I don't think any Nightwish fans will be upset about your statement. Epica is absolutely insanely good as a band. And both bands have drifted very far apart in styles, so there is no real direct competition. Life-long Nightwish fan, starting with the demos in 1997, but I gotta say, Epica has been, and going from their newly released song, will be for quite some time be one of my favorite bands too. And yes, I second the other commenters: "Epica - Design your Universe @ Retrospect"
I agree. I don't think direct comparisons can be made between two such excellent bands. Well, they're more than just bands. The chemistry between the members of both is clear. Neither phones a performance in, and they're friends away from the stage. Nightwish will always be my favourite, but I love what Epica do. 👍♥️
I've yet to meet Nightwish fans who aren't fans of Epica and vice-versa. These two are top tier symphonic metal bands with different approaches and sounds. We may have preferences but it would be stupid to not appreciate the musicianship and work that goes into both bands' work.

This song is from their 2nd album released in 2005 and you can imagine how they evolved since then. Anyhow they’re still ending all their concerts with this one.

Some facts for you:
1. The harsh vocals where done by Mark Jansen (not related) he is both the co-founder of After Forever and the founder of Epica. He also has another band called MaYan.
2. The keyboard player Coen Janssen (als not related, and yes his last name is with a double s) has his keyboard on a platform on wheels connected to a U shaped rail system that goes behind the drums from side to side. The other keys he uses (not in the video) is a curved one he can wear around his wast.
Coen is the most rock star keyboardist ever! He's an absolute joy to watch pull the wackiest stuff on scene. He'll body surf or play is portable keyboard in the middle of the crowd. He's certainly knows how to entertain, he's not the type to just stand in the back and being entirely ignored and forgotten.

As much as I love Nightwish, I have to say that Epica is a MAJOR force to contend with. Mark Jansen is like Tuomas, his head is FULL of all sorts of stuff. He has written about QUANTEM, for Pete's sakes!!!
and then, this master peace ? "Epica - Design Your Universe - Retrospect live". the 9:57 long version is the best. I told you, I was sure you'll love Epica ... and the drummer ;).
I was in this incredible live (my birthday gift from my friends). I'll remember it all my life !

As a (now) 44 year old metal head living in Paris, I completely lost my mind for the last 6 minutes of this show live 5 years ago. I ve done probably 80 metal concert in my life but this specific Consign to Oblivion is without no hesitation in my top 3 ever (with du Hast and Full Moon madness of moonspell). Epica is now the only real successor of Tristania who, for me with Gathering and Theatre of Tragedy, are the founding trinity of symphonic metal

LOVED that you LOVED this song / performance.And you were ABSOLUTELY right, EPICA is a Team, on and outside stage. The entire band participates of the writing process. That's why they Always come up with Amazing records. They never disappoint ( Check out their brand new single Abyss of Time ). They also have so much fun on stage. Coen, the keyboard guy is hilarious. He even crowd-surfs with a portable semicircular keyboard.

The energy at this performance must have been mental. That drummer going off like a fricken machine gun. Simone's vocals are beautiful :D. The harsh vocals are also amazing and powerful! I had just finished going through all the vids I needed to watch and then this popped up :D perfect timing!

I know there's a video out there of each band member talking about their instruments and set-up. The keyboard player shows the special developed stage track for his keyboard and how he controls the backing track during the performance (quite a stack of computers he actually controls). The drummer talks about his kit and how he manages to get those ridiculously fast base beats (he "cheats"; there's some kind of trigger involved). The guitar players talk about their Ibanez, Les Paul, and Dingwall for the bass player.
It's not a long video but very informative.

Favorite band, and their drummer is called 'the beast' by the band..... well earned i reckon lol. This song is always the closer. And their retrospect concert was 3.5 hours of.... this. Legends say he runs on cheeseburgers 🤘😎🤘

You were right. Ariën van Weesenbeek uses Pearl drums (with Remo drumhead, Balbex sticks and Amedia cymbals, just in case you wanted to know).
Almost two years later and you haven't done an Epica song since. Try: the essence of silence live in Brussels, or Stabat mater Dolorosa from the Retrospect concert, they bring a metalcrowd a classical hymn and it's amazing.

I went to their gig like 9-10 years ago. I was early and I was on the very back before even the warm up band started. Ariën came from a random door and I just froze since I used to play drums for ages and he was one of my heroes. He had the widest smile and said "Hi!" to me. I felt absurd even if it was just a little thing. Later on I noticed he was watching the warm up band's drummer like a hawk (from the backstage). I don't even remember who they were, but he was enjoying the show a lot. The drummer wasn't even in the same league, but he clearly enjoyed and respected him. Says a lot about a person.
There's a reason why Nightwish and Epica are the top Titans of Symphonic Metal...Nightwish is my absolute favorite band, and Epica is top 5, so no matter the comparisons, they're both just absolutely astounding.
I mean a joint tour post-Covid would shatter the Earth.

I love Arien one of my favorite drummers not only in Epica but also in Mayan. And in fact there are two Drum play-through videos of "Universal Death Squad" and "The Essebce of Silince", you should check them out.

In Epica retrospect consert there are a drum solo between Cry for the moon and Sancta terra. No nothing of drumsolo more the there is one there(and a funny remark from Simone to the drummer) if you are interested.

I've seen Epica at least 4, maybe 5 times live, the most out of any band I've seen live. They are most definitely my favorite band to see live. Their shows are just epic.
Epica definitely lives up to their name! You'll probably want to check out Design Your Universe, Reverence (Living in the Heart), Unleashed, and Chasing the Dragon ;-)

I'm just here to revisit that concert. Awesoms show, awesome lineup and awesome atmosphere. Glad you really liked the song and yes, Arie is such an underrated drummer. He also plays in MaYaN (together with Mark, who plays guitar and does the growls in Epica) and a brandnew band: Pale Horse (Both Pale Horse and MaYaN feature Marcela Bovio on vocals, such a great singer)

If that friend of yours is convinced keyboard players can't be rockstars, I'm sure they'll say the same about chellists, violinists or flutists? In that case you should definitely show them some live performances of Ayreon. Maaike Peterse (chello), Ben Mathot (violin) and Jeroen Goossens (flutes etc.) do an outstanding job rocking out during those performances. Good examples would be "Day Sixteen: Loser" or "Age of Shadows", both from the Ayreon Universe concert.
I had seen Epica in November 2008 in little Montpelier club and they were amazing.

Epica deserves its name! You should also check out "Design your universe Retrospect Live" from them. It goes around 9 Minutes but it's one of the most epic songs and performances of them!
You should listen to Eluveitie and then you will see Metal Rock Stars playing the flute, violin and hurdy gurdy.. try the song ''KING'' you will not regret!

He, I love when people discover the real EPICA... Amazing band, and yes, Arien is "the beast", IMO the best drummer in this planet. Just for your information, Symphonic metal genre was invented by Mr. Christopher Johnson, mastermind of the swedish band THERION (the other band that completes the holy trinity of the genre and still my favorite band) with the album "Theli" (1996). I hope you will also react to them, my friend, and also to HAGGARD, another amazing band from Germany...
And if you want more of this genre: WITHIN TEMPTATION and DELAIN (Netherlands), XANDRIA (Germany), PENUMBRA (France), SIRENIA (Norway), and IMPERIAL AGE (Russia)...

If you want to listen to something else from them you might be interested in listening to "Once upon a nightmare" The song itself is based upon an old horrific Nordic fairy-tale transformed to a Poem by Wolfgang von Goethe (basically the German Shakespeare) called The Erlking (Der Erlkönig) . The musical buildup is like the soundtrack of a movie with of sense foreboding of the tragedy about to happen. The story is about a father racing through the night to get help for his sick son. That, in his fever-state, is having visions of goblin king trying to seduce him to enter the land of the dead. No growling in this song and Simone just sounds divine. The tragic conclusion makes this a piece of art. If you are not having goosebumps by the end of the song i would consult a doctor. :) Beneath you will find the original version and literal English translation of the poem mentioned. I'll be honest, its nice to see a reaction channel that doesn't seem like they're "trying too hard" to react, so to say.
You should check out Poets of the Fall, they're not the heaviest, but they definitely have a unique sound. I'd probably start with Carnival of Rust
For me, the symphonic trifecta is Nightwish, Epica, and Within Temptation.

Someone I think you should check out for your reactions is Ne Obliviscaris' Drummer Dan Presland. Look for his studio play through of Devour Me Colosis.

Epica is amazing, but there are more great Dutch metalbands. You should definitly check out "Dear Mother" With their debut album "Bulletproof". They are a new dutch metalband formed by ex-Delain guitarist Merel Bechtold and ex-Delain drummer Joey de Boer. They teamed up with David "Pear" Hruska as their vocalist. Its realy worthwhile!
I recently found them and bought the album right away, they're incredible!

Funny, so Floor and Simone are good friends. And as far as I know, they also exchange ideas. That said Floor is married to the Sabaton Drummer Hannes van Dahl. So you might have a look at Sabaton and then to Aeryon and quite sure you will find out most of them are somehow connected.

This song is exactly why I hate that Sancta Terra is what most reactors end up listening to first, because it's an easy transition from Nightwish given it has Floor on the live version...Epica is so much more than "that band that had Floor guest sing on once" and this song is proof :)
