My grandfather flew 86 Missions in WWII with one of these, receiving the French Croix De Guerre.

My grand father got the croix de guerre too but in the resistance ( he got the médaille de la résistance too), did your gradnfather flew for free french air force? Was he french? Do you know where he flew (england, italy etc...)?
This was amazing!! I’m currently working on a 1/32 P-47 (eight nifties) it was Capt. Clyde Knisley’s plane. He was shot down over Luxembourg. It’s a build to pretty much honor him as I do all my models.

If I had one of these, it would be cruising to Chicago or someplace besides doing circles around the river. Great cockpit viewing though. A very nice aircraft. You're very lucky to have such.

A wonderful aircraft, easy to fly, maneuverable at altitude, fast, powerful, dives like a falling safe, and its toughness is legendary. Someone hit telephone pole - the telephone pole lost. A Brazilian hit a chimney. He lost the right outboard wing 18 inches outboard from the right main gear. He got it home. They would come home with 150 -200 - 300, and more bulletholes. An amazingly strong aircraft.
May I humbly suggest a camera with better contrast capabilities and an audio of t he pilots preflight checks and starting procedures. "Parking brake Set, Altimeter 29.83 Set, Boost Off, Mix Full Rich, Prop Full Increase, Oil temp 190C, Cylinder Head temp 230C Tail wheel Unlock, Parking Brake Off. You get the idea. Call out the action or guage and point to the gauge or control.
Again, you get the idea. It would add so much more to the educational aspects of the video. Even throw in bits of specific info on the aircraft Characteristics "Do NOT maneuver below 135 MPH at low altitude - you'll stall the airplane and not have altitude to recover. You'll be dead, you just won't have stopped breathing yet..."
Thank you for the video it's great the way it is. My thoughts are only to add it its interest and it mat take too much effort, especially with the cockpit workload already there!

Great video from one of my favourite aircraft! I noticed you never went much above 40 on the mainfold pressure gauge. Is this because you can't go full power on modern fuels (lack of proper octane), or to spare the engine, or both?

Excellent flying and a joy to watch. Best and worst traits of the P47?
Without having flown one I would say the worst trait was its high wing loading. As the first ones were deployed to England some P-47s and their pilots were lost due to high-speed-stalls when mock-dogfighting Spitfires until these were forbidden by the authorities. They just weren't made for this type of combat. Sure one could argue that instead it could outdive any of the German fighters which were on its tail, but you don't win combats by essentialy running away from them .Other tactics had to be developed by pilots like Huub Zemke who disliked the P-47 at first, like boom- and zoom tactics, diving down on the enemy and climbing up again, thus purely vertical manoeuvres instead of horizontal ones.
What I don't know is whether the wing loading of the P-47N was any better, which hab an entirely new wing :de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_P-47
@@pascalchauvet822 Well Stated sir. My Spitfire instructor always advised not to exceed 350 knot downward speed as the wings are attached with only 7 bolts. Good advice! 🇬🇧

The original turbo is not hooked up on this one. But Hun Hunter does run the turbo. At these low altitudes, the turbo does very little, but it is cool to have. Thanks for watching... -JS

Amazing! Is that bird yours? It must feel amazing! I fly mine in dcs lol! I notice I didnt see the turbo lever next to the throttle, that you could connect or not to, was it removed because collection warbirds don't need superchargers?

Although mostly used for ground-attack duties I suppose it really is in its element at 25.000 ft.
You were barely exceeding 150mph IAS in level flight, barely exceeding 250 in a dive and couldn't maintain the zoom climb for long. You weren't anywhere near full throttle, were you? Or am I just overestimating the capabilities of the P-47 at this altitude?

The Jug had more kills in WW2 than any other allied fighter. It's an extremely capable plane, but it had its quirks like any other. Good thing it had some serious armor plating protecting the pilot. Many a Jug landed safely when another plane would have been shredded. Truly a flying tank.
I could be wrong here, but I also think that most (probably all) the restored P-47s still in the air have the turbo supercharger system removed and are flying on normally aspirated R2800s. This would degrade performance somewhat, particularly at altitude.

It looks like the artificial horizon indicator is not functioning or locked?
I happen to notice that while the redline for the manifold pressure was between 50 and 55 inches, you only ran about 40 inches during takeoff. May I ask why that is?

Im sure they are a pain to work on, inefficient (compared to today's engines) and require alot more attention to operate, but man to Radial engines sound nice.

I was wondering at the very beginning if you were going to turn your fuel switch valve on...I saw you flipping the starter...I assume it was already primed, and temps, etc in the green...when it didn't turn over I saw that big red switch pointing in the wrong direction...Notice flipped it to "both tanks-all the way right and the beauty fired up on cue...kinda rough with the mixture though or is that SOP??? Not being a SA I'm truly curious...Amazing what happens when fuel gets to that massive engine :-) ...the "Jug" is my favorite WarBird by a long shot...well, the P-51D...Curious if there are any original P-47N around???? GREAT VIDEO EVEN IF IS 7 YEARS OLD...DEFINITELY, A DREAM OF MINE that will never achieve...time running out rather quickly for me ...guess it is for everyone though...
The big red switch is actually the magneto ignition switch. We first crank the engine through several blades with the mags off to ensure the engine rotates freely, then the mags are switched on and cranking with fuel begins. Yes, they start lumpy, not all cylinders fire together so it takes a few rotations before all cylinders are running clean and even. - JS

How difficult is it to fly a P-47 vs a Mustang or Corsair? The P-47, at least in this video, seems to be actually enjoyable rather than a ton of work. The plane wants to fly.
All the warbirds you mention are about the same in 'ease' to fly. The Thunderbolt is a bit heavier than the others and gets going a bit slower, but in the air it is beautifully balanced on the controls and you are correct - it loves to fly. Thanks for checking in. - JS

Which model is that?
Judging by what little I can see of the canopy it's either a late model D or a G, contrary to what a lot of people think not all D models were "Razorbacks", they had transitioned to the bubble canopy towards the end of the D model before the G began.

John Shoffner Good point. I'm just one of those guys that really like to keep antiques as original as possible, and for me at least, it's a bit heartbreaking to see equipment from to-day on aircraft from the '40s. Still, great plane though. If it flies, it's great! ;D
