Once again, Thank you to your wife. lol Symphonic metal Dutch band originally called Sahara Dust. Guitarist ,and harsh vocalist, Mark Jansen formed the band in 2002 after parting ways with his former band After Forever. AF, which he co-founded, was the first band Floor Jansen joined at age 16. (Mark and Floor are not related)
Lead singer, Simone Simons, switched to this singing style, from pop, in training after hearing Nightwish with their original lead singer ,Tarja Turunen. Simone was 17 when she started with EPICA.
Knew you'd love Arien on drums. Coen Janssen on keyboards often runs around the stage when not playing. Guitarist Isaac Delahaye, and bassist Rob van der Loo complete the current lineup.
Consign to Oblivion is one of the heavier songs, and the title track to their second album (they now have 8 records), and is often the show closing song.
For more from them: the Skelton Key, Beyond the Matrix, kingdom of Heaven Pt 3, Cry For the Moon, and heavier songs like universal death Squad and Essence of Silence.
The 2 songs Floor joined them for at retrospect are Sancta Terra and Stabat Mater Dolorosa.

Arien van Weesenbeek is an absolute monster, on the kit. And yet, such an unassuming, almost shy guy off it.
So good top see Arien getting some love. Most reactors barely comment on the drums, but my man is back there doing work. Shout out to Rob on Bass too.
That whole band is awsome. Well oiled machine :)
There is a Video on Epicas official channel where Arien does a playthrough of Abyss of Time where you just see him doing all the drumming in the studio probably something a drummer would love to look at

With the perspective on drums, the Epica song I would recommend is "Kingdom of Heaven" (part 1). Beside being one of their overall masterpieces, it is very heavy on drums. Especially in the first half, the drums are very prominent. It is also a song with compley rythms and many rythm changes. According to Mark Jansen, the main writer of the song, there is even one transition part that Ariën had a really hard time playing.
Now the unfortunate news is that there is no HQ public live version of this song. The best version from Omega Alive is unfortunately not public. The most popular version is a fan based video mixing an amateur recording from a concert in Mexico with the sound from the album.

Epica is Epic (well deserved name for the band).
Singers name is Simone Simons and classically trained .
Simone and Floor are good friends!
Harsh Vocals Mark Jansen, no relation to Floor Jansen, he is ex-After forever member (Floor's first band)
And On drums is Ariën van Weesenbeek.
WHEN Epica hit hard, they are heavier than Nightwish. But they also have some really beautiful, soft and tender ballads. And they often ”cover themselves” in completely different styles (jazz, Irish folk, klezmer…).
Being familiar with all their stuff, they still keep me amazed by their talent and epicness, which is just keep growing for almost 20 years. It’s like too much to be from this world, especially when you realize they have about 10 masterpieces in this scale, ballads that will make you cry, countless top-notch badass songs, great covers, orchestral and acoustic versions, insightful lyrics and great stage presence.. enough talent for 20 bands combined. And.. they’re so down-to-earth and generous to their fans.

The retrospect concert was nearly 3,5 hours (THE concert from epica). Talk about stamina.
This song specifically is always the closer. So he drums like this after 2+ hours of a regular concert

From 2001 - 2008 Ariën used to play for a band called God Dethroned, in case you'd like to check out some of his earlier work.

Coen is the keyboardist and absolutely one of the biggest characters in this genre. I believe you saw his free form keyboard, and him riding it. I think I mentioned previously to watch for that. Several times in this performance, he also launches it across the stage then runs below to intercept it on the other end. There is a performance where he doesn’t make it on time. A few laughs and shoulder shrugs with his band mates!

There are many great drum play-throughs by Arien Weesenbeek of songs like Universal Death Squad and Abyss of time on YT!
He really is a great drummer but I often wonder what type of pedals he is using maybe a double on each bass to get that speed consistent. As a drummer I know to sustain that through a whole concert is insane.
I was always interested in the Axis direct drive pedals, but I think the highest quality pedal I've put to use the most was a set of Tama Speedcobras. Good for people with big feet or heel-toe technique users since the pedalboards are long AF! I use some basic gibraltars now and honestly theyre great, I like my springs super loose :D

Bring a drummer, I'm sure you're familiar with Dream Theater. If not, check out The Dance of Eternity.
And if you want to go old school, watch Emerson, Lake and Palmer do Rondo. There's a 7-10 minute drum solo that will blow you away.
Arien certainly has some stamina. There was one funny moment during one of the videos I watched, I think it was part of the Retrospect live performance. At the end of one track Simone turned and looked at the drummer and said “I think Arien has a couple of batteries up his arse”

I just realized as you mentioned the blast beat at the end of the song, how good bands time their lights or pyros in synch!
Regarding the vocals:
With Floor (Nightwish) and Simone (Epica) you got to know two of the great Dutch symphonic metal singers. There are more to discover:
A unique singer of her own is Sharon den Adel from „Within Temptation“. They are incredible as well. First songs to listen to might be „And we run feat. Xzibit“ (symphonic metal meets rap), „Paradise (What Bout us) feat. Tarja“ (the first singer of Nightwish), „Angels“, „Ice Queen“, „Stand my Ground“....
Charlotte Wessels formerly from „Delain“ is the next to explore: „Masters of Destiny“ is a must. Delain did a couple of songs with Marco from Nightwish like „Sing to me feat. Marco Hietala“
Anneke van Giersbergen (former from The Gathering) did a great duet with Sharon den Adel: Within Temptation „Somewhere“ together with a full orchestra.
Another symphonic metal band to mention is Xandria from Germany. They had for some time another awesome Dutch singer: Dianne van Giersbergen. Try „Nightfallv“.

I have a great one for you. Same epic drummer (Ariën van Weesenbeek), seen up close in a track he did with another great vocalist from the Dutch metal scene, Marcela Bovio. The band is called "Dark Horse White Horse" consisting of Marcela (vocals), Ruben Wijga (keys) and Jord Otto (guitar).
The guys are two ex-members of ReVamp, one of Floor Jansen's former legendary bands. Marcela also sings in MayaN, a project of Epica's Mark Jansen. It's Epica but a tad bit heavier still. DHWH is awesome, MaYaN is awesome, Arien is the drummer for MaYaN as well. And Marcela is fantastic.
Did they influence Nightwish or did Nightwish influence them? I think this dude is actually better than Jukka or Kai and I love both of those guys. Damn, this guy is sharp on those kick drums!!!

People will certainly suggest a lot of Epica songs. I mean, 8 studio albums… Arien also plays in MaYaN, even more heavy, less „Disney-vibs“ and on the EP of Dark Horse White Horse. Both really worth checking out. On Dark Horse White Horse, Arien‘s drumming is different, there you can really hear what a diverse drummer he really is.

@@IronSmokeLTD You'll love the singer of MaYan too; Marcella Bovio is an extremely talented singer, originally Mexican but nowadays also living in the Netherlands, cradle of many a great female Metal lead singer (Anneke van Giersbergen, Simone Simons whom you just watched, Floor Jansen, and more .....must be something in the water)
Been away for 4-5 days as wife and I have moved from the UK to Indonesia, so i'm catching up on some reactions now. So it's so good to see you reacting to this one by Epica. Great reaction again, plus it's so good to get it broke down by someone who knows and recognises the quality of the drumming. Not so much drumming on the next one, which should be Kingdom of Heaven part3 or perhaps Skeleton Key.

And Septicflesh heavy and brutal, the vocalist is a real powerful growler. Both bands are symphonic death metal. But MaYaN has two female vocalists, one of them is Marcela Bovio (Dark horse white horse and Ayreon) and Mark's Italian girlfriend Laura Macri she is a full blown opera singer.
