[Performance Place website low back article excerpt] Hip flexor pain can wreak havoc on your love for running. Many of us run for weight loss or because it’s something we feel we “need to do” to be healthy. But not Julie. She simply loved the act of running!
A 10-minute marathon runner in her mid-40s, Julie would typically run five days per week. Some days she would run in track groups, rising to the challenge when her friends motivated her to get faster. Other times, she relished the solitude of solo runs.
Running was Julie’s “fix.” So when a cluster of symptoms started keeping her from doing what she loved, she knew she needed to take action. She came to Performance Place® Sports Care after seven months of unsuccessful attempts at treating the pain. I knew a detailed examination and proper guidance on how to decrease her symptoms would get her on the right track.
    How It All Started
About 10 months ago, Julie began to notice hip flexor and sit bone pain when she ran. Since she didn’t do anything to create it, she thought it would go away on its own-just like most of her minor running-related issues had in the past.
    But this time was different.
Soon, her hip flexor and sit bone were starting to ache at the very first step of her morning run, causing her pain for the entire duration. Her sit bone region would feel aggravated all day, especially exacerbated when she sat for long periods of time at work. The pain weighed on Julie’s mind. She wondered what she could do to make it go away.
When Julie couldn’t stand the aching any longer, she decided to take a break from running for a few days. Her hip flexor pain stopped, so she made the difficult decision of not running for two weeks.
Although it was painful to give up running, she hoped the pause would give the condition time to improve. And it did-until she hit the track again.
Just one minute into Julie’s first run in weeks, the pain surged back in full force. Frustrated, she decided to seek help.
    What Didn’t Work
Julie started by exploring the typical healthcare route. But she quickly became irritated when her primary care doctor suggested rest and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications. She had already tried rest, to no avail, and she didn’t like the idea of medication.
Unsatisfied, Julie searched for a better solution.
Her next stop was to see a physical therapist who was highly recommended by one of her friends. Physical therapy was covered by Julie’s insurance, minus deductible and copay, so she decided to give it a try.
Under her physical therapist’s guidance, Julie tried to remedy her problems with a daily 15-minute routine consisting of stretching, glute strengthening and hip mobility drills. As her inpatient care, she received tool-assisted soft tissue work. But despite two months of diligently following this plan, her sit bone was still tender while sitting at work. And she still hadn’t returned to running.
Frustrated by the lack of progress, Julie continued searching for a real solution.
Next, she visited a chiropractor suggested by a friend whose sciatica had improved under his care. Julie received adjustments and soft tissue work two times per week, which was covered partially by her insurance. But after three months, she saw little improvement.
At this point, Julie was beyond frustrated. It had been five months since she was able to run, and there was still no real solution in sight. She decided to search the Runner’s World forum for more ideas on how to loosen up her hip flexor. After learning about the Active Release Technique, she visited a specialist who cost $150 per 15-minute session-not a penny covered by her insurance. After two months, the treatment yielded no improvement.

I have seen many specialists physios etc and had coccyx removed, back locked totally with 12 months off work, it cost me a small fortune and a marriage.. Pain at 10/10 and totally disabled during time and fed drugs that made me throw up... could not sit at all because of stabbing pain.. No one could help me, nearly ended it except for my young kids.. This video is amazing using the Squat test first, the disc exercise was a good improvement BUT the Ab Wall exercise gave me full depth in the squat.. Not one practioner or specialist gave me a squat test! Pathetic and incompetent.. THIS LADY IS A LIFE SAVER!! FOREVER GRATEFULL - THANK YOU..

Our teenage daughter, who plays high level soccer, was injured a year ago, and struggled to get better ever since. During this time, we spent $7,000 out of pocket, she saw 6 doctors, 6 PTs, 2 chiropractors, MRIs, MRA, X-rays, and still couldn't train with 100% effort without pain. We saw Dawne and Sebastien on this channel, and decided to give them a shot as had nothing to lose.
After the first Virtual Appointment with Dawne, her pain went away the very next day, and have been able to train and play with no pain. We have to say, Dawne did not force us to purchase any program as all she did was test our daughter to see what could be causing the pain. In addition to seemingly solve 12 months of frustration, we were really amazed of how honest their approach was to patients well being, and not just about selling. Our daughter is now on a strengthening program, and chugging along just fine.
    Thanks again Dawne and Sebastien.

I have hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and majority of my joints are effected including my right hip. I’ve been to physiotherapists and other health professionals and all I got told is that I need to strengthen it but ALL the exercises hurt so bad, last time I went to the physio I couldn’t move for almost two days. Hip flexor syndrome was NEVER talked about and I was never informed it was a thing until I stumbled across this video. This makes so much sense why some moves hurt more than others and that I have been doing a couple of the stretches instinctively. I just feel so validated and that I’m not imagining my pain. Thank you for this video and thank you for explaining it so clearly

Hi Chris. Thanks for commenting. Yes surgeries are know to be the "last resort" but most people are not aware of ALL of their options first. Sometimes this is from having a healthcare provider that is not knowledgable about the options and sometimes it is from people only wanting what insurance provides. Insurances do not cover many excellent treatments... but they work!

I tried the lung type exercise. My provocative move was standing on one leg and raising the other knee. Before the excercise my right knee max elevation was about 10cm below my left knee max elevation. After 30 reps I tested my maximum knee raise and my right knee was almost to the same height as my maximum level with my left. Thanks so much. This will become part of my daily routine.

    • @Performance-Place-chiropractor
      @Performance-Place-chiropractor  Рік тому

Hey thanks for reaching out. Yeah sadly to say L5 S one and L4 L5 are the most common regions where people will have problems with her lower back. Sometimes it’s from disc herniation‘s, sometimes it’s from larger disc injuries, and sometimes it’s from simple maladaptive and or movement compensation from past injuries. I tend to think movement compensations or a bigger factor in people who have experienced more than 3 to 4 episodes with there low back over the years. With that being said I have no idea what’s going on with you until I learn more about you. If you’d like some help I need to learn more about what’s going on, learn more about what bothers your area, and actually watch what your move-in‘s look like. I had an operation a year ago ( June 25) went to rehab for 3 months it actually felt fine. Got a hernia operation in December so I didn't do anything for 2 months. After that my hip has been a mess. I went to rehab again ( 2 months) I have had injections. I had another mri which showed it's not torn. I have been seeing a message therapist for 2 months ( $1500 later) . After I seen my doctor today he has me seeing another doctor to get injections in my hip flexors to see if that's it and also to see if I have a hernia( which I don't) this video helped my instantly!!!! Hi I think I have hip and groin flexor pain. It started last year when I had to stop my running club due to covid so just stopped running. It seemed like uti pain and symptoms. It would hurt by my hip but down a bit when I turned over in bed. It would wake me as it was a paintful pull. I was on antibiotics every few week for months as they weren't working. Then urology prescribed me 4 months of antibiotics i still had the pain so I read about doing the 90 degree angle one so tried that and it kept the pain at bay. Last two days though I've had the pain again.

Movement 3+4 are probably the most common fixes for athletes. (I would do both, as strengthening the abdominal wall during hip flexion is key to hip loading)
Movements 1 / 2 are more niche but could be more common for non-athletes who spend too much time sitting and are dealing with hip flexor shortening.

Hey there! I’m glad you checked out some videos. A lot of the versions that we do on UA-cam are for people who can get on and off the ground. However, there are a lot of variations that can be done standing or even seated. We don’t have these variations on UA-cam since the most common ones are the ones used on the floor. And when people have minor variations in their case, we’d like to customize the exercise for them, rather than create more discomfort at the knee just by guessing. Consider reaching out to us as we have virtual and in person options to help coach you through the app appropriate exercise. Every exercise is tested to see if it has the appropriate results and comfort for the hips and knees. Just an email or call info@p2sportscare.com or 714-502-4243

All I really have is a permanent numbness in my top left to left side "Thigh Muscle!"
When seated, looking at my thigh muscle from the top.
Taking a straight line through the centre of my thigh muscle from hip to knee, taking that line and dividing the thigh into four quarters. It's the left front to left side quarter of the muscle that is permanently numb.
I sometimes get pins and needles in it, other than that it remains numb? Could this be flexor related? Do you have any suggestions for me?
