- Join us as we take a ride from Breezewood PA. to the abandoned Turnpike through Rays Hill tunnel and Sideling tunnel the longest of all , bypassed in 1968 once part of Americas first super highway. Your mind cant help but wonder
i was there this past sunday
the south Pennsylvania railroad mentioned in this video. was a project started by Cornelius Vanderbilt. as a direct way to compete with the then successful Pennsylvania railroad. However the railroad was never opened and never picked up or operated by any railroad company
Originally, the Turnpike had seven single-lane tunnels. By the 1960s, severe traffic bottlenecks were common at each tunnel. To alleviate this, four of the tunnels (Allegheny, Blue, Kittatinny, and Tuscarora Mountain) were twinned, while the other three (Laurel, Ray's, and Sideling Hill) were bypassed. The two tunnels in this video are Ray's Hill and Sideling Hill.
The Lehigh Tunnel was also 2 way, and a new tunnel was bored next to it to make it 4 lanes, about 1984 or so.
I remember those tunnels. Went through them from college in Ohio to home in NYC! Had to spend the night in one during a blizzard! Thanks.
Wow you did a great job on the video. Very impressive implementing of old photos.
thank you :) hope you had fun "have fun" lol
Lol I had a lot of fun waiting for the next adventure
Awesome video
Thank you Hailey :) you made it awesomer lol
Looks like fun!
Thank for the Video .... I have traveled thru those tunnels many times !
brilliant vid and photos, love the history.
I live in upstate New York, I'm going to Charlotte, NC at the end of the month. Planning to stop by Breezwood on the way down to bike the Pike2Bike. Looking forward to it.
Back in the day some of those extra wide shoulders had picnic tables placed well away from the road. If you were motoring on a budget you brought your own food along rather than patronizing the service plazas, and took dinner or supper at a convenient place.
I did both in July. I rode through them by myself and was completely freaked out. What an awesome experience. Nice video!!!
That"s awesome Bud, i bet it was pretty scary alone. maybe your weren't alone!! someone lurking in the distance lol just playing. i had that feeling a couple times
Looks like it was a lot of fun. I'm jealous.
we had a blast, it was hard convincing the kids however as soon i mentioned staying the night at a motel they got excited lol its the little things in life. good memories

What a great video! Love the old clips mixed in- can’t wait to check this place out!
A great combination of old videos and your trip. Place seems quite popular in weekend - lots of people here.
Thanks for the great video. I love the transition at 17:20. You have really nice children.
Wish I was there riding as well! Looks like fun....
Hey bubba, like everybody else said, this is an awesome vid! I think it’s great when parents bring their kids out to explore abandoned places like this. Not to many people can say they got to not only see history in person but they got to actually explore them. Fun times bubba. Hope to see more vids of you and your awesome family. Take it easy bubba!!
will the Pennsylvania turnpike ever be used after all these decades after it has been abandoned

They could really make that a much nicer place
Great video! I plan to drive up there from Virginia this summer to bike it. One question: I thought I read it was mainly uphill on the way back. Did you find that to be true? If so, I was contemplating starting from the eastern end so as to be going downhill on the way back.
SuzieQ121 it is a slight grade up high so you might be best doing your plan. But start early in that day so you have time to look around. It is very nice we hope to get back and do it again lots of fun and great memories. Happy trails 😊👍
TL M Thanks for the info. We're actually going Memorial Day weekend and already have our reservation at the Quality Inn. Looking forward to it!
Probably could drink from the spring
Nice video.
But did she say "I've never climbed a ladder before"??
I went here in 2017 and inside we started to go down the hall way with to rooms at the end and we hard a door slam and a girl scream after we hard that we all booed it
Its us locals messing with y'all
It look like to me it was the end of the World.
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
I can't stand when people try and tell you about history and they screw it all up just like this guy , all your doing is dumbing your kid down .
