An almost forgotten village remains shattered along hillsides, tucked away in the quiet state of Pennsylvania. Since the late 1700s, Pennsylvania has hosted a heavy mining industry throughout the entire state. Mine operations for this particular, almost-forgotten town began in the late 1890s - when life was simpler and most of the country’s population would tend to worry and fear far less. This lack of worry may have been a large contributing factor to why this once beautiful town eventually fell apart, but let’s not point any fingers - thus was life, and life was good! However, it’s quite certain that very few - if any - could foresee this village’s eventual downfall until years later, when the simple, peaceful and close-knit town of Yellow Dog began to take a turn for the worst.
There’s a line of critters waiting for their snuggles. So cute. Great video. These coal miners are my ancestors. Always interested to see more of their way of life.
That is one kind man, telling by his animals. 💖
The kitty and the doggy were just so cute I just could not! They were so adorable!!!
I hope this town works out well. Its worth saving. The history especially...
Fantastic idea. Cat 🐈 and dog 🐶 was heros this interview 😜. Regards from Poland 🇵🇱 Europe 🇪🇺
👍.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I used to live in this village when I was a child. I remember a store being there, but do not recall the name of it.
This would be a great background for a ghost story. A few months ago on a bike ride, I rode past this abandoned village and looked it up online, and since then I've been fascinated with the history of the place. I wish the new owners all the best, with the restoration efforts. I can imagine a movie being shot on site here, making use of the dilapidated state for the present and the restored state for scenes set in the past.
Wow! Very interesting . And yes ,so much of our past is been lost to all the modern ways of life. But hard work build this country and we need to remember and honor it. Hope this project shows promise for the future.
very interesting story. hope this project goes through LOVE the idea of what to do with the buildings. And you have a kitty that LOVES you very much and doggy as well. LOVED it while you were talking they came right up like NOTHING was going on.. sweet kitty ..
you are right. a lot of what they did back then is dying. my dad and gram taught me to can and for about 15 years I didn't even try to do it anymore then one day I looked around at our food and bought a pressure canner and haven't stopped since. I love the old ways wish I could learn more about it. i would love to visit the town just to walk through it and feel the nonchalant of back then
What a cute kitty!
I would love to come live in the village, I would stay there permanently and live like it's 1910
Aw see, dogs and cats can get along ! So cute : ) Looks like a great place. PA has so much history in mining. Rough life, great people.
I'm all about preserving history! I pray it all is saved/restored.
At 4:04 he "gets attacked" by a miniature mountain lion? Vicious criddler lol, meow
Very interesting video. Fantastic idea...we can not think about future without knowing history..
i live in Pittsburgh, i wonder if they do tours of the place love to see it
Wonderful dream. I hope you continue to lead and keep your vision alive. I wish I could be part of this.
Absolutely Amazing, I love the idea of everything and I look forward to learning more about yellow dog, PA. I just moved to an area that is similar to yellow dog and I would like to help to have this city do the same considering I came from the city life in Philadelphia PA where there was a different life from this. I am hoping to have my children embrace this life and take advantage of all the amazing opportunities.
I just stumbled across your channel and I love your videos! They are very well done.
thank you Beth!

hey where do I sign up, it looks so lovely with great prospects, I wish you well my friend, good luck and I hope you have your dream granted as it's a worth while project.
Wonderful for you. I wish you all the best. This is something that should be done around the country. We need to treasure our older homes and bring back the skills of by gone days. I can't wait til the project is complete. I will definitely come support the local crafts people.
This guy who runs the town has a good concept for those who are willing to learn the old ways of life. I never knew the place existed when I lived in Baltimore. I and friends would had traveled there to visit .
My first memories were in that village ❤ I hope to see it alive again
This is such a cool idea. Also, someone mentioned doing different ones all over the US, which is also a great idea. These houses may not even have lead based paint if they were last painted long enough ago. Hope it is still going. An update would be wonderful.
I hope and pray your plan works. Saving history is so important. I use to spend my grade school vacations in Shenandoah / Lost Creek #2 which was so much fun. Loved the swimming hole. I really hope you guys can pull this off, best of luck and God Bless...how are the dog and cat?
This little town is just a few minutes down the highway from me- I would dearly love to live in and restore one of these homes. I have seen them and they are pretty bad, but the locale is lovely. Anyone with any history background is aware of what the "company town" was like, in much of history. PA is full of mining towns-all kinds of mining- often the companies owned your soul. (listen to Tennessee Ernie Ford sing about it.) I wish that this would become a unique and quaint place. It is near to so many other small towns and villages and not far from the larger world. Composting toilets and many "tiny home" conveniences would work for those inhabiting and building. Hurray for this idea!
limestone mine
Great project for Sustainable Tourism history to rescue old school life style , and most importantly appreciation to our ancestors hard work .I would like to know as a followers how we can help this teacher to go foward with his idea??
How does one go about buying a home there ? We're interested.
The place is not worth fixing up. All of the houses are too far gone.
LOL
I would sleep in front of the house and during the day have fun exploring and hopefully finding some to eat
Wow what a wonderful idea
Would love to be part of a community "village" like that
Agree with some of the comments about water and sewage being an issue
Although with work it could be worked out
Including introducing septic tanks for sewage
I have a spectacular idea for this place the vintage car and antique motorcycle guys would love and flock to each year.
Such a beautiful idea~
This place is beautiful. I would love to come see it.
I love this ... how can I be apart of this community? I would learn to learn , and live here ...
The wife and I live in the area and just took a drive out that way on Monday. There is potential to fulfill the vision the fellow has and that would be a good thing. The water and sewage issue will be the biggest obstacle.
Any up-dates ? I'm looking at this in 2021, what's the status at the present time ?
Surprised how many of these company towns are still around in PA. Crazier still are places that aren't hooked up to city water or sewerage.
I love how the dog and cat just come up as the video continues. But its a shame these houses are abandoned. A lot of people dont rlly have homes and i hope these houses can b restored. Even if some are far too gone doesnt mean you still cant try achieving what you want to achieve. They all look lik lovely houses that want to hav people in them again. Hope this works out :) wish we can do the same to other abandoned places too instead of letting them deteriorate and rot away.
Very interesting, thank you for sharing this. I hope the guy's project succeeds!
Wow great video and history ❤️ this thank you for showing this!
Glencoe Village in North Carolina accomplished this in a close way. For me, I would enjoy living there in Yellow Dog like it was 1910, acting the part for visitors would be such fun. Wonder how much one of the smaller homes would be.
Just subbed to you .. enjoying all your videos ty for sharing
I lived in yellow dog as a child Halloween will be 20 years that we moved from there. I have a lot of great memories from living there and made life long friends. I hope you can save it!
I was on you tube and saw a photographer filming this village before it wad bought. So why was so much left behind especially toys
I would love to visit this place!
Re open the mine for tourists and you'll be set, I've been in the mines on the next hill over and there extremely fascinating
I would love to live in that Village it be so cool
Pretty cool idea!!!
I think this just awesome
I found this "village" last week while visiting my childhood summer camp right next door. Broken windows, moisture, AND more lead paint than any child could possibly eat? What a compelling offer for trained craftsman to move out to the middle of nowhere to teach obsolete skills! There is a point where the anticipated benefit of a project exceeds the costs required to complete it, and this place crossed that line decades ago...that's why they abandoned it.
Yes I agree. It is a noble idea and I respect that man for having it. But, sometimes the past is just better off left in the past
Love the video and history thank you for posting.
like a few others have asked where do I sign up, would love to be able to offer any help needed, been looking for something to do with my life
RICH DUDDY It's called Google. com
when is this place opening up as a resort and how much is the place renting want to know please let me know?????
Yellow Dog (aka Shadyside Village) is literally condemned now. I live like 4 min from the place. A lot of the houses are asbestos sided. Falling a part, beyond disrepair. Right beside the place is the pump house with a dam. The creek is Buffalo Creek. I caught many trout there. I went past there over this summer, and there is nothing going on as far as restoring.
I watched a video of this place on another UA-cam channel that was at this village two weeks ago and sadly,it’s even worse now and the houses look almost beyond repair. The guy had a neat idea,it’s just too bad it didn’t happen.
The cat is a photo hog. Love his vision. I know a few people who to visit here. When can people visit?
I hope it works out . Shame about the windows .
I would live and work there, gardens, canning, going back to hard work and simple things!
The cat and dog were incredibly cute in the video.
I'm surprised, this village wouldn't be a far drive for me. I like it already.
Same, I live fairly close to this town. I tried driving there, but was deterred by the Blast Mining signs down the path my GPS wanted me to take
I've since driven there but the route I took was just outside the west end of Worthington on Yellow Dog Road. The village is about 2.5 miles southwest of Worthington. When I was there although I didn't stay for long I saw some horses in the neighborhood, a 1990s or early 2000s sedan parked outside one of the houses and clothes drying outside at another house near the top of the hill. There's also a Christian youth camp in the area.
Good luck with the village rebuild.
Sounds great, I hope it works. That area is rather pretty.
I find this admirable in every way. I am one who uses his hands daily. I constantly marvel at a man who cannot change a spare tire. Water and sewage issues were solved in ROMAN TIMES...they wont be an issue here either. All it takes is work...and sometimes money.
I love the idea and the fact that you use the word "Village" if we as modern American can get to (back) to the "Village" way of like we could really reduce the size of government. Each village would indeed be its own governance. Mr. Meyer reply to me if there is anything I need/could do in becoming a member of "The Village". I am currently living in San Diego, CA
I would definitely live there. :)
This reminds me of that movie "The Village "

Your thoughts are much appreciated Joe Meyer.
My grandpa uncles and mom helped make that playground at the beginning and they made a water tank in the wood behind the house at the top
Fantastic idea if they can pull it off.
Peeling paint needing to be scraped off. How about the lead abatement required?
I think it's a great thing to do.
I lived there for 20+ years from 1978 to 1998. It was a great little place to live until the previous owner sold it to complete idiots that let everything fall apart. Its way too far gone now to do anything about it anymore and it completely kills me inside. Everybody that lived there when it was closed down got forced out due to it
it is a complete dump now.
Too bad the scumbags who vandalized the place weren't caught and made to repair it!
Good luck and hope it all works
We're is this place at. I want to see it. Buying a house seem nice there
come to coupon Pa we are still here
You live here in this beautiful village, my dream is to live somewhere like this away from psychos of the city
it's a historical places,it is good to be known and let all the houses stay that way..just need new paint, furnitures. i would love tonbuy ome of this house if i allowed to do so. its a peaceful place..you can stay there away from a modern life, switch off you phone, relax and get rid from the internet for a moment. boommm... a peaceful life! ;-)
Bring in homeless Veterans, and teach them building trades, as they repair the homes.
i'm currently in 7th grade and all we do is type on our laptops (all the time). but although we do now have a extended knowledge do to it, i honestly wish that my school did not have technology.
What a shame i would live there it's beautiful
are you aloud to explore there
My family and I stopped by there last year while we were in PA (my grandma and dad lived there in 1983) they guy was friendly but only let us go into the one house.
i luke cool storys
Jessica Toy who were they ? I lived there then so I would definitely know them. Hard to not know everybody when the population was 130 people.
that is cool!
So what ever happened? Did you get it restored?
I wish you all good luck.
Whats the location?
Hows it going?
I got a bunch of old hardware.
A few old pics and very little info about history. Mostly about future plans.
I wanna live there
Sort of sad, sort of scary.
They were probably tired of being called YELLOW DOGS.
i hope ican get out soon
Ps ,I live in Wilkes Barre PA now current date please
updated ?
interetsting
Are people allowed to come and see the village ?
By scheduling yes
Hey, sign me up! My worry is the ability to attract young families needed to keep the community going, simply due to the potential for high exposure of lead, asbestos, or mining byproducts in the area. My younger two children have numerous side effects/disorders associated with lead exposure from inutero exposure at my previous job (I had no clue of the ramifications, thanks boss) and as infants through PreK we lived in an apartment that was "certified deleaded"(be careful, all these ghetto landlords do is paint over the leaded surface and call it safe.) I would want outside, reliable testing done to confirm the toxin load was equal to or lower than my current home, otherwise I am content to haul water, install solar panels, and learn every skill of house repair necessary. I can teach the community to knit, sew, can food for preservation, care for farm animals, ride horses, and more, I was a certified EMT so I bring some valuable skills. I think proper advertising would fill your imagined community.
who does one talk to about going to see this place
There is a play ground there my uncle build
Cato mcfato who is your uncle?
I lived there for 20 years and it was 1 of the previous owners of the village that built the playground. His name was Mark Patz
Yes, Mark Patz is my uncle, I was born after the town started to decline, but my dad lived there in the 90's before we moved up to Patz lane
My grandfather, Russ Patz Sr, was the care taker of the village in the 60's through the 80's, and I have all kinds of stories of things hes done. I recently found a notebook of jobs he did in the 80's and its interesting to say the least.
The cat 🥹
What. a wonderful dream! How about a GoFundMe for this endeavor? I'll happily donate!
So why did the people leave, and better yet, why did they leave so much junk behind all over their houses?
