    Big cut on the root tangled system. Repotting into the bigger pot and spring, hopefully arrives real soon by you, will bring out some nice growth.

    I think you'll enjoy this Bald Cypress, mine had a similar situation to yours (the roots were worse, they were literally tied in a knot) and I cut all the roots off and today, it's developed a very nice radial root system. I think this tree can look very nice in the future, you just gotta control the growth as some of the side branches I find tend to grow upwards if they are too vigorous.

    Quite the challenge with those tangled roots. However, "Dr Saunders", the world's leading root surgeon, knows how to fix it 😆✂🌴

    I like it when you remind us all about getting the basics right first on a young plant. Those roots will always end up defining what you can do with the tree in the future. thanks Nigel :)

    "And here (the roots) is what I'm left with." Hahaha
    You're a strong man.
    After all these years, I still can't bring myself to cut that much off.

    I usually have roots that look like these… but never that bad!
    I guess you’ll call this tree “3” because of the shape of the cut!

    I just got a mugo pine with roots just like this. It was obviously kept in a 4 inch pot for way too long. I cut about 50% off--it'll probably die, which sucks because it's a cool tree.

    realy nice the hard Root pruning was a good choice because the tree belongs to a cypress Familiy that can grow roots realy fast, like if you just took a cutting of a cypress it will grow roots in a few days so i think its the same thing with a Bald or swamp cypress great job👍👍👍

    you may have already gotten this comment but you'll probably want to keep that cypress in a tray with standing water. they DO NOT like drying out. i have several happily growing in buckets of fine pine bark mulch and leaf mold with no drainage at all that i keep filled with water throughout the growing season. I let the water level drop a couple inches below the soil surface before refilling to get at least a little oxygen to the roots

    while it’s still snowy at your side, I have already blooming peach trees in the garden. Unfortunately it dropped to below Zero this night. Hope the flowers survived. Thought about putting the trees from the greenhouse to the benches but now happy I left them in

    Good luck Nigel, hope the tree survives we shall find out in a few years. Thanks for the video, maybe an idea would be to have put some sphagnum moss in the bottom.

    Hello Nigel, great video as always. I have to find a Bald Cypress for myself, I quite enjoy these trees. I was wondering if you could remember me the brand of your watering can. I bought one but the waterflow is way too heavy for my trees. Thank you !

      The watering can might be Haws. Ordered a small copper one yesterday, ~ 1 Liter, as a gift for a friend.

      the ppl that i talk to about starting with bonsai some years back told me get trees that are harty and if you over cut the roots or tops won't die so the recoment me olive trees, now i know some can't have them coz the are not that good at the cold but were i live the survive.

  • @54114142
    @54114142 Рік тому +2

    That's a very drastic root cut. You could have tried an "air" layering in the soil by taking the cambium layer away just above this bulb. Less aggressive and should trigger a nice radial root system.

    • @averyprice9422
      @averyprice9422 Рік тому

      That's what I am trying with mine...

    • @its_notta_cedar
      @its_notta_cedar Рік тому

      It won't produce a radial root system every time reliably, it just has a chance to. It really is "should trigger" but it doesn't have to. A single root can be produced then take up all of the sugars and produce one big root. This happens often and Tony's bonsai did a video a week ago showing this happening, check it out. Air layering or ground layering would be the last resort for a tree like this imo. As for the root reduction. Nigel cutting roots is when he defines cajones but his trees seem to be extremely healthy.

    Hi Nigel, will you put e.g. two or three small pieces of wood between the pot and the tray so that water can better get "underneath" the pot?

    Hi Nigel, Do you use the same soil mixture for all your species of trees? I saw your video on how you make it, just wondering if you tweak it for tropicals and such. Thanks!

    wow dem roots are soo ugly that it became somewhat cool, I would love to see them exposed and make it the main feature, but I guess it's gone now.
