The Man Living in Complete Isolation for 40 Years (Part 4/4) | Far Out

  • Since 1965, Faustino Barrientos has lived alone on the shores of lake O'Higgins in a house built from the remains of a shipwrecked fishing vessel. He's a pastoralist, living mostly off the land and his livestock, with few modern amenities. His nearest neighbors are in Villa O'Higgins, a small community of several hundred people, 25 miles away, accessible only by a two-day horseback ride through rugged mountain animal paths. Every few years, Faustino makes this ride to sell his cattle in town.
Currently 81 years old, Faustino is reaching the end of his life, and his self-imposed isolation is being encroached upon by the forces of government, economy, and tourism. In December 2011, VICE went to document his lifestyle and speak with him about the changing face of Patagonia and the gaucho lifestyle.

for anyone wondering, Faustino is still alive! last report of him was August 19th, 2020. he looks healthy in the photos, accompanied by his two dogs :)
to those who wonder where did these photos came from - a few police officers went to his home to bring him clothes and chop some wood for him and they (police) posted pictures of him, in their official twitter account.

the only trouble is he ended up murdering someone. Hope he repents
of sin while there is time for him and commits to Jesus so he can avoid hell.
But he is resourceful and a decent builder which is good. You would
have to be a hard person too to slaughter animals. Unless you just lived
off vegetables. But I think a lot of people see that as a romantic kind of
life with the boat coming in every 10 days or so and total peace and quiet.
A bit like living on a desert island. I am not sure how he makes his money?
but he would have to eat his tinned food fairly fast too or the cans would go
rusty. But I must say animals make for way more lovely company
than people. So yeah it is more appealing in many ways to live like that.
But I think its better if say 2 or 3 live that way in case you got sick or
      disabled.

Watching this was like living in an Earnest Hemingway novel. Bucolic, rugged, indomitable grit, coalescing with the sights, smells, and inhospitabilities of the wild. It's so nostalgic and sobering, you can almost feel the sussurus Chilean zephyrs caress, made me wish I was there to watch my final sunrise

Initially you get the impression of a cantankerous old hermit living like some kind of troll in the wilds of Patagonia. What I see was a kind old man with an easy smile. He really seems to enjoy Lancaster living on his land, which again, defies the Faustino his family described. By the way, I completely believe that his nephew was stealing from him! "This guy was a murderer
so you had to be careful
so i ran into him on the road one day and with a revolver
    i took him down
he fell of his horse and died haha"

I searched him on a website that shows all the registered dead people here in Chile and there were no results. And I also searched him on a website were you can find chilean people's ID number and he appears as alive. So he must be alive and 90 years old.

He’s still alive, the police went out there to check in on him, Brought him clothes and a few supplies and took a picture of him with his two dogs and posted it to their Twitter. They say he is alive and well and still healthy as a horse.
