- I'm repotting my French Hybrid Lilac from it's nursery pot into a smaller container and pruning the roots to create a nice radial root base.

It doesn't matter how long I have been working on my bonsai I am still nervous about the number of roots I remove. I've just finished all of my root-bound larches and some have very few roots left to grow from! That is why I always come back and watch one or two of your root pruning videos. It reassures me that there may still be hope...

I’m actually surprised you left that one semi thick root after that “Edward Scissor Hands” root pruning. Nice flare at the bottom of the trunk. Looks like it’s off to a great start. Thanks, keep growing

i could see a compact Parisian styled penjing/diorama in the future with this tree (maybe have a little person at a table sipping an espresso 😂☕). many different avenues to take, regardless am looking forward to seeing its development.

I actually did a lot of reporting my orchards.
I enjoy working with orchards and being able to watch them grow so beautifully.
I thought this was going in a much different direction when it started with you quickly marching towards the greenhouse in your Food Security garb.
Your discipline to your process, brother, just fantastic to see it in progress. Roots/nebari, trunk, then branches…c’est la vie

Namaste Nigel sir, I just felt that when you cleaned the root base, you had like 100$(roots) cutting that thick one bought it down to 10$, yet still you cut down few and finally 3$ left over..! Not sure how many of us here, dare to do such severe root pruning. Hope this tree survives and we will it soon in your future update vedio, few weeks from now

Also, you might be interested to know if you don't already, that lilac is part of the oleoacaea (olive) family, like privet too. So no wonder the wood was tough to cut!

@Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone I just read my previous comment and I didn't mean to insult the tree either, it's great, especially for its first year. The trunk and branch structure looks really nice.
You got more nuts than me.. good God man that's almost all the roots.. I love my collected lilac tree.. I found it already dorfed in the woods behind my house.. it hasn't flowered yet and it took me 6 months to figure out what the hell I dug up because im new to this plant stuff lol..

I look forward to seeing how this develops. Lilacs are among my favorite flowering trees, but I haven't considered them as bonsai, as the flowers are so big. Did you keep any of the roots to try some root cuttings?

I got myself a Japanese cherry from a garden center that revealed the worst root system when I repotted it. It was a curled mess, so I cut off probbaly 80%. After the rather severe root pruning it stayed dormant for quite a while but then some branches showed small leaves. I thought from here on it'll get better, but it seems that everytime new leaves came out some snails immediately ate those overnight. I think without the mean snails the tree would've recovered, but like that there's not much hope left...
I hope I can get my hands on a new Japanese cherry next year. If necessary I'll maybe try to groundlayer it rather than to prune it so severely next time. That's probably safer with all the snails around. Having a more decent root system from the start would be very helpful too though...

Thanks Lukas, try putting your tree on top of a tray of water, the snails will be unable to cross the water to the tree!

It really amazes me Nigel. How much roots you take off a plant and the plant comes back so healthy. I would be so scared of taking that amount of root off but there again I am only a beginner I have become a little more adventurous when it comes to root pruning and it does seem to work. I too have lilacs growing in my garden. I find that they send runners out which I cut off and pot up I have never thought of producing a bonsai from one as the English versions have quite large leaves. Perhaps if I put one in a small pot it may stunt the leaf growth. What do you think? Nigel

For trees, do you usually wait till soil is dry to water. I have a dwarf scheflerra
Yes, I wait for the soil to just begin to dry out, always making sure it still has moisture in it!
I have a question: If the energy is stored in the roots for first flush of spring and you hard prune the roots, where does the tree get it’s energy from? No leaves, yet to convert sunlight to sugar for energy.
Hello Derrick, the energy is stored in the trunk, the branches and the roots, but mostly in the roots . When the sap flows in spring, this energy is equally distributed to all parts of the tree. When you prune off the roots in spring, you are only losing a portion of the trees energy, not most of it. The tree will then leaf out and new energy from the leaves will help grow a new root system, getting the tree in balance once again.
What’s a the status of the community gardens?
They are making progress, but very slowly. I help out, but don't get involved much anymore. The project was going too slow with little enthusiasm from the people in charge. I had to step away in frustration.

I water my trees in the morning, then I have lunch. I then spend the afternoon making videos and the evening editing, by the time I publish videos it's late at night. I generally get about 50 comments per video and it's impossible to answer them all, I would have to not sleep and work through the night. I do read every comment and try and answer as many as I can. Many UA-camrs get burned out trying to keep up with all their social media and comments, I'm trying to keep my time at the computer balanced with my life. I do also have a wife and 2 children at home that I also spend time with!
