  • Buckskin Bill lived in Idaho's Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness for nearly 50 years, before it was even designated as protected wilderness area.

    That "Conquistador Helmet" as you called it in the article, Bill actually crafted it of bear hide, not metal.
    I think it is also worth noting that Sylvan Hart earned an engineering degree before he retreated to Salmon River country during the Great Depression. He understood materials and mechanical devices. During WW2, he left the Idaho wilderness to work on the Norton Bombsite.

    Met him in 1974 when a friend and I went out west for the summer. There was already a book about him by Peterson called Last of the Mountain Men.
