That one line when John looks at the stars
“Cassie, the lady in the rocking chair”
Is a reference to the Constellation “Cassiopeia” that’s mythology is of a lady in chair.
It’s significant because that means John has knowledge of constellations.
Ship navigator would use the constellations at night to navigate what direction they’re going.
John knowing the constellations could be a hint to how old he is, possibly a slave from an early slave vessel, perhaps even the navigator of a ship.. so by the 1930s he could’ve been hundreds of years old...

Wrong its a representation of christs crucifixion how christ performed miracles and took the sins upon himself..and paul represented the centurion that overseen the crucifixion and ordered the piercing of Christ's side..his was punished for letting christ die on the cross the roman sufferd the same punishment paul went through. @@theoneandonlyoni
That’s just one aspect of the story, you’re only seeing through a Christian lens, which I’m positive Stephen King did not mean for anyone to do, due to the fact that John says he doesn’t want a priest to give a preacher at his death, but would rather have Paul say a prayer; which is a clue that John practices Gnosticism.
John and his powers transcend mere Christianity, just like a lot of King’s Characters.
Cassiopeia herself is a Greek Myth from centuries before the Romans switched from polytheism to monotheism.
So while I do agree that your interpretation is correct to a point, I think you have to analyze John Coffey against all of Stephen King’s other characters, determine where Coffey stands in the universe of the Dark Tower, and interpret using all is the clues we, the audience, are given to make a conclusion on John Coffey’s Origins..
Rats and mice normally live only about 2-3 years. Up until the year depicted in the movie (1999) Mr. Jingles had lived about 64 years. That means that Mr. Jingles had lived about 21 times his normal lifespan. Since most humans can live 80 years or more, it is conceivable that Paul Edgecomb could live to to the age of 1,680 years (Assuming that he also lived 21 times past a normal human's lifespan).
Del (Delecroix) is from the french of Lousiana. Thanks for this. I have watched it several dozen times, many of those being with reactors. Stephen king is not only a master at story-telling, but has got to be the best at writing nefarious characters, such as Percy.

Stephen King has said that John Coffey’s initials were J.C. for a reason…
At one point in the movie a character says of Coffey that there are no records of him anywhere, “It’s like he just dropped down out of the sky.”
Neither are John Connor's initials from The Terminator. There are other examples of JC being used for salvational figures in literature and movies.

The accent is Louisiana Creole. They speak English, French and some Portuguese all mixed up together. Unless you live around them most of your life you will have a real hard time understanding them. John Coffey was a gift from God, born with the gift of Extreme empathy. John was one of Gods true miracles. He took back what was wrong with people he encountered. The mouse was 64 years old and he was 108, so the old man probably has another 100 years to go.
I think that maybe John Coffey was sent directly from Above ('Like he just...dropped outta the sky....') to test Mankind, to see if they could rise above their prejudices and recognize him for the miracle that he was. I did a rough calculation, assuming the natural lifespan of a wild mouse at a maximum of three years. If John extended Paul's lifespan proportionately, he could live to be over 2000.
If you’re talking about the character Eduard Delacroix, he was a Cajun man…and what is supposed to be depicted is a Cajun accent and it’s supposed to be that he speaks Cajun French. That accent, culture, history, and language is completely different than Louisiana Creole French and Creole people. As with Louisiana Creole French, I wouldn’t call Portuguese a main contributor of the Louisiana Creole language either. Obviously it’s a complex history and the language is made up of various influences linguistically BUT Portuguese is not a major contributor in the Louisiana Creole language (from what I know of). You have that entirely wrong as someone who is from South Louisiana and is Creole.

One thing that I’ve always thought about with this movie … how old was John Coffey? Tom Hanks’ character at the end was 108 yrs old bc John Coffey infected him with life (he said he had to give him a little of himself to show that it was Wild Bill who killed the girls). And how much did he see? If you think of American history from 1700s to 1930 something. That’s a lot of anguish, pain and death especially since it was Louisiana which is the south (civil war, Spanish/American war, Native American displacement across the country). We don’t know where he originated from but if we assume he’s from the American south since it’s based in Louisiana than John Coffey dealt with a lot. Plus going back less than 100 yrs from the time of the movie he would have probably been a slave which tracks bc he mentions the woman in the rocking chair when looking at the stars. ⭐️. Which would be Cassiopeia which is near the North Star. Escaped slaves would look for Cassiopeia in the night sky to follow the North Star along the Underground Railroad to freedom. Even if John Coffey didn’t escape he would have heard of the constellation. Plus 1930s is right before WW2. He would have seen the horrors during reconstruction in the south after the civil war to people coming back from WW1. As an empath who would have lived so long, that had to be a hard time to live through with his abilities.
When he mentioned Cassiopeia in the sky I thought maybe this dude is hundreds of years old and knows constellations from sea navigation.
I think John was old enough to be a slave, hence his "lady in the rocking chair reference"... Maybe even older. John had seen his share of days at that point, which is why the lawyer had no idea when he was born, or where.

One of the BEST movies ever made. And like The Shawshank Redemption, King had his hands in that, also. Those 2 films just show that KING is not JUST Horror. But, he IS the MASTER of Horror. Oh, and Percy, in the film, the actor who Played him was amazing. People didn't dislike Percy. They hated him. That shows that the actor did his job WELL. Great Poist, guys. Miss Cassie, the one John referred to in the stars, is the constellation "Cassiopeia" (Also known as "The Lady of the Chair"). The constellation is named after Cassiopeia, the vain queen of Aethiopia in Greek mythology who boasted about her beauty.

Paul says he runs E Block (Death Row, Green Mile) like a hospital ward, but it's more like a monastery; the guards treat the prisoners with dignity, restoring their humanity to them.
Executions need a practice session so that there are no accidents. It's less for those attending the execution and more to minimize fear and pain for the one executed. Electrocution is supposed to be a quick and humane way to execute. Paul arranges ways to get the condemned individual out of the cellblock (final family visit for Arlen Bitterbuck; Eduard "Del" Delacroix, a Cajun, was taken out under the ruse of having Del's mouse perform for an important political figure), then he has the cellblock's trusty (a trusted prisoner from the regular population who gets small benefits for menial duties) to be the stand-in for the prisoner to next be executed.
There are several groups of people invited or allowed to attend executions.
-The Prison Staff: This is constituted of the Prison Warden (to oversee the event), the E Block guards (who carry out the execution), and the executioner (who throws the power switch that electrifies the chair).
-The Jury: In many states, the jury who voted for the penalty of death are required to attend, to ensure they are certain on agreeing to such a harsh and permanent penalty.
-The Victims' Family: Invited but not required to attend, the family of the victim is invited to attend to see with their own eyes that justice is done and to help them find peace.
-The Condemned's Family: May request attendance.
-The Media: Some crimes have local or national significance, so news media could request attendance to cover the execution, to report details to the public; not all requests are approved.

John Coffey's existence is wrapped in mystery but there are clues in the story that suggest he is far older than he looks.
While Coffey is so rooted in the immediate present that he has difficulty remembering things from one day to the next. Details elude him, including how he got the numerous scars on his back, but he remembers things like 'Cassie, the Lady in the Rockin' Chair'.
'Cassie' is a big clue. It's a reference to Cassiopeia, a constellation adjacent to Polaris (the North Star).
Cassiopeia was a queen in ancient Greece myth who angered the gods when she boasted about her daughter's great beauty being greater than that of the goddesses of Olympus. Cassiopeia was chained to her throne, then she and her throne placed in the heavens.
During slavery times, those escaping to the northern states traveled mainly at night with the North Star guiding the way. One way to identify the North Star in the sky was to look for Cassiopeia. The North Star is 'positioned' over the north pole, so the night sky revolves around the North Star over the course of a year. Cassiopeia being immediately-adjacent, it also rotates 360-degrees around the North Star. 'Cassiopeia' was shortened to 'Cassie' and her throne (because it circled around the North Star) was reimagined as a rocking chair.
For Coffey to know about Cassie, he must have been alive during slavery times, making him at least 70 years old. Being born before the start of the Civil War would explain the scars on his back; whippings received on the plantation. Also, either in the film or the serial novel, Coffey mentions a memory of running through a green African landscape; this means Coffey was not born in American but was brought here on a slave ship. So, he could be a LOT older.

Stephen King has allowed in interviews that John Coffey's initials being 'JC' is no coincidence.
Coffey has an amazing empathic ability, having no filter against what others are feeling. This is why he said "Careful" when they were bringing in Wild Billy; Coffey could sense Wild Billy's intentions to attack the guards. This is why Del's execution hit him so hard. And it's why he finally just wanted to go 'home', back to heaven.
Coffey's healing powers seems to be based on a belief that God the Father gave us perfect bodies. The problem is that demons corrupt the perfect vessel God has given us, manifesting as disease and death. So long as the body is not too long dead, Coffey can draw the demons out, which leaves the body in its intended pure and healthy state. After drawing them out, Coffey spits the demons out as 'flies', where they each quickly disappear in tiny puffs of smoke to return to Hell. The 'flies' seem to relate to the demon Beelzebub, Lord of the Flies. In this way, Coffey 'takes it back'. If death has occurred, healing has to be done while 'there's still time', before 'it was too late'.

It makes perfect sense if you think about it from Coffey's perspective. A person who can feel, hear and see any number of random people's lives no telling how far around the world. If you can't open your eyes and know where you are, where or who are you? I would imagine it would be like waking up not knowing if it was a dream or reality.
I was 11years old when I first watched this film . I was supposed to go to school the next day but it caught my attention. When johns death came about I cried my heart out. I cry the same way when it comes out again my 11 year old kid comes out . R.IP. Michael Clarke Duncan ❤❤

Typically, mice live 2-3 years in captivity. Mr Jingles was at least 64 at the end of the movie. It’s pretty clear Johns power kept you healthy and alive, but didn’t stop you from aging. Especially in the book it describes how ancient Mr Jingles seems. Going off that, if Paul has a similar lifespan to Mr Jingles (adjusted for being a human of course) it’s possible that Paul might have a couple millennia of life left in him, which is fucking horrifying.

"Shawshank Redemption", The Green Mile" and "The Mist" were all written by Stephen King and directed by Frank Darabont. Darabont is probably best known as the original creator of "The Walking Dead" television series.

In regards to dels death. I know its only a movie, and it has to have a certain kind of brutallity in it. However, all of those guards had sidearms on during the execution. All it would take is one bullet, and del would be dead without dying like that.
What if they miss? And it richochets? or the bullet goes through him and hits somebody else? And then what if someone higher up questions why the prisoner has bullet holes in them? Their would probably have to be an inquiry into the entire thing. Somebody would lose there job. And it wouldn't be Percy.
@GregorySnipe well, first off, I'm not going to claim I am an expert in ballistics. However, what if they miss and hit someone? Well no one is standing behind the chair, so If they shoot him from the front of him, that negates that danger. What if the bullet goes through him and ricochet?. All possible. However, the bullet would have to go through him, and the back of the chair before it hits the wall behind him, by the time the bullet would get to the wall to ricochet, it would have already lost 80% of its energy going through del, and the back of the chair. Again, I'm not claiming to be an expert on ballistics, but I'm decent with physics, and I'm not sure what caliber firearms they had, but cops back then normally carried. 38 special, not a very powerful caliber. I believe with 99% certainty, that the bullet wouldn't be powerful enough after the ricochet to bounce back and hit someone (which many people are quite away foward from del).
That's just my take on it. 😀

If you watch the "flies," "gnats," or "bugs" very closely, they disappear, much like cinders that fly up from a bonfire -- they turn to fluff and totally disappear. They do represent the negativity of illnesses as many here have opined.

Nice reaction... I've never watched you two before. There are so many reactors who are so... I don't know... young and imperceptive... I really don't care what they think about a movie. But you two are refreshing. I respect your opinions... it'll be fun seeing you experiencing some of my favorite movies. Try the movie, Empire of the Sun. Directed by Steven Spielberg, with a great performance by John Malkovich and a very young Christian Bale.

I think my favorite scene is when Paul asked John "what do you want me to do?". As a religious person, you would have some hard conversations in your head about "right vs wrong" and trying to decide if this was a test from God. Like he said... "On the day of my judgment, when I stand before God, and He asks me why did I kill one of his true miracles, what am I gonna say? That it was my job? My job?” That scene always gets me lol.

Thers a misconception about Stephen King that he's a horror author. While he has written horror, he doesn't limit his writing to just that. As someone who has read every one of his books, most of them at least twice or more, i can tell you he touches on every genre

If you like martial arts movie, there are some I can reccommend. The first is Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. It' set in medivial time in China about a famouse sword that was stolen. A funny movie is Kung Fu Hustle. It's about a man trying to make his way unemployed to survive on the streets. It's a comedy. Another comedy is Shaolin Soccer. It's about a group of monks who decided to join a soccer tournament to raise money to save their monastary. Use subtitles as the dubbed version is correct.

"The Lady in the Rocking Chair" is the constellation Cassiopeia. It's a group of stars that look like a woman sitting in a chair.
You are correct, John Coffey was an "Empath" (Among other things ..... Seer, healer, etc). Empath is derived from the word "Empathy" ..... Meaning that he had the ability to share and understand the feelings of others. When Del was electrocuted, John could feel every bit of what Del was going through.

“He was a force of nature. Some power made him a huge hulking creature that could only be and do good, for him existing as a human was painful and his death a relief. He isn't a protagonist, that's Edgecomb, he is a piece of the heavens, or of the beam, that came in to being possibly as a direct counter reaction to the Walking Dude's presence. Old Flagg never directly appears but his evil is spread everywhere during the great depression, showing up in sickness that downs the wardens wife and in Wild Bill. The character Eduard "Del" Delacroix was a Cajun from south Louisiana (the setting of the story). That was the reason for the accent (A French derivative). Being that I'm of Cajun ancestry, I can vouch that the actor (Michael Jeter) did the accent very well. Michael Jeter can also be seen as the character "Mr. Udesky" in the movie "Jurassic Park III."
Stephen King stories are perceived as horror or terror. I’ve never seen them that way. His stories are full of interesting and average folks.
Stories about people facing horrible circumstances. King chooses creatures and the supernatural to illustrate his points. But at their core, they are stories about people facing situations they could have never imagined and trying to find their way through them.

Stephen Kings has many stories with people that have the "Shine", which could be healing powers, telekinesis, ability to start fires (Firestarter movie) and ESP. Great reaction though.... watch "The Mist", it is the third movie that King and Frank Darabont put out along with this one and Shawshank.
I'm telling you guys, if you liked this movie, I urge you to read the book. It goes into more detail of everything, including more about the other inmates, along with other differences. It's a very good story - both the movie and the book. ❤

14:59 The rehearsal wasn't for the condemned person but for the guards. They had to make sure it was done Correctly everytime. The rehearsals were done with a trustee not the condemned man.

I never took it that John could feel the whole world. I took it that he has walked all over the world because he was hundreds of years old. He had been all over Africa and been a slave and roamed the countryside as a free man. He had seen and forgotten all.
BTW, at the time of this setting, antibiotics were only just barely discovered. You have to power through a UTI and pray. They would treat you with sulfa drugs, but they weren't very effective.

Even if they could prove that John didn't so it, that knowledge would cause immeasurable mental damage to that family. Knowing that they welcomed the killer into their home would completely destroy the parents.
