earliest ones from the 1970's . I'm in my 6th decade of life. And love my RGP. I never had an interest I'm soft lenses. I see these as an ongoing expense where as my RGP lenses with minimal care or at times, less than minimal are very forgiving.

Well, the 1970's were not "the first" by any means.. Hard lenses had been totally perfected by then. I stated wearing them in 1962, and my late mother had them in 1947...
I don't think rgp is minimal care. You're also supposed to be constantly and thoroughly cleaning them if you actively use them. As opposed to soft dailies, that you trash after use and then open a new one.
Since having Lasik for my far vision, I have had a difficult time finding multi focal contacts that work for me. My reg doc suggested I see a specialist and was fitted for GP lenses today. They were definitely a bit irritating but I'm really hoping they work for me and I'm looking forward to my next appointment when they come in!

@@SiaanLala You bet! I guess after lasik it's tough to get any contacts right. I require multi focal and they just didn't work anymore due to the change in cornea shape. I had my distance corrected with lasik so I still need glasses for reading. I tried SEVERAL things with my eye doc after lasik and finally ended up with ONE contact for my dominant eye. It was pretty expensive going through all the testing and seeing specialists. I"m still glad i did it since my distance is perfect and and the time of surgery both close and distance were messed up. Also, it depend on your diagnosis-mine was age related so I could only have EITHER distance or close up corrected.

Been wearing gas permeable (hard) lenses for 54 years (not the same pair!). They changed my life. I have severe astigmatism but, even if I could, I wouldn’t wear soft ones because of the higher infection rate in soft lenses.

We’re in the same boat! I have somewhat steep corneas and high myopia. I remember wearing the hard lenses in the 70’s which just covered the pupil and then moved to gas permeable lenses in the 90’s. They are a lifesaver! I am now in mono-vision and wear glasses only for reading. Without my contacts, I can still read without readers!
If it's okay, what's the grade of your astigmatism? Mine is 475 or -4.75 both and currently in the process of soft contacts fitting. I'm just annoyed how the soft lenses move and it's just so blurry. Kinda scared driving with them.

Talked to an ophthalmologist for a LASEK surgery, but he said that I could wear hard lenses as long as 30yrs or 40 yrs for its advantages. And I wear my first hard lenses that were bought almost 10 years ago, (on and off use). Still in good conditions, better comfort on the eyes, no dryness like soft ones. After adaptation process, it gets real comfortable on the eyes. Except dust coming in sometimes, 99% satisfied.

I had wore toric contacts many years ago and had no problem. A few years ago I started wearing a soft contact for my right eye only. I wore them for a few months but had all kinds of trouble getting the contact out of my eye. It would take me 15 minutes or more and I always felt like I was digging my eye out. To make a long story short I stopped using the contract as I felt I was damaging my eye.
I've been wearing high power glasses since I was 2 years old. I'm now 30.
6 months ago I started looking into contacts thanks to this channel. After 5 attempts, I finally got signed off yesterday.
Initially tried soft lenses, then went to hard lenses which needed tweaking a few times. I have high astigmatism and require +10.75 power in my left eye.
These lenses are great, and being glasses free is amazing.

My eye doctor is actually very newly qualified, and I was his first ever RGP patient. It felt like we accomplished something together.
Definitely worth the time, effort and perseverance. 6 months ago I didn't even think contacts were viable for high prescriptions.
To anyone unsure, try it.
Great video. I used glasses for 45 years until I changed to soft contact lenses. I didn't know that hard contacts still existed until a year ago I met someone who uses them. She can't use soft lenses because her correction is a bit out of the ordinary.
Besides what you point out, there are a few more differences:
* In Europe, you don't need a prescription for soft lenses. You can just buy them over the counter or online. But you do need a prescription for hard contacts.
* You did not say that for hard contacts, you have to repeat that period of getting used to the lenses if you stop and restart using them --- your eyes have to get used to them again. That does not happen with soft lenses, no need to get used to them.
* I was surprised you did not mention the oxygenation levels. I understand that hard lens have about 1/2 oxygen permeability of the soft lenses. The Utras I use claim 163Dk/t, and I think the best hard go around 70 or 80. But I have not seen proper technical specs for them, this is just hearsay.
* For me, the soft lenses are much harder to put on. It took me months to be able to put them on at first try. Now, after a few years of using them, I changed from single focus to presbyopia and they are sooo soft that I have to re-learn everything again. On my worst days it takes me 30 min trying to put them on. Today it was just 10 min, so not bad. My problem is that somehow the perimeter of the lenses always touches some part of my eye without me being aware, and so they don't stick properly. Grrr, frustrating.
For me, changing from glasses to contacts was an amazing experience. And now (just a couple of months ago) the change to presbyopia lenses is another incredible experience. I can read in low light and see well far in the distance without glasses! Amazing.
But I prefer to pay the extra price of the soft lenses and the inconvenience of struggling to put them on, than to have to get used to the hard lenses and the risk of lower oxygenation levels.
My first pair was RGP. I still remembered how they glided on my cornea. And no, I will never go back. Although, I do thank them for maintaining my teenage eyes at the same power. My eye power deteriorated in one semester so I was given RGP. After I changed go Dailies total 1, my whole life changed. They feel like non-existent on my eyes.
I have a strong prescription and astigmatism and have been wearing hard contact lenses for about 50 years. I tried soft lenses a few years ago but they simply did not give me the quality vision that I had with hard lenses - and I sometimes found it very difficult to get the soft lenses out of my eyes. So the soft lenses were simply not as convenient as hard lenses for me.

I wore rigid lenses for 40 years. Getting used to them was a 3 month ordeal but after that, I loved them. I could see so much better with the lenses as compared to eyeglasses. Also, my eyes stabilized and I rarely needed a new prescription. They lasted for years before needing replacement. Downsides were that any foreign object caused extreme discomfort and falling asleep with them was not allowed. Sadly, with my chronic blepharitis, I eventually started developing a corneal ulcer and had to stop wearing them. Now I am back to eyeglasses. My eyes took about a year to stabilize requiring 2-3 new prescriptions during that time.

About 22 years ago I used gas permeable lenses. They caused a lot of redness. I ended up getting lasik but now used soft lenses for distance. Despite the cost of the soft lenses I prefer them because of the comfort and convenience factors.

I used to wear Accuvue soft contacts but never achieved great vision with them. Reading and focusing was off with them. I've since changed to biofinity and while they are much better then the acuvue I still struggle reading in dim lighting with them. Any tips doc?

Comparing it with the hard CL or RGP CL, which are gas permeable and helps the cornea to breath and thus almost no Dry Eye problems!
I have dry and sensitive eyes, rgp's for me are the most comfortable. They dont dry out and sticks like a soft lens. I'm wearing them now and dont feel a thing 👍

i have recently just started wearing soft contact lenses they were comfortable and it felt like magic that i can now see without glasses. However i do have astigmatism and im not sure the current brand im using now is suitable
I also suffer from Astigmatism. I find the cooper vision toric range amazing
As Katlego mentioned, I trialed many toric contacts. CooperVision Biofinity Toric are by far the best (for me, at least). Good luck!
I had cataract surgery (both eyes) at age 16 and have been wearing hard contact lenses ever since. I am now age 82. I sometimes have difficulty removing my lenses and found your videos very helpful. Thanks.

I wear hard contacts and i love them omg... i have grape shaped eyes so my vision will always be horrible but these help me see sharpe and my night driving is clear and

I started with soft toric XR soft lenses. I went from Frequency 55s to Pro-Clears. The Pro-Clears were a lot more stable than the Frequency 55s. They weren't great for driving at night though. Was experiencing ghosting of the road reflectors and signs. Then I decided to try RGPs. It took the eye doctor a few tries to get the prescription and shape just right before I was able to see fairly sharply with them. The disadvantages of them such as how vulnerable they were to getting debris between them and my eye and how my vision would shift after a couple days of not wearing them made me go back to soft toric lenses. RGPs have reduced my astigmatism by a lot, but made it impossible to take, like, a week off from wearing them. I usually only wear my contacts when at work. When I'm at home and on my days off, they come right out. In fact, I don't even bother bringing my contacts when I travel now. I've been using Biofinity Toric XRs and switched to Biofinity Toric Multi-Focals and they've given me the best, stable, vision yet. I also went with progressive lenses for my glasses and I've been pretty happy with them.
I wear hybrid lenses and love them. I tried soft lenses but my vision wasn't good. Please do a video about hybrid lense. Putting on and removing them.
Sounds like yer eye doc is quite experienced in fitting rigid/hybrid lenses.
I wear acuvue soft contact lenses. They work great for me.
I wear both its called piggybacking, I am post graft kc, the soft is like a sock to protect the graft, the hard hydrogel contact is to correct the vision and help with dry eye.

@@DoctorEyeHealthI also do piggybacking. It's wonderful, not much irritation like the hard lens. Been on it for more than 9 years. I had C3R in my left eye 7 years ago. Probably may have to do it again to slow down the progression.

I tried hybrids for 6 months. I couldn't get used to them. They were very uncomfortable on me. I had around 8 refittings after the initial fitting. The last refitting I was told they were sitting perfectly on my eyes. Yet I just wanted to rip them out of my eyes after about 10 minutes of wear time. I have issues with contacts in general because of severe allergies, but can somewhat tolerate soft contacts. But soft contacts don't fully correct my extreme myopia. I can see better with my contacts than I can my glasses, though, so I continue to wear contacts.
Love the ortho-k lenses. Been doing it now for about 6 years or so and really enjoy the freedom of no eye drops or cleaners being lugged around. And I now have almost 20/10 vision.

Could you do a video about monovision contacts and multifocals? I used to be happy with my monovision prescription, but with the increased use of computers it's not ideal. My distance prescription has to be lower and my reading higher, so I basically can't see anything clearly! Glasses with progressive lenses prove to be a similar challenge for me.
The thing is I literally just put in the soft lenses the first time ever and I was like *OMG AM I DREAMING?,I CAN SEE NOW*like yea but I didn’t try the hard ones yet but still I’m excited for todays appointment even tho I was shaking really hard!
Hard contacts were awful for me, they were uncomfortable, scraped my eyelids when I blinked, even a speck of dust on them resulted in intense pain, I was always crying, and at one point one of my eyes started to blink uncontrollably do to them. I was recommended hard lenses because my high prescription but honestly I’d sacrifice a little vision not to deal with wearing them again.
That sounds like you had a really poor fit

It was really uncomfortable for me too. But I tried them like over 20 years ago, im sure technology has advanced since then.
I have a very specific prescription so I just chose to see 18/20 instead of having a heavy pair of glasses 24/7. soft lenses are great
I used soft ones for four years, but I had allergies twice a year so I change them to gp ones. With the hard ones eyesight is impeccable, and it costs wayyyy less. And after the initial irritations of wearing them, after about a month, I was used to them, I don't even feel them right now.
I wear hybrid lenses on both eyes, due to my very bad keractonus.
This way the hardlense flatterns my cornea and gives me 20/20 vision but the soft outskirt means it sits comfortably on my eye.
If i wear glasses im a - 10 and can barely read driving standards. But contacts allow me to reach 20/20. So if you have keractonus i highly recommend hybrids, best of both worlds. Plus you get a plunger to help take them out, so if your iffy with fingers, its so easy. 😊
Doc! you are the real MVP I've learn so much from watching your videos, most optometrists around my area wouldn't even answer my questions or entertain exploring options for contacts. I got soft lenses but I feel they tend to move around alot more than I would like & sometimes I feel like they are sticking to my eye lids or they randomly pop out. Considering the information provided would I be able to benefit from hard lenses or the hybrid ones because those sound like very interesting options to have acquired.
Hi doc, I have high astigmatism (-4cyl and -3cyl). I tried soft contact lenses (Biofinity XR Toric) but it didn't give me 6/6 vision. I also felt some dryness in my eyes while wearing them. So now I will be going for hard lenses, but I am concerned about the comfort. Can you list the top brands and types in hard contacts lenses? A video on this will be great.
I've worn hard contact lenses since I had congenital cataract surgery back in the mid-1960s. I switched to RGPs around 1980. I just recently switched to a new type of RGPs although Its only been a few weeks,. and I don't know the name. They are significantly more comfortable though.
Can you do a video on eye make up and/or moisturizers and cleaning the eye when using these products. Also how this may affect the eye. I just saw a TED talk about diagnosing diseases using the eye. The researcher's area of interest was using the eye to diagnose dementia.

Thank you so much for the information. I did my Lasik treatment 14 years back. Now I got spectacles again with -1.00, if I contact lens the vision is little blur. I want to go back to my contact lens what is the option ? Doctor informed me I dont have other option I need to wear spectacles now. Once in a while I can wear contact lens. Yet they are uncomfortable now.

I asked my optician why our sight deteriorates and they said it was due to hardening of the lens.
If true, how can you 'un-harden' or treat this? surely there is a liquid based treatment to keep it from hardening or something you can eat to help keep it in shape ?
But also this would make the need for glasses almost redundant and kill off your industry.

maybe you should ask an optometrist instead of hearing about 1 thing and jumping to a bunch of conclusions
I don't think you would kill the industry since there are many other concerns pertaining to eye health besides vision correction. Even if you can 'unharden' the lens, there are always a small percentage of people that don't react to this cure, probably idiopathic. So I doubt that this will make the eye industry an inactcroism .
Only when you reach middle age and need reading glasses..
Wearing glasses for almost 20yrs of my life because I was born with weak eyesight. And my eyesight is now up to -15 I finally agreed to try the lenses because the shape of my face is kinda ruin because the glasses are a bit heavy. I chose the hard lenses for the first time because I wanted my sight to get better with it, it is hard to get use to it but eventually I will definitely get use to it. It is worth it and also I get weird faces because no one has ever seen me without my glasses lol. But it is worth it and it is amazing.

I have hard contacts as I have keratoconus and as long as the lenses are on my eye correctly everything is fine and have done since 2003 and they last for about 2 years unless I loose them. However I can still feel them when they are not in my eye correctly

I have a prescription for both. Still prefer the DT1. The infuse is very comfortable. The DT1 feels like I am not even wearing contacts.
I started wearing contacts for the first time on Thursday. Mine for now are trial soft lenses. I wasn’t thrilled when I heard in the office that they need to be changed monthly and I’m considering the hard lenses from what I learned on this video, but I’m scared 😅 At least, when they gave me application & removal instructions, I probably didn’t take more than 5 minutes the first time taking them out. I saw your video of moving the lenses to the white area to ease the removal and that was super helpful, thank you!!! Want to try the hard ones, but I’m stressing over it 🥴

@@jasonm7095 I never did. If I recall correctly, my doctor said I didn’t need them, so she only gave soft lenses. Soft lenses I’m very used to them, but they aren’t meant to be worn for a extended period of time, so after the 12-14 hour remark it’s starts bothering me. Not that it’s unbearable, but enough to make me take them off if I’m home. And the price, the boxes (one for L eye and one for R eye) comes with 6 packs on lenses each, that is about $100-$115 where I get them

Would love to see more information and better explanations for multifocal contacts. Exactly how do/should they work?
Had no idea that multifocal tech was avail until I upgraded to them a few yrs ago. It's totally awesome what 2 little pieces of breathable plastic can do. I don't do reading glasses as it's not a good look for me. Love love love my multifocal RGP lenses. Let's hear more about them. I can see at all distances from reading small print to distance. Multifocal rgp's, simply amazing technology combined with an ultra breathable material is what I wear.❤️
After getting used to hard contacts, which ones can stay in the eyes longer with comfort, hard or soft lenses?
I tried both hard and soft torric lenses. Soft are more comfortable but ur right, hard lenses give clearer vision.
I've tried hard contacts in back in early 1990's. I have vision that was half clear and half blurry. I had not good experience with hard contacts.
I had good results in soft contact.
I wear Ortho K lenses!! I broke my glasses like two years ago and my dad (who wears soft lenses) decided to get me my own. The doctor recommended the lenses that can be slept with and so we got those. I put them on every night and they have helped so much with my vision.
I had hard lenses for a month and I hated them! Always felt like I had a hair in my eye and I had tunnel vision, because only a circle in the middle of my sight was sharp. Soft lenses work very well for me, but they are so expensive with my -4 cyl.
I use to wear hard lenses but could not get comfortable with them. My eye lids kept rubbing on the edge of the lens and kept squinting and could not look left or right without turning my head. I got hybrid lenses and feels much more comfortable. Can you do how to clean hybrid lenses?
I live in the UK and have had hard contact lenses since I was 18, I am now 64. I have always got on with hard contact lens (apart from the initial getting use to them). On occasions where I have lost one I keep a spare pack of soft lenses to fall back on while the new hard lens is being made. My Question is, what is the difference between makes of hard contact lens. looking at some websites there are numerous different makes including ones made by the same manufactrer with varies different prices. Obviously if they are all pretty much the same then the cheapest option would be a no brainer. My prescription is a standard type so I don't need any specialist type of lens which I guess would make them more expensive?
The plastics used vary in gas permeability. I prefer a lens that is more robust and wettable, so I use the Boston ES material. The "fit" from your Doctor is the crucial issue. If you are near London, go to Moorfields Eye hospital..
I was wearing Soft lenses for more than 6 year , But unfortunately I had Infection in one of my eye and i was luckily survived my eye. the bacterial infection just near my pupil . I was lucky it was not on pupil . I had to use my glasses for about 5 + months. After checkup , Doctor again suggest me to try Semi soft lenses to reduce the risk of infection. In semi soft lenses , Infection rate is almost negligible. I will try now and then i will decide.. lets see
Can I still wear RGPs after LASIK to correct astigmatism? Or is it much more difficult to achieve a good fit now on the reshaped cornea? (I had high myopia and astigmatism before)

Haven’t noticed a significant change in my script, but it’s definitely possible I’ve slowly acclimated over the 5 years lol.
Used soft contacts for about a year, but just gradually moved to glasses only because I prefer waking up at the last possible moment. Not a morning person at all. Before that I just never wore glasses and went blind
I have tried both, soft and hard. I never did get used to hard lenses, but then again I wasn't encouraged to keep trying them, I remember they really felt like sand in my eyes which was not easy to get used to. I stopped wearing contact lenses altogether because I found my vision was never good enough since I need multi-focals, and in my opinion they are not there yet for me and I have tried many brands of multi-focal lenses. I am one those people that like to take my progressive glasses off to see close up well, I love doing this, I get to see the details when do this even at age 50+ and do a lot of handwork like embroidery, knitting etc. Hybrid lens sound really cool, and so do the ones that you sleep in and wake up to good vision for the day, I look forward to learning more about these lenses.
Have you tried multifocal rgp's? They are custom fitted.
I've got quite bad eyes-7,50 and -6 on 21 years of age and its kinda freaking me out cause I get scared I'll go blind, any tips on how to deal with this?

Plenty of people your age are worse than you and in my 40 years experience I would tell you that once you are in your 20’s there will NOT be much worsening to your eyes. Most nearsightedness comes on as YOU GET TALLER...I’m not kidding. If your are not a diabetic then you have VERY little to worry about
I wore RGP lenses for a few years and I loved them. I remember that it took some time to get used to them. I had to go back to glasses because I need prisms in my glasses. One in left eye and two in the right. I could not find contact lenses with prisms.
I have a rare genetic condition called Ocular Albinism along with Kerataconus. I wear Scleral RGP lenses which are about the same size as a soft lens. They have a tear reservoir that you fill with a non-buffered saline. They are a life changer (especially if you have dry eyes) and have improved my vision significantly. I did wear the regular RGP lenses for some time, but due to the shape of my cornea they would not seat properly. The Scleral lenses attach firmly and do not move around (which causes discomfort). They did take a while to get used to, but now I can wear them for at least 8-10 hours before I HAVE to clean them and give my eyes a rest. I try to clean them at least every 4-6 hours just because I have dry eyes as well, but they are fantastic. I use a hydrogen peroxide cleaning system to clean them, but you do need to use a protein remover every now and then. For anyone who has tried contacts or regular RGP lenses, I would highly recommend finding an optometrist who can explore this option with you. Just be aware that you will definitely need to acclimate to the lenses for a week or two. Usually 30 minutes of wear on the first day, then 2 hours the next, and then an additional hour every day until you hit the max of around 8 hours. The cost was high, around $600... but they've lasted at least 5 years. So I estimate that I've saved quite a bit over soft lenses.

I used to have 6 month soft lenses. So comfy, loved them. Then my country or EU or something banned them and I could not switch to 1 month lenses since those always irritated my eyes somewhy. They seemed a bit thinner and flimsier but no clue why my eyes would always go red with the 1 month ones. Dailies are really expensive here. So I am getting Smartsurface PRK in a week now, since I have been unable to wear lenses for a year and can not tolerate wearing glasses.
Are the 6-month soft lenses really that detrimental that they had to ban them? And I have heard no one using them in US so maybe already banned there?
In Germany or Austria soft lenses are not banned

@@icdlight9284 Hi! Its almost a year after my PRK now. The first week my vision was so off, tons of blurriness, double vision, ghosting, everything. The second week I still experienced blurriness and ghosting and was a bit anxious as I expected the recovery to be quicker (young person, -3.5 vision, was an easy fix). But then by the end of the second week, everything went to full clarity rather suddenly over 2-3 days. And I have gone to regular checkups ever since, my vision is perfect. Most of the times I don't even remember having to ever wear glasses. At other times I think I have to remove lenses before falling asleep, only to realise this is my actual vision.
Only downside is that it seems to me that I see a bit smudging of the lettrs while reading from a screen in a dark environment. So I put on a light when working with a computer in a dark room or sometimes when bingewatching a series with subtitles at night. Or I have always had that and only now realise it?
Either way, was so worth it :) would not want to go back to contacts or glasses anymore.

I've worn glasses almost my whole life (27 of my 37 years on this earth), and after getting used to putting on contacts, I haven't looked back. My world has changed, and I just enjoy things having glasses wouldn't let me.
