Watched my dad play it for many months back in the early 90s but we lost it before I started playing games. He was so bummed they never made one for the N64 lol I think it’s time to pay homage to the old man. Buying this just to finally have that moment

Golden sun with this kind of treatment would be wonderful
For the post-game boss rematches, timed defense is pretty much a requirement for Johnny and Punchinello and Culex.
Overall, I like how the post-game boss fights are highly tuned battle puzzles and offer a taste of what a proper sequel with a ShinMegamiTensei-esque difficulty could be like.
A hint for post-game Culex: Don't equip Lazy Shell Armor, optimize for Speed, stock up on all-party healing items, don't have Bowser in the fight (his magic def sux so hard)
I remember in the original using lazy shell on Peach and just absolutely tanking the whole thing. Culex actually ran out of his own MP eventually, and I frying pan slapped him into oblivion... eventually
@@syluxassassin That strategy is fine for the first time through the game when Culex is 2D and works just like the original SNES.
Post game 3D Culex requires a bit more strategy, as you need to ensure someone takes a turn after Culex does a bullshit move that does (max hp - 1) damage, otherwise if a Crystal takes a turn right after said move.... wipe.
Mario Wonder being like someone just invented color is the best description I've heard for it

I love Super Mario RPG and will buy this game. Used to play this game every year. I just love everything about it. The story, writing, secrets, gameplay, art design, and the music. Love the music sop much! Can't wait to replay this great game again.
Would absolutely love if they made a second game. The paper Mario games never hit the same for me for whatever reason.
I know, I feel the same way. Paper Mario just wasn't as good and felt like a cheap knockoff.

@jboogie915 to be honest I could see them doing it. As much flack unity gets, there is some really good looking games that in my opinion looks better than unreal 5. Star ocean 2 remake is a other game that runs on unity that looks breathtaking.

Nintendo has been on fire in 2023. The Nintendo Switch keeps churning out wonderful titles. Super Mario Wonder, Pikmin 4, Metroid Prime Remastered, The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, Bayonetta 3, Celeste, Super Mario RPG, etc. I'll have to give this one a shot at some point. Wonder is okay, Pikmin 4 is w/e, Prime rm is mid, Bayo 3 is bad, TotK looks more of the same, Celeste is just a port, SMRPG is yet another overpriced remake banking in on nostalgia.

@lwst82 Celeste came out in 2018, but I don't think that it had a Nintendo Switch physical release at the time. Eventually, Limited Run Games released it in physical format. Currently, you can buy the Fangamer version, which came out earlier this year.
I think Fire Emblem is still my favorite.. However they almost never disappoint with first party.. I got away from Nintendo for a while but they def won me back with their Switch line.. Prolly the only thing noticeably missing is Punch Out..
Nintendo is easily publisher of the year at this point. Their yearly output at this qaulity is insane.
Next year for Nintendo is going to be even crazier.

Counterbalanced by mediocrity like F-Zero 99 and AW Reboot Camp and several 60$ remakes. Add to that some asinine business decisions and canceling of fan games and the picture isn't that pretty any more but is more realistic.
I'm a huge Nintendo fan,
But recently I became a bigger Xbox fan.
Blah blah reviews, I know the reviews are not as high but they are not reflective of how good their games and gamepass are.
They have the better games IMO

First time I saw the original was at a friend's place who was already just before the Birthday Cake boss. It was really something to behold at the time as the graphics were a step above even other SNES games. Really enjoying this remake; I appreciate the quality of life changes such as tougher enemies that drop frog coins, a storage box so you never have to constantly manage inventory, the party composition specific super moves, and an icon to help teach you when to time the action commands. I like the original soundtrack over the modernized one though; it just sounds more refined to my ears. Good thing you have an option.
I love the game but I'm bummed out Mario doesn't do his peace sign after a win anymore.
This is one of my childhood favourites, there was no way that I wasn't going to get this on launch. I eagerly await the delivery person tomorrow :)

Hey ACG, I was wondering if you can review the game "Trinity Fusion." I have over 74 hours in this game and it is one of my favorite roguelites I have ever played. Yet on steam it only has 90 reviews. Suffice it to say, this is a gem in the rough, and criminally under-rated. The devs need someone like you to shine a spotlight on it. Note, I have no affiliation, just a gamer who really loves this game and wants to see it succeed. Thank you.

The best Mario game ever made, and that was the original.
I'm definitely looking forward to playing it. For added challenge you can do a Mallow only or other character only runs. With enemies not scaling up it's possible in the remake. They're fun and for first time players or players that haven't done a self imposed challenge they'll definitely scratch that difficulty itch.
How would you do a "character only" challenge if you can't have less than 3 characters? And isn't Mario always in the party?

Pretty easy, once you get the certain character you keep the other two party members at 0 HP and let the enemies attack them and don't defend to get them to 0 HP. They'll be incapacitated and you don't revive them. Usually certain scenes will bring them back to 1 HP and let enemies incapacitate them again and don't attack until they are incapacitated. It's also not 'Game over' if Mario is incapacitated, only if all party members are.

I wonder how the licensing worked with Geno. The original was a co-production with Squaresoft, limiting his appearances in future games.
Cloud/Sephiroth appeared in Smash Bros. That bridge was already crossed in a big way.

They’re also a triple move attack a new feature to super Mario RPG one of you perform a triple move or team attack it will show you a scene based on that attack you choose. It’s almost like a final smash attack that you seen super smash Brothers ultimate.

I played and beat this when i was in elementary school still 😂 im 33 now so im super stoked to relive this magical game. Its so great! Some of my fondest memories gaming!

I feel you man. I can tell when I’m playing a great game but I just can’t find a spark of joy from games anymore. It suck’s but I usually just play for a few hours and move on

Speaking of improved visual detail, I never noticed in the original that the thing on the desk on the ground floor of Booster's Tower is supposed to be Magitek Armor from Final Fantasy 6.
All of the jokes and personality are intact.
To new players, I can't emphasize enough that the disrespect for Mario that the kid in Rosetown (Gaz) has or Bowser's fragile ego were also in the original.
It's interesting that you mention difficulty when all the comments I've been reading on the game lament how easy it is. I think a lot of these are likely from fans that have played the game many many times already. Not saying I find it hard either, just that it's probably a little harder than a veteran of the game may realize.

This was one of my favorite games as a child. I'd love if they put a hard mode in. But this is just amazing to have remade up for Switch.
Alright, you’ve convinced me. I’m normally not a turn based player (outside of Pokémon), but this looks interesting.
In this game or even this remake, there’s no dialogue, but you can’t miss a beat everything that you see is portrayed you through the character’s sprites and animations
I was a Sega kid so these cool SNES games weren't anything I was involved with. It certainly looks fun though and seems to be something I would enjoy even without the nostalgia boost.
UK folks never played this, i played this on early PC emulators and didn't get along with it, there is nothing changed in this remake tbh, mild basic progress, i had a better time with chrono trigger original when i played it back then, more memorable!
Played the original several times but never got very far but I pre-ordered knowing this in one if the classics people talk about.
Can't say this was on my radar but might actually have to check it out, looks fun

Xbox for shooters and racers.
Playstation for story driven games.
Nintendo for innovation and children's games.
I find the frequency of high quality games produced by Nintendo to far outstrip the successes of Xbox and Sony.
Good to see they remade the game but I wanna really know besides look and sound what did they change? Anything new?

Definitely enjoying it. Only an hour in and got the first Star. Seems shorter based on that than I remember but I love all the old school charm to it all. 100% must buy.
The original was a short game. Despite the fast level ups, the game had a level cap of 30 and most play throughs I never reached it. It is all great gameplay, no filler to pad the runtime.
I was never a fan of Zelda or Mario…Until this year. This looks so beautiful and fun.

SUPER MARIO RPG was definitely worth it. I felt like I was in front of my cheap audio Video tv cables twenty years ago. The cutscenes are very clean for a handheld.What a remaster should be like. This is all SQUARE ENIX had to do for FF7. I think SQUARE ENIX will rethink the idea and come with two different versions after FF7 Remake, Rebirth and Reunion. The idea is not impossible.
The Super Nintendo game was a masterpiece! This game is what got my older brothers and older cousins into Final Fantasy series on the PlayStation and PlayStation 2.
This was my favorite game of all time back in the day and how I got into RPGs. This might be what makes me break down and pick up a Switch. Great review as always.
I'm partial towards PC, but there are a ton of great games on Switch.
I measure a console by the number of good games they have on offer. Yeah, worth the investment.
Also, laying back, and playing Switch, while it's raining, so comfy!
Never played to original so I’m super excited for this one plus I need something happy like this after Alan Wake 2. That game messed with my head and I found it very scary at times so this will be a nice pallet cleanser

I really hope and wish they do a version of Starfox zero for the switch...the core gameplay graphics and story were sound....just the Wii u pad focus really ruined it for me

I am not a fan of Animal Crossing or Pokemon at all - I just don't get the appeal of either franchise - but I love just about everything else that Nintendo have done, especially their Mario and Zelda games. I never got the chance to play Super Mario RPG on the SNES as my first Nintendo console was the N64 so I am really looking forward to playing this on my Switch OLED later on today.
All these remakes but Jet Set Radio Future is left to rot. sigh.

I played maybe an hour of it on my SNES classic but never went back to finish it. Glad I didn’t now so I can experience everything fresh in this remake

ain't blasphemous, the game is an old "cult" classic, from 25+ years ago. Also sold these days at an absurd price because rpg means overpriced retro market. Basically no one but the people who had an snes at the time has played it (unless you emulate)

The game that inspired SuperStar Saga getting a remake...would be good to play it and see the roots of the Mario RPG titles.
jump constantly in corners or places you suspect might have an invisible block. there are so many invisible blocks everywhere and a lot of them give frog coins which are very useful

Im so glad Nintendo are still in the industry, i gave my switch to my son as i just dont enjoy their games, but they add such a unique aspect to the landscape.

It released very late into its lifespan, when the N64 had just launched. So, it definitely slipped past a lot of radars at that time.
Next year had better only have a few good releases. Forget the cost, i need another year or two of free time to play all the games from this year.
Would be cool to get a port of DK64! Also still waiting on Twilight Princess HD on switch.

i disagree with this review? after playing this for 13 hours so far, it still has it aged old gameplay with a coat of modern day slap on remake but i find myself frustrated with the gameplay and progress of this game overall, this is my first time playing this, there are better modern day RPGS out there that would present a better experience overall imo

And after Zelda Tears of the Kingdom I thought yep it's done a great finale for the switch system but nope Mario Wonder Mario RPG it just keeps getting better. Gonna pick this up for me and my wife we plan on having a Mario RPG Pizza and cherry coke evening tomorrow.
I found Tears of the Kingdom to be a massive disappointment. Too much repetition and tedium for my liking. It's quite upsetting that it doesn't feel like a sequel to Breath of the Wild at all, but like a total remake with Breath of the Wild's lore being completely erased from history as if Divine Beasts and Sheikh technology never existed

5:57 Oh, right, that is one thing that kind of always annoyed me about the game. Why make up something new in the “Pick Me Up” to revive fallen allies when you could have used the more Mario-fitting 1-Up Mushroom instead?
