  • THE TURNPIKE NEEDS OUR HELP. THERE WAS A MEETING REGARDING POSSIBLE FUNDING TO HELP BRING BACK TO LIFE THE ABANDONED TURNPIKE TO USE AS A RECREATIONAL TRAIL BY MEANS OF REPAIRING AND MAINTAINING THIS STRETCH.
ALL WE NEED TO DO TO HELP THIS ALONG IS WRITE A LITTLE BLURB ABOUT HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THE PIKE AND HOW YOU THINK IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO FIX IT UP AND COULD CREATE A TOURIST ATTRACTION.
IF YOU CAN DO THIS AND EMAIL IT TO ME I WILL BE SURE IT GETS SENT TO THE RIGHT PERSON TO HELP MOTIVATE THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS TO SEE HOW IMPORTANT THIS NATIONAL TREASURE REALLY IS.
PLEASE SEND ANY COMMENTS TO ME AT:
    kylemills200@gmail.com
Thanks for helping us bring it back to life for future generations to enjoy!!!
My wife and I made the trek down to the abandoned section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. We had a chance to explore the tunnels again and I brought along my Phantom drone to get some great aerial shots so be sure to look for that video.

My parents and my entire family are from Bedford County. I was the only member born in New Jersey. They left in 1965 to move to New Jersey to find jobs. I was born 2 years later. They travelled through this tunnel. I never knew about this place until just a few years ago. Every year, we would travel the turnpike to visit my grandparents in Bedford County. When my parents retired, they moved back there and lived in the house my mother grew up in to help care for my grandmother. Now, my dad and grandmother have passed away but mom still lives there. I don't take the turnpike anymore because they raise the tolls every year and will continue to do so until the year 2044. I would love to explore this old tunnel.

I remember taking this trip when this turnpike was new and a real novelty - circa 1952 -gone are the days when you could enjoy a trip with all the scenery,- we always enjoyed the Burma-Shave signs (before the Interstate hwy system) and looked forward to them. Howard Johnson's was a good place to eat, on the Penn. Turnpike. I guess its called progress -but I would never part with my fond memories. Great videos Kyle Thanks for a job well done.keep up the good work.

Absolutely love the video. As a native of Pennsylvania, and having traveled the Turnpike numerous times, I never knew this even existed. You have definitely given me a desire to get out and explore this upcoming summer.

Again another great and awesome video on the history of the Pa Turnpike!! I would love to know how much the Pa turnpike has saved over the last 45-50 years by building the Laurel Hill and the Rays Hill/Sideling Hill Bypasses, especially in the winter. Having grown up in Pa those so called three hills are mountains, not hills, I use to drive those sections in the 70's and 80's and have no fond memories. A little trivia, did you the highest point in the turnpike on Oct. 29, 1964 was 2200 ft in Laurel {so called} Hill Tunnel. On Oct. 30, 1964 it was 2605 ft. on top of the Laurel {so called} Hill Bypass. You have to keep a bypass on top of a mountain open in the winter, but not the inside of a tunnel!! Thanks again for a great video.

You are correct, I have heard some real horror stories about the bypasses and the dangers during the winter months. The valleys were so much safer for traveling than going up and over the mountains. Glad you enjoyed!

who camps outside when you have an abandoned concrete structure right next the tents?
It's strange that they abandoned two tents like that though. That's how horror movies start out. Maybe they went inside to explore.

By the 1960's, backups of five miles or more were reported at times where the highway narrowed to two lanes for the tunnels. The Turnpike Commission had to do something, so they bypassed three tunnels and widened four, making the Turnpike four lanes statewide. There's still a problem; as the main line widens to six lanes soon, the four-lane tunnels will provide yet another bottleneck; I know they're looking at a bypass for Allegheny Mountain, don't know about the others.

I'm just curious, why did they close the turnpike? And you stated that you wanted to help to save this treasure? How? And how long was this turnpike in use?

+Phoenix Nimitz major underestimation of traffic volumes created massive backups and congestion at the tunnels. This section was in use from Oct 1940 until Nov 1968. Please read description on how we can help save this monument from natural destruction

I have 3 batteries and each gives me a solid 15mins although I could go a bit longer but I'm not risking losing it. I have a GoPro Hero3+ black on it. The drone is a DJI Phantom 2 with the Zenmuse H3-3D gimbal attached. Glad you enjoyed! I love visiting the old pike
