  • THE TURNPIKE NEEDS OUR HELP. THERE WAS A MEETING REGARDING POSSIBLE FUNDING TO HELP BRING BACK TO LIFE THE ABANDONED TURNPIKE TO USE AS A RECREATIONAL TRAIL BY MEANS OF REPAIRING AND MAINTAINING THIS STRETCH.
    ALL WE NEED TO DO TO HELP THIS ALONG IS WRITE A LITTLE BLURB ABOUT HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THE PIKE AND HOW YOU THINK IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO FIX IT UP AND COULD CREATE A TOURIST ATTRACTION.
    IF YOU CAN DO THIS AND EMAIL IT TO ME I WILL BE SURE IT GETS SENT TO THE RIGHT PERSON TO HELP MOTIVATE THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS TO SEE HOW IMPORTANT THIS NATIONAL TREASURE REALLY IS.
    PLEASE SEND ANY COMMENTS TO ME AT:
    kylemills200@gmail.com
    Thanks for helping us bring it back to life for future generations to enjoy!!!
    WATCH PART 2 HERE: • Abandoned Pennsylvania...
    My wife and I made the trek down to the abandoned section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. We had a chance to explore the tunnels again and I brought along my Phantom drone to get some great aerial shots so be sure to look for that video here:

    Thanks for a great video, it was great!! Back in 1964 my family and I traveled from Pittsburgh to DC and I remembered traveling through Laurel Hill Tunnel and Allegheny Mountain Tunnel. Laurel Hill Bypass had not opened yet nor was Allegheny twin. I was 9 years old and in awe of the tunnels. In 1968 we traveled to Gettysburg and traveled through Rays Hill and Sideling Hill Tunnels. That bypass was being built at the time. Having driven those two bypasses in the 70's and 80's in the winter on top of those mountains.......WELL, a stupid move by the PA Turnpike officials Some good advice, stay away from those bypasses in the winter. Again thanks for sharing a great video!!!

    I really hope this old highway is fixed up and all the trees and brush are cleared away. If any viewers want to see how the Turnpike looked brand new in 1940, Neal Schorr and I have a new book out called The Glory Years of the Pennsylvania Turnpike coming out 12/5 and will be available through websites like Barnes and Noble, Arcadia, Target. We even have interior views of the tunnels with the original lighting intact. Mitch Dakelman

    first I'd like to say thank you for the videos.... I fell upon the history of the tunnels, looked it all up for hours on the net and google maps... Was quite fascinated by the whole story behind these abandoned turnpikes tunnels. Looked at countless images. then fell on your first trip with 3 friends... And now these next vids of your second trip you did. I thinks its pretty cool that you've taken the time to film your trips... thank you for enlightening all of us who wondered about em... Good on you. Thanks.

      thanks, I really hope you get a chance to visit them yourself one day. There is nothing like being there in person, the first time you get to see those huge portals up close, the sight, the smells, it is really a cool adventure that I highly recommend if you ever get the chance someday

    Man would've been nice to see the turnpike in its hayday back in the 40s. I'd love to see it all fixed up for tourism purposes. After moving to PA from Germany, This abandonded turnpike is a favorite for me to visit for hiking trips every now and then.

    One thing I never see anyone explore, is the old interchange remnants and bridge just before the turnpike dumps out onto Route 30. Often wonder what might be under the bridge, which I think might be backfilled on the one side.
    If you were to leave the Quality Inn parking lot, and go straight across 30 into the adjacent lot, going all the way to the back of the lot should bring you on to a short stretch of abandoned turnpike. Go right, and you quickly come to the interchange.

    • @KyleMills1
      @KyleMills1  8 років тому +1

      +Element of Kindness that part is still owned by the turnpike commission but I do know the stretch you are talking about. When I go down next week I will take a look back there and if no one is around I will go check it out.

    Hi Kyle, I was curious about the signs/security cameras/welded entry doors.
    I noticed on the warning signs that were posted, it mentioned that the interior areas can be visited with a guided tour. Which areas are still accessible, and which areas are completely off-limits? Also, do you ever plan to camp along the turnpike someday? I apologize if these topics were answered previously. And by the way, whatever cameras you were using in this video are outstanding quality. What were you recording with? Thanks man, and take care.

    • @KyleMills1
      @KyleMills1  9 років тому

      Todd E Walnuts None of the interior rooms are "technically" accessible without going on the guided tour. Even though the doors have covers welded over them, they are still accessible from on top of the portal through various broken windows and doors. You are not supposed to enter those rooms and I am not encouraging anyone to do it but I had to when I visited. Someday I do plan on camping it, I was going to on this trip in 2014 but the forecast was not great so I chose the motel. In this video I shot on my GoPro Hero 3+ Black and my old JVC Everio HD camcorder. Glad you enjoyed.

    If you are driving that far to see this tunnel you also might want to stop at the Great Allegheny Passage in Somerset county just west of Bedford county. there is a mile long tunnel that is part of the bike path. the tunnel is right before the PA MD line. it is closed in the winter, there are huge doors that are shut. If you go there in the summer look out for rattler snakes if you go on top. the snakes are everywhere there. the tunnel is part of the old railroad. I think I heard once that it is the rail line where the dead body of President McKinnley was brought home on.

    As a kid (last week!), we used to have a contest as to who could hold their breath the longest thru the tunnel @ the 3:50-ish mark. The only peace & quiet my poor parents got on our road trips! BTW, when I was a Bell of Pa Lineman, my 1st climb was near the far end of this tunnel. When I got to the top, I saw a GORGEOUS, Nekkid Lady, poolside. I asked the rest of my crew if this was common. Many expletives were thrown my way as some w/30+ years never saw such a thing. They called me the luckiest SOB evah!

  • @dgardner7259

    • @RB01.10
      @RB01.10 6 років тому +2

      D Gardner It may look it, but it was a four lane highway. It became a two lane when you approached the tunnel(s). That's why it was abandoned. The engineers underestimated how much traffic would be on the road.

    • @JeffDeWitt

      the tunnels were creating too many backups, the speed on the turnpike used to be 70? I believe but it dropped down to 35mph at the tunnels. Rather than bore a new tunnel they bypassed them up over the mountains and drilled new holes at the other tunnels

Not sure but I had heard it drove the fans originally as well and the coal dust was an issue being blown in to the tunnels from those giant fans.

Ther is an educational coal mine near Pittsburgh called Tour -Ed that is a school field trip destination even today. Riding one-handed with a camera while towing a bike trailer and riding on the wrong side of the highway? Nice way to show us all how NOT to do it...

      +Element of Kindness If you are talking about what I think you are talking about I was there today. There is a big pull off area on the Breezewood exit (the exit is actually the old Turnpike), and a piece of road heading off from there. It's obviously closed but it wasn't blocked and there were no signs saying not to so I drove down it. I'm pretty sure it's the original Breezewood exit, it curves around, goes under an overpass and stops, it looks like they did as you suggested and back filled it. I'll post some pictures when I get them off my camera.
