It could not have the original engines, they were very tricky, unreliable and did not have the technology (tolerances) and the special alloys (Germany was blockaded) required. Ciao, L
That bad boy lands at any airport...you know you have the coolest aircraft on the tarmac. The Me-262 is a work of art. Fine job, to all of you at Paine AirField! I want one...I would have it painted in the livery of Heinz "Pritzl" Baer of JV-44...Red 13! Top German NCO ace in the Battle of Britain, he fought in all theaters. The Top Jet Ace of WWII (16 Jet Kills, 220 kills total) and his jet record stood till 1973! A gentleman warrior who hated the Nazi's and Goering especially. He was called a Saxon Bigmouth, cause he argued with Goering often. The quintessential Jagdflieger (Flying hunter) who looked like a movie star. Get this, for a time, he was a test pilot at Messerschmitt... they had a modified Me-262 with a Walther Rocket motor in it. (The same Rocket that powered the Me-163 "Komet") The planes name was Heimatschutzer II (Defender of the Realm) He actually took this plane to 52,000 ft! During the war...maybe '44 or '45? Incredible how far advanced the Germans were.
steven the rc king the 262 was designed for short runways it had to land really slow so the allies would follow them home and shoot them down while landing
They had an Achilles Heel. The Jumo engines would flame out on erratic throttle changes..it wasn't so much that they were landing slow. The same thing applied on take offs...everything with the throttles had to be done smoothly and not quickly. If they pushed them forward fast, the engines would flame out and many pilots crashed and were killed because of that. Our pilots would follow them to their bases and wait till they were landing, that is the only way our guys could catch them. Interestingly, many of the 262 airfields had FW-190 D9's for air cover when the 262's were in a landing or take off pattern. The prop planes would patrol the airfields and be ready for any Allied fighters that showed up to harass the 262's.
A 1980's cock rock guitar solo with Christmas music played on a Xylophone in the background. I should download it, change the music, then re-upload it.
Thank You for the video. I've seen the real ones up close and still get goose bumps thinking about it. In my humble opinion one of the most beautiful aircraft to ever fly.
"I don't know why people always feel the need to add music to aircraft videos". Well because a lot of people are idiots, if you remember the idiots that made the video of the School shooting in Colorado years ago did the same thing, (they added music) dumbasses !!.
I can not believe that this aircraft has been designed almost 70 years ago, For me it is one of the most beautiful aircraft in history, alongside the powerful F86 Sabre and the Mig 15..
Collings Foundation has a flying 2-seater replica in their inventory which does some flying on the summer airshow circuit. I got to listen to the tower audio of the 262 coming into an American airport: the plane announces its intent to land, stating it's a Messerschmitt Me-262, and you hear the tower reply "NXXXXX, you're a WHAT?!?!". Absolutely priceless!
I'm late but hey, fuck it ! Actually, as much as it is ahead of its time, there were many issues with the Me-262, it was great for taking down big targets such as bombers due to the 4 30mm cannons it held, but it was doing poorly against mustangs and spits as it was harder to turn. Not mentionning the fuel consumption. Add to that the fact that it was not mass produced, so generally outnumbered by allies, and often destroyed when landing or even bombed before going out of the factory.
your a moron! the ME-109 was junk compared to the mustang The FW-190 was good & could hang with the mustang but Germany was out of good pilots by the end of the war when the two met in the skys
Germany still had many aces that fought with the ME-262. Galland formed a squadron of aces called JV-44 that fought also during the battle of Berlin and they inflicted many casualties to the enemy besides of the air superiority. The ME-262 was meant to be a fighter not a Fight-bomber as Hitler wanted. Finally after all Galland's requests to do it so they finally became FIghters again. The Luftwaffe's role during the battle of Berlin is barely documented you can only read about it. Galland wrote a book called "The First and the last" were he tells all his air combat experiences along with other aces like Rudel or Molders until the last moments of Germany.
+Vellu Masa Agreed, I have got to the stage now where music in an aircraft video has me muting the sound. Would rather have silence than sound pollution
+Vellu Masa I agree.. but maybe it doesn't really matter about engine sounds since these replica 262's do not have the original Jumo engines which had a very short life. Maybe just mute the sound and enjoy the flight.. I think it's really cool that people wanted to build these replicas.
I agree. I'd like to hear the plane. If he insisted on music, he should have had something like Die Walküre, but low in the background. This music sounds like a 1980's cock rock solo with Christmas music played on a Xylophone in the background.

The Germans had some amazing hardware. The Allies defeated the Luftwaffe through attrition. Your odds of surviving all 50 missions in a B-17 were near zero. But we had a lot more guys, a lot more money, and a willingness to do whatever it took. And the Russians could throw MILLIONS of guys into a battle and accept that half of them would die. Germany had no answer for that. They simply bit off more than they could chew. But their ships, subs and aircraft were wold class. Even the 1930s era ME-109 made it all the way to the 1960s in some air forces. They just plain know how to build stuff. How many people know that the twin-engine, plywood-constructed Mosquito, a British design, could carry a heavier bomb load than a B-17? And required no defensive armament at all, because (except for the German jet) nobody had an airplane fast enough to catch it. It was the SR-71 of its day......PLUS it could carry a 4000 pound Blockbuster. Not that America had shitty planes, by any stretch of the imagination, but we certainly weren't the only ones who knew what we were doing.
@pete2778 In fact, the maximum of the programme were 35 bombing missions. The average casualty rate was about 75% for the total 35 missions (every 100 hundred, 25 could reach that target). Flak was their worst enemy.
Top 100 German aces shot down over 15,000 Allied aircraft. Heinz Bar shot down 21 B17's, 11 P51's, 10 P47's, 3 P38's, 2 B25's, Point is the top scoring American ace against the Germans shot down 28 while 26 German fighter pilots against the USAAF shot down more than 28. Georg-Peter Eder shot 56 US Aircraft and Kurt Buhligen shot down 51.
12thpanzer YET.....with all that superiority the Germans lost the war to a bunch of crap pilots flying crap planes with crap armament...!!! IF that was the case why did Germany lose ???? The Germans were beaten by equal or better planes flown by equal or better pilots with better tactics in vastly GREATER numbers...they were overwhelmed ! ! !
12thpanzer You can WHAT IF it to death but it will not change the outcome...Remember the war ended 70 years ago and Germany lost....plain and simple ! ! ! Part of the Allied tactics was to overwhelm the Axis, build and put into combat MORE planes of all types and with the Pilot rotation system use experienced combat pilots to train the new pilots on TACTICS....and you can ask yourself the question "How did Germanys tactics work out for them??? The obvious answer is "IT DID NOT! ! ! " They ran out of pilots, they lost the war... How did the Allies tactics work out for them??? VERY GOOD !!! there were no shortage of good pilots and no shortage of planes..... So you can "WHAT IF it to death" and it will not change the outcome of WW II Hitler and Germany were defeated and defeated bad ! ! ! ALL those "historians must have Been German as I have NEVER heard that before...The Allied pilots and planes were an equal match for the Germans or the Allies would never have decimated the German planes and pilots and caused the mis match in numbers end of story....The ALLIES kicked the shit out of Germany......
The Hakenkreutz/Swastika argument aside (and I understand both sides of it) There's another element that's always struck me regarding the Me262: That it is very shark-like, somehow, in profile. No other jet since has ever looked like it; not the same deadly grace at all.
***** The Messerschmitt P.1101 wings were fitted to the F-86 along with the leading adge slats from the Me-262.... Bell copied the entire P.1101 airframe not just the wings to build the X-5
***** You would have to be completely blind to require additional proof... the F-86 wing is clearly an identical copy of the the Messerschmitt P.1101 wing.. at least Bell aircraft was honest about their own use of German aircraft technology after the war... but of course they went a step further and copied the entire plane.....
e james The Messerschmitt Me P.1101 was also designed to use a single large diameter axialflow turbojet, the Heinkel HeS-011 which was similar in size to the GE J47
e james Woa, Whoa wait a minute... The MiG 15 was designed by Dr. Siegfried Günter, the man that designed the World's first jet aircraft the He-178... the MiG-15 is partially based on a Heinkel design that was not finished before the war ended... Youre thinking of another Soviet aircraft designed by Tank.... I do not remember which plane it was from memory
e james Yes, they look remarkably similar and it has often been suggested that the MiG-15 (and many other planes) were based on the Ta-183, but there is simply no evidence to support the claims nor any direct connection... although it is very probable that Dr. Siegfried Günter saw the plans for the Ta-183 and also conceivable that Seigfried used some data... we will never know.... there are no documents and both men are no longer alive. Dr. Siegfried Günter designed both the MiG-15 and the MiG-19 later went on to design the Worlds first supersonic V/STOL jet.
Absolutely. However much WW2 accelerated technology, I think the allies understood that victory would come through numbers, reliabilty, and ease of field maintenance. Germany may have had some amazing weapons but once they were broken or knocked out there were all kinds of problems with repair or replacement. At least, that's how I understand it, I'm happy to be corrected. And I agree, Meteors and the DHs, beautiful aircraft. Not that I really know anything about it.
This reminds me to the words of the instructors when I was seventeen. “Take a seat in the airplane, we start the engine, climb 1000 meters (observe metric) and try your first looping“ !
Think that is bad...all construction kits in Europe are forbidden to have swastikas in the decals. You must buy the decal sheets separate. To my mind,,,,no swastika, then the model is inaccurate.
SuperAncientmariner In the 80s we heard about that in America. There was a popular cut-out book, Build Your Own Hindenburg, which had heavy-paper cutouts and complete and authentic markings. You taped or glued it together and then had a 1:140 scale model of that airship. But apparently this book could not be sold in Die Alte Laende because of the Hakenkreuze on the tailfins! Unglaueblich!
Margot Darby I presume you are of German origin. I understand that the Hakenkeutze is not the most loved symbol in the world (although in actuality, one of the oldest), but is is a fact of history and the banning of it from period aircraft , (be it reproduction as here or on the genuine article,) or representations in model form ( Aircraft, ships, military), is wrong. To illustrate history, ALL symbols must be used. In Germany, one can understand a degree of reluctance .but the whole of Europe?
SuperAncientmariner Here in Germany it is actually banned by law except for prevention of the symbol and its associated ideologies, art or science, educational purposes and historical research alongside similar cases. It is also only forbidden to use the swastika and "confusingly similar" symbols in public, to store or spread and to produce and im-/export them. You are still allowed to keep old medals of your grandparents or their ID's from back then.
BoarhideGaming For Buddhists and Hindus, the swastika is a very religious symbol that is commonly used. how are they affected by this law.. and why did Germany try to get a Europe wide ban on it > I can understand a reluctance in Germany, but not for the whole of Europe
The replica Me-262s are using modern GE turbines that are lighter and produce about 40% more power. To keep the weight and balance correct, the engines are enclosed in replica housings. With the extra power, the new Me-262 have greater performance (take off performance, reserve power) and in theory could fly faster. But the new replicas are not any stronger, so the power settings are used to mimic the performance of the original engines and not stress the aircraft. There is an original Me-262 in restoration to fly with upgraded original turbines, so if they get that one in the air there should be some interesting comparisons in the future.
At that time the plane was 63 years old, designed and built in very difficult circumstances. What an effort really....!! It turns out to be a replica. Nice work for not mentioning that.
An engineering marvel! Immediately recognizable as a combat jet fighter because it's the prototype. Its impact on humanity demands that at least one operational version be preserved.
+Mick M One of five new-build replicas. There is one WW2 original that is testing for short flights soon after 20 years of work: ua-cam.com/video/QNZQw_HTONQ/v-deo.html
In the words of Captain Eric Brown,Scottish test pilot (who also flew+survived the Me 163), still alive at the age of 94, said the Me262 was far and away the most potent aircraft of WW2
Wow! Thank you for sharing this video! I never made one of these as an aircraft model builder and now I want to fly the real thing! Awesome work restoring the plane to flying condition!
Thank you for the wonderful video I used to spend a lot of time on building models and the 262 was a favorite. It is also a shame that people use comments for personal feelings while losing the beauty of this great aircraft bring back in the air. it is sad to see such angst. Cheers.
Points of trivia. Originally, this plane was a tail-dragger with recip engines & propellers. It was still a tail-dragger when they finally hung jet engines on it. That didn't work well, so they went to tricycle configured gear. They also put rather large diameter wheels on it, because they had mostly "grass" airfields. The sweep back of the wings & tail were not necessarily on account of later aerodynamic discoveries which you see on the next generation of jet aircraft.
It is always enthralling to watch this aircraft in flight. I think if they make this aircraft I am sure many flying enthusiasts would love to own it. This aircraft wss a trailblazer.
The Me 262 didn't become unstable (snake etc), it however above (from memory) mach 0.84 would develop a nose down attitude, which elevator inputs didn't correct. However later variants were planned to have an adjuster in the horizontal stabilizer manipulated by the pilot, as well as a higher swept back angle of the wings. I read that an adjustable horizontal stabilizer was also needed for the X1 to correct the exact same issue. The Meteor however did become unstable at the higher speeds.
What a masterpiece of German engineering! Beautiful!
It was a Thoroughbred.
Truly a work of art. When form and function combine to create something unique and beautiful... (but deadly.)
👍🏼
Historically accurate. All Me-262 pilots played this song on their radio during missions.
🐂💩
lol lol
That's funny as ! 👍🏼
They should consider adding a swastika on the tail for full historical immersion
What about the missing markings on the upper rudder?
Or, are we not to mention that symbol these days?

I agree :the music is cool for about 15 seconds then it becomes a complete pain in the arse. Great engine sound, should have heard that more.
Please change the backup music, put no music or something classic. This masterpiece of engineering deserve it.
I vote Nothing at all... Or perhaps some Classic '70's' Porno Music! Maybe "Lets Get It On"?.... Great Video, Love the Me 262 design.
@FENRIS
It doesn't have the original aircraft wrapped around those engines either! All flying 262s are replicas.

Those are the original painting and inscriptions. I think it is correct and loyal to historic facts. It has nothing to do with politics.
No Swastika at all, just the stylized cross which is the symbol of the german forces

That's a great idea. Old Jumos with modern digitally accurate fan blade made with todays alloys. Could be a good thing.
Great Plane!
Ładnie wylądował a to jest najwazniejsze dla pilota -Gratulacje !
Wilbur Finnigan The Germans had the highest kills per unit time as well.
Wilbur Finnigan If the numbers had been even, the allies would have had a zero percent chance of winning WWII. ALL historian agree to that.
Wilbur Finnigan If you get into a fight with 6 men and you whip 4 of them, who's the better man?
Great video! Could be from an ad for a modern Jet Fighter ...
I just turned the sounds down... issue solved! Great vid
Yeah but I wanted to hear the engine, I was torn.
The sound of the engine is a big part of it, especially at start and take off
Great job for constructors of this plane. The modern aircraft owe much to German thanks to this project.
Music ruined this . Oh well .
Outstanding. What an elegant bird. Love to see it with Junkers Jumo 004 and the R4m 20mm quartets in the snout!
The guns were actually 30 mm
@@andrejansen8863 And R4M was an unguided air to air or air to ground rocket.
A note for Mr Jensen. America did not ever invent the jetplane. They bought an engine from the inventors. In England.
Too bad that Britain just fell way, way, way behind America in everything scientific, economic, and probably everything else except Sharia law...lolol
RR Sandler kidding? i presume youre murican so no i guess youre not.
Of course we didn't invent the jet turbine or make the first jet plane. We just perfected it. XD
***** lololol....America makes and has almost always made the worlds best airplanes of all kinds.
RR Sandler So why the fuss over an old German one then?
Along with the FW 190 one of the most menacing looking fighter planes ever made.
How can you not love this airplane? German engineering at its finest, they have proven themselves, time and time again....
where can I get one of those t-shirts ?
great video and thank you for keeping her alive ...greetings from Bavaria
Great footage, and ruined by the music....please remove, many thanks
Un messercmmitt sin swastica no es un messercmitt
This reminds me to the words of the instructors when I was seventeen.
“Take a seat in the airplane, we start the engine, climb 1000 meters (observe metric) and try your first looping“ !
Nice repro. Flies well. Enjoyable vid. but the plane is, imho, incomplete without the one thing that marks a WW2 German aircraft.
Ausgezeichmet! Das ist die schoensten flug aus Allen welt, aber der musik ist unglaublich
Great renovation. But lose the 70's porn music.
The ME262 Project is located at Paine Field in Everett, WA, and the flight footage is over the Puget Sound and around Mt. Rainier.
lrga vida al la luftwaffe
An interview with the pilot as to how the plane handled would have been great, thanks for sharing and yes change the music
Though Germany lost the war but in futuristic technology she won and hope they keep on winning. Too great nation .
VIVA LA LUTWAFFE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beatifull machine and really great job.
Change the porn music!
Imagine the feeling the Americans in their p51 felt when that thing went by them. Bet it wasn’t a good feeling. Wow
la musique c est de la merde ;;;;domage ;;pas besoin de mettre une bande son ;;;;;c est l avion qu on veut entendre
At that time the plane was 63 years old, designed and built in very difficult circumstances. What an effort really....!!
It turns out to be a replica. Nice work for not mentioning that.
ruined by the crap music
God, what a gorgeous aircraft.
An engineering marvel! Immediately recognizable as a combat jet fighter because it's the prototype. Its impact on humanity demands that at least one operational version be preserved.
I had no idea there were still working examples - thanks for the post. Beautiful aircraft.
A magnificent plane and my favourite jet of all time
Cheers.
A truly beautiful bird ...
Proud of German Technology
What a plane, truly awesome.
Jeez, it's a twitchy little thing, isn't it! The hold-off on landing looked like fun.
Coolest looking Badass plane ever made next to Blackbird!
Well twenty two years is enough to keep this experience in my soul.
That is just THE coolest thing to see!
Superb! And what a landing - top of your game!!!
Looks for me always like a shark. Still one of the most beautiful fighter planes
I was at Payne field 5 or 10 years ago, is was super cool to see this being worked on.
